Search

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has obtained multi-epoch observations providing the opportunity for a comprehensive variability search aiming to uncover new variables. We have therefore undertaken the task of creating a catalog of variable sources based on version 3 of the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC), which relies on publicly available images obtained with the WFPC2, ACS, and WFC3 instruments onboard the HST. We adopted magnitude-dependent thresholding in median absolute deviation (a robust measure of light curve scatter) combined with sophisticated preprocessing techniques and visual quality control to identify and validate variable sources observed by Hubble with the same instrument and filter combination five or more times. The Hubble Catalog of Variables (HCV) includes 84,428 candidate variable sources (out of 3.7 million HSC sources that were searched for variability) with $V \leq 27$ mag; for 11,115 of them the variability is detected in more than one filter. The data points in the light curves of the variables in the HCV catalog range from five to 120 points (typically having less than ten points); the time baseline ranges from under a day to over 15 years; while $\sim$8% of all variables have amplitudes in excess of 1 mag. Visual inspection performed on a subset of the candidate variables suggests that at least 80% of the candidate variables that passed our automated quality control are true variable sources rather than spurious detections resulting from blending, residual cosmic rays, and calibration errors. The HCV is the first, homogeneous catalog of variable sources created from archival HST data and currently is the deepest catalog of variables available. The catalog includes variable stars in our Galaxy and nearby galaxies, as well as transients and variable active galactic nuclei. We present the results of the photometric analysis of a large part of the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud. Using the 6.5m Magellan Telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, we have acquired deep B and I images in four fields (0.44 degree each in diameter), yielding accurate photometry for 1,068,893 stars down to 24th magnitude, with a spatial resolution of 0.20 arcsec per pixel. Colour-magnitude diagrams and (completeness corrected) luminosity functions have been constructed, yielding significant new results that indicate at least two discrete star formation events over a period from 2.7 to 4 Gyr ago. SIGNALS, the Star formation, Ionized Gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey, is a large observing program designed to investigate massive star formation and HII regions in a sample of local extended galaxies. The program will use the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Over 355 hours (54.7 nights) have been allocated beginning in fall 2018 for eight consecutive semesters. Once completed, SIGNALS will provide a statistically reliable laboratory to investigate massive star formation, including over 50 000 resolved HII regions : the largest, most complete, and homogeneous database of spectroscopically and spatially resolved extragalactic HII regions ever assembled. For each field observed, three datacubes covering the spectral bands of the filters SN1 (363 -386 nm), SN2 (482 - 513 nm), and SN3 (647 - 685 nm) are gathered. The spectral resolution selected for each spectral band is 1000, 1000, and 5000, respectively. As defined, the project sample will facilitate the study of small-scale nebular physics and many other phenomena linked to star formation at a mean spatial resolution of 20 pc. This survey also has considerable legacy value for additional topics including planetary nebulae, diffuse ionized gas, andsupernova remnants. We use a sub-set of the DustPedia galaxy sample (461 galaxies) to investigate the effect the environment has had on galaxies. We consider Virgo cluster and field samples and also assign a density contrast parameter to each galaxy, as defined by the local density of SDSS galaxies. We consider their chemical evolution (using M_{Dust}/M_{Baryon} and M_{Gas}/M_{Baryon}), their specific star formation rate (SFR/M_{Stars}), star formation efficiency (SFR/M_{Gas}), stars-to-dust mass ratio (M_{Stars}/M_{Dust}), gas-to-dust mass ratio (M_{Gas}/M_{Dust}) and the relationship between star formation rate per unit mass of dust and dust temperature (SFR/M_{Dust} and T_{Dust}). Late type galaxies (later than Sc) in all of the environments can be modelled using simple closed box chemical evolution and a simple star formation history (SFR(t) \propto t\exp{-t/\tau}). For earlier type galaxies the physical mechanisms that give rise to their properties are clearly much more varied and require a more complicated model (mergers, gas in or outflow). However, we find little or no difference in the properties of galaxies of the same morphological type within the cluster, field or with different density contrasts. It appears that it is morphology, how and whenever this is laid down, and consistent internal physical processes that primarily determine the derived properties of galaxies in the DustPedia sample and not processes related to differences in the local environment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Within the framework of the DustPedia project we investigate the properties of cosmic dust and its interaction with the stellar radiation (originating from different stellar populations) for 814 galaxies in the nearby Universe, all observed by the Herschel Space Observatory. We take advantage of the widely used galaxy SED fitting code CIGALE, properly adapted to include the state-of-the-art dust model THEMIS. Using the DustPedia photometry we determine the physical properties of the galaxies, such as, the dust and stellar mass, the star-formation rate, the bolometric luminosity as well as the unattenuated and the absorbed by dust stellar light, for both the old (> 200 Myr) and young (<= 200 Myr) stellar populations. We show how the mass of stars, dust, and atomic gas, as well as the star-formation rate and the dust temperature vary between galaxies of different morphologies and provide recipes to estimate these parameters given their Hubble stage (T). We find a mild correlation between the mass fraction of the small a-C(:H) grains with the specific star-formation rate. On average, young stars are very efficient in heating the dust, with absorption fractions reaching as high as ~77% of the total, unattenuated luminosity of this population. On the other hand, the maximum absorption fraction of old stars is ~24%. Dust heating in early-type galaxies is mainly due to old stars, up to a level of ~90%. Young stars progressively contribute more for `typical' spiral galaxies and they become the dominant source of dust heating for Sm type and irregular galaxies, donating up to ~60% of their luminosity to this purpose. Finally, we find a strong correlation of the dust heating fraction by young stars with morphology and the specific star-formation rate., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

Observations of evolution in the dust-to-metal ratio allow us to constrain the dominant dust processing mechanisms. In this work, we present a study of the dust-to-metal and dust-to-gas ratios in a sub-sample of ~500 DustPedia galaxies. Using literature and MUSE emission line fluxes, we derived gas-phase metallicities (oxygen abundances) for over 10000 individual regions and determine characteristic metallicities for each galaxy. We study how the relative dust, gas, and metal contents of galaxies evolve by using metallicity and gas fraction as proxies for evolutionary state. The global oxygen abundance and nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio are found to increase monotonically as galaxies evolve. Additionally, unevolved galaxies (gas fraction > 60%, metallicity 12 + log(O/H) < 8.2) have dust-to-metal ratios that are about a factor of 2.1 lower (a factor of six lower for galaxies with gas fraction > 80%) than the typical dust-to-metal ratio (Md/MZ ~ 0.214) for more evolved sources. However, for high gas fractions, the scatter is larger due to larger observational uncertainties as well as a potential dependence of the dust grain growth timescale and supernova dust yield on local conditions and star formation histories. We find chemical evolution models with a strong contribution from dust grain growth describe these observations reasonably well. The dust-to-metal ratio is also found to be lower for low stellar masses and high specific star formation rates (with the exception of some sources undergoing a starburst). Most radiative transfer models assume that dust in spiral galaxies is distributed exponentially. In this paper our goal is to verify this assumption by analysing the two-dimensional large-scale distribution of dust in galaxies from the DustPedia sample. For this purpose, we make use of Herschel imaging in five bands, from 100 to 500{\mu}m, in which the cold dust constituent is primarily traced and makes up the bulk of the dust mass in spiral galaxies. For a subsample of 320 disc galaxies, we successfully perform a simultaneous fitting with a single S\'ersic model of the Herschel images in all five bands using the multiband modelling code GALFITM. We report that the S\'ersic index $n$, which characterises the shape of the S\'ersic profile, lies systematically below 1 in all Herschel bands and is almost constant with wavelength. The average value at 250{\mu}m is $0.67\pm0.37$ (187 galaxies are fitted with $n_{250}\leq0.75$, 87 galaxies have $0.751.25$). Most observed profiles exhibit a depletion in the inner region (at $r<0.3-0.4$ of the optical radius $r_{25}$ ) and are more or less exponential in the outer part. We also find breaks in the dust emission profiles at longer distances $(0.5-0.6)r_{25}$ which are associated with the breaks in the optical and near-infrared. We assume that the observed deficit of dust emission in the inner galaxy region is related to the depression in the radial profile of the HI surface density in the same region because the atomic gas reaches high enough surface densities there to be transformed into molecular gas. If a galaxy has a triggered star formation in the inner region (for example, because of a strong bar instability, which transfers the gas inwards to the centre, or a pseudobulge formation), no depletion or even an excess of dust emission in the centre is observed., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Our objective is to investigate the physical properties of the ionised gas of the low-metallicity dwarf galaxy, IC 10, at various spatial scales: from individual HII regions to the entire galaxy scale and examine whether diagnostics for integrated measurements introduce bias in the results. We modeled the ionised gas combining the mid- and far-infrared fine-structure cooling lines observed with Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS, with the photoionisation code Cloudy. The free parameters of the models are the age of the stellar cluster, the density and the ionisation parameter of the ionised gas as well as the depth of the cloud. The latter is used to investigate the leakage of the ionising photons from the analysed regions of IC 10. We investigate HII regions in the main star-forming body, on scales of ~25 pc, three in the main star-forming region in the center of the galaxy and two on the first arc. We then consider larger sizes on the scale of ~200 pc. We find that most clumps have nearly identical properties, density ~10$^{2.} $ - 10$^{2.6}$ cm$^{-3}$, ionisation parameter between 10$^{-2.2}$ and 10$^{-1.6}$ and age of the stellar cluster ~5.5 Myr. All of them are matter-bounded regions, allowing ionising photons to leak. The relatively uniform physical properties of the clumps suggest a common origin for their star formation activity, which could be related to the feedback from stellar winds or supernovae of a previous generation of stars. The properties derived for ~200 pc size "zones" have similar properties as the HII regions they encompass, but with the larger regions tending to be more radiation-bounded. Finally, we investigate the fraction of [CII] 157.7 {\mu}m, [SiII] 34.8 {\mu}m, and [FeII] 25.9 {\mu}m, emission arising from the ionised gas phase and we find that most of the emission originates from the neutral gas, not from the ionised gas., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We study the fraction of stellar radiation absorbed by dust, f_abs, in 814 galaxies of different morphological types. The targets constitute the vast majority (93%) of the DustPedia sample, including almost all large (optical diameter larger than 1'), nearby (v <= 3000 km/s) galaxies observed with the Herschel Space Observatory. For each object, we model the spectral energy distribution from the ultraviolet to the sub-millimetre using the dedicated, aperture-matched DustPedia photometry and the fitting code CIGALE. The value of f_abs is obtained from the total luminosity emitted by dust and from the bolometric luminosity, which are estimated by the fit. On average, 19% of the stellar radiation is absorbed by dust in DustPedia galaxies. The fraction rises to 25% if only late-type galaxies are considered. The dependence of f_abs on morphology, showing a peak for Sb-Sc galaxies, is weak; it reflects a stronger, yet broad, positive correlation with the bolometric luminosity, which is identified for late-type, disk-dominated, high-specific-star-formation rate, gas-rich objects. We find no variation of f_abs with inclination, at odds with radiative transfer models of edge-on galaxies. These results call for a self-consistent modelling of the evolution of the dust mass and geometry along the build-up of the stellar content. We also provide template spectral energy distributions in bins of morphology and luminosity and study the variation of f_abs with stellar mass and specific star formation rate. We confirm that the local Universe is missing the high f_abs}, luminous and actively star-forming objects necessary to explain the energy budget in observations of the extragalactic background light., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, A&A accepted. We analyzed the massive star population of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4535 using archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images in filters F555W and F814W, equivalent to Johnson V and Kron-Cousins I. We performed high precision point spread function fitting photometry of 24353 sources including 3762 candidate blue supergiants, 841 candidate yellow supergiants and 370 candidate red supergiants. We estimated the ratio of blue to red supergiants as a decreasing function of galactocentric radius. Using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics isochrones at solar metallicity, we defined the luminosity function and estimated the star formation history of the galaxy over the last 60 Myrs. We conducted a variability search in the V and I filters using three variability indexes: the median absolute deviation, the interquartile range and the inverse von-Neumann ratio. This analysis yielded 120 new variable candidates with absolute magnitudes ranging from M$_{V}$ = $-$4 to $-$11 mag. We used the MESA evolutionary tracks at solar metallicity, to classify the variables based on their absolute magnitude and their position on the color-magnitude diagram. Among the new candidate variable sources are eight candidate variable red supergiants, three candidate variable yellow supergiants and one candidate luminous blue variable, which we suggest for follow-up observations., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 7 pages, 7 Tables, 53 figures

The DustPedia project is capitalising on the legacy of the Herschel Space Observatory, using cutting-edge modelling techniques to study dust in the 875 DustPedia galaxies - representing the vast majority of extended galaxies within 3000 km s$^{-1}$ that were observed by Herschel. This work requires a database of multiwavelength imagery and photometry that greatly exceeds the scope (in terms of wavelength coverage and number of galaxies) of any previous local-Universe survey. We constructed a database containing our own custom Herschel reductions, along with standardised archival observations from GALEX, SDSS, DSS, 2MASS, WISE, Spitzer, and Planck. Using these data, we performed consistent aperture-matched photometry, which we combined with external supplementary photometry from IRAS and Planck. We present our multiwavelength imagery and photometry across 42 UV-microwave bands for the 875 DustPedia galaxies. Our aperture-matched photometry, combined with the external supplementary photometry, represents a total of 21,857 photometric measurements. A typical DustPedia galaxy has multiwavelength photometry spanning 25 bands. We also present the Comprehensive & Adaptable Aperture Photometry Routine (CAAPR), the pipeline we developed to carry out our aperture-matched photometry. CAAPR is designed to produce consistent photometry for the enormous range of galaxy and observation types in our data. In particular, CAAPR is able to determine robust cross-compatible uncertainties, thanks to a novel method for reliably extrapolating the aperture noise for observations that cover a very limited amount of background. The European Space Agency has invested heavily in two cornerstones missions; Herschel and Planck. The legacy data from these missions provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to study cosmic dust in galaxies so that we can answer fundamental questions about, for example: the origin of the chemical elements, physical processes in the interstellar medium (ISM), its effect on stellar radiation, its relation to star formation and how this relates to the cosmic far infrared background. In this paper we describe the DustPedia project, which is enabling us to develop tools and computer models that will help us relate observed cosmic dust emission to its physical properties (chemical composition, size distribution, temperature), to its origins (evolved stars, super novae, growth in the ISM) and the processes that destroy it (high energy collisions and shock heated gas). To carry out this research we will combine the Herschel/Planck data with that from other sources of data, providing observations at numerous wavelengths (< 41) across the spectral energy distribution, thus creating the DustPedia database. To maximise our spatial resolution and sensitivity to cosmic dust we limit our analysis to 4231 local galaxies (v < 3000 km/s) selected via their near infrared luminosity (stellar mass). To help us interpret the data we have developed a new physical model for dust (THEMIS), a new Bayesian method of fitting and interpreting spectral energy distributions (HerBIE) and a state-of-the-art Monte Carlo photon tracing radiative transfer model (SKIRT). We focus on the resolved stellar populations of one early- and four transition-type dwarf galaxies in the Sculptor group, with the aim to examine the potential presence of population gradients and place constraints on their mean metallicities. We use deep HST images to construct CMDs, from which we select stellar populations that trace different evolutionary phases in order to constrain their range of ages and metallicities, as well as to examine their spatial distribution. In addition, we use the resolved stars in the RGB in order to derive photometric metallicities. All studied dwarfs contain intermediate-age stars with ages of ~1Gyr and older as traced by the luminous asymptotic giant branch and red clump stars, while the transition-type dwarfs contain also stars younger than ~1Gyr as traced by a young main sequence and vertical red clump stars. Moreover, the spatial distribution of the stars that trace different evolutionary phases shows a population gradient in all transition-type dwarfs. The derived error-weighted mean metallicities, assuming purely old stellar populations, range from -1.5dex for ESO294-G010 to -1.9dex for Scl-dE1, and should be considered as lower limits to their true metallicities. Assuming intermediate-age stellar populations to dominate the dwarfs, we derive upper limits for the metallicities that are 0.3 to 0.2 dex higher than the metallicities derived assuming purely old populations. We discuss how photometric metallicity gradients are affected by the age-metallicity degeneracy, which prevents strong conclusions regarding their actual presence. Finally, the transition-type dwarfs lie beyond the virial radius of their closest bright galaxy, as also observed for the LG transition-type dwarfs. We report the serendipitous discovery of a peculiar main sequence in archived Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations of the young star cluster NGC 2011 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The bright part of this main sequence exhibits a prominent double, fork-like feature, as if it consists of twin main sequences, one of them being redder. The color-magnitude diagram, constructed from the stars found in the only available WFPC2 field of the cluster, is used to distinguish the stars according to their membership to each of these sequences and to study their spatial distribution. We find that there are two well distinguished populations in the sense that the redder main sequence is dominated by stars that belong to the main body of the cluster, while the stars of the bluer main sequence belong to the surrounding region. Providing that NGC 2011 is a verified binary cluster, with the second companion unfortunately not observed, and taking into account the general region where this cluster is located, we discuss the possible scenarios from both star formation, and early dynamical evolution point-of-view that might explain this unique discovery., Comment: Astrophysical Journal Letters, in press.
