Activity patterns of animals often relate to environmental variables such as food availability and predation pressure. Technological advances are providing us with new tools to monitor and better understand these activity patterns. We used animal-attached data loggers recording acceleration and depth to compare activity patterns and vertical habitat use of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. Whale sharks showed a moderate reverse diel vertical migration but exhibited a clear crepuscular pattern in locomotory activity. Peak activity occurred at sunset, whereas vertical movement peaked prior to this. Typical ram surface filter feeding could be identified and occurred primarily during sunset and the first hours of night. At such times, direct observations indicated whale sharks were feeding on tropical krill swarms. Kinematic analysis of postural data and data from vertical movement suggests that whale sharks at Ningaloo spend ~8 min per day actively ram surface filter feeding. Considering the high biomass present in krill schools, it is estimated that whale sharks at Ningaloo have a similar energy intake as those at other aggregation sites. Diel patterns in activity and diving behaviour suggest that whale sharks have tuned their diving behaviour in anticipation of the formation of these high-density patches which appear to only be periodically, but predictably available at sunset. Our results confirm that diel patterns in vertical habitat selection and vertical movements do not necessarily reflect patterns in activity and foraging behaviour. Locomotion is one of the major energetic costs faced by animals and various strategies have evolved to reduce its cost. Birds use interspersed periods of flapping and gliding to reduce the mechanical requirements of level flight while undergoing cyclical changes in flight altitude, known as undulating flight. Here we equipped free-ranging marine vertebrates with accelerometers and demonstrate that gait patterns resembling undulating flight occur in four marine vertebrate species comprising sharks and pinnipeds. Both sharks and pinnipeds display intermittent gliding interspersed with powered locomotion. We suggest, that the convergent use of similar gait patterns by distinct groups of animals points to universal physical and physiological principles that operate beyond taxonomic limits and shape common solutions to increase energetic efficiency. Animal movement, as measured by the overall dynamic body acceleration (ODBA), has recently been shown to correlate well with energy expenditure. However, accelerometers measure a summed acceleration derived from 2 components: static (due to gravity) and dynamic (due to motion). Since only the dynamic component is necessary for the calculation of ODBA, there is a need to establish a robust method for determining dynamic acceleration, currently done by substracting static values from the total acceleration. This study investigated the variability in ODBA arising from deriving static acceleration by smoothing total acceleration over different durations. ODBA was calculated for 3 different modes of locomotion within 1 species (the imperial shag) and for swimming in 4 species of marine vertebrates that varied considerably in body size. ODBA was found to vary significantly with the length of the running mean. Furthermore, the variability of ODBA across running means appeared to be related to the stroke period and hence body size. The results suggest that the running mean should be taken over a minimum period of 3 s for species with a dominant stroke period of up to this value. Sensor types in animal-attached tags (e.g. accelerometers, speed sensors and compasses) now often require devices to be solidly attached to an animals' body, which would preclude their use on many large species of shark where current attachment systems are based on tethers. A new method of attaching motion-sensitive tags securely to large sharks is presented which allows free-swimming animals to be equipped without any form of restraint. The system was tested on 11 free-swimming whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. Devices were placed on one of two elongated arms emanating from a torsion spring which acted to force the arms together. The system was clamped to the second dorsal fin using a specially designed tagging-gun operated manually by a snorkeller. Each arm was equipped with two 1.5 cm-long spikes to ensure stable, firm attachment to the fin. Data from the deployments showed that response to the tagging event varied between individuals, with some sharks showing no obvious reaction, while others exhibited a substantial reaction. Clamps remained stable on the sharks throughout the entire duration of all trials. Speed is a key determinant of energy expenditure in free-living animals, and particularlyin marine vertebrates, where power requirements for swimming increase as a cubed function ofthe speed. However, current devices used to measure swim speed in free-living animals have limitations,including excessive drag, low resolution, high stall speed (ca. 0.3 m s–1), cost, biofouling andsusceptibility to damage. We present a speed sensor system that utilises the reflectance of infraredlight against a flexible paddle that bends in relation to the flow of water over the study animal. In laboratorytrials, this performed well across a range of speeds (0.1 to 1.75 m s–1), and had a stall speed of0.1 m s–1. The advantages of this present paddle system are that it is impervious to the presence ofmatter in the water column, is inexpensive and easily replaceable. Furthermore, the system is able torecord speed data at an unparalleled resolution, limited solely by sampling frequency. Data fromdeployments of devices on free-living imperial cormorants Phalacrocorax atriceps identified changesin speed within and between swim strokes, and also showed that greater speed was generated perkick as the buoyancy decreased with depth. Determining the movement of marine animals is logistically difficult and is currently primarily based on VHF and satellite-tracking telemetry, GPS, acoustic telemetry, and geolocation, all of which have substantial limitations in accurately locating the fine-scale movements of these animals. A recent development—that of dead-reckoning—is being increasingly used to examine the fine-scale movement of animals underwater. The advantages and drawbacks of this approach are quite different to those incurred by the other methods. This paper considers the advances that dead-reckoning can bring to the study of the often cryptic movement and behaviour of marine animals at sea. Methods used in determining position via dead-reckoning are presented and consideration is given to results derived from the use of deadreckoning on cetaceans, pinnipeds, penguins and sea turtles; these are complemented by data on cormorants and albatrosses acquired using GPS systems. Suggestions are made as to how movement data derived from these devices can be analysed using indices that allow interpretation over a large variety of temporal and spatial scales. more...

Determination of when and where animals feed and how much they consume is fundamental to understand their ecology and role in ecosystems. However, the lack of reliable data on feeding habits of wild animals, and particularly in marine endotherms, attests to the difficulty in doing this. A promising recent development proposes using a Hall sensor-magnet system, the inter-mandibular angle sensor (IMASEN) attached to animals’ jaws to elucidate feeding events. We conducted trials on captive pinnipeds by feeding IMASEN-equipped animals with prey to examine the utility of this system. Most feeding events were clearly distinguishable from other jaw movements; only small prey items might not be resolved adequately. Based on the results of this study we examined feeding events from free-ranging pinnipeds fitted with IMASENs and dead-reckoners and present data on prey capture and ingestion in relation to the three-dimensional movement patterns of the seals. more...

While modern sampling techniques, such as autonomous underwater vehicles, are increasing our knowledge of the fauna beneath Antarctic sea ice of only a few meters in depth, greater sampling difficulties mean that little is known about the marine life underneath Antarctic ice shelves over 100 m thick. In this study, we present underwater images showing the underside of an Antarctic ice shelf covered by aggregated invertebrate communities, most likely cnidarians and isopods. These images, taken at an average depth of 145 m, were obtained with a digital still camera system attached to Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddellii foraging just beneath the ice shelf. Our observations indicate that, similar to the sea floor, ice shelves serve as an important habitat for a remarkable amount of marine invertebrate fauna in Antarctica. more...

Detailed studies of the behavior and location of free-ranging animals can be considerably enhanced with the use of animal-mounted devices. A few devices, such as data loggers, have to be recovered to access the data, whereas satellite tags or radiocollars often are left on the animal after the study period. Recovery of devices, which usually necessitates animal recapture, can be problematic, especially in larger species. This paper presents a new, non-electronic release mechanism, requiring no power source on the animal, that was successfully tested on South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens) in Argentina during the 2003–2004 austral summer. Purpose: To determine the temporal lobe (TL) damage rate in 96 patients treated with high-dose proton and photon irradiation for chordomas and chondrosarcomas of the base of the skull. Methods and Materials: The records of 96 consecutive patients treated at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Cyclotron Laboratory (HCL) between June 1984 and 1993, for chordomas and chondrosarcomas of the base of the skull were reviewed. All the patients had undergone some degree of resection of the tumor prior to radiation therapy. Seventy-five patients were classified as 'primary tumors' and 21 as recurrent or regrowing tumors after one or more surgical procedures. All the patients were randomized to receive 66.6 or 72 cobalt Gray equivalent (CGE) on a prospective dose-searching study by proton and photon irradiation (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group No.85-26) with conventional fractionation (1.8 CGE/day, 5 fractions/week). All treatments were planned using the three-dimensional (3D) planning system developed at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the dose was delivered using opposed lateral fields for the photon component and a noncoplanar isocentric technique for the proton component. Clinical symptoms of TL damage were classified into 4 grades. Computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were evaluated for white matter changes. Abnormalities associated with persistent or recurrent tumor were distinguished from radiation-induced changes. TLs were delineated on the original scans of the 10 patients with damage and those of a group of 33 patients with no clinical or MRI evidence of injury. Dose distributions were calculated and dose- volume histograms were obtained for these patients. Results: Of the patients, 10 developed TL damage, with bilateral injury in 2 and unilateral injury in 8. The cumulative TL damage incidence at 2 and 5 years was 7.6 and 13.2%, respectively.
