Abstract Arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes, including Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), present a substantial global health threat. JEV is transmitted by mosquitoes in the genus Culex, which are common in both urban and rural areas in Vietnam. In 2020, we conducted a 1-year survey of Culex mosquito abundance in urban, suburban, and peri-urban areas of Hanoi using CDC-light traps. Mosquitoes were identified to species and sorted into pools based on species, sex, and trap location. The mosquito pools were also investigated by RT-qPCR for detection of JEV. In total, 4829 mosquitoes were collected over a total of 455 trap-nights, across 13 months. Collected mosquitoes included Culex, Aedes, Anopheles, and Mansonia species. Culex mosquitoes, primarily Cx. quinquefasciatus, predominated, especially in peri-urban areas. Most Culex mosquitoes were caught in the early months of the year. The distribution and abundance of mosquitoes exhibited variations across urban, suburban, and peri-urban sites, emphasizing the influence of environmental factors such as degree of urbanization, temperature and humidity on Culex abundance. No JEV was detected in the mosquito pools. This study establishes baseline knowledge of Culex abundance and temporal variation, which is crucial for understanding the potential for JEV transmission in Hanoi.

This study aims to investigate the prevalence of hyperuricemia and identify some factors associated with hyperuricemia among Vietnamese pregnant women. ABSTRACT Importance Nutritional status of infants, measured by birth weight and length, is an essential factor in neonatal development. Malnutrition in newborns may lead to a higher risk of mortality, neurological and cognitive impairment, and poor language development. Objective This study aims to assess the nutritional status of infants and related factors regarding maternal anthropometric characteristics and medical history. Methods A cross‐sectional study was conducted at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vietnam from May 2021 to May 2022 on 340 infants and mothers. Low birth weight was defined following the Intergrowth‐21 standards. Stunting was evaluated using the Fenton growth chart when the length was below the 10% percentile line of the gestational week. Multivariate regression models were applied to identify factors associated with the nutritional status of infants. Results We found that 12.4% and 14.1% of infants in our study fell into stunted and underweight categories, respectively. Infants of mothers over 35 years old, having a height lower than 150 cm or experiencing anemia during pregnancy were more likely to be stunted or have low birth weight. Serum albumin deficiency during pregnancy was strongly associated with the infant being underweight (odds ratio [OR] = 2.8, 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 1.1–7.3). Newborns were more likely to be stunted if their mothers had a history of preterm birth (OR = 3.3, 95%CI 1.1–10.2). Interpretation Maternal nutritional status is closely related to infant malnutrition, particularly in preterm infants. Improving the understanding of mothers regarding prenatal care, reproductive healthcare, adequate nutritional diet, and multi‐micronutrient supplements during pregnancy is therefore important.

We identified adpA as an araC-like regulatory gene needed for colonial morphogenesis in Streptomyces coelicolor and showed that its activity depended on a unique TTA triplet corresponding to the leucyl-tRNA gene (bldA). These findings partially explained the dependence of aerial mycelium formation on a rare tRNA that is postulated to have developmental control functions.

This work presents a gas-phase approach for the synthesis of Cu2O/TiO2 powder-based photocatalysts using atomic layer deposition (ALD). The process is carried out in a fluidized bed reactor working at atmospheric pressure using (trimethylvinylsilyl)-hexafluoroacetulacetonate copper(I) as the Cu-precursor and H2O vapor as the oxidizer. The saturating regime of the chemical reactions and the linear growth of ALD are achieved. In combination with the unsaturated regime, the ALD approach enables the deposition of ultrasmall Cu2O clusters with average diameters in the range of 1.3–2.0 nm, narrow particle size distributions and tunable Cu2O loadings on P25 TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic performance of Cu2O/TiO2 photocatalysts is investigated by the degradation of organic dyes, including Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange, and methylene blue; the results demonstrate that the surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles by Cu2O nanoclusters significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. This is attributed to the efficient charge transfer between Cu2O and TiO2 that reduces the charge recombination. The photocatalytic reaction mechanism is further investigated for the degradation of RhB, revealing the dominating role of holes, which contribute to both direct hole oxidation and indirect oxidation (i.e. via the formation of hydroxyl radicals). Our approach provides a fast, scalable and efficient process to deposit ultrasmall Cu2O clusters in a controllable fashion for surface engineering and modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background To determine the changes in emergency and elective caesarean section (CS) rates since the COVID-19 pandemic, identify the groups most affected, and examine changes in the factors associated with CS rates, and reasons for CS. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study using routinely collected data of 22,346 births from before the pandemic (January 2018–February 2020) and 18,597 births during the pandemic (March 2020–December 2021). Data were analysed using multinominal logistic regression. Results The CS rate increased by 4.1% (from 30.1% to 34.2%), reflecting increases of 2.3% in emergency CS (from 11.5% to 13.8%) and 1.7% in elective CS (from 18.7% to 20.4%). Large groups with notable increases were women who were nulliparous (7.2% increase), from South Asia (6.0%), obese (5.2%) and giving birth at a small hospital (6.1%). Compared to pre-pandemic, the relative risk of an emergency CS versus a vaginal delivery increased 1.36 times (adjusted relative risk ratio (aRRR) = 1.36; 95% CI = 1.27, 1.45) and the risk of having an elective CS increased 1.11 times (aRRR = 1.11; 95% CI = 1.04, 1.20). Factors associated with both emergency and elective CS were age, region of birth, reproductive history, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, mode of antenatal care and hospital. Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas and antenatal care were only associated with elective CS. Baby gender was only associated with emergency CS. Preterm gestation at delivery was associated with reduced emergency but increased elective CS. Foetal compromise was the most common indication for emergency CS (43.2%) and increased the most (8.0%). Previous CS was the most common indication for elective CS (61.5%) and reduced the most (1.9%). Conclusions Both emergency and elective CS rates increased significantly during the pandemic, with the former increasing at a higher rate. The persistent upward trend of CS rates, exacerbated by increasing proportions of nulliparous women undergoing CSs, is concerning.

Background: People living with dementia (PLWD) may experience substantial cognitive decline as the disease progresses, which interferes with their daily activities. This study aimed to assess physical activity (PA) performance and care dependency (CD) and identify factors related to PA among PLWD. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 63 PLWD from National Geriatrics Hospital, Vietnam, from 2021 to 2023. We used the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and Care Dependency Scale (CDS) to assess the nutritional status and the levels of PA and CD, respectively. We used the Mann–Whitney test to compare the differences in the PA types and CD levels between dementia levels and a multivariable logistics regression model to analyze factors related to PA. Results: More than half of the subjects had mild dementia. In total, 35% of the PLWD had a low level of PA, and 46.3% were completely independent of care. The mean score in each CDS aspect of the subjects with moderate/severe dementia was statistically significantly lower than that of those with mild dementia (p ≤ 0.05). Lower dependency (OR = 0.9; 95% CI = 0.88–0.99) and malnutrition (OR = 15.4; 95% CI = 1.18–20.21) were associated with insufficient PA in the PLWD. Conclusion: Formal caregivers and healthcare workers should encourage PLWD to perform physical activities at any level and personalize the development of tailored and nutritional care strategies for each individual.

Objective: Hospital use increases in the last 3 months of life. We aimed to examine its association with where people live and its variation across a large health jurisdiction. Methods: We studied a number of emergency department presentations and days spent in hospital, and in-hospital deaths among decedents who were hospitalized within 30 days of death across 153 areas in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, during 2010-2015. Results: Decedents' demographics and health status were associated with hospital use. Primary care and aged care supply had no or minimal influence, as opposed to the varying effects of areal factors—socioeconomic status, remoteness, and distance to hospital last admitted. Overall, there was an approximate 20% difference in hospital use by decedents across areas. In all, 18% to 57% of areas had hospital use that differed from the average. Discussion: The observed disparity can inform targeted local efforts to strengthen the use of community care services and reduce the burden of end-of-life care on hospitals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
