IntroductionSeagrass sediments are important ‘blue carbon’ reservoirs which store climatically significant quantities of organic carbon (Corg) at the global scale. Seagrass meadows that overly these sediments also provide a range of critical ecosystem services including shoreline stabilization, storm surge protection, and fisheries nursery grounds. However, the controls over accumulation and the sources of organic C to these sediments beds are highly variable and poorly understood with the relative importance of hydrodynamic setting, species composition and canopy density being unclear.MethodsHere we address these questions using the first observation-based estimates of Corg stocks and provenance on Turneffe Atoll, Belize, made via remotely-sensed habitat extent, local Corg data and isotopic data. Sedimentary Corg was highest in sediments underlying the most sheltered meadows and decreased with increasing exposure to wind and wave energy with the seagrass meadows in the central lagoon containing an extensive deposit of mangrove derived organic carbon, stabilized and protected by the overlying seagrass meadow.ResultsThe influence of species composition appeared weak with the ubiquitous species T. testudinum occurring across a wide range of hydrodynamic regimes ranging from the most sheltered to the most energetic and being associated with a wide range of sedimentary organic C concentrations. Importantly from the perspective of remote sensing, org C concentrations were unrelated to canopy density. We hypothesize that this decoupling of organic C concentration from seagrass canopy cover reflects a much longer timescale for carbon storage in the sediments than the lifespan of the seagrass plants themselves and/or a substantial non seagrass derived organic C burden in seagrass sediments. Overall, we conservatively estimate that the top 30cm of sediments underlying the seagrass meadows overlying carbonate sediments on the atoll exterior store 0.58 x 106 Mg Corg, most of which is seagrass-derived, whilst the sediments underlying the meadows within the central lagoon store an additional 1.28 x 106 Mg Corg. When the maximum possible extent of seagrass is considered, this estimate increases to 3.54 x 106 Mg Corg. Substantial Corg stocks extending >1m depth were observed across all sites, and so these inventories are considered conservative.DiscussionA preliminary ‘cost of loss’ for sedimentary Corg in the top 30 cm of Turneffe Atoll’s seagrass meadows, based on a carbon trading value of €60 tCO2 (eq), is estimated at €42 million for the outer atoll, increasing to €136 million when the mangrove-derived sediments of the central atoll are considered and €260 million when turbid areas are assumed to contain seagrass.

Abstract The sequestration of organic carbon in seafloor sediments plays a key role in regulating global climate; however, human activities can disturb previously-sequestered carbon stocks, potentially reducing the capacity of the ocean to store CO2. Recent studies revealed profound seafloor impacts and sedimentary carbon loss due to fishing and shipping, yet most other human activities in the ocean have been overlooked. Here, we present an assessment of organic carbon disturbance related to the globally-extensive subsea telecommunications cable network. Up to 2.82–11.26 Mt of organic carbon worldwide has been disturbed as a result of cable burial, in water depths of up to 2000 m. While orders of magnitude lower than that disturbed by bottom fishing, it is a non-trivial amount that is absent from global budgets. Future offshore developments that disturb the seafloor should consider the safeguarding of carbon stocks, across the full spectrum of Blue Economy industries.

Abstract Kemp Caldera, situated in the south of the intra‐oceanic South Sandwich arc, is one of the least explored submarine calderas that hosts hydrothermally active vent sites. The caldera was discovered in 2009. Since then, the focus has been primarily on biological studies. During the R/V Polarstern cruise PS119 in 2019, we gained new insights into the morphology, petrology and the formation of the Kemp Caldera. The ship's multibeam data provide an overview of the caldera bathymetry and backscatter characteristics. The new data revealed that the caldera is nested with two or possibly three concentric calderas. TV‐sled and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) observations provide detailed visual data for the hydrothermally active sites of the vent field at the central resurgent cone and flare site at the NNW caldera rim. The central vent field is dominated by white smokers, where clams, sponges and other fauna thrive, while at the flare site inactive as well as actively venting chimneys have been found. The latter are characterized by metal‐enriched fluids of temperatures ≥200°C. During ROV dives, rock samples were collected from the cone, providing the first information about the Kemp Caldera rock composition. The caldera rocks are dacitic, in contrast to the basalts and andesites of the neighboring Kemp Seamount. This suggests that the dacitic cone was formed by one or more later eruptions of differentiated magma, probably stored in shallow intrusions which are driving hydrothermal activity.

Abstract At the Trans‐Atlantic Geotraverse hydrothermal field, metalliferous sediments cover extinct hydrothermal mounds and the surrounding seafloor. Here, we report the morphological, mineralogical and geochemical processes that deposit these sediments, remobilize their metals, and affect their preservation. We found that the initial sediment metal tenor is controlled by physical transport of hydrothermal material from its source, followed by diagenetic redistribution and potentially diffuse fluid flow after high‐temperature hydrothermal activity has ceased. We distinguished three different environments: (a) proximal metalliferous sediments on top of extinct mounds are mainly derived from oxidative weathering of primary sulfide structures and are predominantly composed of Fe oxyhydroxides with low contents of Cu, Co, and Zn; metal enrichments in specific layers are likely related to upward flow of low‐temperature hydrothermal fluids; (b) medial distant metalliferous sediments found at the base of the mounds, deposited by mass transport, contain cm‐thick layers of unsorted sulfide sands with high base metal contents (e.g., up to 28% Cu); these buried sulfides continue to undergo dissolution, resulting in metal release into porewaters; (c) distal metalliferous sediments, found in depositional basins a few hundreds of meters from the extinct mounds, include fining‐upwards sequences of thin sulfide sand layers with Fe oxyhydroxides and were deposited by recurrent turbiditic flows. Dissolved metals (e.g., Cu2+ and Mn2+) diffuse upwards under reducing conditions and precipitate within the sediment. Hence, when using hydrothermal sediments to construct reliable geochronological records of hydrothermal activity, distance from source, local seafloor morphology, mass‐transport and depositional, and diagenetic modification should all be considered.
