With the development of energy storage technology, the new energy storage materials are more diverse. The sodium metal has the advantages of high energy density, rich resource reserves, and low costs for raw materials, becoming promising advanced energy storage materials for application. However, the low tensile strength of sodium metal makes it difficult to process deformation while its severe viscosity and low melting point affect the subsequent manufactory and application of batteries. These characteristics hinder the processing and preparation of thin‐sodium metal. The designs of composite‐supporting structure, alloying, and the interface strengthening for sodium metal can effectively overcome the difficulties in preparation of the thin sodium. In this review, the design principles of thin sodium in terms of processing and preparation, according to the physical and chemical properties of sodium metal, are discussed. Meanwhile, the key challenges and new development opportunities are addressed for the processing and preparation of the thin‐sodium metal, which is beneficial for deeply understanding the reliable fabrication and realizing the practical application of thin‐sodium metals.

Highlights The robust organic/inorganic hybrid interlayer derived from in situ formed tribofilms were fabricated by using a scalable rolling method. The interlayer facilitates dendrite-free lithium metal anodes by building local de-solvation environments near the interface and inhibiting both dendrite growth and electrolytes corrosion. The symmetrical cell exhibits a remarkable lifespan of 5,600 h (1.0 mA cm-2 and 1.0 mAh cm-2) and 1,350 cycles even at a harsh condition (18.0 mA cm-2 and 3.0 mAh cm-2).

Abstract A practical high-specific-energy Li metal battery requires thin (≤20 μm) and free-standing Li metal anodes, but the low melting point and strong diffusion creep of lithium metal impede their scalable processing towards thin-thickness and free-standing architecture. In this paper, thin (5 to 50 μm) and free-standing lithium strips were achieved by mechanical rolling, which is determined by the in situ tribochemical reaction between lithium and zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP). A friction-induced organic/inorganic hybrid interface (~450 nm) was formed on Li with an ultra-high hardness (0.84 GPa) and Young’s modulus (25.90 GPa), which not only enables the scalable process mechanics of thin lithium strips but also facilitates dendrite-free lithium metal anodes by inhibiting dendrite growth. The rolled lithium anode exhibits a prolonged cycle lifespan and high-rate cycle stability (in excess of more than 1700 cycles even at 18.0 mA cm−2 and 1.5 mA cm−2 at 25 °C). Meanwhile, the LiFePO4 (with single-sided load 10 mg/cm2) ||Li@ZDDP full cell can last over 350 cycles with a high-capacity retention of 82% after the formation cycles at 5 C (1 C = 170 mA/g) and 25 °C. This work provides a scalable approach concerning tribology design for producing practical thin free-standing lithium metal anodes.

Constructing three-dimensional (3D) current collectors is an effective strategy to solve the hindrance of the development of lithium metal anodes (LMAs). However, the excessive mass of the metallic scaffold structure leads to a decrease in energy density. Herein, lithiophilic graphene aerogels comprising reduced graphene oxide aerogels and silver nanowires (rGO-AgNW) are synthesized through chemical reduction and freeze-drying techniques. The rGO aerogels with large specific surface areas effectively mitigate local current density and delay the formation of lithium dendrites, and the lithiophilic silver nanowires can provide sites for the uniform deposition of lithium. The rGO-AgNW/Li symmetric cell presents a stable cycle of about 2000 h at 1 mA cm−2. When coupled with the LiFePO4 cathode, the assembled full cells exhibit outstanding cycle stability and rate performance. Lightweight rGO-AgNW aerogels, as the host for lithium metal, can significantly improve the energy density of lithium metal anodes.

ABSTRACTObjectives To explore the application of third-generation sequencing (TGS) for genetic diagnosis and prenatal genetic screening of thalassemia genes.Methods Two groups of subjects were enrolled in this study. The first group included 176 subjects with positive hematological phenotypes for thalassemia. Thalassemia-associated genes were detected simultaneously in each sample using both the PacBio TGS platform based on single-molecule real-time (SMRT) technology and the conventional PCR-reverse dot blot (PCR-RDB). Sanger sequencing was used for validation when results were discordant between the two methods. The second group included 53 couples with at least one partner having a positive thalassemia hematological phenotype, and they were screened for homotypic thalassemia variants by TGS, and the risk of pregnancies with babies presenting with severe thalassemia, was assessed.Results Of the 176 subjects, 175 had concordant genotypes between the two methods, including 63 normal subjects and 112 α- and/or β-thalassemia gene carriers, with a concordance rate of 99.43%. TGS detected a rare β-thalassemia gene variant −50 (G > A) that was not detected by conventional PCR-RDB. TGS identified seven of the 53 couples as homotypic thalassemia gene carriers, five of whom were at risk of pregnancies with severe thalassemia.Conclusion TGS could effectively detect common and rare thalassemia variants with high accuracy and efficiency. This approach would be suitable for prenatal thalassemia genetic screening in areas with high incidence of thalassemia.

Routine PCR, Sanger sequencing, and specially designed GAP-PCR are often used in the genetic analysis of thalassemia, but all these methods have limitations. In this study, we evaluated a new third-generation sequencing-based approach termed comprehensive analysis of thalassemia alleles (CATSA) in subjects with no variants identified by routine PCR, Sanger sequencing, and specially designed GAP-PCR. Hemoglobin testing and routine PCR tests for 23 common variants were performed for 3,033 subjects. Then, Sanger sequencing and specially designed GAP-PCR were performed for a subject with no variants identified by routine PCR, no iron deficiency, and positive hemoglobin testing. Finally, the new CATSA method was conducted for the subjects with no variants identified by Sanger sequencing and specially designed GAP-PCR. In the 49 subjects tested by CATSA, eight subjects had variants identified. Sanger sequencing and independent PCR confirmed the CATSA result. In addition, it is the first time that Hb Lepore was identified in Hunan Province. In total, traditional methods identified variants in 759 of the 3,033 subjects, while CATSA identified additional variants in eight subjects. CATSA showed great advantages compared to the other genetic testing methods.

Abstract The uncontrollable dendrite growth and complex interfacial reactions are still challenging issues hindering the practical applications of lithium (Li) metal anode. A variety of materials are widely studied to regulate the surface properties of Li metal anode except for the lithiophobic materials. This study shows that a double lithiophobic sandwich structure can induce uniform Li deposition to suppress Li dendrite growth at the nucleating stage. A hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) particle layer on Cu foil (h‐BN@Cu) is prepared as the research target to intensely explore the fundamental role of the lithiophobic h‐BN layer on the diffusion and nucleation behavior of Li on the Cu surface. The h‐BN layer makes the h‐BN@Cu interface possess lower adsorption energy and more substantial charge transfer, leading to the “h‐BN‐Li‐Cu” sandwich deposition mode. Theoretical calculations, in situ monitoring, and experimental tests confirm the relevance between uniform Li deposition and the h‐BN@Cu interface structure. The h‐BN@Cu anode enables a significantly improved lifespan (over 550 h) compared to the Cu anode and enhanced cycling stability when assembled in whole cells with LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode. This discovery provides a new insight into h‐BN and other lithiophobic materials as a protective layer to improve the Li deposition behavior.

Enteric viruses, as a potential pathogen, have been found to be vital causes of economic losses in poultry industry worldwide. The enteric viruses widely studied to date mainly include avian nephritis virus (ANV), avian reovirus (ARe), chicken astrovirus (CAstV), chicken parvovirus (ChPV), fowl adenovirus group I (FAdV-1), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), and avian rotavirus (ARoV). This paper aimed to identify single and multiple infections of the seven enteric viruses using the data obtained from positive 145 enteric virus samples in poultry flocks from different areas in Hebei Province, throughout the period from 2019 to 2021. Next, the correlation between bird age and clinical signs was investigated using PCR and RT-PCR techniques. Furthermore, the whole genomes of seven parvovirus strains and open reading frame 2 (ORF2) of six CAstV strains and eight ANV strains were sequenced for phylogenetic analysis and recombination analysis, to characterize the viruses and evaluate species correlation and geographic patterns. A total of 11 profiles of virus combinations were detected; 191 viruses were detected in 145 samples; 106 single infections were reported in 73.1% of the samples; and multiple infections were detected in the remaining 26.9%. For viruses, 69% of ChPV was correlated with single infection, while ANV (61.4%) and CAstV (56.1%) were correlated with multiple infections. However, IBV and ARe were not detected in any of the samples. Recombination events were reported in parvovirus, and all CAstV sequences investigated in this paper were included within genotype Bii. The eight ANV strains pertained to different subtypes with significant differences. The above results revealed for the first time the complexity of enteric viruses over the past several years, thus contributing to disease prevention and control in the future.

Cathode materials have impeded the development of aqueous Zn batteries (AZBs) for a long time due to their low capacity and poor cycling stability. Here, a “two birds with one stone” strategy is devised to optimize the Ni–Co hydroxide cathode material (NCH) for AZBs, which plays an essential role in both composition adjustment and morphology majorization. The F-doped Ni–Co hydroxide (FNCH) exhibits a unique nanoarray structure consisting of the 2D flake-like unit, furnishing abundant active sites for the redox reaction. A series of analyses prove that FNCH delivers improved electrical conductivity and enhanced electrochemical activity. Contributing to the unique morphology and adjusted characteristics, FNCH presents a higher discharge-specific capacity, more advantageous rate capability and competitive cycling stability than NCH. As a result, an aqueous Zn battery assembled with a FNCH cathode and Zn anode exhibits a high capacity of 0.23 mAh cm−2 at 1 mA cm−2, and retains 0.10 mAh cm−2 at 10 mA cm−2. More importantly, the FNCH–Zn battery demonstrates no capacity decay after 3000 cycles with a conspicuous capacity of 0.15 mAh cm−2 at 8 mA cm−2, indicating a superior cycling performance. This work provides a facile approach to develop high-performance cathodes for aqueous Zn batteries.

Lithium-boron (Li-B) alloys play an important role in the fields of thermal batteries and Li metal batteries, where the electrochemical performance is highly dependent on microstructure homogeneity and the Li content. In this study, computed tomography (CT) scanning has been firstly used to study the elemental content and spatial distribution of Li in a Li-B alloy. For a commercial Li-B alloy, quantitative relationships between the CT values, [Hu], and the weight percent of Li, wT−Li, and the density, ρLi−B, that is, [Hu] =13563.836.2×wT-Li-2.8-1,016.2 and [Hu] = 790.1 × ρLi−B − 1, 016.2, respectively. The experimental data were found to be in good agreement with current theory. The CT scanning method was non-destructive, and proved to be fast, highly accurate, and low-cost for the characterization of Li-B alloy ingots in terms of elemental composition, density, and uniformity.

Abstract High energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising next‐generation energy storage devices. However, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and huge volume change limit their practical applications. Here, a new Mg doped Li–LiB alloy with in situ formed lithiophilic 3D LiB skeleton (hereinafter called Li–B–Mg composite) is presented to suppress Li dendrite and mitigate volume change. The LiB skeleton exhibits superior lithiophilic and conductive characteristics, which contributes to the reduction of the local current density and homogenization of incoming Li+ flux. With the introduction of Mg, the composite achieves an ultralong lithium deposition/dissolution lifespan (500 h, at 0.5 mA cm−2) without short circuit in the symmetrical battery. In addition, the electrochemical performance is superior in full batteries assembled with LiCoO2 cathode and the manufactured composite. The currently proposed 3D Li–B–Mg composite anode may significantly propel the advancement of LMB technology from laboratory research to industrial commercialization.

Nonradiative recombination losses originating from crystallographic distortions and issues occurring upon interface formation are detrimental for the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells. Herein, we incorporated a series of carbamide molecules (urea, biuret, or triuret) consisting of both Lewis base (–NH2) and Lewis acid (–C=O) groups into the perovskite precursor to simultaneously eliminate the bulk and interface defects. Depending on the different coordination ability with perovskite component, the incorporated molecules can either modify crystallization dynamics allowing for large crystal growth at low temperature (60°C), associate with antisite or undercoordinated ions for defect passivation, or accumulate at the surface as an energy cascade layer to enhance charge transfer, respectively. Synergistic benefits of the above functions can be obtained by rationally optimizing additive combinations in an all-in-one deposition method. As a result, a champion efficiency of 21.6% with prolonged operational stability was achieved in an inverted MAPbI3 perovskite solar cell by combining biuret and triuret additives. The simplified all-in-one fabrication procedure, adaptable to different types of perovskites in terms of pure MAPbI3, mixed perovskite, and all-inorganic perovskite, provides a cost-efficient and reproducible way to obtain high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells.

Skin sensitization is an important occupational health problem and immunotoxicity endpoint. Considering animal welfare and time and cost savings, many alternative approaches, such as those conducted in vitro, in silico, and in chemo, have been proposed and applied to predict skin sensitization of compounds. Toxicologically, sensitizers can elicit excess toxicity at greater levels than non-sensitizers due to their capacity to react with proteins/peptides. Based on this understanding, calculated toxicity enhancements (Te) of 65 organic compounds from three in vitro bioassays, i.e. 48-hr ciliate (Tetrahymena pyriformis) growth inhibition, and both 96-hr fathead minnow and 48-hr Daphnia magna acute lethal toxicities, were employed to qualitatively and quantitatively predict skin sensitization potencies of the test agents. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy reaching 80% strongly suggested toxicity enhancement was an excellent parameter for predicting skin sensitization. Linear regressions of skin sensitization against toxicity enhancement were fitted for each bioassay, and they were improved after the sensitizers were categorized into different reaction mechanistic domains, which, in decreasing order of contribution from Te to sensitization, were SNAr > SN1 > MA. These results indicated that toxicity bioassays are useful tools and that Te could be a useful parameter that might be applied to predict skin sensitization.
