Abstract

We present a new method for identifying the source regions of lightning generated whistlers observed at a fixed location. In addition to the spatial distribution of causative lightning discharges, we calculate the transmission ratio of lightning discharges into ground detectable whistlers as a function of location. Our method relies on the time of the whistlers and the time and source location of spherics from a global lightning database. We apply this method to whistlers recorded at fifteen ground based stations in the AWDANet (Automatic Whistler Detector and Analyzer Network) operating between 2007-2018 and to located lightning strokes from the WWLLN (World Wide Lightning Location Network) database. We present the obtained maps of causative lightning and transmission ratios. Our results show that the source region of whistlers corresponding to each ground station is around the magnetic conjugate point of the respective station. The size of the source region is typically less than 2000 km in radius with a small fraction of sources extending to up to 3500 km. The transmission ratio is maximal at the conjugate point and decreases with increasing distance from it. This conforms to the theory that whistlers detected on the ground propagated in a ducted mode through the plasmasphere and thus the lightning strokes of their causative spherics must cluster around the footprint of the ducts in the other hemisphere. Abstract

In this study we present an inversion method which provides thermal plasma population parameters from characteristics of chorus emissions only. Our ultimate goal is to apply this method to ground based data in order to derive the lower energy boundary condition for many radiation belt models. The first step is to test the chorus-inversion method on in-situ data of Van Allen Probes in the generation region. Density and thermal velocity of energetic electrons (few keV - 100 keV) are derived from frequency sweep rate and starting frequencies of chorus emissions through analysis of wave data from Electric and Magnetic Field Instrument Suite and Integrated Science (EMFISIS) onboard the Van Allen Probes. Nonlinear wave growth theory of \citet{omura2011triggering} serves as the basis for our inversion method, assuming that the triggering wave is originated by the linear cyclotron instability. We present sixteen, consecutive rising-tone emissions recorded in the generation region between 11-12UT on 14 November 2012. The results of the inversion are compared with density and thermal velocities (parallel and perpendicular) of energetic electrons derived from unidirectional flux data of Helium Oxygen Proton Electron (HOPE) instrument, showing a good agreement: the normalized root-mean-square deviation between the measured and predicted values are $\sim13\%, \sim6\%$, and $\sim10\%$, respectively. We found that the theoretical amplitudes are consistent with the measured ones. The relation between linear and nonlinear wave growth agrees with our basic assumption, namely, linear growth is a preceding process of nonlinear wave growth. Abstract

Continuous burst mode VLF measurements were recorded on the RBSP/Van Allen Probes satellites and are analyzed to detect pulses from the Russian Alpha (RSDN-20) ground-based navigational system. Based on the wave characteristics of these pulses and on the position of the spacecraft, the signals propagated mostly in ducted mode in the plasmasphere. Knowledge of the propagation path allowed us to carry out a monochromatic wave propagation inversion to obtain plasmaspheric electron densities. We compared the obtained densities with independent in-situ measurements on the spacecraft. The results show good agreement, validating our inversion process. This contributes to validating the field-aligned density profile model routinely used in the inversion of whistlers detected on the ground. Furthermore, our method can provide electron densities at regimes where no alternative measurements are available on the spacecraft. This raises the possibility of using this method as an additional tool to measure and monitor plasmaspheric electron densities., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Journal of Geophysical Research

Abstract

It is challenging, yet important, to measure the - ever-changing - cold electron density in the plasmasphere. The cold electron density inside and outside of the plasmapause is a key parameter for radiation belt dynamics. One indirect measurement is through finding the velocity dispersion relation exhibited by lightning induced whistlers. The main difficulty of the method comes from low signal-to-noise ratios for most of the ground-based whistler components. To provide accurate electron density and L-shell measurements, whistler components need to be detectable in the noisy background, and their characteristics need to be reliably determined. For this reason precise segmentation is needed on a spectrogram image. Here we present a fully automated way to perform such an image segmentation by leveraging the power of convolutional neural networks, a state-of-the-art method for computer vision tasks. Testing the proposed method against a manually, and semi-manually segmented whistler dataset achieved <10% relative electron density prediction error for 80% of the segmented whistler traces, while for the L-shell, the relative error is <5% for 90% of the cases. By segmenting more than 1 million additional real whistler traces from Rothera station Antarctica, logged over 9 years, seasonal changes in the average electron density were found. The variations match previously published findings, and confirm the capabilities of the image segmentation technique.

Abstract

In the frame of the FP7 POPDAT project the Ionosphere Waves Service (IWS) has been developed and opened for public access by ionosphere experts. IWS is forming a database, derived from archived ionospheric wave records to assist the ionosphere and Space Weather research, and to answer the following questions: How can the data of earlier ionospheric missions be reprocessed with current algorithms to gain more profitable results? How could the scientific community be provided with a new insight on wave processes that take place in the ionosphere? The answer is a specific and unique data mining service accessing a collection of topical catalogs that characterize a huge number of recorded occurrences of Whistler-like Electromagnetic Wave Phenomena, Atmosphere Gravity Waves, and Traveling Ionosphere Disturbances. IWS online service (http://popdat.cbk.waw.pl) offers end users to query optional set of predefined wave phenomena, their detailed characteristics. These were collected by target specific event detection algorithms in selected satellite records during database buildup phase. Result of performed wave processing thus represents useful information on statistical or comparative investigations of wave types, listed in a detailed catalog of ionospheric wave phenomena. The IWS provides wave event characteristics, extracted by specific software systems from data records of the selected satellite missions. The end-user can access targets by making specific searches and use statistical modules within the service in their field of interest. Therefore the IWS opens a new way in ionosphere and Space Weather research. The scientific applications covered by IWS concern beyond Space Weather also other fields like earthquake precursors, ionosphere climatology, geomagnetic storms, troposphere-ionosphere energy transfer, and trans-ionosphere link perturbations.

Abstract

The results of the first 18 months of the PLASMON project are presented. We have extended our three, existing ground-based measuring networks, AWDANet (VLF/whistlers), EMMA/SANSA (ULF/FLRs), and AARDDVARK (VLF/perturbations on transmitters’ signal), by three, eight, and four new stations, respectively. The extended networks will allow us to achieve the four major scientific goals, the automatic retrieval of equatorial electron densities and density profiles of the plasmasphere by whistler inversion, the retrieval of equatorial plasma mass densities by EMMA and SANSA from FLRs, developing a new, data assimilative model of plasmasphere and validating the model predictions through comparison of modeled REP losses with measured data by AARDDVARK network. The first results on each of the four objectives are presented through a case study on a space weather event, a dual storm sudden commencement which occurred on August 3 and 4, 2010.

We present 16 consecutive rising‐tone emissions recorded in the generation region between 11 and 12 UT on 14 November 2012. The results of the inversion are compared with density and thermal velocities (parallel and perpendicular) of energetic electrons derived from the unidirectional flux data of the Helium, Oxygen, Proton, and Electron instrument, showing a good agreement: The normalized root‐mean‐square deviation between the measured and predicted values are less than ∼15%. We found that the theoretical amplitudes are consistent with the measured ones. 31. Natural sources of geomagnetic field variations

Abstract

The Earth’s magnetic field is a dynamic system and varies on a wide spectrum of timescales from microseconds to hundreds of millions of years. The primary source of the field is the self-sustaining geodynamo action of the Earth’s liquid outer core. This creates around 95% of the magnetic field strength at the Earth’s surface. Its average strength at mid-latitudes is on the order of 50,000 nT (ranging between 20,000-60,000 nT increasing toward the poles). The core field varies on timescales of years to millennia. Another internal source is the quasi-stable crustal field, generated by the heterogeneous distribution of ferromagnetic minerals in the upper 5-30 km of the Earth’s surface. Its contribution is much smaller at around 20 nT on average globally, though it can locally be much larger. It changes on timescales of millions of years except at sources such as active volcanic regions or along mid-ocean ridges. There are a number of external (i.e. with sources outside the Earth) field systems which are created by solar-terrestrial interactions. These are much more dynamic and vary on timescales of seconds to days. These have magnitudes of a few pT to 100 nT on geomagnetically quiet days but can change rapidly within minutes to thousands of nT, for example from the impact of an Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection upon the Earth. These effects (geomagnetic storms and substorms) are strongly dependent on local time and latitude, with high latitudes (|Φgeomagnetic| > 60°) being particularly affected from the auroral electrojet current systems or magnetospheric waves. Due to simple geometric reasons (zonal currents), most of the above geomagnetic disturbances appear in the geomagnetic north (also called the horizontal) component. Other magnetic fields are generated locally by instantaneous phenomena such as lightning-generated spherics and magnetospheric whistlers. We will briefly outline the spatio-temporal variation and largest dynamic expected from each source. In this concise review we focus on mid-latitudes (CERN is located at 46.2° geographic latitude, 40.4° geomagnetic latitude, at the footpoint of the L=1.8 magnetic McIlwain-shell) and neglect some of the high-latitude/auroral and equatorial phenomena not relevant for CERN’s location.

Abstract

The full potential of whistlers for monitoring plasmaspheric electron density variations has not yet been realized. The primary reason is the vast human effort required for the analysis of whistler traces. Recently, the first part of a complete whistler analysis procedure was successfully automated, i.e., the automatic detection of whistler traces from the raw broadband VLF signal was achieved. This study describes a new algorithm developed to determine plasmaspheric electron density measurements from whistler traces, based on a Virtual (Whistler) Trace Transformation, using a 2-D fast Fourier transform transformation. This algorithm can be automated and can thus form the final step to complete an Automatic Whistler Detector and Analyzer (AWDA) system. In this second AWDA paper, the practical implementation of the Automatic Whistler Analyzer (AWA) algorithm is discussed and a feasible solution is presented. The practical implementation of the algorithm is able to track the variations of plasmasphere in quasi real time on a PC cluster with 100 CPU cores. The electron densities obtained by the AWA method can be used in investigations such as plasmasphere dynamics, ionosphere-plasmasphere coupling, or in space weather models.
