Optical quadratic nonlinearity is ultrafast in nature, while parametric interaction usually manifests only the broadband characteristic [1]. Enormous progress has been made toward broadband phase-matching for parametric amplification and wide applications [1-3]. In existing devices of broadband parametric amplification, the power efficiency of conversion is restricted to approximately the energy efficiency, and the desire for the signal power enhancement necessitates additional pulse compression after amplification [4-10]. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast parametric amplification having an extraordinary power efficiency of 1155%; this allows the generation of intense femtosecond pulses without the need for a pulse stretcher and compressor. Direct femtosecond signal amplification by picosecond pumping is enabled by an ultrafast parametric environment in which the pre-delayed signal of faster speed gradually overtakes and effectively depletes the pump of slower speed as they propagate in a nonlinear crystal. The demonstrated technique should lead to breakthroughs in ultrafast lasers as well as applications.

We propose a scheme for the direct generation of an ultrashort pulse train as well as the further compression of pulsed lasers based on the nonlinearity inherent to parity-time (PT) symmetric optical systems. Implementation of optical parametric amplification in a directional coupler of χ(2) waveguides enables ultrafast gain switching through pump-controlled breaking of PT symmetry. We theoretically demonstrate that pumping such a PT symmetric optical system with a periodically amplitude-modulated laser enables periodic gain switching, which can directly convert a continuous-wave signal laser into a train of ultrashort pulses. We further demonstrate that by engineering the PT symmetry threshold, an apodized gain switching that enables the production of ultrashort pulses without side lobes. This work suggests a new approach for exploring the non-linearity inherent to various PT symmetric optical structures to extend optical manipulation capabilities.

The existing pulsed laser technologies and devices are mainly in the infrared spectral region below 3 μm so far. However, longer-wavelength pulsed lasers operating in the deep mid-infrared region (3-20 μm) are desirable for atmosphere spectroscopy, remote sensing, laser lidar, and free-space optical communications. Currently, the lack of reliable optical switches is the main limitation for developing pulsed lasers in the deep mid-infrared region. Here, we demonstrate that topological semimetal antimonene possesses an ultrabroadband optical switch characteristic covering from 2 μm to beyond 10 μm. Especially, the topological semimetal antimonene shows a very low saturable energy fluence (only 3-15 nJ cm-2 beyond 3 μm) and an ultrafast recovery time of ps level. We also demonstrate stable Q-switching in fiber lasers at 2 and 3.5 μm by using topological semimetal antimonene as passive optical switches. Combined with the high environmental stability and easy fabrication, topological semimetal antimonene offers a promising optical switch that extends pulsed lasers into deep mid-infrared region.

We report on a red-diode-clad-pumped continuous-wave (CW) and mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 3.5 µm for the first time. Numerical simulation shows that a heavily-doped Er:ZBLAN fiber is favorable for effective generation of 3.5 µm laser through 658 nm laser diode pumping. Using a 7.0 mol.% Er:ZBLAN fiber, CW output power of 203 mW was experimentally obtained at 3462 nm. By incorporating a home-made semiconductor saturable absorber mirror into the cavity, diode-pumped CW mode-locked 3.5 µm Er:ZBLAN fiber laser was first demonstrated with an average power of 19 mW, a pulse duration of 18.1 ps, and a repetition rate of 46 MHz. The research results show that red-diode-clad-pumping provides a simple and potential scheme for 3.5 µm CW and mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser.

Indium selenide (InSe) film, an emerging two-dimensional chalcogenide semiconductor, has recently attracted growing interests in optoelectronics. However, its nonlinear characteristics and application potentials in mid-infrared (IR) region remain open, which is a very attractive but undeveloped spectral region currently. In this work, it is demonstrated that InSe film possesses excellent nonlinear absorption properties in 3- to 4-μm band. Saturable absorption measurements of InSe film at 2.8 and 3.5 μm show very low saturation energy fluences and moderate modulation depths. Pump–probe measurements at 3 and 4 μm indicate that InSe film has ultrafast responses in mid-IR region. Furthermore, the application of InSe film in mid-IR pulsed laser is demonstrated, and stable Q-switching operation of fiber laser at 2.8 μm is realized. These results show that InSe film is a promising saturable absorber for mid-IR pulsed laser.

Semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) have been regarded as a revolutionary technology for ultrafast mode-locked lasers, producing numerous landmark laser breakthroughs. However, the operating wavelength of existing SESAMs is limited to less than 3 µm. In this study, we create a 3–5 µm mid-infrared (MIR) SESAM by engineering an InAs/GaSb type-II superlattice. Bandgap engineering and the strong coupling between potential wells in a superlattice enable a broadband response of saturable absorption in the 3–5 µm spectral range. Using the fabricated SESAM, we realize a SESAM mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 3.5 µm, which delivers MIR ultrashort pulses with high long-term stability. The breakthrough of SESAM fabrication in the MIR will promote the development of MIR ultrafast coherent sources and related application fields.

Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification is inevitably subject to high-order spatial chirp, particularly under the condition of saturated amplification and a Gaussian pump; this corresponds to an irreversible spatiotemporal distortion and consequently degrades the maximum attainable focused intensity. In this paper, we reveal that such spatial chirp distortion can be significantly mitigated in quasi-parametric chirped-pulse amplification (QPCPA) with idler absorption. Simulation results show that the quality of focused intensity in saturated QPCPA is nearly ideal, with a spatiotemporal Strehl ratio higher than 0.98. As the seed bandwidth increases, the idler absorption spectrum may not be uniform, but the Strehl ratio in QPCPA can be still high enough due to stronger idler absorption.

In strong-field physics experiments with ultraintense lasers, a single-shot cross-correlator (SSCC) is essential for fast optimization of the pulse contrast and meaningful comparison with theory for each pulse shot. To simultaneously characterize an ultrashort pulse and its long pedestal, the SSCC device must have both a high resolution and a large temporal window. However, the resolution and window in all kinds of single-shot measurement contradict each other in principle. Here we propose and demonstrate a novel SSCC device with two separate measurement channels: channel-1 for the large-window pedestal measurement has a moderate resolution but a large window, while channel-2 for the ultrashort pulse measurement has a small window but a high resolution; this allows the accurate characterization of the pulse contrast in a single shot. A two-channel SSCC device with a 200-fs resolution and 114-ps window has been developed and tested for its application in ultraintense lasers at 800 nm.

Dissipative solitons have been realized in mode-locked fiber lasers in the theoretical framework of the Ginzburg–Landau equation and have significantly improved the pulse energy and peak power levels of such lasers. It is interesting to explore whether dissipative solitons exist in optical parametric oscillators in the framework of three-wave coupling equations in order to substantially increase the performance of optical parametric oscillators. Here, we demonstrate a temporal-filtering dissipative soliton in a synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillator. The temporal-gain filtering of the pump pulse combined with strong cascading nonlinearity and dispersion in the optical parametric oscillator enables the generation of a broad spectrum with a nearly linear chirp; consequently, a significantly compressed pulse and high peak power can be realized after dechirping outside the cavity. Furthermore, we realized, for the first time, dissipative solitons in an optical system with a negative nonlinear phase shift and anomalous dispersion, extending the parameter region of dissipative solitons. The findings may open a new research block for dissipative solitons and provide new opportunities for mid-infrared ultrafast science.

Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) is prone to undesired spatiotemporal couplings. This Letter studies a family of OPCPA couplings resulting from the nonlinear phase shift induced by frequency-dependent phase mismatch. These OPCPA couplings manifest as pulse-front deformation, transversely varying pulse duration, and spectrally varying wavefront curvature, which are directly linked with the phase–mismatch dispersion terms. The numerical study in this Letter also reveals that the focused signal intensity severely degrades with increasing signal bandwidth and pump depletion.

An ultrashort mid-infrared (IR) source beyond 5 µm is crucial for a plethora of existing and emerging applications in spectroscopy, medical diagnostics, and high-field physics. Nonlinear generation of such sources from well-developed near-IR lasers, however, remains a challenge due to the limitation of mid-IR crystals. Based on oxide L a 3 G a 5.5 N b 0.5 O 14 (LGN) crystals, here we report the generation of femtosecond pulses tunable from 3 to 7 µm by intrapulse difference-frequency generation of 7.5 fs, 800 nm pulses. The efficiency and bandwidth dependences on pump polarization and crystal length are studied for both Type-I and Type-II phase-matching configurations. Maximum pulse energy of ∼ 10 n J is generated at 5.2 µm with a conversion efficiency of ∼ 0.14 % . Because of the few-cycle pump pulse duration, the generated mid-IR pulses are as short as about three cycles. These results, to the best of our knowledge, represent the first experimental demonstration of LGN in generating mid-IR ultrashort pulses.

Optical vortex is a promising candidate for capacity scaling in next-generation optical communications. The generation of multi-vortex beams is of great importance for vortex-based optical communications. Traditional approaches for generating multi-vortex beams are passive, unscalable and cumbersome. Here, we propose and demonstrate a multi-vortex laser, an active approach for creating multi-vortex beams directly at the source. By printing a specially-designed concentric-rings pattern on the cavity mirror, multi-vortex beams are generated directly from the laser. Spatially, the generated multi-vortex beams are decomposable and coaxial. Temporally, the multi-vortex beams can be simultaneously self-mode-locked, and each vortex component carries pulses with GHz-level repetition rate. Utilizing these distinct spatial-temporal characteristics, we demonstrate that the multi-vortex laser can be spatially and temporally encoded for data transmission, showing the potential of the developed multi-vortex laser in optical communications. The demonstrations may open up new perspectives for diverse applications enabled by the multi-vortex laser.

In strong‐field physics experiments with high‐intensity lasers, single‐shot characterization of the temporal contrast between the laser pulse peak and its temporal pedestal is important; this allows fast optimization of the pulse contrast and meaningful comparison with theory for each pulse shot. To date, high contrast ratios of 1010 have been demonstrated in single‐shot measurements for petawatt (PW) lasers. However, ultrahigh contrast ratios of ≈1013, as required for the planned 200 PW lasers, pose challenges to high‐intensity laser technologies and have thus far remained open for investigation. This article reports a pilot demonstration of ultrahigh‐contrast measurements by adapting a single‐shot cross‐correlator (SSCC). An evaluation method for the SSCC detection limit is introduced. The strategy mimics the test beam with known spatial contrast, whose cross‐correlation is equivalent to that of a test pulse with ultrahigh temporal contrast. The ultimate contrast measurement limit of 1013 is achieved, which corresponds to the highest pulse intensity by optical damage and the lowest temporal pedestal by single‐photon detection. The photon noise of the detector is observed and becomes dominant as the temporal pedestal of the optical pulse decreases. The demonstrated detection ability is applied to a high‐contrast laser system, suggesting the accessibility of ultrahigh‐contrast measurements.

Both femtosecond and dual-wavelength picosecond operations of Nd,La:SrF2 disordered crystal laser have been demonstrated for the first time. In femtosecond operation, the laser generated mode-locked pulses with pulse duration of 156 fs, which is an average power of 90 mW, and a repetition rate of 108 MHz at the central wavelength of 1057 nm. In dual-wavelength picosecond operation, the laser generated synchronously mode-locked pulses with an average power of 500 mW and pulse duration of 9.9 ps. The mode-locked spectrum clearly shows two peaks at 1050.8 and 1059.0 nm, respectively. A periodic beat frequency of 2.2 THz is observed from the intensity autocorrelation trace, indicating the synchronous dual-wavelength mode-locking. Our experimental results show that Nd,La:SrF2 disordered crystal is an excellent laser material for femtosecond and dual-wavelength lasers near 1 μm wavelength.

Back conversion is an intrinsic phenomenon in nonlinear frequency down-conversion processes. However, the physical reason for its occurrence is not well understood. Here, we theoretically reveal that back conversion is the result of a π-phase jump associated with the depletion of one interacting wave. By suppressing the idler phase jump through a deliberate crystal absorption, the back conversion can be inhabited, thus enhancing the conversion efficiency from the pump to the signal. The results presented in this Letter will further the understanding of nonlinear parametric processes and pave the way toward the design of highly efficient down-conversion systems.

High-power femtosecond lasers beyond $5~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ are attractive for strong-field physics with mid-infrared (IR) fields but are difficult to scale up. In optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) at mid-IR wavelengths, a nonlinear crystal is vital, and its transmittance, dispersion, nonlinear coefficient and size determine the achievable power and wavelength. OPCPA beyond $5~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ routinely relies on semiconductor crystals because common oxide crystals are not transparent in this spectral range. However, the small size and low damage threshold of semiconductor crystals fundamentally limit the peak power to gigawatts. In this paper, we design a terawatt-class OPCPA system at $5.2~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ based on a new kind of oxide crystal of $\text{La}_{3}\text{Ga}_{5.5}\text{Nb}_{0.5}\text{O}_{14}$ (LGN). The extended transparent range, high damage threshold, superior phase-matching characteristics and large size of LGN enable the generation of 0.13 TW seven-cycle pulses at $5.2~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ . This design fully relies on the state-of-the-art OPCPA technology of an octave-spanning ultrafast Ti:sapphire laser and a thin-disk Yb:YAG laser, offering the performance characteristics of high power, a high repetition rate and a stable carrier–envelope phase.

Radially polarized lasers, in contrast to the conventional Gaussian laser mode, possess unique features such as sharp focusing and strong longitudinal fields. Thus far, radially polarized femtosecond pulses have been produced only by low-power devices such as mode-locked resonators and segmented half-wave plates. It is imperative to solve the bottleneck problem in generating higher powers and shorter durations. This paper reports on a polarization-insensitive, high-gain optical parametric amplifier for radially polarized femtosecond pulses, which works at type-II phase-matching and approximately degenerate wavelength. We experimentally demonstrate > 1000 -fold amplification of radially polarized ∼ 400 f s pulses at 1610 nm, via chirped ∼ 280 f s pumping at 800 nm, with the axially symmetric intensity profile and radial polarization state both being well-maintained within a 20 nm spectral range. With currently available high-energy picosecond pumping, the demonstrated amplification scheme will be promising to create radially polarized femtosecond pulses with ultrahigh powers and may facilitate future applications such as strong-field physics.

Resonant cascaded nonlinearity (RCN) induced by optical parametric amplification (OPA) in a chirped quasi-phase-matching chip can be applied to control the group velocity of ultrafast lasers. However, the group delay produced in a single-stage OPA is limited to the pulse duration, and its sign cannot be altered. In this study, we propose a tandem RCN configuration with multiple OPA stages that can produce large-magnitude and sign-controllable group delays. The group delay produced in the multi-stage configuration is shown to be a linear superposition of each single-stage group delay. By virtue of the byproduct idler in the OPA process, the signal-group delay can be altered from positive to negative (and vice versa) with the same chip structure and pump condition. In the numerical simulation with two OPA stages, both a positive and negative group delay of six-fold pulse duration were achieved for 100-fs pulses at 1550 nm. A much larger group delay can be achieved by increasing the number of OPA stages.

The coherent noise inherent to optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) poses a fundamental limitation on the temporal quality of current ultrashort ultraintense lasers as well as their applications in strong-field physics research. Here we present a peer comparison of coherent noise between OPCPA and one of its alternatives — quasi-parametric chirped-pulse amplification (QPCPA). In the initial amplification stage termed as small-signal regime, the spectrum of chirped signal pulse in either OPCPA or QPCPA is exposed to the imperfections in pump pulse and optics, resulting in coherent noise pedestals in the time domain. While in the final amplification stage featured by amplifier saturation, the nonlinear growths of coherent noise become sharply different. We demonstrate that the non-parametric saturation behavior of QPCPA can greatly smooth the spectral distortions of signal, and thus bring down the coherent noise. Consequently, QPCPA scheme allows an improvement of pulse contrast by 2–3 orders of magnitude. The results presented in this paper provide a new perspective on high-contrast amplification of ultrashort pulses.

Mid-infrared femtosecond vortex beams generated by optical parametric oscillators (OPO) are reported for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. Order-tunable femtosecond Hermite–Gauss beams from the first to sixth order are produced from a synchronously pumped OPO and then converted into the corresponding first through sixth-order femtosecond vortex beams by a cylindrical lens mode converter. By slightly tuning the cavity length, the wavelength of the vortex beam can be continuously tunable in the range from 2323 to 2382 nm, and the pulse duration can be changeable from ∼ 400 f s to ∼ 1.1 p s . The work provides a flexible and reliable way to generate mid-infrared femtosecond vortex beams, and is of special significance for expanding the wavelength range of femtosecond vortex beams and their application fields.

We demonstrated a femtosecond mode-locked Er:ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (Er:ZBLAN) fiber laser at 2.8 μm based on the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. The laser generated an average output power of 317 mW with a repetition rate of 107 MHz and pulse duration as short as 131 fs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse generated directly from a mid-infrared mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser to date. Numerical simulation and experimental results confirm that reducing the gain fiber length is an effective way to shorten the mode-locked pulse duration in the Er:ZBLAN fiber laser. The work takes an important step towards sub-100-fs mid-infrared pulse generation from mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber lasers.

Frequency-domain optical parametric amplification (FOPA) is a new scheme that enables extremely broadband amplification of ultraintense pulses. The spatiotemporal coupling property of signal pulses can make the coherent noise of FOPA sharply different from that of conventional OPCPA. This paper presents a first theoretical study on the coherent noise produced in a FOPA system. We reveal that the coherent noise acquires the spatiotemporal coupling, and thus distinguishes the compressed signal pulse not only in time but also in space, which allows the suppression of coherent noise via optical manipulations in the spatial domain. The quantitative impacts of spatiotemporal coherent noise originated from the imperfections in either pump laser or crystal surfaces, are numerically studied. The result provides a new perspective on improving the coherent contrast of ultraintense lasers.

Pulse contrast is a crucial parameter of high peak-power lasers since the prepulse noise may disturb laser–plasma interactions. Contrast measurement is thus a prerequisite to tackle the contrast challenge in high peak-power lasers. This paper presents the progress review of single-shot cross-correlator (SSCC) for real-time contrast characterization. We begin with the key technologies that enable an SSCC to simultaneously possess high dynamic range ($10^{10}$), large temporal window (50–70 ps) and high fidelity. We also summarize the instrumentation of SSCC prototypes and their applications on five sets of petawatt laser facilities in China. Finally, we discuss how to extend contrast measurements from time domain to spatiotemporal domain. Real-time and high-dynamic-range contrast measurements, provided by SSCC, can not only characterize various complex noises in high peak-power lasers but also guide the system optimization.

We report on a continuous-wave (CW) and passively Q-switched Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser in mid-infrared spectral region. In the CW regime, a maximum output power of 2.07 W is achieved at 2717.3 nm with a slope efficiency of 13.5%. Stable passive Q-switching of the Er:Y2O3 ceramic laser is demonstrated based on semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. Under an absorbed pump power of 12.4 W, a maximum average output power of 223 mW is generated with a pulse energy of 1.7 μJ and a pulse width of 350 ns at 2709.3 nm.

We report on a passively Q-switched fiber laser with black phosphorus as saturable absorber. By employing the sol-gel fabricated large-mode-area Tm-doped fiber as gain medium, a high-energy Q-switched fiber laser has been demonstrated which delivers the maximum pulse energy of 11.72 μJ with the pulse width of 660 ns at the wavelength of 1954 nm. Our experimental results indicate that BP Q-switched large-mode-area Tm-doped fiber laser is an effective and reliable approach to generate high-energy pulses at 2 μm.

We report on a diode-pumped passively mode-locked picosecond Tm:CaGdAlO 4 (Tm:CALGO) laser using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror as the mode locker. With Tm:CALGO disordered crystal as gain medium, the mode-locked laser generated pulses with pulse duration of 27 ps, repetition rate of 128.6 MHz, and maximum average power of 330 mW at 1949.5 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a mode-locked Tm:CALGO disordered crystal laser. The continuous-wave (CW) laser performance of Tm:CALGO was also investigated, and the maximum CW power was 730 mW. Our research results show that Tm:CALGO crystal is an excellent bulk medium for picosecond pulse generation at 2-μm wavelength.

We examined the relationship between type 2 diabetes and skin wound healing. GSE38396 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and preprocessed using the RMA function of the Affy package. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the limma package, then DAVID was applied to per-form Gene Ontology functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis. MicroRNAs and their target genes were screened from the miRecords database and subjected to functional analysis. Finally, the STRING online database was applied to identify the protein-protein interaction relationships, and a combined score > 0.5 was considered to indicate an interaction. A total of 421 DEGs (208 upregulated and 213 downregulated genes) were identified in the skin lymphatic endothelial cells of patients with type II diabetes. Twenty-four microRNAs and 34 target genes were screened, including those involved in cell migration, regulation of cell proliferation, cell death, and cell adhesion regulation, among others. Protein-protein interaction network clustering analysis identified a module composed of 25 genes, and INTERPRO protein domain enrichment analysis showed that the protein domain of the clustering module main-ly contained the insulin-like growth factor binding proteins IGFBP3 and CYR61. IGFBP3 and CYR61 may play important roles in skin wound healing in diabetes patients. This information may be useful for developing methods to treat skin refractory wounds in type II diabetes.

There is a growing interest in developing ultrafast laser sources around 2-μm wavelength range. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Tm:YAG ceramic laser using graphene as a mode locker. By transferring graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition onto Au-coated mirror as saturable absorber, continuous wave mode locking is successfully obtained in the Tm:YAG ceramic laser. The generated mode-locked pulses in 2-μm spectral region have a pulse width as short as 2.8 ps, with a maximum average output power of 158 mW and repetition rate of 98.7 MHz. The mode-locked mid-infrared pulses are very stable having a multitude of potential applications such as ultrafast molecule spectroscopy, mid-IR nonlinear frequency conversion, etc.
