Abstract Today wireless systems include the fifth and sixth generations (5G and 6G) technologies and are growing day by day that result in exponentially increasing data traffic. For providing a reliable and high performance radio frequency (RF) designs especially for 6G networks, amplifiers and antenna as active and passive components play important roles. In the 5G/6G communication systems, the propagation loss is considerably large and its compensation requires high output power generated from the amplifiers for guaranteeing the satisfied quality of transmitted signal. From another point of view, the installed antennas must be able to optimally manage the radiated signals and handle/compensate nonlinear performances of the RF circuitry. Hence, advanced modeling and multi-objective optimization algorithms are required for designing and optimizing high performance amplifiers and antennas in terms of output power, gain, efficiency, linearity, and bandwidth. Concurrently optimizing active and passive components is not straightforward and typically it requires additional efforts by the RF designers. To tackle this drawback, a two-step methodology is proposed: (1) configuring the initial structure of active and passive devices, and (2) sizing the configured devices. In this work, various methods are introduced for structuring the topology of circuits and then artificial intelligence, including machine learning and neural networks, is preferred among other surrogate modelling for sizing the designs. These neural networks are satisfied due to the accurate modeling responses and are able to provide an automated optimization process leads to employ multi-objective optimization methods. In this work, an automated optimization process for comprehensive design of high-performance amplifiers with antennas through bottom-up optimization (BUO) method and long short-term memory (LSTM)-based deep neural networks (DNNs) is proposed. At the output layer of DNNs, the multi-objective multi-verse optimizer (MOMVO) method is employed for optimizing various specifications of active device (i.e., amplifier), and passive device (i.e., antenna), concurrently. In the presented method, all the electromagnetic (EM) design rules are implemented which results in reducing simulation time in the harmonic balance simulation environment that also provides ready to fabricate layouts. The novelty consists of the all-inclusive style that (1) reduces the manual breaks, aka time-to-market, and (2) delivers ready-to-fabricate layouts of the device that exhibits global optimum performances, automatically. The validation of the proposed method is verified by designing and optimizing high power amplifier (HPA) with antenna in the frequency band from 9.0 GHz to 9.6 GHz, suitable for upper-mid band 6G communications.

Abstract Within the evolving landscape of fifth‐generation (5G) wireless networks, the introduction of network‐slicing protocols has become pivotal, enabling the accommodation of diverse application needs while fortifying defences against potential security breaches. This study endeavours to construct a comprehensive network‐slicing model integrated with an attack detection system within the 5G framework. Leveraging software‐defined networking (SDN) along with deep learning techniques, this approach seeks to fortify security measures while optimizing network performance. This undertaking introduces network slicing predicated on SDN with the OpenFlow protocol and Ryu control technology, complemented by a neural network model for attack detection using deep learning methodologies. Additionally, the proposed convolutional neural networks‐long short‐term memory approach demonstrates superiority over conventional ML algorithms, signifying its potential for real‐time attack detection. Evaluation of the proposed system using a 5G dataset showcases an impressive accuracy of 99%, surpassing previous studies, and affirming the efficacy of the approach. Moreover, network slicing significantly enhances quality of service by segmenting services based on bandwidth. Future research will concentrate on real‐world implementation, encompassing diverse dataset evaluations, and assessing the model's adaptability across varied scenarios.

A methodology for beam-steering using operational amplifiers (Op-amps) is presented. Continuous steering is required in various advanced applications and its implementation necessitates additional efforts since singularly control of the feeding of the radiators is mandatory for both phase and amplitude. The present work proposes a technique for generating the required sequence of the feeding signal using two Op-amps for each input port. It leads to generating incremental phases with sequential Op-amps without any limitation in the value of the phase differences, controlled by the bias voltage applied to the Op-amps, hence giving rise to a continuous beam-steering capability. The study case consists of a four-stage oscillator designed for creating a sequence of signals with progressive phase shifts between consecutive outputs. The general scheme allows continuous control of the phase differences here applied for generating a uniform, i.e., constant signal magnitude, feeding sequence. This set of signals is then used to feed a four-element microstrip array operating at 1.2 GHz. The effectiveness of the method is validated by numerical simulation of the array performances. Additionally, the low power consumption of active Op-amps, easy implementation, and high sensitivity are characteristics of the presented paradigm.

Rain attenuation poses a significant challenge for high-throughput communication systems. In response, this paper introduces an artificial intelligence (AI) model designed for predicting and mitigating rain-induced impairments in high-throughput satellite (HTS) to land channels. The model is based on three AI algorithms developed using 3D antenna design to characterize, analyze, and mitigate rain-induced attenuation, optimizing channel quality specifically in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The study evaluates various parameters, including rain-specific attenuation, effective slant path through rain, rain-induced attenuation, signal carrier-to-noise ratio, and symbol error rate, for five conventional modulation schemes: Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying (QPSK), 8-Phase Shift Keying (8-PSK), 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM), 32-QAM, and 64-QAM. Additionally, the paper introduces a new database detailing rain-induced attenuation in HTS channels in the UAE at different frequencies using measured rainfall intensities. The paper concludes by proposing a smart antenna design with a frequency diversity technique for fade mitigation. Results indicate that rain-induced attenuation varies significantly based on rainfall rate and frequency. Specifically, at 25 GHz and a rainfall rate of 100 mm/h, the rain-induced attenuation can reach as high as 15 dB, resulting in a significant decline in signal quality and link performance. The

Abstract This paper describes an innovative design of an antenna array that is metamaterial inspired using sub-wavelength slots and defected ground structure (DGS) for operation over millimeter-wave and terahertz (THz) spectrum. The proposed antenna array consists of a 2 × 4 array of conductive boxes on which are implemented rectangular slots. The presence of dielectric slots introduces resonant modes within the structure. These resonant modes result in enhancing the electromagnetic fields within the slots, which radiate energy into free space. The resonant frequencies and radiation patterns depend on the specific geometry of the slots and the dielectric properties. The antenna array is excited through a single microstrip line. The radiating elements in the array are interconnected to each other with a microstrip line. Unwanted mutual coupling between the radiating elements can degrade the performance of the antenna. This was mitigated by defecting the ground plane with rectangular slots. It is shown that this technique can enhance the array’s reflection coefficient over a wider bandwidth. The array was constructed on polyimide substrate having dielectric constant of 3.5 and thickness of 20 μm. The design was modelled, and its performance verified using an industry standard electromagnetic package by CST Studio Suite. The proposed array antenna has dimensions of 20 × 10 mm2 and operates between 80 and 200 GHz for radiation gain better than 4 dBi and efficiency above 55%. The peak radiation gain and efficiency are 7.5 dBi and 75% at 91 GHz, respectively. The operational frequency range of the array corresponds to a fractional bandwidth of 85.71%.

This paper proposes a transmitter system based on direct antenna amplitude-shift keying modulation for point-to-point microwave link. The proposed system is formed from a conventional microstrip antenna and a novel reconfigurable metasurface layer (RMSL). The proposed RMSL has two states: OFF (or Logic-0) and ON (or Logic-1) where each switching scenario provides a certain gain level. This is achieved through controlling the proposed RMSL switching configuration to control the amplitude of the transmitted signal. Results show that such a system can modulate electromagnetic signals directly by varying the antenna’s gain from about 2 dBi for Logic-0 to 13.8 dBi for Logic-1. An analytical model-based ray-tracing technique is invoked to explain the operation of the proposed antenna system. To demonstrate the operation of the proposed system, both the antenna and the RMSL structures were fabricated, assembled and tested. Measurements show good agreement with the theoretical model and numerical simulations obtained using CST Microwave Studio software package. The overall system has dimensions of $25\times 25 \times 7.3$ cm3.

Abstract The present paper introduces an optimization-oriented method here practiced for designing high performance single antennas in a fully automated environment. The proposed method comprises two sequential major steps. The first one devotes configuring the shape of antenna and determining the feeding point by employing the bottom-up optimization (BUO) method. In this algorithm, the number of microstrip transmission lines (TLs) used to model the radiator is increased consecutively and the shape of the antenna is revised up to finding the initial satisfying results. Secondly, for determining the best design parameters of the configured antenna shape in the first step (i.e., width and length of TLs), deep neural network (DNN) that is based on Thompson sampling efficient multi-objective optimization (TSEMO) is applied. The recommended optimization method is successfully attracted as a problem solver for designers to tackle the subject for antenna design such as the complexity and large dimensions of structures. Hence, the main advantage of the implemented optimization method in this article is to noticeably decrease the required designer’s involvement automatically generating valid layouts. For validating the suggested method, two wideband antennas are designed, prototyped and subjected to experiment. The first optimized antenna covers the frequency band 8.8–10.1 GHz (43 % bandwidth) characterized by a maximum gain of 7.13 dB while the second one covers the frequency band 11.3–13.16 GHz (47.5 %) which exhibits a maximum gain of 7.8 dB.

In this paper, a low-cost resin-coated commercial-photo-paper substrate is used to design a printed reconfigurable multiband antenna. The two PIN diodes are used mainly to redistribute the surface current that provides reconfigurable properties to the proposed antenna. The antenna size of 40 mm × 40 mm × 0.44 mm with a partial ground, covers wireless and mobile bands ranging from 1.91 GHz to 6.75 GHz. The parametric analysis is performed to achieve optimized design parameters of the antenna. The U-shaped and C-shaped emitters are meant to function at 2.4 GHz and 5.9 GHz, respectively, while the primary emitter is designed to operate at 3.5 GHz. The proposed antenna achieved peak gain and radiation efficiency of 3.4 dBi and 90%, respectively. Simulated and measured results of the reflection coefficient, radiation pattern, gain, and efficiency show that the antenna design is in favorable agreement. Since the proposed antenna achieved wideband (1.91–6.75 GHz) using PIN diode configuration, using this technique the need for numerous electronic components to provide multiband frequency is avoided.

The development of remote health monitoring systems has focused on enhancing healthcare services’ efficiency and quality, particularly in chronic disease management and elderly care. These systems employ a range of sensors and wearable devices to track patients’ health status and offer real-time feedback to healthcare providers. This facilitates prompt interventions and reduces hospitalization rates. The aim of this study is to explore the latest developments in the realm of remote health monitoring systems. In this paper, we explore a wide range of domains, spanning antenna designs, small implantable antennas, on-body wearable solutions, and adaptable detection and imaging systems. Our research also delves into the methodological approaches used in monitoring systems, including the analysis of channel characteristics, advancements in wireless capsule endoscopy, and insightful investigations into sensing and imaging techniques. These advancements hold the potential to improve the accuracy and efficiency of monitoring, ultimately contributing to enhanced health outcomes for patients.

This paper presents a technique to mitigate multiple access interference (MAI) in multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) wireless communications systems. Although under normal circumstances the MC-CDMA system can achieve high spectral efficiency and resistance towards inter symbol interference (ISI) however when exposed to substantial nonlinear distortion the issue of MAI manifests. Such distortion results when the power amplifiers are driven into saturation or when the transmit signal experiences extreme adverse channel conditions. The proposed technique uses a modified iterative block decision feedback equalizer (IB-DFE) that uses a minimal mean square error (MMSE) receiver in the feed-forward path to nullify the residual interference from the IB-DFE receiver. The received signal is re-filtered in an iterative process to significantly improve the MC-CDMA system’s performance. The effectiveness of the proposed modified IB-DFE technique in MC-CDMA systems has been analysed under various harsh nonlinear conditions, and the results of this analysis presented here confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique to outperform conventional methodologies in terms of the bit error rate (BER) and lesser computational complexity.

Abstract An automated optimization process for designing and optimising high‐performance single microstrip antennas is presented. It consists of the successive use of two optimization methods, bottom‐up optimization (BUO) and Bayesian optimization (BO), which are applied sequentially, resulting in electromagnetic (EM)‐based artificial neural network modelling. The BUO method is applied for the initial design of the structure of the antennas whereas the BO approach is successively implemented to predict suitable dimensional parameters, leading to broadband, high flat‐gain antennas. The optimization process is performed automatically with the combination of an electronic design automation tool and a numerical analyser. The proposed method is easy to use; it allows one to perform the design with little experience, because both structure modelling and sizing are performed automatically. To verify the power of the proposed EM‐based method experimentally, two single microstrip antennas have been designed, optimised, fabricated, and measured. The first antenna has flat‐gain performance (6.9–7.2 dB) in a frequency band of 8.8–10 GHz. The second has been designed to perform in the 8.7‐ to 10‐GHz band, where it exhibits flat‐gain performance with reduced fluctuation in the range of 6.7–7 dB. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical data.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is the transmission of electrical energy to other external/internal devices without the need for wire connection. Such a system is useful to power electrical devices as a promising technology for various emerging applications. The implementation of devices integrated with WPT alters the existing technologies and enhance the theoretical concept for future works. Over the last decade, various studies have been conducted on the applications of magnetically coupled WPT systems, where a general overview over such devices would be beneficial. Hence, this paper presents a comprehensive review over various WPT systems developed for commercially existing applications. The importance of WPT systems is first reported from the engineering point of view, followed by their uses in biomedical devices.

Continuous monitoring and treatment of various diseases with biomedical technologies and wearable electronics has become significantly important. The healthcare area is an important, evolving field that, among other things, requires electronic and micro-electromechanical technologies. Designed circuits and smart devices can lead to reduced hospitalization time and hospitals equipped with high-quality equipment. Some of these devices can also be implanted inside the body. Recently, various implanted electronic devices for monitoring and diagnosing diseases have been presented. These instruments require communication links through wireless technologies. In the transmitters of these devices, power amplifiers are the most important components and their performance plays important roles. This paper is devoted to collecting and providing a comprehensive review on the various designed implanted amplifiers for advanced biomedical applications. The reported amplifiers vary with respect to the class/type of amplifier, implemented CMOS technology, frequency band, output power, and the overall efficiency of the designs. The purpose of the authors is to provide a general view of the available solutions, and any researcher can obtain suitable circuit designs that can be selected for their problem by reading this survey.

Due to the exponential growth of data communications, linearity specification is deteriorating and, in high frequency systems, impedance transformation leading to power delivering from power amplifiers (PAs) to antennas is becoming an increasingly important concept. Intelligent-based optimization methods can be a suitable solution for enhancing this characteristic in the transceiver systems. Herein, to tackle the problems of linearity and impedance transformations, deep neural network (DNN)-based optimizations are employed. In the first phase, the antenna is modeled through the DNN with using the long short-term memory (LSTM) leading to forecast the load impedances in the a wide frequency band. Afterwards, the PA is modeled and optimized through another LSTM-based DNN using Multivariate Newton’s Method where the optimal drain impedances are predicted from the first DNN (i.e., modeled antenna). The whole optimization methodology is executed automatically leading to enhance linearity specification of the whole system. For proving the novelty of the proposed method, monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) along with the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is designed, modeled, and optimized concurrently in the frequency band from 7.49 GHz to 12.44 GHz. The proposed method leads to enhancing the linearity of the transceiver in an effective way where DNN-based PA model gives rise to a solution for achieving the most optimal drain impedance through the modeled DNN-based antenna.

Wireless networks have gained significant attention and importance in healthcare as various medical devices such as mobile devices, sensors, and remote monitoring equipment must be connected to communication networks. In order to provide advanced medical treatments to patients, high-performance technologies such as the emerging fifth generation/sixth generation (5G/6G) are required for transferring data to and from medical devices and in addition to their major components developed with improved optimization methods which are substantially needed and embedded in them. Providing intelligent system design is a challenging task in medical applications, as it affects the whole behaviors of medical devices. A critical review of the medical devices and the various optimization methods employed are presented in this paper, to pave the way for designers to develop an apparatus that is applicable in the healthcare industry under 5G technology and future 6G wireless networks.

In this study, we focus on automated optimization design methodologies to concurrently trade off between power gain, output power, efficiency, and linearity specifications in radio frequency (RF) high-power amplifiers (HPAs) through deep neural networks (DNNs). The RF HPAs are highly nonlinear circuits where characterizing an accurate and desired amplitude and phase responses to improve the overall performance is not a straightforward process. For this case, we propose a coarse and fine modeling approach based on firstly modeling the involved transistor and then selecting the best configuration of HAP along with optimizing the involved input and output termination networks through DNNs. In the fine phase, we firstly construct the equivalent modeling of the GaN HEMT transistor by using X-parameters. Then in the coarse phase, we utilize hidden layers of the modeled transistor and replace the HPA’s DNN to model the behavior of the selected HPA by using S-parameters. If the suitable accuracy of HPA modeling is not achieved, the hyperparameters of the fine model are improved and re-evaluated in the HPA model. We call the optimization process coarse and fine modeling since the evaluation process is performed from S-parameters to X-parameters. This stage of optimization can ensure modeling the nonlinear HPA design that includes a high number of parameters in an effective way. Furthermore, for accelerating the optimization process, we use the classification DNN for selecting the best topology of HPA for modeling the most suitable configuration at the coarse phase. The proposed modeling strategy results in relatively highly accurate HPA designs that generate post-layouts automatically, where multi-tone harmonic balance specifications are optimized once together without any human interruptions. To validate the modeling approach and optimization process, a 10 W HPA is simulated and measured in the operational frequency band of 1.8 GHz to 2.2 GHz, i.e., the L-band. The measurement results demonstrate a drain efficiency higher than 54% and linear gain performance more than 12.5 dB, with better than 50 dBc adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) after DPD.

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) is a key technology in the fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks. MEC optimizes communication and computation resources by hosting the application process close to the user equipment (UE) in network edges. The key characteristics of MEC are its ultra-low latency response and real-time applications in emerging 5G networks. However, one of the main challenges in MEC-enabled 5G networks is that MEC servers are distributed within the ultra-dense network. Hence, it is an issue to manage user mobility within ultra-dense MEC coverage, which causes frequent handover. In this study, our purposed algorithms include the handover cost while having optimum offloading decisions. The contribution of this research is to choose optimum parameters in optimization function while considering handover, delay, and energy costs. In this study, it assumed that the upcoming future tasks are unknown and online task offloading (TO) decisions are considered. Generally, two scenarios are considered. In the first one, called the online UE-BS algorithm, the users have both user-side and base station-side (BS) information. Because the BS information is available, it is possible to calculate the optimum BS for offloading and there would be no handover. However, in the second one, called the BS-learning algorithm, the users only have user-side information. This means the users need to learn time and energy costs throughout the observation and select optimum BS based on it. In the results section, we compare our proposed algorithm with recently published literature. Additionally, to evaluate the performance it is compared with the optimum offline solution and two baseline scenarios. The simulation results indicate that the proposed methods outperform the overall system performance.
