3. Metal-Insulator Transition of the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 Interface Electron System

Abstract

We report on a metal-insulator transition in the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface electron system, of which the carrier density is tuned by an electric gate field. Below a critical carrier density n_c ranging from 0.5-1.5 * 10^13/cm^2, LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces, forming drain-source channels in field-effect devices are non-ohmic. The differential resistance at zero channel bias diverges within a 2% variation of the carrier density. Above n_c, the conductivity of the ohmic channels has a metal-like temperature dependence, while below n_c conductivity sets in only above a threshold electric field. For a given thickness of the LaAlO3 layer, the conductivity follows a sigma_0 ~(n - n_c)/n_c characteristic. Abstract

Using tunneling spectroscopy we have measured the spectral density of states of the mobile, two-dimensional electron system generated at the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface. As shown by the density of states the interface electron system differs qualitatively, first, from the electron systems of the materials defining the interface and, second, from the two-dimensional electron gases formed at interfaces between conventional semiconductors.

Abstract

Magnetic field dependence of low temperature specific heat of spinel oxide superconductor LiTi_2O_4 has been elaborately investigated. In the normal state, the obtained electronic coefficient of specific heat gamma_n = 19.15 mJ/mol K2, the Debye temperature is 657 K and some other parameters are compared with those reported earlier. The superconducting transition at Tc ~ 11.4 K is very sharp (DeltaTc ~ 0.3 K) and the estimated delataC/gamma_nTc is ~ 1.78. In the superconducting state, the best fit of data leads to the electronic specific heat C_es/Gamma_nTc = 9.87 exp (-1.58 Tc/T) without field and gamma(H) ~ H^0.95 with fields. In addition, Hc2(0) ~ 11.7 T, Hc(0) ~ 0.32 T, xi_GL(0) ~ 5.5 nm, lambda_GL(0) ~ 160 nm, and Hc1(0) ~ 26 mT are estimated from Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory or other relevant relations. All results from the present study indicate that LiTi2O4 can be well described by a typical type-II, BCS-like, moderate coupling, and fully gapped superconductor in the dirty limit. Abstract

Deleted in liver cancer 1 (DLC1) is a RhoGTPase activation protein-containing tumor suppressor that associates with various types of cancer. Although DLC2 shares a similar domain structure with that of DLC1, the function of DLC2 is not well characterized. Here, we describe the expression and ablation of DLC2 in mice using a reporter-knockout approach. DLC2 is expressed in several tissues and in endothelial cells (ECs) of blood vessels. Although ECs and blood vessels show no histological abnormalities and mice appear overall healthy, DLC2-mutant mice display enhanced angiogenic responses induced by matrigel and by tumor cells. Silencing of DLC2 in human ECs has reduced cell attachment, increased migration, and tube formation. These changes are rescued by silencing of RhoA, suggesting that the process is RhoA pathway dependent. These results indicate that DLC2 is not required for mouse development and normal vessel formation, but may protect mouse from unwanted angiogenesis induced by, for example, tumor cells.

Abstract

Practical and effective post-harvest procedures to reduce mycotoxin content in the food and feed supply chains are highly required by stakeholders, as well as alternative use options of mycotoxin-contaminated materials. Within the MycoKey project (WP6-Remediation) some strategies have been explored and the most relevant results will be presented, with major emphasis to exploitable results. In particular, i) the efficacy of industrial-scale cleaning equipment based on mechanical and optical technologies in reducing aflatoxins and Fusarium toxins (namely DON, ZEA, FBs) content in naturally contaminated maize; ii) the in vitro ability at different pH values of several materials including minerals, biopolymers, yeast cell walls (YCW) and mixtures of them in simultaneously binding mycotoxins of major concern, namely AFB1, ZEA, OTA and FB1; iii) the efficacy of two selected binders (a YCW-based product and a bio-organoclay) in simultaneously adsorbing AFB1, ZEA, OTA and FB1 by in vivo toxicokinetic studies in rats and pigs; iv) the ability of some microorganisms (lactic acid bacteria and yeasts) to degrade OTA in vitro and the ability of Metschnikowia pulcherrima and Lactobacillus plantarum strains to decontaminate OTA in must during a microvinification process at lab-scale; v) the degradation of DON in wheat grains by a new bacterial strain, namely Sphingomonas S3-4; vi) the efficacy of Pleurotus eryngii in AFB1 degradation on contaminated substrate for mushroom cultivation; vii) the efficacy of two laccase enzymes purified from Pleurotus cultures in in vitro degradation of AFB1, AFM1, ZEA, T-2 and FB1; vii) the efficient production of biogas and bioethanol from mycotoxin contaminated materials in a lab-scale bioreactor.

Abstract

The impact behaviors of nanoclay filled nylon 6 (nano-nylon 6) or nylon 6 blended with poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) terpolymers (ABS) were investigated here using polybutadiene grafted maleic anhydride (PB-g-MA) as a compatibilizer to enhance interphase interaction. It is found that impact strength increases slightly for nano-nylon 6/ABS blend system with the addition of compatibilizer at various ABS compositions, but increases to a certain degree for nylon 6/ABS case. Similar effects are also found with decreasing test temperature, especially at a blend composition of 80/20. These discrepancies are attributed to a different degree of available reaction sites from amine group on nano-nylon 6 and nylon 6 as well as the rigidity of clay in deteriorating toughness. As for thermal properties, the heat distortion temperature shows marginally decrease in the nano-nylon 6/ABS blend. Through morphology observations, the etched ABS particle sizes tend to decrease with the additions of compatibilizer for both blends, but are larger with higher contents of ABS concentrations. 33. Fabrication of Strain Gauges via Contact Printing

Abstract

In this study, we developed a novel and efficient process for the fabrication of resistive strain gauges for healthcare-related applications. First, 1,9-nonanedithiol cross-linked gold nanoparticle (GNP) films were prepared via layer-by-layer (LbL) spin-coating and subsequently transferred onto flexible polyimide foil by contact printing. Four-point bending tests revealed linear response characteristics with gauge factors of ∼14 for 4 nm GNPs and ∼26 for 7 nm GNPs. This dependency of strain sensitivity is attributed to the perturbation of charge carrier tunneling between neighboring GNPs, which becomes more efficient with increasing particle size. Fatigue tests revealed that the strain-resistance performance remained nearly the same after 10.000 strain/relaxation cycles. We demonstrate that these sensors are well suited to monitor muscle movements. Furthermore, we fabricated all-printed strain sensors by directly transferring cross-linked GNP films onto soft PDMS sheets equipped with interdigitated electrodes. Due to the low elastic modulus of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), these sensors are easily deformed and, therefore, they respond sensitively to faint forces. When taped onto the skin above the radial artery, they enable the well-resolved and robust recording of pulse waves with diagnostically relevant details.

36. NStrace: a bus-driven instruction trace tool for PowerPC microprocessors

Abstract

NStrace is a bus-driven hardware trace facility developed for the PowerPC[R] family of superscalar RISC microprocessors. It uses a recording of activity on a target processor's bus to infer the sequence of instructions executed during that recording period. NStrace is distinguished from related approaches by its use of an architecture-level simulator to generate the instruction sequence from the bus recording. The generated trace represents the behavior of the processor as it executes at normal speed while interacting normally with its run-time environment. Furthermore, details of the processor state that are not generally available to other trace mechanisms can be provided by the architectural simulation. There are two main components to the process of generating bus-driven instruction traces: bus capture and trace generation. Bus capture is triggered by a call to a system program that puts a particular address on the bus, then establishes the initial state of the processor by a combination of writing out register values and invalidating caches. A logic analyzer records the bus activity, and from this a file of bus transactions is produced. Trace generation proceeds by driving a processor simulator with these bus transactions and recording the sequence of instructions that results. The processor simulator is an elaboration of that developed for the PowerPC Visual Simulator. We have successfully generated instruction traces for a mix of utility programs and real applications on several microprocessor platforms running several operating systems. The capacity of the bus recording hardware is two million transactions, yielding instruction traces with lengths of the order of one hundred million instructions. This trace facility has been used for a number of studies covering a range of performance issues involving software, hardware, and their interactions.

37. FERTILIZATION MODEL FOR FLUE-CURED TOBACCO (NICOTIANA TABACUM L.) IN SOUTHWEST CHINA.

Abstract

The fertilization model is an important breakthrough in the field of nutrient management for high quality crop production. However, there are few studies on the flue-cured tobacco fertilization model. In this study eight plots were selected, for use in a fertilization experiment to determine the optimal nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer application amounts for flue-cured tobacco planting in the Southwest China. Based on parameters such as the nutrient requirements, fertilizer utilization rate, and soil nutrient correction coefficient of flue-cured tobacco, the curves of N, P2O5, K2O and their corresponding nutrient correction coefficients were constructed. We fitted a non-linear curve model using soil parameters, i.e. yield per area, nutrient requirements and fertilizer utilization rate, etc. The result showed that the recommended fertilization models are N = 0.091×Y - 149.505×SN 0.029; P2O5 = 0.072×Y - 11.595×SP 0.749; K2O = 0.199×Y - 55.924×SK 0.351. The validation of the experiments showed that the yield of the flue-cured tobacco reached about 2,700 kg ha-1. In addition, the recommended amount of fertilization was 30% less than the conventional fertilizer application. Therefore, the recommended amount will lower the production cost, reduce the environmental pollution caused by excess soil fertility, and promote the sustainable development of flue-cured tobacco planting. Abstract

32nd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 1108-1111, Solar Frontier developed a new type of solution coating method for Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 solar cells. Carrier density, grain growth, recombination velocity are controlled with newly developed absorber formation ink. Photo conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.72% was achieved with new process and certified by Fraunhofer Institutes, Germany. Internally PCE of 18.7% was measured these results are the highest reported efficiency for a solar cell with solution coated CuInGa(S,Se)2. Abstract

MultiferroicxBi3.25La0.75Ti3O12-(1-x)CoFe2O4composite thin films withx= 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates by a chemical solution deposition process. The well-defined ferroelectric loops are observed. ThePrvalues are 8.89, 11.97, and 13.78 μC/cm2under the condition of about 350 kV/cm electric field for the composite films withx= 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7 respectively. The composite films exhibit typical magnetic hysteresis loops, as well as remnant magnetizations. Magnetoelectric effect which is dependent onHbiasis observed. The composite films exhibit both good ferroelectric and magnetic properties at room temperature, as well as a magnetoelectric effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 763-765, Wafer quality of multi-crystalline (mc-Si) and mono-crystalline (c-Si) region within the monocast Si wafer are investigated in this work. C-Si region shows higher internal quantum efficiency in infrared region, which means better wafer quality. However, it is not easy to predict cell performance by the area of c-Si since c-Si region might contain crystal defect invisible to naked eyes but could be identified by photoluminescence (PL) technique. Crystal defect affects the cell efficiency especially on Voc and Jsc whereas wafers from different positions of the ingot, like multi-Si, also influence the performance of monocast Si wafers. Not only the ratio of c-Si region, but the positions of the ingot and crystal defect information of monocast wafers are necessary to be realized on cell performance.

49. Metal-insulator transition of the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface electron system

Abstract

We report on a metal-insulator transition in the LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interface electron system, of which the carrier density is tuned by an electric gate field. Below a critical carrier density n_c ranging from 0.5-1.5 * 10^13/cm^2, LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces, forming drain-source channels in field-effect devices are non-ohmic. The differential resistance at zero channel bias diverges within a 2% variation of the carrier density. Above n_c, the conductivity of the ohmic channels has a metal-like temperature dependence, while below n_c conductivity sets in only above a threshold electric field. For a given thickness of the LaAlO3 layer, the conductivity follows a sigma_0 ~(n - n_c)/n_c characteristic.
