Phonons in Bose-Einstein condensates propagate as massless scalar particles on top of an emergent acoustic metric. This hydrodynamics/gravity analogy can be exploited to realize acoustic black holes, featuring an event horizon that traps phonons. We show that by appropriately perturbing the background fluid, gravitational wave-like fluctuations of the acoustic metric can be produced. Such fluctuations can be used to excite an acoustic black hole, which should then relax by phonon emission.

In a series of recent papers we put forward a ``fractional gravity'' framework striking an intermediate course between a modified gravity theory and an exotic dark matter (DM) scenario, which envisages the DM component in virialized halos to feel a non-local interaction mediated by gravity. The remarkable success of this model in reproducing several aspects of DM phenomenology motivates us to look for a general relativistic extension. Specifically, we propose a theory, dubbed Relativistic Scalar Fractional Gravity or RSFG, in which the trace of the DM stress-energy tensor couples to the scalar curvature via a non-local operator constructed with a fractional power of the d'Alembertian. We derive the field equations starting from an action principle, and then we investigate their weak field limit, demonstrating that in the Newtonian approximation the fractional gravity setup of our previous works is recovered. We compute the first-order post-Newtonian parameter $\gamma$ and its relation with weak lensing, showing that although in RSFG the former deviates from its GR values of unity, the latter is unaffected. We also perform a standard scalar-vector-tensor-decomposition of RSFG in the weak field limit, to highlight that gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light, though also an additional scalar mode becomes dynamical. Finally, we derive the modified conservation laws of the DM stress energy tensor in RSFG, showing that a new non-local force emerges, and hence that the DM fluid deviates from the geodesic solutions of the field equations., Comment: 21 pages. This investigation delves into the ringdown signals produced by semiclassical stars, which are ultra-compact, regular solutions of the Einstein equations incorporating stress-energy contributions from quantum vacuum polarization. These stars exhibit an approximately Schwarzschild exterior and an interior composed of a constant-density classical fluid and a cloud of vacuum polarization. By adjusting their compactness and density, we can alter the internal structure of these stars without modifying the exterior. This adaptability enables us to examine the sensitivity of the ringdown signal to the innermost regions of the emitting object and to compare it with similar geometries that differ substantially only at the core. Our results indicate that echo signals are intrinsically linked to the presence of stable light rings and can be very sensitive to the internal structure of the emitting object. This point was previously overlooked, either due to the imposition of reflective boundary conditions at the stellar surface or due to the assumption of low curvature interior geometries. Specifically, for stellar-sized semiclassical stars, we find that the interior travel time is sufficiently prolonged to render the echoes effectively unobservable. These findings underscore the potential efficacy of ultra-compact objects as black hole mimickers and emphasize that any phenomenological constraints on such objects necessitate a detailed understanding of their specific properties and core structure.

Analogue Hawking radiation from acoustic horizons is now a well-established phenomenon, both theoretically and experimentally. Its persistence, despite the modified dispersion relations characterising analogue models, has been crucial in advancing our understanding of the robustness of this phenomenon against ultraviolet modifications of our spacetime description. However, previous theoretical approaches, such as the Bogoliubov transformation relating asymptotic states, have somewhat lacked a straightforward physical intuition regarding the origin of this robustness and its limits of applicability. To address this, we revisit analogue Hawking radiation using the tunneling method. We present a unified treatment that allows us to consider flows with and without acoustic horizons and with superluminal or subluminal dispersion relations. While the standard point of view is that the ultimate endpoint of black hole evolution is determined by Hawking evaporation, there is a growing evidence that classical and semi-classical instabilities affect both black holes with inner horizons as well as their ultra-compact counterparts. In this essay we start from this evidence pointing towards extremal black holes as stable endpoints of the gravitational collapse, and develop a general class of spherical and axisymmetric solutions with multiple extremal horizons. This work introduces a novel prescription for the expression of the thermodynamic potentials associated with the couplings of a Lanczos-Lovelock theory. These potentials emerge in theories with multiple couplings, where the ratio between them provide intrinsic length scales that break scale invariance. Our prescription, derived from the covariant phase space formalism, differs from previous approaches by enabling the construction of finite potentials without reference to any background. To do so, we consistently work with finite-size systems with Dirichlet boundary conditions and rigorously take into account boundary and corner terms: including these terms is found to be crucial for relaxing the integrability conditions for phase space quantities that were required in previous works. We apply this prescription to the first law of (extended) thermodynamics for stationary black holes, and derive a version of the Smarr formula that holds for static black holes with arbitrary asymptotic behaviour., Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures; references added, minor rephrasing

Singularity theorems demonstrate the inevitable breakdown of the concept of continuous, classical spacetime under highly general conditions. Quantum gravity is expected to intervene to avoid singularities and models so far hint towards several regularized geometries, in which limited spacetime regions requiring full quantum gravitational description can be safely covered by an extension of some suitable spacetime geometry. Motivated by these premises, in recent years, a systematic, quantum gravity agnostic, study has been carried out to catalogue all the conceivable non-singular, continuous, and globally hyperbolic geometries arising from evading Penrose's focusing theorem in gravitational collapse. In this study, we extend this inquiry by systematically examining all potential non-singular, continuous, and globally hyperbolic extensions into the past of Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics. As in the black hole case, our investigation reveals a remarkably limited set of alternative scenarios. The stringent requisites of homogeneity and isotropy drastically restrict the viable singularity-free geometries to merely three discernible non-singular cosmological spacetimes: a bouncing universe (where the scale factor reaches a minimum in the past before re-expanding), an emergent universe (where the scale factor reaches and maintains a constant value in the past), and an asymptotically emergent universe (where the scale factor diminishes continually, asymptotically approaching a constant value in the past). We also discuss the implications of these findings for the initial conditions of our universe, and the arrow of time.

Mass inflation is a well established instability, conventionally associated to Cauchy horizons (which are also inner trapping horizons) of stationary geometries, leading to a divergent exponential buildup of energy. We show here that finite (but often large) exponential buildups of energy are generically present for dynamical geometries endowed with slowly-evolving inner trapping horizons, even in the absence of Cauchy horizons. This provides a more general definition of mass inflation based on quasi-local concepts. We also show that various known results in the literature are recovered in the limit in which the inner trapping horizon asymptotically approaches a Cauchy horizon. Our results imply that black hole geometries with non-extremal inner horizons, including the Kerr geometry in general relativity, and non-extremal regular black holes in theories beyond general relativity, can describe dynamical transients but not the long-lived endpoint of gravitational collapse., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

While non-rotating black-hole solutions are well known in Einstein--\ae{}ther gravity, no axisymmetric solutions endowed with Killing horizons have been so far found outside of the slowly rotating limit. Here we show that the Kerr spacetime is also an exact vacuum solution of Einstein--\ae{}ther gravity in a phenomenologically viable corner of the parameter space; the corresponding \ae{}ther flow is characterised by a vanishing expansion. Such solution displays all the characteristic features of the Kerr metric (inner and outer horizons, ergoregion, etc.) with the remarkable exception of the causality-violating region in proximity of the ring singularity. However, due to the associated \ae{}ther flow, it is endowed with a special surface, inside the Killing horizon, which exhibits many features normally related to the universal horizon of the non-rotating solutions -- to which it tends in the limit of zero angular momentum. Hence, these Kerr black holes are very good mimickers of their general relativity counterparts while sporting important differences and specific structures. We study gravitational and test-field perturbations for the two possible families of spherically symmetric black-hole mimickers that smoothly interpolate between regular black holes and horizonless compact objects accordingly to the value of a regularization parameter. One family can be described by the Bardeen-like metrics, and the other by the Simpson-Visser metric. We compute the spectrum of quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of these spacetimes enlightening a common misunderstanding regarding this computation present in the recent literature. In both families, we observe long-living modes for values of the regularization parameter corresponding to ultracompact, horizonless configurations. Such modes appear to be associated with the presence of a stable photon sphere and are indicative of potential non-linear instabilities. In general, the QNM spectra of both families display deviations from the standard spectrum of GR singular BHs. In order to address the future detectability of such deviations in the gravitational-wave ringdown signal, we perform a preliminary study, finding that third generation ground-based detectors might be sensible to macroscopic values of the regularization parameter.

A well-defined variational principle for gravitational actions typically requires to cancel boundary terms produced by the variation of the bulk action with a suitable set of boundary counterterms. This can be achieved by carefully balancing the coefficients multiplying the bulk operators with those multiplying the boundary ones. A typical example of this construction is the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary action that needs to be added to the Einstein-Hilbert one in order to have a well-defined metric variation for General Relativity with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Quantum fluctuations of matter fields lead to the renormalization of said coefficients which may or may not preserve this balance. Indeed, already at the level of General Relativity, the resilience of the matching between bulk and boundary constants is far from obvious and it is anyway incomplete given that matter generically induces quadratic curvature operators. We investigate here the resilience of the matching of higher-order couplings upon renormalization by a non-minimally coupled scalar field and show that a problem is present. Even though we do not completely solve the latter, we show that it can be greatly ameliorated by a wise splitting between dynamical and topological contributions. Doing so, we find that the bulk-boundary matching is preserved up to a universal term, whose nature and possible cancellation we shall discuss in the end., Comment: 27 pages

Infrared observations of Sgr A$^*$ and M87$^*$ are incompatible with the assumption that these sources have physical surfaces in thermal equilibrium with their accreting environments. In this paper we discuss a general parametrization of the energy balance in a horizonless object, which permits to quantify how close a horizonless object is in its behavior to a black hole, and analyze the timescale in which its surface can thermalize. We show that the thermalization timescale is unbounded, growing large for objects that mimic closely the behavior of a black hole (and being infinite for the latter). In particular, the thermalization timescale is proportional to the time that energy spends inside the horizonless object due to propagation and interactions with the bulk. Hence, these observations can be used to quantitatively restrict the dynamical behavior of horizonless objects, without being able to discard the existence of a physical surface., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures

We look for possible evidence of a non-minimal coupling (NMC) between dark matter (DM) and gravity using data from the X-COP compilation of galaxy clusters. We consider a theoretically motivated NMC that may dynamically arise from the collective behavior of the coarse-grained DM field (e.g., via Bose-Einstein condensation) with averaging/coherence length $\L_{\mathrm{nmc}}$. In the Newtonian limit, the NMC modifies the Poisson equation by a term $\L_{\mathrm{nmc}}^2 \nabla^2 \rho$ proportional to the Laplacian of the DM density itself. We show that this term when acting as a perturbation over the standard Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile of cold DM particles, can yield DM halo density profiles capable of correctly fitting galaxy clusters' pressure profiles with an accuracy comparable and in some cases even better than the standard cold DM NFW profile. We also show that the observed relation between the non-minimal coupling length scale and the virial mass found in Gandolfi et al., 2022 for Late Type Galaxies is consistent with the relation we find in the current work, suggesting that the previously determined power-law scaling law holds up to galaxy cluster mass scales., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Penrose's singularity theorem implies that if a trapped region forms in a gravitational collapse, then a singularity must form as well within such region. However, it is widely expected that singularities should be generically avoided by quantum gravitational effects. Here we shall explore both the minimum requirements to avoid singularities in a gravitational collapse as well as discuss, without relying on a specific quantum gravity model, the possible regular spacetimes associated to such regularization of the spacetime fabric. In particular, we shall expose the intimate and quite subtle relationship between regular black holes, black bounces and their corresponding horizonless object limits. In doing so, we shall devote specific attention to those critical (extremal) black hole configurations lying at the boundary between horizonful and horizonless geometries. While these studies are carried out in stationary configurations, the presence of generic instabilities strongly suggest the need for considering more realistic time-dependent dynamical spacetimes. Missing specific dynamical models, much less rigorous statements can be made for evolving geometries. There is growing evidence that Ho\v{r}ava gravity may be a viable quantum theory of gravity. It is thus legitimate to expect that gravitational collapse in the full, non-projectable version of the theory should result in geometries that are free of spacetime singularities. Previous analyses have shown that such geometries must belong to one of the following classes: simply connected regular black holes with inner horizons; non-connected black holes "hiding" a wormhole mouth (black bounces); simply connected or non-connected horizonless compact objects. Here, we consider a singular black hole in the low-energy limit of non-projectable Ho\v{r}ava gravity, i.e. khronometric theory, and describe examples of its possible "regularisations", covering all of the viable classes. To our knowledge, these examples constitute the first instances of black holes with inner universal horizons, of black bounces and of stars with a de Sitter core in the context of Lorentz-violating theories of gravity., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures. Regular black holes are generically unstable because of the classical phenomenon that goes by the name of "mass inflation" which destabilizes the inner horizon. In a recent article, [Phys.Rev.D~107~(2023)~2,~024005], it is argued that semiclassical effects due to Hawking radiation can cure this instability, and some concerns are raised against the validity of previous analyses showing its existence in the first place. We illustrate that regular black holes and horizonless stars, typically considered as quite distinct families of black hole mimickers, are intimately intertwined. We show that any spherically symmetric regular black hole can be continuously deformed into a horizonless star under the mild conditions of non-negativity of gravitational energy (Misner--Sharp quasi-local mass), and an assumed linear relation between the latter and the Arnowitt--Deser--Misner (ADM) mass. We illustrate this general result by considering the family of geometries proposed by Hayward as the description of regular black holes, and we also describe the properties of the corresponding horizonless stars. The form of the associated effective stress-energy tensor shows that these horizonless stars can be identified as anisotropic gravastars with a soft surface and inner/outer light rings. We also construct dynamical geometries that could describe the evolution of regular black holes towards horizonless stars, and show that semiclassical physics contains the necessary ingredients to trigger the early stages of such dynamical evolution., Comment: 29 pages with references, 6 figures

We discuss the tension between the possible existence of Painleve-Gullstrand coordinate systems versus the explicit geometrical features of the Kerr spacetime; a subject of interest to Professor Thanu Padmanabhan in the weeks immediately preceding his unexpected death. We shall carefully distinguish strong and weak Painleve-Gullstrand coordinate systems, and conformal variants thereof, cataloguing what we know can and cannot be done -- sometimes we can make explicit global statements, sometimes we must resort to implicit local statements. For the Kerr spacetime the best that seems to be achievable is to set the lapse function to unity and represent the spatial slices with a 3-metric in factorized unimodular form; this arises from considering the Doran version of Kerr spacetime in Cartesian coordinates. We finish by exploring the (limited) extent to which this construction might possibly lead to implementing an "analogue spacetime" model suitable for laboratory simulations of the Kerr spacetime., Comment: 22 pages. We consider possible perturbations of the black hole event horizon induced by matter with spin, extending the derivation of the Hawking-Hartle formula (tidal heating) in the presence of torsion. When specialised to theories with a non-vanishing (pseudo-)traceless component of the (con)torsion tensor, we remarkably find that the tidal heating phenomenon gets modified by additional torsion-dependent terms, in agreement with previous investigations based on Jacobson's spacetime thermodynamics approach. These results lead to relevant phenomenological and theoretical consequences: modifications in the Hawking-Hartle term change the Bondi mass associated with the gravitational radiation observed at infinity, and modify the Hawking radiation spectrum of evaporating black holes.

Understanding the quantum nature of spacetime and gravity remains one of the most ambitious goals of theoretical physics. It promises to provide key new insights into fundamental particle theory, astrophysics, cosmology and the foundations of physics. Despite this common goal, the community of quantum gravity researchers is sometimes seen as divided into sub-communities working on different, mutually exclusive approaches. In practice however, recent years have shown the emergence of common techniques, results and physical ideas arising from different sub-communities, suggesting exciting new prospects for collaboration and interaction between traditionally distinct approaches. We present a rotating regular black hole whose inner horizon has zero surface gravity for any value of the spin parameter, and is therefore stable against mass inflation. Our metric is built by combining two successful strategies for regularizing singularities, i.e. by replacing the mass parameter with a function of $r$ and by introducing a conformal factor. The mass function controls the properties of the inner horizon, whose displacement away from the Kerr geometry's inner horizon is quantified in terms of a parameter $e$; while the conformal factor regularizes the singularity in a way that is parametrized by the dimensionful quantity $b$. The resulting line element not only avoids the stability issues that are common to regular black hole models endowed with inner horizons, but is also free of problematic properties of the Kerr geometry, such as the existence of closed timelike curves. While the proposed metric has all the phenomenological relevant features of singular rotating black holes -- such as ergospheres, light ring and innermost stable circular orbit -- showing a remarkable similarity to a Kerr black hole in its exterior, it allows nonetheless sizable deviations, especially for large values of the spin parameter $a$. In this sense, the proposed rotating "inner-degenarate" regular black hole solution is not only amenable to further theoretical investigations but most of all can represent a viable geometry to contrast to the Kerr one in future phenomenological tests., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. The possible detection of echoes in late gravitational-wave signals is the most promising way to test horizonless alternatives to general relativistic black holes, and probe the physics of these hypothetical ultra-compact objects. While there is currently no evidence for the presence of such signatures, better accuracy is expected with the growing wealth of data from gravitational waves observatories. So far, several searches for these specific signals have been performed considering equidistant intervals between consecutive echoes, i.e. quasi-periodic wave-forms, and ignoring possible backreaction effects of the incoming waves. Here we study scalar perturbations in exotic compact object scenarios that account for possible backreaction phenomena. In particular, we find that if one considers the increase of the central object mass due to the partial absorption of the energy carried by the perturbation, the echo signal can be quite different and non-periodic. Apart from this simple scenario, we also consider the case in which, in order to preserve its compactness above the black hole limit, the compact object absorption shuts down in a finite amount of time or leads to an expansion. Generic models of regular black holes have separate outer and inner horizons, both with nonzero surface gravity. It has been shown that a nonzero inner horizon surface gravity results in exponential instability at the inner horizon controlled by this parameter. This phenomenon takes the name of "mass inflation instability", and its presence has put in question the physical viability of regular black holes as alternatives to their (singular) general relativity counterparts. In this paper, we show that it is possible to make the inner horizon surface gravity vanish, while maintaining the separation between horizons, and a non-zero outer horizon surface gravity. We construct specific geometries satisfying these requirements, and analyze their behavior under different kinds of perturbations, showing that the exponential growth characteristic of mass inflation instability is not present for these geometries. These "inner-extremal" regular black holes are thereby better behaved than singular black holes and generic regular black holes, thus providing a well-motivated alternative of interest for fundamental and phenomenological studies., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

The images of Sagittarius A$^*$ recently released by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration have been accompanied [Ap.J.Lett.\,{\bf 930\,\#2}\,(2022)\,L17] by an analysis of the constraints on the possible absence of a trapping horizon, i.e.~on the possibility that the object at the center of our galaxy is an ultra-compact object with a surface re-emitting incident radiation. Indeed, using the observed image size and the broadband spectrum of Sgr A$^*$, it is claimed that the radius of any such thermal surface is strongly bounded from above by these latest observations. Herein, we discuss how the reported constraint relies on the extremely strong assumption of perfect balance in the energy exchange between the accretion disk and the central object, and show that this is violated whenever the surface is endowed with any non-zero absorption coefficient. We discuss in detail the upper-bound constraints that can be cast on the radius and dimensionless absorption coefficient of the surface. We show that the conclusions of the analysis presented by the EHT collaboration hold only for unnaturally small values of the absorption coefficient (i.e. much lower than $10^{-14}$), and thus have to be significantly revised in scenarios with physical significance., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Regular black holes represent a conservative model in which the classical singularity is replaced by a non-singular core without necessarily modifying the spacetime outside the trapping horizon. Given the possible lack of phenomenological signatures, it is crucial to study the consistency of the model. We show that such a term, when acting as a perturbation over the standard Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile of cold DM particles, can substantially alter the dynamical properties of galaxies, in terms of their total radial acceleration within the disk and rotation velocity. Specifically, we find that this NMC model can properly fit the stacked rotation curves of local spiral galaxies with different velocities at the optical radius, including dwarfs and low-surface brightness systems, at a level of precision comparable to, and in some instances even better than, the phenomenological Burkert profile. Finally we show that, extrapolating down to smaller masses the scaling of $L$ vs. halo mass found from the above rotation curve analysis, the NMC model can adequately reproduce the radial acceleration relation (or RAR) in shape and normalization down to the dwarf spheroidal galaxy range, a task which constitutes a serious challenge for alternative DM models even inclusive of baryonic effects., Comment: 39 pages, 22 figures. We discuss particle production in spacetimes endowed with a universal horizon in Einstein--Aether and Horava gravity. We argue that continuity and differentiability of the lapse function require the orientation of the foliation in the interior of the horizon to be reversed with respect to the exterior one. Unless this is allowed, interaction of gravitating scalar fields with the universal horizon leads to unitarity violations in the quantum theory. This property is responsible for particle production by the universal horizon, as we show by computing explicitly its Hawking temperature for all stationary and spherically symmetric spacetimes. We study scalar test-field perturbations on top of a Kerr--black-bounce background, i.e. a family of rotating regular black holes and/or rotating traversable wormholes that can mimic Kerr black holes. We compute the quasi-normal modes for a massless field in both the regular black holes and wormhole branches, confirming the stability of the former and identifying a set of growing modes that renders the latter unstable. We present a systematic study of the geometric structure of non-singular spacetimes describing black holes in Lorentz-violating gravity. We start with a review of the definition of trapping horizons, and the associated notions of trapped and marginally trapped surfaces, and then study their significance in frameworks with modified dispersion relations. This leads us to introduce the notion of universally marginally trapped surfaces, as the direct generalization of marginally trapped surfaces for frameworks with infinite signal velocities (Ho\v{r}ava-like frameworks), which then allows us to define universal trapping horizons. We find that trapped surfaces cannot be generalized in the same way, and discuss in detail why this does not prevent using universal trapping horizons to define black holes in Ho\v{r}ava-like frameworks. We then explore the interplay between the kinematical part of Penrose's singularity theorem, which implies the existence of incomplete null geodesics in the presence of a focusing point, and the existence of multiple different metrics. This allows us to present a complete classification of all possible geometries that neither display incomplete physical trajectories nor curvature singularities. Our main result is that not all classes that exist in frameworks in which all signal velocities are realized in Ho\v{r}ava-like frameworks. The Raychaudhuri equations for the expansion, shear and vorticity are generalized in a spacetime with torsion for timelike as well as null congruences. These equations are purely geometrical like the original Raychaudhuri equations and could be reduced to them when there is no torsion. Using the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble field equations the effective stress-energy tensor is derived. We also consider an Oppenheimer-Snyder model for the gravitational collapse of dust. It is shown that the null energy condition (NEC) is violated before the density of the collapsing dust reaches the Planck density, hinting that the spacetime singularity may be avoided if there is a non-zero torsion,i.e. if the collapsing dust particles possess intrinsic spin.

Classical black holes shield us from the singularities that inevitably appear in general relativity. Being singularity regularization one of the main landmarks for a successful theory of quantum gravity, quantum black holes are not obliged to hide their inner core from the outside world. Notwithstanding the aforesaid, it is often implicitly assumed that quantum gravity effects must remain confined to black hole interiors. In this essay we argue in the opposite direction, discussing theoretical evidence for the existence of strong correlations between the physics inside and outside non-singular black holes. The possibility that rotating black holes could be natural particle accelerators has been subject of intense debate. While it appears that for extremal Kerr black holes arbitrarily high center of mass energies could be achieved, several works pointed out that both theoretical as well as astrophysical arguments would severely dampen the attainable energies. In this work we study particle collisions near Kerr black holes, by reviewing and extending the so far proposed scenarios. Most noticeably, we shall focus on the recently advanced target particle scenarios which were claimed to reach arbitrarily high energies even for Schwarzschild black holes. By implementing the hoop conjecture we show that these scenarios involving near-horizon target particles are in principle able to attain, sub-Planckian, but still ultra-high center of mass energies of the order of $10^{23}-10^{25}$ eV even for non-extremal Kerr black holes. Furthermore, analysing the properties of particles produced in such collisions, we find that photons can escape to infinity. However, their energy is only of the order of the energy of the colliding particles and hence relatively low, which is the same conclusion previously reached in the literature about the original Ba\~nados--Silk--West process. Ongoing observations in the strong-field regime are in optimal agreement with general relativity, although current errors still leave room for small deviations from Einstein's theory. Here we summarise our recent results on superradiance of scalar and electromagnetic test fields in Kerr-like spacetimes, focusing mainly on the Konoplya--Zhidenko metric. We observe that, while for large deformations with respect to the Kerr case superradiance is suppressed, it can be nonetheless enhanced for small deformations. Given the recent development of rotating black-bounce-Kerr spacetimes, for both theoretical and observational purposes it becomes interesting to see whether it might be possible to construct black-bounce variants of the entire Kerr-Newman family. Specifically, herein we shall consider black-bounce-Reissner-Nordstr\"om and black-bounce-Kerr-Newman spacetimes as particularly simple and clean everywhere-regular black hole "mimickers" that deviate from the Kerr-Newman family in a precisely controlled and minimal manner, and smoothly interpolate between regular black holes and traversable wormholes. While observationally the electric charges on astrophysical black holes are likely to be extremely low, $|Q|/m \ll 1$, introducing any non-zero electric charge has a significant theoretical impact. We investigate self-gravitating equilibria of halos constituted by dark matter (DM) non-minimally coupled to gravity. In particular, we consider a theoretically motivated non-minimal coupling which may arise when the averaging/coherence length $L$ associated to the fluid description of the DM collective behavior is comparable to the local curvature scale. In the Newtonian limit, such a non-minimal coupling amounts to a modification of the Poisson equation by a term $L^2\,\nabla^2\rho$ proportional to the Laplacian of the DM density $\rho$ itself. We further adopt a general power-law equation of state $p\propto \rho^{\Gamma}\, r^\alpha$ relating the DM dynamical pressure $p$ to density $\rho$ and radius $r$, as expected by phase-space density stratification during the gravitational assembly of halos in a cosmological context. We confirm previous findings that, in absence of the non-minimal coupling, the resulting density $\rho(r)$ features a steep central cusp and an overall shape mirroring the outcomes of $N-$body simulations in the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, as described by the classic NFW or Einasto profiles. Most importantly, we find that the non-minimal coupling causes the density distribution to develop an inner core and a shape closely following, out to several core scale radii, the Burkert profile. In fact, we highlight that the resulting mass distributions can fit, with an accuracy comparable to the Burkert's one, the co-added rotation curves of dwarf, DM-dominated galaxies. Finally, we show that non-minimally coupled DM halos are consistent with the observed scaling relation between the core radius $r_0$ and core density $\rho_0$, in terms of an universal core surface density $\rho_0\times r_0$ among different galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures. Recent strong-field regime tests of gravity are so far in agreement with general relativity. In particular, astrophysical black holes appear all to be consistent with the Kerr spacetime, but the statistical error on current observations allows for small yet detectable deviations from this description. Here we study superradiance of scalar and electromagnetic test fields around the Kerr-like Konoplya--Zhidenko black hole and we observe that for large values of the deformation parameter superradiance is highly suppressed with respect to the Kerr case. Surprisingly, there exists a range of small values of the deformation parameter for which the maximum amplification factor is larger than the Kerr one. The recent opening of gravitational wave astronomy has shifted the debate about black hole mimickers from a purely theoretical arena to a phenomenological one. In this respect, missing a definitive quantum gravity theory, the possibility to have simple, meta-geometries describing in a compact way alternative phenomenologically viable scenarios is potentially very appealing. A recently proposed metric by Simpson and Visser is exactly an example of such meta-geometry describing, for different values of a single parameter, different non-rotating black hole mimickers. Here, we employ the Newman--Janis procedure to construct a rotating generalisation of such geometry. We obtain a stationary, axially symmetric metric that depends on mass, spin and an additional real parameter $\ell$. According to the value of such parameter, the metric may represent a rotating traversable wormhole, a rotating regular black hole with one or two horizons, or three more limiting cases. By studying the internal and external rich structure of such solutions, we show that the obtained metric describes a family of interesting and simple regular geometries providing viable Kerr black hole mimickers for future phenomenological studies., Comment: 20+ pages, lots of pictures. Regular black holes with nonsingular cores have been considered in several approaches to quantum gravity, and as agnostic frameworks to address the singularity problem and Hawking's information paradox. While in a recent work we argued that the inner core is destabilized by linear perturbations, opposite claims were raised that regular black holes have in fact stable cores. To reconcile these arguments, we discuss a generalization of the geometrical framework, originally applied to Reissner--Nordtsr\"om black holes by Ori, and show that regular black holes have an exponentially growing Misner--Sharp mass at the inner horizon. This result can be taken as an indication that stable nonsingular black hole spacetimes are not the definitive endpoint of a quantum gravity regularization mechanism, and that nonperturbative backreaction effects must be taken into account in order to provide a consistent description of the quantum-gravitational endpoint of gravitational stellar collapse., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. Horava gravity breaks Lorentz symmetry by introducing a dynamical timelike scalar field (the khronon), which can be used as a preferred time coordinate (thus selecting a preferred space-time foliation). Adopting the khronon as the time coordinate, the theory is invariant only under time reparametrizations and spatial diffeomorphisms. In the infrared limit, this theory is sometimes referred to as khronometric theory. Here, we explicitly construct a generalization of khronometric theory, which avoids the propagation of Ostrogradski modes as a result of a suitable degeneracy condition (although stability of the latter under radiative corrections remains an open question). While this new theory does not have a general-relativistic limit and does not yield a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker-like cosmology on large scales, it still passes, for suitable choices of its coupling constants, local tests on Earth and in the solar system, as well as gravitational-wave tests. The persistence of a suitable notion of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity is not only a non-trivial consistency test for such theories, it is also an interesting investigation {\em per se}, as it might help us identifying the crucial features at the root of these surprising laws governing such purely gravitational objects. In past investigations, controversial findings were presented in this sense. With the aim of settling this issue, we present here two complementary derivations of Hawking radiation in geometries endowed with universal horizons: a novel feature of back holes in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity which reproduces several properties normally characterizing Killing horizons. We find that both the derivations agree on the fact that the Hawking temperature associated to these geometries is set by the generalized universal horizon peeling surface gravity, as required for consistency with extant derivations of the first law of thermodynamics for these black holes. We shall also comment on the compatibility of our results with previous alternative derivations and on their significance for the survival of the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

We study the back-reaction associated with Hawking evaporation of an acoustic canonical analogue black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the emission of Hawking radiation induces a local back-reaction on the condensate, perturbing it in the near-horizon region, and a global back-reaction in the density distribution of the atoms. We investigate the causal hierarchy in various modified theories of gravity. In general relativity the standard causal hierarchy, (key elements of which are chronology, causality, strong causality, stable causality, and global hyperbolicity), is well-established. In modified theories of gravity there is typically considerable extra structure, (such as: multiple metrics, aether fields, modified dispersion relations, Horava-like gravity, parabolic propagation, etcetera), requiring a reassessment and rephrasing of the usual causal hierarchy. We shall show that in this extended framework suitable causal hierarchies can indeed be established, and discuss the implications for the interplay between "superluminal" propagation and causality. The key distinguishing feature is whether the signal velocity is finite or infinite. Preserving even minimal notions of causality in the presence of infinite signal velocity requires the aether field to be both unique and hypersurface orthogonal, leading us to introduce the notion of global parabolicity., Comment: 30 pages

The interest in the implications that astrophysical observations have for the understanding of the structure of black holes has grown since the first detection of gravitational waves. Many arguments that are put forward in order to constraint alternative black hole models rely on substantial assumptions such as perfect spherical symmetry, which implies absence of rotation. However, given that astrophysical black holes will generally exhibit nonzero angular momentum, realistic constraints must take into account the effects of rotation. In this work we analyze the gravitational effect that rotation has on the emission from the surface of ultracompact objects, by studying how angular momentum affects the propagation of light rays. This allows us to evaluate the reliability of the constraints derived for supermassive black holes (more specifically, Sagittarius A* and M87*) assuming lack of rotation, as presented in [Astrophys. J. 701, 1357 (2009); Astrophys. J. 805, 179 (2015)]. We find that for rapidly spinning objects rotation can significantly affect the escaping probability of photon emitted from the surface of the object, with a significant increase at the equatorial regions and a decrease at the poles with respect to the non-rotating case. For not so rapidly spinning black hole candidates like Sagittarius A*, such modifications do not affect significantly the present constraints, which are nevertheless weaker than originally supposed due to the relativistic lensing here considered and additional phenomenological parameters that describe basic processes such as absorption. The 1965 Penrose singularity theorem demonstrates the utterly inevitable and unavoidable formation of spacetime singularities under physically reasonable assumptions, and it remains one of the main results in our understanding of black holes. It is standard lore that quantum gravitational effects will always tame these singularities in black hole interiors. However, the Penrose's theorem provides no clue as to the possible (non-singular) geometries that may be realized in theories beyond general relativity as the result of singularity regularization. In this paper we analyze this problem in spherically symmetric situations, being completely general otherwise, in particular regarding the dynamics of the gravitational and matter fields. Our main result is that, contrary to what one might expect, the set of regular geometries that arises is remarkably limited. We rederive geometries that have been analyzed before, but also uncover some new possibilities. Moreover, the complete catalogue of possibilities that we obtain allows us to draw the novel conclusion that there is a clear tradeoff between internal and external consistency: One has to choose between models that display internal inconsistencies, or models that include significant deviations with respect to general relativity, which should therefore be amenable to observational tests via multi-messenger astrophysics., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures

We study the phenomenology associated to non-minimally coupled dark matter. In particular, we consider the model where the non-minimal coupling arises from the formation of relativistic Bose-Einstein condensates in high density regions of dark matter [1]. This non-minimal coupling is of Horndeski type and leads to a local modification of the speed of gravity with respect to the speed of light. Therefore we can constrain the model by using the joint detection of GW170817 and GRB170817A. Unless the reality of spacetime singularities is assumed, astrophysical black holes cannot be identical to their mathematical counterparts obtained as solutions of the Einstein field equations. Mechanisms for singularity regularization would spark deviations with respect to the predictions of general relativity, although these deviations are generally presumed to be negligible for all practical purposes. Nonetheless, the strength and nature of these deviations remain open questions, given the present uncertainties about the dynamics of quantum gravity. We present here a geometric classification of all spherically symmetric spacetimes that could result from singularity regularization, using a kinematic construction that is both exhaustive and oblivious to the dynamics of the fields involved. Due to the minimal geometric assumptions behind it, this classification encompasses virtually all modified gravity theories, and any theory of quantum gravity in which an effective description in terms of an effective metric is available. The first noteworthy conclusion of our analysis is that the number of independent classes of geometries that can be constructed is remarkably limited, with no more than a handful of qualitatively different possibilities. But our most surprising result is that this catalogue of possibilities clearly demonstrates that the degree of internal consistency and the strength of deviations with respect to general relativity are strongly, and positively, correlated. Hence, either quantum fluctuations of spacetime come to the rescue and solve these internal consistency issues, or singularity regularization will percolate to macroscopic (near-horizon) scales, radically changing our understanding of black holes and opening new opportunities to test quantum gravity., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Analogue gravity can be used to reproduce the phenomenology of quantum field theory in curved spacetime and in particular phenomena such as cosmological particle creation and Hawking radiation. In black hole physics, taking into account the backreaction of such effects on the metric requires an extension to semiclassical gravity and leads to an apparent inconsistency in the theory: the black hole evaporation induces a breakdown of the unitary quantum evolution leading to the so called information loss problem. Here we show that analogue gravity can provide an interesting perspective on the resolution of this problem, albeit the backreaction in analogue systems is not described by semiclassical Einstein equations. In particular, by looking at the simpler problem of cosmological particle creation, we show, in the context of Bose--Einstein condensates analogue gravity, that the emerging analogue geometry and quasi-particles have correlations due to the quantum nature of the atomic degrees of freedom underlying the emergent spacetime. The quantum evolution is, of course, always unitary, but on the whole Hilbert space, which cannot be exactly factorised a posteriori in geometry and quasi-particle components. In analogy, in a black hole evaporation one should expect a continuous process creating correlations between the Hawking quanta and the microscopic quantum degrees of freedom of spacetime, implying so that only a full quantum gravity treatment would be able to resolve the information loss problem by proving the unitary evolution on the full Hilbert space., Comment: 35 pages

We analyze Hawking radiation as perceived by a freely-falling observer and try to draw an inference about the region of origin of the Hawking quanta. To do so, first we calculate the energy density from the stress energy tensor, as perceived by a freely-falling observer. Then we compare this with the energy density computed from an effective temperature functional which depends on the state of the observer. The two ways of computing these quantities show a mismatch at the light ring outside the black hole horizon. To better understand this ambiguity, we show that even taking into account the (minor) breakdown of the adiabatic evolution of the temperature functional which has a peak in the same region of the mismatch, is not enough to remove it. We argue that the appearance of this discrepancy can be traced back to the process of particle creation by showing how the Wentzel--Kramers--Brillouin approximation for the field modes breaks down between the light ring at $3M$ and $4M$, with a peak at $r=3.3M$ exactly where the energy density mismatch is maximized. We hence conclude that these facts strongly support a scenario where the Hawking flux does originate from a "quantum atmosphere" located well outside the black hole horizon.

We confront the predicted gyroscopic precession (in particular the geodetic precession) from metric $f(R)$ theory with the data provided by the mission, Gravity Probe--B. We find the constraint, $|a_2| < 1.33\times 10^{12} \mathrm{m}^2$, where $a_2$ is the coefficient assessing the strength of the lowest order correction to the Einstein--Hilbert action for a metric $f(R)$ theory with $f$ analytic. This constraint improves over astrophysical bounds provided by massive black holes and planetary precession which are $|a_2|\gtrsim 10^{17} \mathrm{m}^2$ and $|a_2|\lesssim 1.2\times10^{18} \mathrm{m}^2$ respectively and it is complementary to the stringent ones provided by lab based experiments, like the E\"ot--Wash experiment. We also investigate the modification of our result for gyroscopic precession if the oblateness of Earth is taken into account by considering the quadrupole moment of Earth.
