1. Experimental phase function and degree of linear polarization curve of olivine and spinel and the origin of the Barbarian polarization behavior

Abstract: We explore experimentally possible explanations of the polarization curves of the sunlight reflected by the Barbarian asteroids. Their peculiar polarization curves are characterized by a large inversion angle, around 30 degrees, which could be related to the presence of FeO-bearing spinel embedded in Calcium-Aluminum Inclusions. In order to test this hypothesis, we have measured the phase function and degree of linear polarization of six samples of Mg-rich olivine and spinel. For each material, we have analyzed the light scattering properties of a millimeter-sized grain and of two powdered samples with size distributions in the micrometer size range. The three spinel samples show a well-defined negative polarization branch with an inversion phase angle located around 24-30 degrees. In contrast, in the case of the olivine samples, the inversion angle is highly dependent on particle size and tends to decrease for larger sizes. We identify the macroscopic geometries as a possible explanation for the evident differences in the polarization curves between olivine and spinel millimeter samples. Although the polarization behaviour in near backscattering of the Barbara asteroid is similar to that of our spinel mm-sized sample in random orientation, this similarity could result in part from crystal retro-reflection rather than composition. This is part of an ongoing experimental project devoted to test separately several components of CV3-like meteorites, representative of the Barbarians composition, to disentangle their contributions to the polarization behavior of these objects.

2. Subsolar Al/Si and Mg/Si ratios of non-carbonaceous chondrites reveal planetesimal formation during early condensation in the protoplanetary disk

Abstract: The Al/Si and Mg/Si ratios in non-carbonaceous chondrites are lower than the solar (i.e., CI-chondritic) values, in sharp contrast to the non-CI carbonaceous meteorites and the Earth, which are enriched in refractory elements and have Mg/Si ratios that are solar or larger. We show that the formation of a first generation of planetesimals during the condensation of refractory elements implies the subsequent formation of residual condensates with strongly sub-solar Al/Si and Mg/Si ratios. The mixing of residual condensates with different amounts of material with solar refractory/Si element ratios explains the Al/Si and Mg/Si values of non-carbonaceous chondrites. To match quantitatively the observed ratios, we find that the first-planetesimals should have accreted when the disk temperature was ~1,330-1,400 K depending on pressure and assuming a solar C/O ratio of the disk. We discuss how this model relates to our current understanding of disk evolution, grain dynamics, and planetesimal formation. We also extend the discussion to moderately volatile elements (e.g., Na), explaining how it may be possible that the depletion of these elements in non-carbonaceous chondrites is correlated with the depletion of refractory elements (e.g., Al). Extending the analysis to Cr, we find evidence for a higher than solar C/O ratio in the protosolar disk's gas when/where condensation from a fractionated gas occurred. Finally, we discuss the possibility that the supra-solar Al/Si and Mg/Si ratios of the Earth are due to the accretion of ~40% of the mass of our planet from the first-generation of refractory-rich planetesimals., Comment: Accepted for publication in EPSL

3. Rapid temperature changes and the early activity on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Abstract: The so-called "early activity" of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has been observed to originate mostly in parts of the concave region or "neck" between its two lobes. Since activity is driven by the sublimation of volatiles, this is a puzzling result because this area is less exposed to the Sun and is therefore expected to be cooler on average (Sierks et al. 2015). We used a thermophysical model that takes into account thermal inertia, global self-heating, and shadowing, to compute surface temperatures of the comet. We found that, for every rotation in the August--December 2014 period, some parts of the neck region undergo the fastest temperature variations of the comet's surface precisely because they are shadowed by their surrounding terrains. Our work suggests that these fast temperature changes are correlated to the early activity of the comet, and we put forward the hypothesis that erosion related to thermal cracking is operating at a high rate on the neck region due to these rapid temperature variations. This may explain why the neck contains some ice --as opposed to most other parts of the surface (Capaccioni et al. 2015)-- and why it is the main source of the comet's early activity (Sierks et al. 2015). Abstract: The search for rocky exoplanets plays an important role in our quest for extra-terrestrial life. Here, we discuss the extreme physical properties possible for the first characterized rocky super-Earth, CoRoT-7b (R_pl = 1.58 \pm 0.10 R_Earth, Mpl = 6.9 \pm 1.2 M_Earth). It is extremely close to its star (a = 0.0171 AU = 4.48 R_st), with its spin and orbital rotation likely synchronized. The comparison of its location in the (Mpl, Rpl) plane with the predictions of planetary models for different compositions points to an Earth-like composition, even if the error bars of the measured quantities and the partial degeneracy of the models prevent a definitive conclusion. The proximity to its star provides an additional constraint on the model. It implies a high extreme-UV flux and particle wind, and the corresponding efficient erosion of the planetary atmosphere especially for volatile species including water. Consequently, we make the working hypothesis that the planet is rocky with no volatiles in its atmosphere, and derive the physical properties that result. As a consequence, the atmosphere is made of rocky vapours with a very low pressure (P \leq 1.5 Pa), no cloud can be sustained, and no thermalisation of the planetary is expected. The dayside is very hot (2474 \leq 71 K at the sub-stellar point) while the nightside is very cold (50 to 75 K). The sub-stellar point is as hot as the tungsten filament of an incandescent bulb, resulting in the melting and distillation of silicate rocks and the formation of a lava ocean. These possible features of CoRoT-7b could be common to many small and hot planets, including the recently discovered Kepler-10b. They define a new class of objects that we propose to name "Lava-ocean planets".

Abstract: Active asteroids are those that show evidence of ongoing mass loss. We report repeated instances of particle ejection from the surface of (101955) Bennu, demonstrating that it is an active asteroid. The ejection events were imaged by the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Securityâ€“Regolith Explorer) spacecraft. For the three largest observed events, we estimated the ejected particle velocities and sizes, event times, source regions, and energies. We also determined the trajectories and photometric properties of several gravitationally bound particles that orbited temporarily in the Bennu environment. We consider multiple hypotheses for the mechanisms that lead to particle ejection for the largest events, including rotational disruption, electrostatic lofting, ice sublimation, phyllosilicate dehydration, meteoroid impacts, thermal stress fracturing, and secondary impacts.

Abstract: Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles).

Abstract: Recent astronomical observations and theoretical modeling led to a consensus regarding the global scenario of the formation of young stellar objects (YSO) from a cold molecular cloud of interstellar dust (organics and minerals) and gas that, in some cases, leads to the formation of a planetary system. In the case of our Solar System, which has already evolved for approximately 4567 Ma, the quest is to access, through the investigation of planets, moons, cometary and asteroidal bodies, meteorites, micrometeorites, and interplanetary dust particles, the primitive material that contains the key information about the early Solar System processes and its evolution. However, laboratory analyses of extraterrestrial samples, astronomical observations and dynamical models of the Solar System evolution have not brought yet any conclusive evidence on the nature and location of primitive matter in the Solar System, preventing a clear understanding of its early stages.

Abstract: NASA selected the OSIRIS-REx Asteroid Sample Return Mission as the third New Frontiers mission in May 2011 [I]. The mission name is an acronym that captures the scientific objectives: Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer. OSIRIS-REx will characterize near-Earth asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36, which is both the most accessible carbonaceous asteroid [2,3] and one of the most potentially hazardous asteroids known [4]. The primary objective of the mission is to return a pristine sample from this bod, to advance our understanding of the generation, evolution, and maturation of regolith on small bodies.

Abstract: During its approach to asteroid (101955) Bennu, NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft surveyed Bennu's immediate environment, photometric properties, and rotation state. Discovery of a dusty environment, a natural satellite, or unexpected asteroid characteristics would have had consequences for the mission's safety and observation strategy. Here we show that spacecraft observations during this period were highly sensitive to satellites (sub-meter scale) but reveal none, although later navigational images indicate that further investigation is needed. We constrain average dust production in September 2018 from Bennu's surface to an upper limit of 150 g s-1 averaged over 34 min. Bennu's disk-integrated photometric phase function validates measurements from the pre-encounter astronomical campaign. We demonstrate that Bennu's rotation rate is accelerating continuously at 3.63 ± 0.52 × 10-6 degrees day-2, likely due to the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect, with evolutionary implications.

Abstract: Given the great diversity of chondrules, laboratory experiments are invaluable in yielding information on chondrule formation process(es) and for deciphering their initial conditions of formation together with their thermal history. In addition, they provide some critical parameters for astrophysical models of the solar system and of nebular disk evolution in particular (partial pressures, temperature, time, opacity, etc). Most of the experiments simulating chondrules have assumed formation from an aggregate of solid grains, with total pressure of no importance and with virtually no gain or loss of elements from or to the ambient environment. They used pressed pellets attached to wires and suffered from some losses of alkalis and Fe.

Abstract: Fine grained rims (FGR) are commonly encountered around chondrules and CAI’s in CV carbonaceouschondrites. They are mostly composed by very fine grained (mi- cron to submicron) iron rich olivine.Whether the iron rich olivines are of nebular or parent body origin stays a matter of debate ([1],[2], [3]).While chemical and petrographic characterizations are abundant in the literature, only few studies concerningmicrotextures and fabrics of these fine grained olivines are available [4], [5], [6]. Recent EBSD study in Allende has stirred up the debate, since a spherical fabricaround chondrules has been discovered, supporting a nebular origin [5]. In order to further investigate the relationship between chondrules and fine grained rims,we present here EBSD and AFM analyses in Vigarano CV3 chondrite.

46. Revealing the Early Cooling Histories of Type 1A Chondrules using Diffusion Chronometry.

Abstract: Chondrules, ancient sub-millimeter spherules of ferromagnesian silicates, Fe metals, and sulfides formed in the protoplanetary disk are one of the primary composents of most chondrite meteorites. Chemically, the most abundant chondrules are Mg-rich (Type 1). Olivine-rich (Type 1A) chondrules are further subdivided by the morphology of the olivine grains into barred olivine chondrules (BO), which have parallel lath-shaped crystals as viewed in section, and porphyritic olivine chondrules (PO), which have compact polyhedral crystals. Here we investigate the cause of this morphological difference in pursuit of a broader understanding of chondrule formation conditions. A first hypothesis holds that morphological differences are attributed to variable extents of melting of precursor dustballs. Incomplete melting would leave crystalline seeds on which olivine could regrow as polyhedral crystals at relatively low thermodynamic undercooling. In contrast, dustballs that underwent higher degrees of melting would lose all substrates and unaided homogeneous nucleation and rapid growth would produce barred olivine [2,3]. This explanation posits a dramatically different thermal history for the BO and PO chondrule types. A second hypothesis involves differences in nucleation and growth rates, but no difference in thermal history. Rather it is the availability (or lack) of metal blebs acting as olivine nucleation sites, that controls the growth regime [4]. In this view, PO forms in melt droplets that happen to contain metal blebs; BO forms in droplets without. A key difference between these two proposed formation scenarios is the inferred thermal history. We thus frame a testable null hypothesis: BO and PO chondrules have indistinguishable thermal histories. Rejection of this hypothesis, i.e., by finding resolvable differences in the thermal histories of BO and PO samples, specifically such that BO cooled faster than PO, would be evidence in support of the "partially molten dustball" idea. In constrast, indistinguishable thermal histories of the BO and PO types would be consistent with the "metal bleb" idea. The cathodoluminescence (CL) signatures in these olivine grains were previously shown to correlate with Al content [4]. This correlation provides a means to finding chemical heterogeneities suitable for diffusion chronometry, a technique to determine diffusive timescales from assumed initial conditions through numerical solutions to Fick's second law. Electron microprobe analyses of BO and PO chondrules in two CO chondrites (Yamato 81020 and Acfer 094) reveal heterogeneities of Al, Ti, Mn, Cr, and Ca that are all in different states of diffusive relaxation. These systems provide multiple independent measures of diffusive timescales that we leverage to obtain the cooling histories of these two classes of chondrules. 47. OXYGEN ISOTOPIC COMPOSITIONS OF MINERALS IN CHONDRITIC AND ACHONDRITIC LITHOLOGIES OF THE CB CARBONACEOUS CHONDRITE SIERRA GORDA 013.

Abstract: Introduction: The CB metal-rich carbonaceous chondrites show large variations in Fe,Ni-metal abundances (40-80 vol%), chondrule sizes and textures, and are subdivided into two subgroups - CBa and CBb. The CBa chondrites consist of cm-sized Fe,Ni-metal±sulfide nodules and Mg-nonporphyritic chondrules having skeletal olivine (SO) and cryptocrystalline (CC) textures. The CBb chondrites are finer-grained, and in addition to the CBa-like components, contain chemically-zoned and unzoned Fe,Ni-metal grains and rare Ca,Al-rich inclusions, porphyritic chondrules, and hydrated chondritic clasts [2-6]. The SO and CC chondrules in both subgroups have a very limited range of -17O, -2.2±0.7‰ (2SD) and are interpreted to have formed in an impact-generated gas-melt plume 4562.52±0.44 Ma [5-7]. The observed range of major elemental compositions of these chondrules was reproduced by equilibrium condensation from a spatially heterogeneous impact plume that sampled different proportions of differentiated planetesimals composed of Fe,Ni-metal core, Ca,Al-poor mantle, and Ca,Al-rich crust enriched in later accreted water [8]. Trace element abundances recorded chemical evidence for igneous differentiation of the CB chondrule precursors and for evaporation and recondensation of chondrule melts in the CB plume [9]. The metal-rich carbonaceous chondrite Sierra Gorda (SG) 013 is a recently classified anomalous CBa meteorite that consists of two texturally distinct lithologies - chondritic and primitive achondritic [10]. Here we report on the mineralogy, petrography, and O-isotope compositions of individual minerals in both lithologies measured with the UH Cameca ims-1280 SIMS. Mineralogy and Petrography: The chondritic lithology is composed of Fe,Ni-metal nodules (~ 80 vol%) up to 0.9 mm in size, and Mg-chondrules/clasts having barred olivine (BO), SO, and porphyritic (PO, PP, POP) textures; daubréelite, schreibersite, and Cr-spinel are minor. Most chondrules contain Cr-spinel that occurs as euhedral grains and as symplectitic intergrowths with high-Ca and low-Ca pyroxenes. The peripheral parts of SO, BO, and PO chondrules are enriched in low-Ca pyroxene and tiny Cr-spinel grains, indicative of gas-melt interaction while freely flowing in space. The achondritic lithology contains a lower abundance of Fe,Ni-metal nodules, ~25 vol%, which are evenly distributed between coarse-grained olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, and Cr-spinel, and interstitial high-Ca pyroxene and anorthitic plagioclase. Both lithologies have similar compositions of olivine (Fa~3, 0.25±0.14 wt% Cr2O3), low-Ca and high-Ca pyroxenes (Fs3.5±0.2Wo1.4±0.2, ~1 wt% Cr2O3 & Fs~2Wo~45, ~1.2 wt% Cr2O3), Cr-spinel (in wt%, ~14, Al2O3; 6, FeO; 18, MgO; 60, Cr2O3), and plagioclase/mesostasis (An96Ab4) [10]. Oxygen isotopic compositions: On a three-isotope oxygen diagram, -17O vs. -18O, compositions of olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, and Cr-spinel in SG 013 chondrules plot along the Primitive Chondrule Mineral (PCM) line [11] and have nearly identical (within uncertainties of our SIMS measurements) -17O values: -2.4±0.5‰ (2SD, n=34), -2.1±0.5‰ (n=27), and -2.3±0.4‰ (n=5), respectively. O-isotope compositions of the SG 013 chondrules are similar to those of Mg-non-porphyritic chondrules in CBa and CBb chondrites suggesting formation in a similar gaseous reservoir, most likely an impact plume. In achondritic lithology, O-isotope compositions of olivine and low-Ca pyroxene (-17O = -2.6±0.5‰, n=11 and -2.4±0.5‰, n=11, respectively) are similar to those in the chondritic lithology. We conclude that (i) the Mg-non-porphyritic and porphyritic chondrules in SG 013 formed in the CB impact plume resulted from a collision between planetesimals. (ii) High fraction of porphyritic chondrules in SG 013 compared to those in typical CBs reflects variations in thermal history in different plume regions. (iii) The similar O-isotope compositions of the texturally distinct SG 013 lithologies suggest they formed from the isotopically similar precursors but experienced different formation histories. The achondritic lithology formed by thermal annealing and recrystallization of a metal-rich chondritic precursor, probably on one of the colliding bodies. Chondrules in the chondritic lithology formed from melt-droplets ejected into an impact plume followed by gas-melt interaction. Physical modeling of impact plume evolution and measurements of bulk Cr and Ti isotopic compositions of CBa and CBb chondrites, and both lithologies of SG 013 will provide additional constraints on their genetic relationship.
