Artificial intelligence has become an issue in public policy. Multiple documents issued by public sector actors link artificial intelligence to a wide range of issues, problems or goals and propose corresponding measures and interventions. While there has been substantial research on national and supranational artificial intelligence strategies and regulations, this article is interested in unpacking the processes and priorities of artificial intelligence policy in the making. Conceptually, this article takes a controversy studies lens onto artificial intelligence policy, and complements this with concepts and insights from policy studies. Empirically, we investigate the emergence of German artificial intelligence policy based on content analyses of policy documents and expert interviews. The findings reveal a late, but then powerful institutionalisation of artificial intelligence policy in German federal politics. Artificial intelligence policy in Germany focuses on funding research and supporting industry actors in networked configurations, much more than addressing societal concerns on inequality, discrimination or political economy. With regard to controversies, we observe that German policy is evading controversies by normalising artificial intelligence both with regard to taking artificial intelligence integration in all sectors of society for granted, as well as by accommodating artificial intelligence issues into the routines and institutions of German policy.

La intervención en el patrimonio arquitectónico precisa un estudio previo global que abarque tanto su desarrollo histórico como sus características morfológicas y constructivas, así como su relación con el entorno en que se encuentra. En este trabajo se presenta la metodología empleada para la intervención en la fortificación histórica en tapia de cal y canto de Belver de los Montes, Zamora. La interpretación de las características histórico-constructivas de los restos mediante análisis multidisciplinares permite plantear una forma coherente de abordar las obras de consolidación de un tramo del recinto, que se encuentra en un estado de conservación precario. La metodología desarrollada para este ejemplo concreto podría servir de referencia para futuras intervenciones en elementos de arquitectura fortificada de similares características.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified concerns over bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance, particularly in Romania. This systematic review explores bacterial infection patterns and resistance during the pandemic to address critical gaps in knowledge. Methods: A systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, was conducted using databases such as PubMed and Scopus, focusing on studies of bacterial infections from 2020 to 2022. Articles on bacterial infections in Romanian patients during the pandemic were analyzed for demographic data, bacterial trends, and resistance profiles. Results: A total of 87 studies were included, detailing over 20,000 cases of bacterial infections. The review found that Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, were the most frequently identified pathogens, alongside Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was noted in 24% of the reported strains, with common resistance to carbapenems and cephalosporins. Conclusions: The pandemic has amplified the complexity of managing bacterial infections, particularly in critically ill patients. The rise in MDR bacteria underscores the need for stringent antimicrobial stewardship and infection control measures. Continuous monitoring of bacterial trends and resistance profiles will be essential to improve treatment strategies in post-pandemic healthcare settings.

En el marco de un proyecto de investigación sobre usos históricos y posibilidades actuales de la técnica de bóvedas de ladrillo por hojas, este trabajo estudia los casos de la ciudad de Cáceres, uno de los principales focos peninsulares. A partir de un levantamiento por fotogrametría y escáner láser de 32 bóvedas, se determina forma y aparejo, similitudes o diferencias con otros casos históricos y se deducen aspectos del proceso constructivo, que muestra escaso control material de la forma y un diseño general muy versátil. Además, se establecen nuevas metodologías gráficas de análisis extrapolables a otros casos.

Almost one-third of all malignant melanoma patients exhibit emotional stress indicating the need for professional care. Considering this, patients’ psychological needs are routinely overlooked and unfulfilled, even though there is substantial evidence that psychological therapies may enhance psychosocial outcomes for melanoma patients, such as low mood, sadness, and anxiety. Among developing countries and some health systems in developed regions, the lack of awareness and screening methods for skin cancer creates a high risk of psychological issues associated with more advanced diseases. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate and compare the impact of malignant melanoma awareness for screening, prevention, and treatment on the patient’s quality of life and coping with stress and depression, based on patients’ age. This cross-sectional study recruited 238 patients with malignant melanoma distributed into two groups, Group A patients between 18 and 65 years and Group B patients older than 65. There were no significant gender differences and cancer staging differences between groups, although self-reported depressed mood and anhedonia were significantly more frequent in younger adults with malignant melanoma (43.8% vs. 28.9%). From the unstandardized surveys, it was observed that significantly fewer patients from Group B knew that melanoma could be caused by sun exposure (34.2% vs. 52.2%), and they were less likely to use sunscreen or visit a doctor to evaluate their skin moles (25.9% vs. 14.5%). Elderly patients preferred television as the main source of information, and only 68.4% of patients from Group B were using smart devices. There was a significantly higher physical score on the SF-12 scale among Group A patients, although patients from Group B scored higher in the mental health assessment, and the perceived helplessness on the PSS-10 scale was significantly higher compared to younger adults with melanoma (2.97 vs. 2.71, p-value = 0.036). Lower scores on the physical and mental SF-12 questionnaire determined a higher presence of depressive symptoms (rho = −0.352, respectively rho = −0.273). Higher scores on the DLQI sexual difficulties and treatment difficulties also correlated significantly with the presence of depressive symptoms and anhedonia (rho = 0.341, respectively rho = 0.264). Awareness campaigns for malignant melanoma should focus on the elderly population, too, using the television as the main communication channel. On the other hand, the more informed and knowledgeable group of adults younger than 65 are more likely to experience psychological problems and should be targeted for psycho-oncological aid.

Este artigo elege como cenário de análise a implementação de um projeto de reorganização curricular no ensino médio na rede pública estadual de Minas Gerais que exige dos jovens para quem é endereçada essa política uma reconfiguração dos planos e um novo cálculo para prospectar o futuro, ancorado entre o desejo e a necessidade. Na análise, evidencia-se o quanto o ensino médio voltado aos grupos menos favorecidos tem sido instrumentalizado, a partir de uma semântica ancorada na ideia de “modernização” e “eficiência” da escola, aplicação de lógicas econômicas à pedagogia, o que sugere a transferência da razão do mercado para a escola. A metodologia empreendida combinou as abordagens “qualiquanti”, presentes tanto nos questionários aplicados quanto na realização de grupos focais com os jovens. Para analisar esta realidade factual, utilizou-se um referencial teórico que tem se debruçado sobre os tensionamentos do jovem e o mundo do trabalho.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), in addition to other agents, is part of the TORCH complex (Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex viruses, and other agents). CMV infection is the most frequent cause of congenital malformations. This study aimed to establish the variation of prevalence of anti-CMV antibodies in pregnant women from the South-West region of Romania, according to demographic factors, such as age and area of residence, in two separate time periods (2013–2016 and 2019–2022). We collected from the hospital records the age, place of residence, and anti-CMV antibody test results using immune electrochemiluminescence and chemiluminescence. This study found that the seroprevalence of anti-CMV IgM antibodies increased slightly from 2013–2016 to 2019–2022, from 1.92% to 2.26%, and for IgG antibodies from 93.68% to 94.96%. In both groups was observed a descending trend of anti-CMV IgM seroprevalence with an increase in age, showing a decrease in seroprevalence from 3.57% to 1.09% in pregnant women from rural areas in the 31–35 years age group, while in urban areas, we observed a decrease in seroprevalence from 11.11% to 3.06% in the

Este artigo analisa, através de um estudo de caso, as experiências e as vivências dos professores no ensino médio e os desafios laborais, temporais e afetivos que lhes são impostos no exercício diário da docência. Para tanto, utiliza como aporte teórico autores como Josso (2004), Hargreaves (1998), Huberman (1985) e Goodson (1985), a fim de fundamentar as percepções dos docentes acerca do seu trabalho. A análise aqui apresentada procura contribuir para os estudos sobre os ciclos e fases na carreira docente, ao enfatizar a importância da experiência vital dos professores sobre a sua prática profissional. Assim, o artigo está dividido em duas seções, além da introdução. A primeira seção destaca algumas sínteses biográficas dos professores, tendo como cenário a docência no ensino médio. A segunda seção discute os ciclos da vida profissional dos professores a partir de suas biografias. Por fim, as conclusões procuram captar o sentido do ser e estar professor do Ensino Médio na rede pública estadual de ensino de Minas Gerais.

Background and Objectives: Multidrug-resistant microorganisms have made treating bacterial infections challenging. Resistance to antibiotics is expected to overcome efforts to produce new, effective antibacterial medication that is lifesaving in many situations. Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening infection that affects 5–15 per 100,000 patients annually and requires rapid antibiotic therapy to prevent morbidity and mortality. Materials and Methods: The present research assessed IE cases over five years, from a multicentric database, with the main objective of determining the degree of antibiotic resistance in these patients, stratified by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Results: Bad oral hygiene was present in 58.6% of patients from the Gram-negative group (vs. 38.7% in the Gram-positive group). Non-valvular heart disease was identified in approximately 40% of all patients, and valvopathies in approximately 20%. It was observed that 37.9% of Gram-negative IE bacteria were resistant to three or more antibiotics, whereas 20.7% were susceptible. Among Gram-positive infections, S. aureus was the most commonly involved pathogen, with a multidrug-resistant pattern in 11.2% of patients, while Acinetobacter baumannii had the highest resistance pattern of all Gram-negative pathogens, with 27.4% of all samples resistant to three or more antibiotics. Patients with Gram-negative IE were 4.2 times more likely to die. The mortality risk was 4 times higher when bacteria resistant to two or more antibiotics was involved and 5.7 times higher with resistance patterns to three or more antibiotics than the reference group with no antibiotic resistance. Peripheral catheters were the most common cause of multi-resistant IE, followed by heart surgery, dental procedures, and ENT interventions. Conclusions: Even though Gram-positive infections were the most frequent (83.0% of all cases), Gram-negative IE infections are substantially more deadly than Gram-positive IE infections. However, it was also observed that patients with Gram-negative infections were more likely to have underlying comorbidities, be institutionalized, and be underweight. Although the Gram-negative infections were more severe, their resistance patterns were similar to Gram-positive bacteria. As resistance patterns increase, more efforts should be made to prevent a healthcare catastrophe. At the same time, careful prophylaxis should be considered in patients at risk, including those with central catheters, undergoing dental procedures, and with poor oral hygiene.
