Ferromagnetic topological insulators exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect that might be used for high precision metrology and edge channel spintronics. In conjunction with superconductors, they could host chiral Majorana zero modes which are among the contenders for the realization of topological qubits. Recently, it was discovered that the stable 2+ state of Mn enables the formation of intrinsic magnetic topological insulators with A1B2C4 stoichiometry. However, the first representative, MnBi2Te4, is antiferromagnetic with 25 K N\'eel temperature and strongly n-doped. Here, we show that p-type MnSb2Te4, previously considered topologically trivial, is a ferromagnetic topological insulator in the case of a few percent of Mn excess. It shows (i) a ferromagnetic hysteresis with record high Curie temperature of 45-50 K, (ii) out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and (iii) a two-dimensional Dirac cone with the Dirac point close to the Fermi level which features (iv) out-of-plane spin polarization as revealed by photoelectron spectroscopy and (v) a magnetically induced band gap that closes at the Curie temperature as demonstrated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Moreover, it displays (vi) a critical exponent of magnetization beta~1, indicating the vicinity of a quantum critical point. Ab initio band structure calculations reveal that the slight excess of Mn that substitutionally replaces Sb atoms provides the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling. Remaining deviations from the ferromagnetic order, likely related to this substitution, open the inverted bulk band gap and render MnSb2Te4 a robust topological insulator and new benchmark for magnetic topological insulators.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to study the surface and subsurface properties of the metastable phase of the phase change material Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ as grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The (111) surface is covered by an intact Te layer, which nevertheless allows to detect the more disordered subsurface layer made of Ge and Sb atoms. Centrally, we find that the subsurface layer is significantly more ordered than expected for metastable Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$. Firstly, we show that vacancies are nearly absent within the subsurface layer. Secondly, the potential fluctuation, tracked by the spatial variation of the valence band onset, is significantly less than expected for a random distribution of atoms and vacancies in the subsurface layer. The strength of the fluctuation is compatible with the potential distribution of charged acceptors without being influenced by other types of defects. Thirdly, DFT calculations predict a partially tetrahedral Ge bonding within a disordered subsurface layer, exhibiting a clear fingerprint in the local density of states as a peak close to the conduction band onset. This peak is absent in the STS data implying the absence of tetrahedral Ge, which is likely due to the missing vacancies required for structural relaxation around the shorter tetrahedral Ge bonds. Finally, isolated defect configurations with a low density of $~10^{-4}$/nm$^2$ are identified by comparison of STM and DFT data, which corroborates the significantly improved order in the epitaxial films driven by the build-up of vacancy layers., Comment: 11 pages, 7 images, submitted to Phys. Suspended graphene is difficult to image by scanning probe microscopy due to the inherent van-der-Waals and dielectric forces exerted by the tip which are not counteracted by a substrate. Here, we report scanning tunneling microscopy data of suspended monolayer graphene in constant-current mode revealing a surprising honeycomb structure with amplitude of 50$-$200 pm and lattice constant of 10-40 nm. The apparent lattice constant is reduced by increasing the tunneling current $I$, but does not depend systematically on tunneling voltage $V$ or scan speed $v_{\rm scan}$. The honeycomb lattice of the rippling is aligned with the atomic structure observed on supported areas, while no atomic corrugation is found on suspended areas down to the resolution of about $3-4$ pm. We rule out that the honeycomb structure is induced by the feedback loop using a changing $v_{\rm scan}$, that it is a simple enlargement effect of the atomic resolution as well as models predicting frozen phonons or standing phonon waves induced by the tunneling current. Albeit we currently do not have a convincing explanation for the observed effect, we expect that our intriguing results will inspire further research related to suspended graphene., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, modified, more detailed discussion on errors in vdW parameters

The inversion layer of p-InSb(110) obtained by Cs adsorption of 1.8 % of a monolayer is used to probe the Landau level wave functions within smooth potential valleys by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy at 14 T. The nodal structure becomes apparent as a double peak structure of each spin polarized first Landau level, while the zeroth Landau level exhibits a single peak per spin level only. The real space data show single rings of the valley-confined drift states for the zeroth Landau level and double rings for the first Landau level. The result is reproduced by a recursive Green's function algorithm using the potential landscape obtained experimentally. A comprehensive mapping of the spin polarization of the electronic bands in ferroelectric a-GeTe(111) films has been performed using a time-of-flight momentum microscope equipped with an imaging spin filter that enables a simultaneous measurement of more than 10.000 data points (voxels). A Rashba type splitting of both surface and bulk bands with opposite spin helicity of the inner and outer Rashba bands is found revealing a complex spin texture at the Fermi energy. The switchable inner electric field of GeTe implies new functionalities for spintronic devices.

The interrelation between spin and charge in semiconductors leads to interesting effects, e.g., the Rashba-type spin-orbit splitting or the exchange enhancement. These properties are proposed to be used in applications such as spin transistors or spin qubits. Probing them on the local scale with the ultimate spatial resolution of the scanning tunneling microscope addresses their susceptibility to disorder directly. Here we review the results obtained on two-dimensional semiconductor systems (2DES). We describe the preparation and characterization of an adequate 2DES which can be probed by scanning tunneling microscopy. It is shown how the electron density and the disorder within the 2DES can be tuned and measured. The observed local density of states of weakly and strongly disordered systems is discussed in detail. It is shown that the weakly disordered 2DES exhibits quantum Hall effect in magnetic field. The corresponding local density of states across a quantum Hall transition is mapped showing the development from localized states to extended states and back to localized states in real space. Decoupling the 2DES from screening electrons of the bulk of the III-V semiconductor leads to a measurable exchange enhancement of up to 0.7 meV which depends on the local spin polarization of the 2DES. At stronger confinement potential, i.e. larger doping, the Rashba spin splitting with $\alpha$ as large as $7\cdot 10^{-11}$eVm is observed as a beating in the density of states in magnetic field. Using high resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we map the electronic structure and spin texture of the surface states of the topological insulator Sb2Te3. In combination with density functional calculations (DFT), we directly show that Sb2Te3 exhibits a partially occupied, single spin-Dirac cone around the Fermi energy, which is topologically protected. DFT obtains a spin polarization of the occupied Dirac cone states of 80-90%, which is in reasonable agreement with the experimental data after careful background subtraction. Furthermore, we observe a strongly spin-orbit split surface band at lower energy. This state is found at 0.8eV below the Fermi level at the gamma-point, disperses upwards, and disappears at about 0.4eV below the Fermi level into two different bulk bands. Along the gamma-K direction, the band is located within a spin-orbit gap. According to an argument given by Pendry and Gurman in 1975, such a gap must contain a surface state, if it is located away from the high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we map the local density of states (LDOS) of graphene quantum dots supported on Ir(111). Due to a band gap in the projected Ir band structure around the graphene K point, the electronic properties of the QDs are dominantly graphene-like. Indeed, we compare the results favorably with tight binding calculations on the honeycomb lattice based on parameters derived from density functional theory. We find that the interaction with the substrate near the edge of the island gradually opens a gap in the Dirac cone, which implies soft-wall confinement. Interestingly, this confinement results in highly symmetric wave functions. Further influences of the substrate are given by the known moir{\'e} potential and a 10% penetration of an Ir surface resonance, Comment: 7 pages, 11 figures, DFT calculations directly showing the origin of soft confinment, correct identification of the state penetrating from Ir(111) into graphene

Using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy applied to the Cs-induced two-dimensional electron system (2DES) on p-type InSb(110), we probe electron-electron interaction effects in the quantum Hall regime. The 2DES is decoupled from p-doped bulk states and exhibits spreading resistance within the insulating quantum Hall phases. In quantitative agreement with calculations we find an exchange enhancement of the spin splitting. Moreover, we observe that both the spatially averaged as well as the local density of states feature a characteristic Coulomb gap at the Fermi level. These results show that electron-electron interaction effects can be probed down to a resolution below all relevant length scales., Comment: supplementary movie in ancillary files

Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at 5 K in B-fields up to 7 T, we investigate the local density of states of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) created by Cs adsorption on p-type InSb(110). The 2DES, which in contrast to previous STS studies exhibits a 2D Fermi level, shows standing waves at B = 0 T with corrugations decreasing with energy and with wave numbers in accordance with theory. In magnetic field percolating drift states are observed within the disorder broadened Landau levels. Due to the large electric field perpendicular to the surface, a beating pattern of the Landau levels is found and explained quantitatively by Rashba spin splitting within the lowest 2DES subband. Using the recently developed technique of microsoldering, we perform a systematic transport study of the influence of PMMA on graphene flakes revealing a doping effect of up to 3.8x10^12 1/cm^2, but a negligible influence on mobility and gate voltage induced hysteresis. Moreover, we show that the microsoldered graphene is free of contamination and exhibits a very similar intrinsic rippling as has been found for lithographically contacted flakes. Finally, we demonstrate a current induced closing of the previously found phonon gap appearing in scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments, strongly non-linear features at higher bias probably caused by vibrations of the flake and a B-field induced double peak attributed to the 0.Landau level of graphene., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The recently found material graphene is a truly two-dimensional crystal and exhibits, in addition, an extreme mechanical strength. This in combination with the high electron mobility favours graphene for electromechanical investigations down to the quantum limit. Here, we show that a monolayer of graphene on SiO2 provides natural, ultra-small membranes of diameters down to 3 nm, which are caused by the intrinsic rippling of the material. Some of these nano-membranes can be switched hysteretically between two vertical positions using the electric field of the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). They can also be forced to oscillatory motion by a low frequency ac-field. Using the mechanical constants determined previously, we estimate a high resonance frequency up to 0.4 THz. This might be favorable for quantum-electromechanics and is prospective for single atom mass spectrometers., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in ultra high vacuum and atomic force microscopy, we investigate the corrugation of graphene flakes deposited by exfoliation on a Si/SiO2 (300 nm) surface. While the corrugation on SiO2 is long-range with a correlation length of about 25 nm, some of the graphene monolayers exhibit an additional corrugation with a preferential wave length of about 15 nm. A detailed analysis shows that the long range corrugation of the substrate is also visible on graphene, but with a reduced amplitude, leading to the conclusion that the graphene is partly freely suspended between hills of the substrate. Thus, the intrinsic rippling observed previously on artificially suspended graphene can exist as well, if graphene is deposited on SiO2., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, including supplementary material
