This article presents the advances of the macro stage of the ongoing Curricular Innovation Project of the undergraduate programs of the Escuela Interamericana de Bibliotecología at the Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia. This project aims to build a curricular proposal that articulates in different dimensions, epistemological-theoretical, pedagogical, didactic, curricular, and administrative, the undergraduate programs in Archiving and Library Science, based on the participation of its key actors, the analysis of the context, and the institutional stamp. Methodologically, tension analysis was used, seeking to make a critical, situated, and historical reading of the theoretical, epistemological, and trend approaches, in order to maintain a balance between labor and social requirements with respect to vocations and institutional traditions. The advances are presented in terms of statements that guide the conception and institutional curricular action, and account for four central issues: the agreements of the articulating and specific objects of study, the identification and analysis of contemporary trends, the definition of graduation profiles, and the configuration of the pedagogical horizon. In the end, some recommendations are put forward to continue encouraging the journey, which can be synthesized into three issues: achieving articulation with the meso and micro curricular stages, advancing in the consolidation of the methodological memory of the project, and proposing administrative alternatives to face curricular innovation processes. In this article we study the professionalization and institutionalization of the Argentine library field during the 1930s and 1940s, with special observation of the participation of the Comisión Protectora de Bibliotecas Populares in this process. With this purpose, we address the advances in formative matters tending to the specialization of the discipline, which were accompanied by a public expansion of discussions and arguments about what the library foundations should be, as well as the conceptual scope that belonged to it. In this framework, we allude to the particular intervention of the Comisión Protectora de Bibliotecas Populares in the construction of public discourse on librarians and librarians and the implementation of specific initiatives by the national entity. Specifically, we analyze the Biblioteca del Bibliotecario and the Congreso Nacional de Bibliotecarios as key milestones to understand the insertion of the institutions, the roles of the agents and the dynamics within an incipient Argentine library field. The article analyses the need for media and information literacy training in a rural library. Information technologies and the dissemination of information in the world are developing much faster than the abilities of their users to use digital technologies, to access and create information and to apply it in various activities. In the rural community, the library is the only information dissemination institution to which media and information literacy education of the population is delegated, therefore it is necessary to identify the population's need for training and detail the directions and methods of training. Many academic libraries rely on a student workforce for everyday operations, interacting with patrons, and assistance with larger projects. Training these students for such multifaceted and customer-service-focused positions can be a challenge. This article traces an overhaul of training procedures made during the transition to a centralized, services desk workflow. All aspects of training a large student workforce, from planning and presentation to assessment, are outlined. Interactive group sessions and peer-to-peer reinforcement of procedures have proven to be most effective in training student workers for varied roles in an academic library. Libraries are vital in providing academic and research resources to the students and faculty working in various universities. The benefits of using e-databases are immense as these resources can be easily accessed anywhere on the educational campus or at home. Therefore, most higher academic universities facilitate e-databases and make them centrally available to their scholars. Conducting periodical training programs on the usage of e-databases is found essential. The study's objectives are to assess the effect of a library training program on the use of centrally subscribed online databases. The researcher has adopted a case study design to implement the study. The samples were the teaching staff, undergraduate (3rd and 4th year BSc students), postgraduate, and Ph.D. scholars. About 300 samples were recruited by using a random stratified sampling technique. The user's data was collected from Koha software. A survey research method was executed to gather information regarding the barriers to not using the various E-databases. A structured questionnaire was administered to collect the problems faced by the non-users of databases. Out of 20 e-databases, most of them were subscribed in the year 2015and 2019. Before piloting the training program, some of the databases were never used. Largely 47 % to 58 % of participants have got into only Turnitin and Scopus databases. Following the training program, about 73 % to 92 % of the participants retrieved Scopus and Turnitin databases for their research activities. From the current study, it is manifestly unspoken that periodical library training programs are crucial to making the fresher aware of the usage and availability of databases in the library. Aim: This paper considers how changes in the research landscape are simultaneously changing the skills needs of library staff, and opening up new opportunities for researchers to pursue careers within libraries. It explores what skills, competencies and knowledge staff with doctoral qualifications can bring to library research support services. Context: Librarians working in research support areas need different skills to the skills academic librarians have traditionally needed. There is currently a gap in the training which those undertaking professional librarianship qualifications receive, in relation to the skills needed for research roles. Simultaneously, expansion in the numbers of PhD students in the UK in recent years has been accompanied by the professionalisation of researcher skills development, equipping students with transferable skills for careers outside, as well as inside, academia. Methodology: This paper compares the skills’ needs of research librarians with the competencies and skills of doctoral graduates, specifically in the UK context (as articulated in the Vitae Researcher Development Framework). It also surveys and discusses the skill-set and qualifications of research support staff employed at three UK research libraries. Results: Understanding the needs and, importantly, the behaviours, of researchers is integral to the provision of a successful library research support service. Many of the skills which are necessary for library graduates to have, are those that are already identified as essential researcher skills. The peer-level support offered by library staff with research backgrounds has a role in developing stronger relationships between the library and the academy.

Librarian was being published from 1952 to 1958, as a bulletin of the Library Center of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Its primary goal was to train librarians and provide information about events and developments in the profession. Beeing the fi rst library journal in Vojvodina it was issued in seven annual sets, with a total of 28 printed volumes. By 1956, the bulletin was published quarterly, while in the last two years it was published semi-annually. The numbering of the volumes was continuous all the time, while the pages were numbered continuously until the end of 1957. By the number 23-24, there were a total of 746 pages of printed text, and the volumes 25-26 and 27-28 count 192 pages. This paper presents the columns and texts that formed the content of Librarian. The issuing of the bulletin can be divided into two periods - the fi rst (1952-1953), during which it contained mostly editorial texts about the formation and organization of libraries, and the second (1954-1958), when the columns were designed and the number of authors of the texts from various fi elds of librarianship was increased. By providing basic information about libraries, especially the rural ones, presenting regulations in the fi elds of cataloguing and classification, organizing departments and services, registration of users and cultural and educational activities in public libraries, Librarian became a necessary source of information in public libraries. By bringing good practice examples and presenting the work of some domestic and foreign libraries, attempts have been made to encourage all libraries to do their best, with existing funds and staff. When it comes to professional library literature - monographs and serial publications - the bulletin was providing information about the eff orts to develop the profession. By presenting book production, it made librarians and users aware of the latest editions, thus contributing to the acquisition of new titles. Purpose - The authors of this chapter, through exploratory survey research, asked several simple questions about what library workers wish they had learned during graduate school and what they would focus on now if they were just beginning their library and information science (LIS) education. Methodology - The authors designed and distributed a simple pilot survey with multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Findings - The survey results identify several key subjects and skills that library professionals wished they had focused more directly on during their Lis education. These included management, technology, pedagogy, and others. The authors suggest collaborating with other departments within the traditional university to deliver these skills so as to prepare future librarians for the dynamic and collaborative settings of modern libraries. This article as part of a more comprehensive study, investigated the level of research and scholarly communication skills of doctoral students and the channels to be adopted by the academic library for the provision of scholarly communication guidance at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). It was ascertained that doctoral students at KNUST had moderate level of skill in research and scholarly communication issues; indicating the need for guidance. Both doctoral students and supervisors acknowledged the need for research and scholarly communication skills guidance and training. The Medical Library and the Department of Research of the Staten Island University Hospital developed a collaborative project aimed at improving research and scholarly productivity in the community teaching hospital setting to meet teaching program accreditation requirements. The project opens a new venue for hospital librarians seeking new and innovative roles within their institutions while helping to strengthen the library’s position and demonstrate the value of library services to health professionals. Makerspaces and accompanying technologies are exciting new services being offered in libraries. However, these come with their own challenges and successes. Training for maker learning locations continues to be difficult to obtain. Inservice librarians rely on peers in the field and online resources for their training. Most preservice librarians are graduating each semester not knowing the skills needed to maintain and serve in makerspaces. As library services continue to change what skill sets are needed to sustain the ever-changing library environment? In this study, 12 interviews were conducted one-on-one with librarians possessing makerspace facilities in their library settings. The interviews were used to gain feedback regarding the makerspace locations in each library. Interviews were digitally audiotaped and transcribed. Results were organized into thematic codes using NVivo 10 qualitative data analysis software. [english] The academic library of “Hochschule für Gesundheit (hsg)”, which was founded to form a branch of academic health professionals within the German health supply system in October 2009 in Bochum, shaped a “library development plan” in the beginning of 2010 as a strategic frame for elaborating the services but also including the hurdles and barriers and therefore reasons for changing some decisions. The plan is permanently communicated to university bodies, protagonist scientists and students. Furthermore an online user satisfaction and interests survey concerning collection, usability, web service and library building was initialized as an additional data fundament. Users also can give personal feedback because of the immediate vicinity to the library. A special services newsletter, which was launched after the survey, subject database analysis for scientists as well as curricular and individual library training courses (information literacy program) also preserve approach to the customers.After initial problems a high-quality collection of still important printed material as textbooks and research books together with e-books and e-Journals was built up. Databases are offered by DBIS and the federative medical search engine Medpilot of the “Zentralbibliothek für Medizin, Köln”. Thus a strategic subject search is possible. By establishing the open source library management system Koha embedded in a resource discovery system (RDS) context the quick access to the up to 40,000 volumes limited print collection plus lots of electronic resources through an integrative user interface is achievable. Library building with furnishing and basic technical devices, library user regulations and workflows are further strategic steps on the way to develop a normal academic library and a special library for the health sciences within the concept of the “Gesundheitscampus Bochum”.[german] Die Bibliothek der im Oktober 2009 gegründeten Hochschule für Gesundheit – hsg – University of Applied Sciences – zur Akademisierung der Gesundheitsberufe hat mit ihrer Einrichtung zu Beginn des Jahres 2010 einen Bibliotheksentwicklungsplan formuliert, an dem entlang die Bibliothek strategisch aufgebaut werden soll, der aber auch Problembereiche benennt und Änderungen begründet. Die Planung wird laufend in Gremien, bei zielprägenden Wissenschaftler/innen und Studierenden vermittelt. Zudem wurde als Datenfundament eine Benutzerumfrage durchgeführt, deren Ergebnisse in die Gestaltung des Bestandes, der Services und der physischen und elektronischen Bibliotheksräume (Bau und Web-Portal) eingeht. Benutzer/innen können durch die derzeit noch gegebene räumliche Nähe in der Bibliothek auch persönlich Feedback geben. Einige Dienstleistungen wie ein Newsletter, eine fachliche Datenbankauswertung für Wissenschaftler/innen und die curricularen wie persönlichen Informationskompetenzangebote (Schulungen) erreichen die Nutzer/innen direkt. Nach einer schwierigen Anfangsphase konnte eine gute Versorgung mit gedruckter Literatur, die in Form von Lehrbüchern und Forschungstiteln nach wie vor sehr wichtig ist, E-Books und E-Journals für die Gesundheitswissenschaften aufgebaut werden. Die Datenbanken können einzeln oder föderiert über DBIS und den Medpilot der Zentralbibliothek für Medizin, Köln, genutzt werden. Damit ist eine gezielte, fundierte Fachrecherche möglich. Mit Aufbau des neuen Bibliothekssystems über das Open-Source-System Koha in einem Discovery-Kontext sollen die nur bis zu einer Größe von 40.000 Bänden ausgelegte Sammlung gedruckter Bestände sowie die mehrheitlich elektronischen Quellen über eine gemeinsame Oberfläche für den orientierenden Erstzugriff zugänglich gemacht werden. Die Diversität der Benutzergruppen (Hochschulangehörige, Kooperationspartner und Externe) erfordern dann einen entsprechenden Zuschnitt der Einstiegsportale entweder über Moodle oder andere Wege. Bibliotheksbau, Erstausstattung, Benutzungsordnung und Workflows sind strategische Themenfelder im Hinblick auf die weitere Entwicklung zur anvisierten Gebrauchsbibliothek für die Hochschule und Spezialbibliothek für die Gesundheitswissenschaften im Kontext des Gesundheitscampus Bochum.

This paper is a case study which will explore the process of working in an academic enrichment curriculum as part of an outreach community program for talented pre-University learners. The program supplements the formal school subjects such as mathematics, science, language, in addition the exposing learners to computer science, forensic science, molecular literacy, information literacy and social research. It will outline the context of the course we offer with the other disciplines. It will discuss the challenges we faced, the lessons learnt, and our aspirations for the future. The overall aim of the program is "to increase the academic, social and psychological preparation of academically talented learners from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds for admission to and success (retention) at South African selective universities." This article will describe a year-long (2010–11) joint project between Columbia University Medical Center's Health Sciences Library and the Institute for Family Health (IFH), a network of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) serving disadvantaged populations in New York State. This National Institutes of Health-funded pilot project aimed to (a) determine the medical literature and training needs of IFH personnel, (b) develop generic licensing agreements with publishers that would enable a health sciences library to provide access to electronic resources for FQHC personnel, and (c) develop reference/education services for IFH personnel. How the reference and education aims were met will be described and discussed here as the lessons learned from this project may be useful to librarians considering doing instructional outreach to unaffiliated health professionals working at FQHCs nationwide. This article describes the implementation of a comprehensive hiring and training program for library work-study students designed to reduce the time spent on individual training. After staff reductions, Marygrove College Library in Detroit, Michigan, turned to an underutilized resource—work-study students. Formerly, training these students took so much permanent staff time that the library questioned investing so much effort on a contingent work force. With the cuts, the library reconsidered the value of work-study employees and devised a hiring and training program to choose the best candidates for the position and to reduce the effort full-time staff spent training new workers. In the Middle East, disaster management planning is not limited to natural calamities but must also consider armed conflict disaster. After the burning of libraries in Iraq, Egypt, and Lebanon since 2003, we must ask in what way do those countries preserve their heritage? What practices do they have in place for times of war? Were these applied when needed? If not, what obstacles prevented their application? This paper presents the findings of a survey of the literature on disaster management for times of war and an analysis of four case studies and argues the importance of prevention and planning. This article presents the findings of an exploratory study of education graduate students’ information-seeking behavior and attitudes. Qualitative data included interviews with education students, focusing on their research habits, and analyzed from phenomenographic approach that focused on variations in individuals’ experiences. The quantitative analysis stemmed from participants’ responses to the survey of their information-seeking behavior. A comparison of interview participants and survey respondents’ search skills, research strategies, and attitudes toward previous library instruction illustrate the wide variation in students’ abilities and experiences between the groups. The University of Oklahoma Libraries recently undertook a project designed to integrate digital library metadata creation into the workflow of the Cataloging Department. This article examines the conditions and factors that led to the project's genesis, the proposed and revised workflows that were developed, the staff training efforts that accompanied implementation of the project, and the results and benefits obtained through the project's implementation. The project presented several challenges but resulted in an improved workflow, greater use of Cataloging Department resources, and more accurate and useful metadata while increasing the Library's capacity to support digitization efforts in a timely fashion. This paper traces library instructional programs available to graduate students in academic institutions in North America from the late 1950s to the present. Three chronological perspectives provide the framework for this analysis. The first includes programs from 1958 to 1989 that offered traditional bibliographic instruction of print resources as well as some online and CD-ROM databases prior to the widespread availability of the Internet. The second considers information literacy instructional efforts in the 1990s that paralleled the rise of the Internet. A library class was designed and offered to new nurses from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of Michigan between 2003 and 2005. The class was intended to increase their knowledge of quality health information, resources and to assist them with their smooth transition to a new health care organization. The goal of the library training class was to develop tile nurses' awareness and knowledge of the library services and online resources on the organization Intranet and to improve their skills in finding reliable information related to patient care, patient parent education, and research. An evaluation study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of the library class. Although the findings demonstrated strengths of the library class, they also revealed some areas for improvement.
