Laminated (NbTaMoW)N x films were prepared via co-sputtering. The sputtering variables were a substrate holder rotation speed of 2 and 10 rpm and a nitrogen flow ratio ( f N2 = N 2 /(Ar + N 2 )) of 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4. The (NbTaMoW)N x films fabricated at 30 rpm displayed columnar structures. The phase structures of the laminated (NbTaMoW)N x films varied from multiple body-centered cubic phases to a nanocrystalline and a face-centered cubic phase as the f N2 increased from 0.1 to 0.2 and 0.4. The mechanical and tribological properties of the laminated (NbTaMoW)N x films were evaluated. The laminated (NbTaMoW)N x films deposited at an f N2 of 0.4 had hardnesses of 25.2 and 26.1 GPa when prepared at 2 and 10 rpm, respectively, lower than the value of 29.9 GPa for the columnar (NbTaMoW)N x film prepared at an f N2 of 0.4 and 30 rpm. In contrast, the wear resistances of the laminated (NbTaMoW)N x films were superior to those of the columnar (NbTaMoW)N x films.

Pyridines and cyclopropanes are important structural units in chemistry. Herein, we introduce a photoredox-catalyzed approach for the ring opening and 1,3-oxypyridylation of aryl cyclopropanes using 4-cyanopyridines and carboxylic acids. This sequential process involves single-electron oxidation of the aryl cyclopropane, leading to nucleophilic ring opening and radical pyridylation at the benzylic position. The redox-neutral reaction exhibits high regioselectivity under mild reaction conditions, offering a broad substrate scope and wide applicability.

Among measures tackling the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the selling of private insurance policies covering individual infection is overlooked by the ethics literature. To record the "COVID Claimania" in Taiwan and to assess its ethical implications, we collected 38 policies from 10 insurers sold between January 2020 and May 2022 and found that their risk calculation of the COVID-19 prevalence ranged from 0.5% to 11.08%. In reality, the prevalence by the end of 2022 was 37% in Taiwan. Selling private insurance policies is ethically problematic in three ways. First, it represents the insurance industry's irresponsible risk-taking profit-seeking behaviors. Second, it would jeopardize the effectiveness of the disease-prevention measures by inducing uncontrollable moral hazards. Third, it would expose the insurance companies to unbearable financial risks and cause substantial negative external impacts. The immune infiltration profiles of the tumor microenvironment have effects on the prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Whereas, HNSCC is a heterogeneous group of tumors, but past work has not taken this into consideration. Herein, we investigate the associations between survival and the function of immune cells in different tumorigenic sites of HNSCC. 1149 samples of HNSCC were collected from publicly accessible databases. Based on gene expression data, CIBERSORTx was applied to determine the proportion of 22 immune cell subpopulations. In the Cox regression model, the associations between overall survival, disease-free survival, and immune cells were examined, modeling gene expression and immune cell proportion as quartiles. Consensus cluster analysis was utilized to uncover immune infiltration profiles. Regardless of tumor sites, CD8+ T cells and activated CD4 memory T cells were associated with favorable survival, while eosinophils were the opposite. The survival of the hypopharynx, oral cavity, and larynx subsites was somewhat affected by immune cells, while the survival of the oropharynx subsite potentially was the most impacted. High expression of TIGIT, CIITA, and CXCR6 was linked to better survival, mainly in the oropharynx subsite. Immune cell clusters with four distinct survival profiles were discovered, of which the cluster with a high CD8+ T cell content had a better prognosis. The immune-infiltration pattern is related to the survival of HNSCC to varying degrees depending on the tumor sites; forthcoming studies into immune-mediated infiltration profiles will lay the groundwork for treating HNSCC with precision therapy., (© 2024. Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy between the combined therapy of fire needling and cupping, and western medication on herpes zoster of acute stage, as well as the effects on Th17 and Treg cells and inflammatory factors, i.e. IL-10 and IL-17 in the peripheral blood., Methods: Eighty patients with herpes zoster of acute stage were randomly divided into a combined therapy (fire needling plus cupping) group and a western medication group, 40 cases in each one. In the combined therapy group, the pricking and scattering techniques with fire needle were used at ashi points and Jiaji (EX-B 2) corresponding to the affected spinal segments; afterwards, cupping therapy was delivered. The combined treatment was given once daily. In the western medication group, valaciclovir hydrochloride tablet and vitamin B 1 tablet were administered orally. The duration of treatment in each group was 10 days. Before each treatment from day 1 to day 10 and on day 11 , the score of symptoms and physical signs was observed in the two groups separately. Before each treatment from day 1 to day 10 and on day 11, 30, 60, the score of visual analogue scale (VAS) and skin lesion indexes were observed in the two groups. On day 60, the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia was recorded in the two groups. The levels of Th17 and Treg cells, Th17/Treg ratio in the peripheral blood, as well as serum levels of IL-10 and IL-17 were detected before and after treatment in the two groups. The clinical efficacy was compared between the two groups., Results: From day 6 to day 10 during treatment and on day 11, the scores of symptoms and physical signs in the combined therapy group were lower than those of the western medication group ( P <0.05, P <0.01). On day 3, day 6 to day 10 during treatment and day 11, day 30, VAS scores in the combined therapy group were lower than those of the western medication group ( P <0.05, P <0.01). On day 60, the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia in the combined therapy group was lower compared with that in the western medication group ( P <0.05). The blister arresting time and scabbing time in the combined therapy group were shorter than those of the western medication group ( P< 0.05). After treatment, the level of Th17, and Th17/Treg ratio in the peripheral blood, as well as the serum levels of IL-10 and IL-17 were all lower in comparison with those in the western medication group ( P <0.05). The curative and remarkably effective rate was 82.5% (33/40) in the combined therapy group, higher than 62.5% (25/40) in the western medication group ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: The early application of fire needling combined with cupping therapy can effectively treat herpes zoster of acute stage, relieve pain, and reduce the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia, which may be related to reducing the levels of Th17 and Treg cells, and Th17/Treg ratio in the peripheral blood, as well as the serum levels of IL-10 and IL-17 so that the cellular immune balance is modulated.

In recent years, more and more neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS, FTLD and AD, have been found to share a common pathological feature, which is the depletion of TDP-43 in the nucleus and the accumulation of TDP-43 in the cytoplasm through hyperphosphorylation, ubiquitination and cleavage. Therefore, this kind of neurodegenerative disease is also called TDP-43 proteinopathy. This suggests that TDP-43 plays a role in the pathogenesis of disease. Current studies show that the pathophysiological mechanism of TDP-43 in neurodegeneration is very complex. In this review, we describe the structure of TDP-43, its main physiological functions, the possible pathogenesis and how TDP-43 provides a new pathway to treat neurodegenerative diseases., (© 2022. Dantron (DA), a kind of polyhydric anthraquinone and one of the bio-active ingredient in Rheum officinale was chosen as the ligand to coordinate with the bio-active copper(II) ion to achieve its antibacterial copper(II) complex, DA-Cu. The coordination structure of DA-Cu, both in the crystal state and solution state, was studied by spectroscopy and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The inhibition zone, MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) values regarding the in vitro antibacterial activity of DA-Cu towards Flavobacterium columnar, which causes the bacterial gill-rot disease on fish, were significant and specific. DA-Cu in vivo acute toxicity on zebrafish and tilapia was evaluated, suggesting that the higher dose of DA-Cu than 0.1 mg/mL might give potential toxicity. The further therapeutic effect of DA-Cu on the tested tilapia challenged by Flavobacterium columnar was also studied, which showed its clear advantage (including the survival rate, relative weight gain rate, and feed conversion ratio) over DA and the positive control, Sanhuang San, at a much lower dosage of 0.025 mg/mL., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. The present study investigated the effect of Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata(RRP) on the energy metabolism of prefrontal cortex(PFC) of spontaneously hypertensive rats with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) based on the &quot;static Yin and dynamic Yang&quot; theory.Thirty spontaneously hypertensive male rats aged 3 weeks were randomly divided into a model group, a methylphenidate(MPH) group(2 mg·kg~(-1)), and an RRP group(2.4 g·kg~(-1)).Wistar-Kyoto(WKY) male rats of the same age were assigned to the normal group.Rats were treated with corresponding drugs twice per day, and those in the model group and the normal group received the same volume of 0.9% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC-Na) solution by gavage.The open-field test was performed to evaluate the spontaneous and impulsive behaviors of rats before treatment and on the 4~(th) week after treatment.Four weeks after treatment, PFC was isolated and mitochondria were prepared.The content of adenosine triphosphate(ATP), adenosine diphosphate(ADP), and adenosine monophosphate(AMP) in the PFC was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC), and energy charge(EC) was calculated.The parameters related to mitochondrial respiratory function were measured by the Clark oxygen electrode, specifically, state 3 respiration(ST3), state 4 respiration(ST4), and respiratory control rate(RCR).Enzymatic activities of succinate dehydrogenase(SDH), cytochrome C oxidase(COX), Na~+-K~+-ATPase, and Ca~(2+)-Mg~(2+)-ATPase were measured by chemical colorimetry.Mitochondrial permeability transition pore(mPTP) opening was measured by spectrophotometry.Protein expression of glucose transporter 1(GLUT1) and GLUT3 in PFC was tested by Western blot.Compared with the results in the model group, RRP could significantly reduce the total distance of movement, vertical times, and distance in the central area in the open field test(P&lt;0.05 or P&lt;0.01), increase the content of ATP and EC, decrease the content of AMP(P&lt;0.05), elevate ST3 and RCR(P&lt;0.05), potentiate activities of SDH, COX, Na~+-K~+-ATPase, and Ca~(2+)-Mg~(2+)-ATPase(P&lt;0.05 or P&lt;0.01), inhibit the opening of mPTP, and increase the expression levels of GLUT1 and GLUT3 proteins(P&lt;0.05).It was inferred that RRP could inhibit hyperacti-vity and impulsivity by improving the energy metabolism disorder in PFC of ADHD rats, and its mechanism may be related to the improvement of mitochondrial respiratory function, potentiation of Na~+-K~+-ATPase, Ca~(2+)-Mg~(2+)-ATPase, and mitochondrial respiratory enzymes, inhibition of the opening of mPTP, and up-regulation of the expression of glucose transporter proteins.This study initially reveals the biological connotation of the &quot;static Yin and dynamic Yang&quot; theory in ADHD.

Purpose: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a lethal cancer with high heterogeneity and dismal survival rates. Tumor immune microenvironment plays a critical role in sensitive to chemotherapy and prognosis. Herein, we determined the relevance of the composition of tumor-infiltrating immune cells to clinical outcomes in PDACs, and we evaluated these effects by molecular subtype., Experimental Design: Data of 1,274 samples from publically available datasets were collected. Molecular subtypes were predicted with support vector machine. Twenty-two subsets of immune cells were estimated with CIBERSORTx. The associations between each cell subset and overall survival (OS), relapse free survival (RFS), and complete response (CR) to chemotherapy were evaluated, modelling cellular proportions as quartiles., Results: An immune-related cluster was identified with unsupervised hierarchical clustering of hallmark pathways. Of the immune cells investigated, M0 macrophages emerged as closely associated with worse OS (HR =1.23, 95% CI = 1.15-1.31, p=1.57×10 -9 ) and RFS (HR = 1.14, 95% CI =1.04-1.25, p=2.93×10 -3 ), regardless of molecular subtypes. The CD8+ T cells conferred favorable survival. The neutrophils conferred poor OS overall (HR=1.17, 95% CI=1.10-1.23, p=1.74×10 -7 ) and within the classical subtype. In the basal-like subtype, activated mast cells were associated with worse OS. Consensus clustering revealed six immune subgroups with distinct survival patterns and CR rates. The higher expression of PD1 was associated with better OS., Conclusions: The immune cellular composition infiltrate in PDAC are likely to have effects on prognosis. This study reports a new type of drug-loaded core-shell nanofibers capable of providing dual controlled release with tunable dose in the second phase. The core-shell nanofibers were fabricated through a modified coaxial electrospinning using a Teflon-coated concentric spinneret. Poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and ethyl cellulose were used as the shell and core polymer matrices respectively, and the content of active ingredient acetaminophen (APAP) in the core was programmed. The Teflon-coated concentric spinneret may facilitate the efficacious and stable preparation of core-shell nanofibers through the modified coaxial electrospinning, where the core fluids were electrospinnable and the shell fluid had no electrospinnability. The resultant nanofibers had linear morphologies and clear core-shell structures, as observed by the scanning and transmission electron microscopic images. APAP was amorphously distributed in the shell and core polymer matrices due to the favorite second-order interactions, as indicated by the X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopic tests. The results from the in vitro dissolution tests demonstrated that the core-shell nanofibers were able to furnish the desired dual drug controlled-release profiles with a tunable drug release amount in the second phase. The modified coaxial electrospinning is a useful tool to generate nanostructures with a tailored components and compositions in their different parts, and thus to realize the desired functional performances.

This study investigates quercetin-loaded zein nanoribbons, which were fabricated using different types of electrospinning processes. Using ethanol aqueous solutions as sheath fluids, the widths of quercetin-loaded zein nanoribbons (D, nm) could be manipulated simply through the adjustment of water contents(C) in the sheath fluids according to an equation of D=958-8.01C(r=0.9977), as indicated by the field emission scanning electron microscopic observations. X-ray diffraction and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared analysis suggested that the quercetin presented in the zein nanoribbons in an amorphous state due to their high compability resulted from hydrogen bonds. In vitro dissolution tests verified that nanoribbons from the coaxial process and single fluid process could provide drug sustained release profiles via a typical Fickian diffusion mechanism, and the former exhibited better performance than the later in terms of small initial burst effect and leveling-off release. Coaxial electrospinning with solvents can expand the capability of electrospinning in generating nanoproducts and provide a way for improving the nanoproducts' quality and functional performance.

The objective of this study is to develop a structural nanocomposite of multiple components in the form of core-sheath nanofibres using coaxial electrospinning for the fast dissolving of a poorly water-soluble drug quercetin. Under the selected conditions, core-sheath nanofibres with quercetin and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) distributed in the core and sheath part of nanofibres, respectively, were successfully generated, and the drug content in the nanofibres was able to be controlled simply through manipulating the core fluid flow rates. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images demonstrated that the nanofibres prepared from the single sheath fluid and double core/sheath fluids (with core-to-sheath flow rate ratios of 0.4 and 0.7) have linear morphology with a uniform structure and smooth surface. The TEM images clearly demonstrated the core-sheath structures of the produced nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results verified that quercetin and SDS were well distributed in the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) matrix in an amorphous state, due to the favourite second-order interactions. In vitro dissolution studies showed that the core-sheath composite nanofibre mats could disintegrate rapidly to release quercetin within 1 min. The study reported here provides an example of the systematic design, preparation, characterization and application of a new type of structural nanocomposite as a fast-disintegrating drug delivery system.

The capability of core/sheath nanofibers prepared using coaxial electrospinning to provide adjustable biphasic drug release was investigated. Using ketoprofen (KET) as the model drug, polyvinylpyrrolidone as the sheath polymer, and ethyl cellulose as the core matrix, the coaxial process could be conducted smoothly and continuously without spinneret clogging. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed linear nanofibers with homogeneous and clear core/sheath structures. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction verified that the core/sheath nanofibers were nanocomposites, with the drug present in the polymer matrix in an amorphous state. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectra demonstrated that the sheath polymer and core matrix were compatible with KET owing to hydrogen bonding. In vitro dissolution tests showed that the core/sheath nanofibers could provide typical biphasic drug release profiles consisting of an immediate and sustained release. The amount of drug released in the first phase was tailored by adjusting the sheath flow rate, and the remaining drug released in the second phase was controlled by a typical diffusion mechanism. The present study shows a simple and useful approach for the systematic design and fabrication of novel biomaterials with structural characteristics for providing complicated and programmed drug release profiles using coaxial electrospinning., (Copyright © 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. This study used magnetic resonance imaging to analyze causes and clinical courses of pediatric occipital lobe injury. Patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging for suspected bilateral occipital lobe injury at our Neurodevelopmental Department between July 2007 and June 2011 were included. We evaluated magnetic resonance imaging characteristics, clinical courses, electroencephalogram monitoring, and Denver Development Screen Test scores. Twenty-one infants were examined. Of these, 10 had been born preterm. Thirteen patients demonstrated hypoglycemia. Perinatal period hypoglycemia comprised the most common cause (71.4%) of occipital brain injury. Visual abnormalities were evident in 18 patients. Seventeen (80.9%) patients manifested epilepsy. Infantile spasms were observed in 13 cases (76.5%). According to Denver Development Screen Test assessment, 17 patients demonstrated delayed motor development. Motor function and language improved in 10 patients after effective control of their seizures. Hypoglycemia constitutes the most common cause of occipital injury in infants. Visual impairment, startle episodes, infantile spasms, and motor developmental delay comprise the most common complications, whereas language function is usually spared., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc. Objective: To evaluate the effect of an integrated control strategy and to quantify the spatial-temporal variation of infected snails in the bottomland areas after the strategy was implemented., Methods: Based on the geographic database of infected snail distribution at the village level during 2004 - 2010 in Anxiang county, Hunan province, spatial autocorrelation analysis and spatial scan statistics were applied to analyze the spatial-temporal characteristics on the distribution of infected snails., Results: The number of embankments with infected snails in Anxiang county decreased from 23 in 2004 to 10 in 2010, while the rate of frame with infected snail in embankments decreased from 4.32‰ in 2004 to 0.12‰ in 2010. The spatial distribution of infected snails was nonrandom, only in 2004 and 2005 with Moran's I = 0.21 (P < 0.10) and Moran's I = 0.13 (P < 0.10) respectively. Data from the local spatial auto-correlation analysis showed that the number of villages with H-H types of auto-correlation model had been gradually decreasing. The results of SaTScan statistics appeared the same as from the local spatial auto-correlation analysis, showing that the number of areas with increased risk was decreasing., Conclusion: The comprehensive measures with emphasis on infectious source control seemed effective for schistosomiasis control program. The current distribution characteristics provided us with evidence that the resource assignment could be more reasonably implemented so as to control schistosomiasis in a more effective way.

The method of combining white rot fungal strains was used to enhance laccase activity, and the interaction mechanism between strains was also studied. The laccase activity of combined fungi of strain 55 (Trametes trogii) and strain m-6 (Trametes versicolor) were 24.13 and 4.07-fold higher than that of strain 55 and strain m-6, respectively. No inhibitory effect was observed when the two strains were co-cultivated. On plate cultivation, there was hyphal interference in the contact area, where laccase activity was the highest followed by brown pigmentation. In liquid cultivation, strain m-6 played much more important role on enhancement of laccase activity, and the laccase activity of strain 55 by adding strain m-6 was 7.03-fold higher than that of strain m-6 by adding strain 55, furthermore, filter sterilized- and high temperature autoclaved-extracellular substances of strain m-6 could also stimulate strain 55 to excrete more laccase, which led to 6.79-fold and 4. 60-fold increase in laccase activity by adding 20 mL, respectively. The native staining results of Native-PAGE showed that the types of laccase isozymes were not changed when strains were co-cultured, but the concentration of three types increased.

Objective: To study the changes in liver function in patients with epidemic hemorrhagic fever (EHF)., Method: A retrospective analysis of the laboratory tests of liver function in 103 patients with EHF and control subjects was carried out., Results: The alanine aminotransferase (ALT), serum bilirubin (SB) and albumin levels in patients with severe and critical liver damages significantly differed from those in milder cases, and more sever liver damages were found in the death cases of EHF than in survived patients in terms of ALT and SB increment (P=0.000). The liver damage was related to the clinical type, age and the levels of blood platelet , albumin, lactic dehydrogenase and creatinine in EHF cases (P=0.000, 0.000, 0.030, 0.010, 0.000 and 0.013, respectively)., Conclusions: Liver damage is common in patients with EHF and exacerbates with the severity of the disease. Monitoring of ALT, SB and albumin is helpful for evaluating the progression and prognosis of EHF.

From printing and dyeing actived sludge, PVA- degrading symbiotic bacteria was isolated. The symbiotic bacteria is composed of B1 and B2. During PVA biodegradation, B1 produces a certain growth factor for B2, B2 produces PVA-degrading enzyme. The PVA-degrading characters of the symbiotic bacteria are examined. When the concentration of PVA was 0.1, 0.5, 1g/L respectively,more than 80% of PVA was degradated after 7days. During the treatment of the dyeing and printing wastewater, when the temperature was 30 degree C ,the removal of COD(Cr) was 69.75%, the proper treating time was 12h.

Using the improved Kirsner model of ulcerative colitis in rabbits, we found that the therapeutic effect of methyl 5-amino salicylate hydrochloride (M-5-AS) was similar to that of sulfasalazine (salicylazosulfapyridine, SZ). The length of pathological damage and the range of diffuse ulcers were decreased in comparison with the control group (P less than 0.01, 0.05). Microscopically, tissue repairing at the regions of ulcers and proliferation in serolemma were noted, and the edema in muscular mesenchyme was less evident in the treated rabbits. M-5-AS completely inhibited the spontaneous contraction of rat stomach fundus strips and colon. The IC50 of the resting tone of the 2 tissues were 1.30 +/- 0.39 and 0.72 +/- 0.25 mmol/L, respectively. In addition, M-5-AS antagonized the contraction induced by human fresh semen. The results suggest that the therapeutic mechanism is related to the antagonism of prostaglandins in the inflammatory regions.
