High invasiveness and well-documented negative impact on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning make Solidago canadensis L. a species of global concern. Despite a good understanding of the driving factors of its invasions, it remains unclear how the surrounding landscape may shape invasion success of this species in human-transformed ecosystems. In our study, we investigated the impacts of different landscape features in the proximity of early successional wastelands on S. canadensis biomass allocation patterns. Further, we examined the relationships between the surrounding landscape, S. canadensis cover, and plant functional diversity, used as a supportive approach for the explanation of mechanisms underlying successful S. canadensis invasion. We found that increasing river net length had positive impacts on S. canadensis rhizome, stem, and total above ground biomass, but negative effects on leaf biomass, indicating that vegetative spread may perform the dominant role in shaping the competitiveness of this invader in riverine landscapes. A higher proportion of arable lands positively influenced S. canadensis above ground and flower biomass; thus promoting S. canadensis invasion in agricultural landscapes with the prominent role of habitat filtering in shaping vegetation structure. Concerning an increasing proportion of settlements, flower biomass was higher and leaf biomass was lower, thereby influencing S. canadensis reproductive potential, maximizing the odds for survival, and indicating high adaptability to exist in an urban landscape. We demonstrated high context-dependency of relationships between functional diversity components and surrounding landscape, strongly influenced by S. canadensis cover, while the effects of surrounding landscape composition per se were of lower importance. Investigating the relationships between the surrounding landscape, invasive species performance, and plant functional diversity, may constitute a powerful tool for the monitoring, controlling, and predicting of invasion progress, as well as the assessment of ecosystem invasibility.

Investigating the direction of changes in functional diversity involving successional pathways and historical disturbances may be a promising tool for predictions of the effectiveness of the seminatural meadows conservation, with great emphasis on formulation of more cost‐effective restoration strategies. The goal of this research was to assess the differences in long‐term shifts in the functional diversity of plant species in seminatural wet meadows unmanaged for the last 40 years, under the influence of different successional pathways and historical disturbances. Using ordination techniques, linear mixed‐effect models, a set of plant functional traits and parameters of functional diversity, we assessed the importance of habitat filtering, competition, and niche partitioning in shaping community assembly changes over time. The most dramatic shifts in functional diversity were found in the Carex acutiformis successional pathway after topsoil removal, where colonization by successional inhibitors was the main driver causing decreases in functional dispersion and divergence. This was expressed as a decrease in the importance of habitat filtering and replacement of specialized species by competitors with heavier seeds and higher specific leaf area. Regarding the C. cespitosa and Salix cinerea pathways, the magnitudes of shifts in functional diversity were milder and differed less between the historical topsoil removal and mowing treatments, thereby maintaining a large role for niche partitioning in shaping the vegetation structure. Railway territories are man-made habitats forming corridors for non-native species migration. In this study, we assessed non-native species occurrence in plant communities along a railway route of the Bialowieza Primeval Forest in Poland in relation to adjacent plant community type and microhabitat (embankment western and eastern sides of the railway track, intertrack space). An 11-km fragment of a narrow-gauge railway route in the western part of the Bialowieza Primeval Forest was investigated. This fragment was divided into 416 sections where all observed non-native species were identified, and all individuals, ramets and tussocks were counted. We discovered 12 non-native taxa, most of which (8 species) originated from North America. The highest average number of non-native species per section was recorded in the vicinity of the Circeo-Alnetum community. Statistically, more non-native species occurred on the western embankment than on the eastern one and in the intertrack space. The use of the narrow-gauge railway in the Bialowieza Forest has increased the risk of establishment of invasive species in local plant communities. The Bialowieza Forest is a refuge for native biodiversity of the utmost importance. Thus, continuous monitoring of the occurrence of non-native species is necessary for the preservation of native plant communities in the vicinity of the narrow-gauge railway route assessed in this study.

Long-lived clonal plants provide an optimal place for the natural storage of seeds as a ‘non-soil seed bank’. We tested the hypothesis that the size and species diversity of a non-soil seed bank deposited within the clonal plant Carex cespitosa depends mainly on the plant's size. To verify this hypothesis, an experiment was conducted on an unmown meadow in the Bialowieza National Park. The emerging seedlings of different species originating from C. cespitosa tussocks of different size (large and small) were observed under greenhouse conditions for four years. The size of a non-soil seed bank was evaluated based on the number of seedlings. Significant differences in the seedling number were found between large and small sedge tussocks (Mann-Whitney test Z = 3.96, P < 0.001). Amongst the numerous consequences of the rapid development of agriculture and urbanization, biological invasions are highlighted as having the biggest impact on the functioning of ecosystems. One of the alien plant species, considered in Europe and Asia to be highly invasive, is Solidago canadensis L.; and its impact on the functioning of ecosystems has been studied in numerous respects. However, knowledge about how the physico-chemical parameters of soils and biotic interactions between species shape the performance of S. canadensis in a transformed landscape is still insufficient. The aim of this study was to assess how complex soil abiotic conditions and the functional diversity of co-occurring vegetation shape the performance of S. canadensis on the wastelands abandoned by agriculture. Apart from detailed investigations of soil properties and S. canadensis biomass, to achieve our study aims, we used parameters of functional diversity, which allowed us to identify the main ecological processes determining the community assembly processes. Under higher contents of loamy fractions in soil, but lower functional richness in surroundings, S. canadensis achieved larger cover. Alongside increasing functional richness and dispersion in co-occurring vegetation, this species has demonstrated sturdy attributes when competing for water and nutrients, expressed by a higher production of rhizomes and roots. Under elevated zinc and lead levels, as well as higher functional evenness in the surroundings, the flower biomass decreased, while the biomass of stems increased. Thus, S. canadensis exhibits a highly adaptive capacity to grow in soils contaminated by heavy metals, due to the buffer properties and life strategies allowing the use of resources absorbed in loamy soils. Environmental factors seem to be more responsible for the shaping of the performance and for the colonization success of S. canadensis than biotic interactions with plants occurring in the surroundings.

Invasive plant species pose a threat to the diversity of natural habitats. The extent of the changes depends, among others, on soil properties, settlement time and the degree of coverage of sites by an invasive species. The objective of this study was to determine changes in the habitats of Solidago canadensis at two localities in Poland that differ in soil fertility and acidity. The content of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as pH were analysed from soil samples collected from the sites invaded by S. canadensis and from the control sites. The composition and species richness of vascular plant communities at the same sites were also determined. The analyses revealed an increase in the soil organic carbon content and in the C/N ratio at the sites invaded by S. canadensis. The presence of S. canadensis also reduced the number of vascular plant species, mainly annuals and perennials. Thus, an increase in S. canadensis cover results in soil degradation and habitat homogenization.

The aim of the study was to compare the contents of Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe in the washed and unwashed leaves and roots of two plant species: Urica dioica L. and Plantago major L., used in herbal medicine. These two herb species occur in the same environmental habitats, yet their morphological structure is different. The soil and plant samples for analyses were collected from an uncontaminated area in Eastern Poland. In each habitat location, the samples were taken from sandy soils with slightly acidic and neutral pH values. The obtained results showed that U. dioica and P. major accumulated similar amounts of trace metals, such as: Cu, Zn and Fe, in leaves, despite the differences in the morphological structure of their overground parts. The content of Mn in leaves U. dioica was about twice as much as in P. major. Also, no differences in the metal content were observed between washed and unwashed leaves of both species. However, in the same habitat conditions, a significantly higher content of Cu, Zn and Mn was found in the roots of P. major than U. dioica. The content of Fe in the roots was similar in both species. P. major and U. dioica may be a valuable source of microelements, if they are obtained from unpolluted habitats.

The study was aimed at investigating the relationship between the number of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) structures present in the pyloric section of the abomasum and fat accumulation in carcasses of bulls – crosses of Polish Lowland Black-andWhite cows mated with Limousin bulls. The bulls were slaughtered at the mean age of 629 days and body weight of 597 kg. The distribution of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcriptimmunoreactive in the pyloric section of abomasum was assessed on the basis of CART positive immunohistochemical reactions. Significant interdependence was found between the number of CART structures and carcass adiposity and the fat content of the longissimus lumborum muscle. The identified tendency for fat tissue increase in the carcasses was accompanied by a lower concentration of the structures. In the endocrine system cell the greatest number of immunopositive cells were found; ranging from 28.9 in animals more obese to 37.8 with the smallest amount of fat accumulated. The lowest numbers of immunopositive cells, ranging from 2.4 to 3.9 were noted in the submucous plexus layer. Slightly more structures were observed in nerve fibres and the myenteric plexus, at 2.9 and 4.7, respectively. The number of CART in the endocrine system was correlated with subcutaneous fat (-0.451) and marbling (-0.514). The amount of CART in these anatomical layers was significantly correlated with the thickness of subcutaneous fat (-0.541 and -0.636) and the weight of perinephric fat (-0.487 and -0.672). The results confirm that CART is an important neurotransmitter that participates in the regulation of fat deposition in the body. It must be stressed that the correlations with the analysed fat deposition indices concerned the adiposity indicators influencing the commercial value of carcasses and the meat traits important to the consumer. This study examined a non-soil seed bank deposited inside the tussock cores of Carex cespitosa, a perennial plant with a tussock growth form. Based on the vertical structure of the seed bank in 20 tussock cores, the history of changes in plant species composition during succession in an unmowed grassland in the Bialowieza National Park was reconstructed. Three horizontal layers were distinguished in each tussock core: upper (corresponding to the initial forest stage), middle (transitory stage—forb and swamp communities) and bottom (early successional stage—grassland). The results showed that seeds of both the parental species and other species were stored inside the C. cespitosa tussock cores. More than 50,000 seedlings were found, representing 42 vascular plant species. The highest number of seedlings was recorded in the middle layer. Seedlings of swamp species were dominant in the upper layer, whereas seedlings of grassland species were dominant in the other layers. The highest number of C. cespitosa seedlings was observed in the upper layer. The most common seedlings in the middle layer belonged to the species Epilobium palustre, Lythrum salicaria and Cirsium palustre. In the bottom layer, the most common species of seedlings were grassland species, e.g. Lychnis flos-cuculi and Ranunculus repens. The protected seed bank inside this tussock species reflected recorded changes in species composition of these grasslands through time. Seed banks in this and other tussock-forming species represent a potentially useful tool for reconstructing recent developmental history of plant communities.

This study deals with population dynamics of Cirsium rivulare (brook thistle) present in a meadow that undergoes succession as a result of former disuse. The effect of the following in the succession, currently dominant clonal species and necromass on the performance of the brook thistle population (presence, size of clusters and reproduction) was investigated. The regression stage, the Cirsium rivulare population had attained after mowing, was discontinued. Different kinds of influence from the contiguous species on the brook thistle population could be identified. In the case of Filipendula ulmaria and Carex cespitosa , Cirsium rivulare clusters were found to be present on the edge of the dominant patches. In case of Carex acutiformis patches brook thistle ramets did not form clusters but were present among the sedge ramets. No Cirsium rivulare ramets were found in Phragmites australis and willow ( Salix cinerea , S. pentandra and S. aurita ) patches. The highest number of generative brook thistle ramets were observed in a Carex acutiformis patch, whereas the highest number of inflorescences on the shoots of the analysed species were identified in the patch dominated by Filipendula ulmaria . Experimental vegetation gaps were created in patches dominated by various species to determine the effect of necromass on the presence of Cirsium rivulare seedlings. A considerable rise in the number of Cirsium rivulare seedlings was noted in Carex acutiformis and Filipendula ulmaria patches following necromass removal in comparison with plots containing necromass. On the other hand, removing the necromass and foliage did not contribute to an increase in the numbers of brook thistle seedlings in the patch dominated by Cirsium rivulare itself.

This study shows an association between the frequency of the nan1 gene (encoding neuraminidase) among 62 clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates and adhesion of these bacteria to human buccal epithelial cells. The 52 strains in which the gene was present (83.9%) were characterized by a higher adhesiveness (the mean number of adhering bacteria was 23.51 per cell) than strains in which the gene was not detected (16.23 per cell) and the difference was significant (P = 0.009, Mann-Whitney U test). Thus we found that the nan1 gene may play a role in the binding of clinical P. aeruginosa strains to buccal cells.

Cirsium rivulare is a perennial plant that forms patches consisting of ramets resulting from sexual reproduction by seeds and asexual propagation by rhizome fragmentation. We examined the relationship between the size of patches and genetic differentiation of ramets within and between patches. Ramet genotypes were identified using microsatellites. From among 216 ramets examined in the studied population, 123 had a unique genotype, while 93 were clonal, i.e., their genotype was present in at least two ramets. The frequency of ramets with clonal genotypes was 43% and the frequency of unique genotypes was 57%. Ramets with identical genotypes were dominant in small patches. Large patches consisted of ramets with both unique and clonal genotypes, usually with the predominance of the latter. A molecular variance analysis showed the highest level of variance between ramets and the lowest between patches. Additionally, 21.02% of the total variance was recorded between ramets and within patches. The size of patches was correlated with the number of clonal ramets and the number of unique ramets, but it was not correlated with the clonality index. This population of C. rivulare is currently in a phase of decline from 30 years of vegetation transformation, and there appears to have been an increase in sexual propagation based growth over clonal propagation based growth. Hence, a predominance of ramets with unique genotypes was observed. This can happen as a result of disintegration of large patches and formation of gaps between them. These gaps become convenient places for seed germination and the subsequent development of seedlings.

The functioning of nesting colonies of birds can significantly affect the flora and the soil. Colony species that modify soil characteristics at their nesting sites include the Rook Corvus frugilegus. In order to assess the effect of this species on poor and fertile habitats, we analysed biogenic element concentrations and soil acidity, and investigated the taxonomic representation of plants under the nests and at control sites without nests. Two-way ANOVA showed that the habitats significantly differed in most of soil parameters. The presence of Rook colonies contributed to increased humidity and acidity of the soil and a higher biogenic element content. A varied influence of Rook colonies on plant species diversity was observed, depending on habitat type. Rook nesting caused a fall in the overall number of plant species in the poor habitats, and a corresponding rise in the fertile habitats. Rooks contributed to a rise in the mean number of ruderal species and a fall in the mean number of meadow species. A synergy between habitat type and collection site was identified in the case of ornithochorous species.
