Graphdiyne (GDY), a two-dimensional (2D) carbon material with diacetylenic linkages (-C≡C-C≡C-) structures, has attracted enormous attention in various fields. However, the controlled synthesis of GDY films is still challenging because of the low alkyne coupling efficiency and out-of-plane growth. Here, we employed a highly efficient Cu(II)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (Cu(II)-TMEDA) catalyst and constructed a superspreading liquid/liquid interface on a hydrogel for rapid and controllable synthesis of GDY thin films. GDY films with controllable thickness from 4 to 50 nm and large-scale uniform morphology can be prepared within 2 h at room temperature. The mechanism of growth was revealed to be a nucleation and in-plane extension process. Meanwhile, the as-grown GDY films showed excellent photothermal conversion efficiency, which induces the release of Cu(II) ions from the hydrogel and exhibits high efficiency in synergistic antibacteria.

In anisotropic two-dimensional materials, complex values of Raman tensors are necessary to explain the abnormal linearly polarized Raman spectra. In this work, we measured the helicity-changing Raman spectra of few-layer black phosphorus (BP) excited by circularly polarized light. We observed that the polarized Raman intensities of the

Lithium metal is the most promising anode for lithium batteries, but the growth of lithium dendrites leads to rapid attenuation of battery capacity and a series of safety problems during the plating/stripping process. Utilization of carbon materials for improving the Li metal anode stability represents a feasible strategy; particularly, the high affinity for lithium endows graphdiyne (GDY) with a promising capability for stabilizing Li metal anodes. Herein, vertically aligned GDY nanowalls (NWs) were uniformly grown on a copper foil, which allowed for dendrite-free, columnar deposition of lithium, desired for a stable Li metal anode. The highly lithiophilic GDY NWs afforded plentiful and evenly distributed active sites for Li nucleation as well as uniform distribution of Li-ion flux for Li growth, resulting in smooth, columnar Li deposition. The resultant Li metal electrode based on the Cu-GDY NWs was able to cycle stably for 500 cycles at 1 mA cm

Raman spectroscopy has been not only a technique for characterizing the composition and lattice structure of materials, but also a platform to explore the electron-photon and electron-phonon couplings. When excited by circularly polarized light, the Raman scattered light can carry a spin angular momentum ± ħ , which adds a new degree of freedom to study the Raman scattering process. This review explains the principles of the helicity of Raman scattered light excited by circular polarization, and introduces the recent advances in the fundamentals and applications of helicity-resolved Raman scattering in two dimensional (2D) materials, including the assignment of overlapped Raman modes, the characterization of exciton-phonon coupling and the application in chiral optics. We hope that this review will give a comprehensive understanding of the helicity selection rule in the Raman scattering process and inspire more exploration on the applications of the helicity of Raman scattered light.

The modulation of exciton-phonon coupling by strain greatly affects the optical and optoelectronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Although photoluminescence and optical absorption spectra have been used to characterize the overall change of exciton-phonon coupling under strain, there has been no effective method to distinguish the evolution of the major contributions of exciton-phonon coupling, that is, deformation potential (DP) and Frohlich interaction (FI). Here we report the direct monitoring of the evolution of DP and FI under strain in layered MoS2 using circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy. We found that the relative proportions of DP and FI can be well evaluated by the circular polarization ratio of the E2g1 mode for strained MoS2. Further, we demonstrated that the strain control of DP and FI in MoS2 is dominated by the excitonic effect. Our method can be extended to other 2D semiconductors and would be helpful for manipulating exciton-phonon couplings by strain.

The variation of interlayer coupling can greatly affect the bandstructure of few layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), for instance, transition of indirect-to-direct bandgap and vice versa, which is correlated with the charge carrier and optical density. However, methods that can modulate the coupling strength in a controllable way are still lacking. Here, we report a fluidic dynamic strategy to tune the interlayer coupling of folded bi-layer MoS2. By controlling the flow direction and particle size of the fluid, mono-layer MoS2 can be folded into bi-layer with a controlled folding direction for designated twist angles as well as tunable interlayer coupling. Compared with normally folded bi-layer MoS2, the photoluminescence (PL) peak of the direct-bandgap transition for folded bi-layer MoS2 by fluid flow is weakened accompanied with the re-appearance of indirect-bandgap transition peak. Besides, the fluid flow creates a clear trajectory on the folded MoS2, exhibiting various degrees of interlayer coupling along it. Field-effect transistors (FETs) were further fabricated on tunably coupled folded-bi-layers, proving that the bandstructure and electrical property is strongly correlated with the degree of interlayer coupling. This fluidic dynamic strategy can be extended to other TMDs on any substrate, and together with its excellent capability in controlled interlayer coupling, it will provide a new way for the development of TMDs optoelectronics.

Raman spectroscopy is a fast and nondestructive characterization technique, which has been widely used for the characterization of the composition and structure information of various materials. The symmetry-dependent Raman tensor allows the detection of crystallographic orientation of materials by using polarization information. In this Perspective, we discuss polarized Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool for determination of the crystallographic orientation of various materials. First, we introduce the basic principles of polarized Raman spectroscopy and the corresponding experimental setups; the determination of crystallographic orientation of two-dimensional (2D) materials with in-plane isotropy and in-plane anisotropy using linearly polarized Raman scattering are then discussed. Furthermore, we discuss that using circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy, the azimuthal angle of materials in three dimensions (3D) can be characterized. In the final section, we show that the orientation distribution of nanomaterial assemblies can be measured using polarized Raman spectroscopy by introducing the orientation distribution function.

Summary Two-dimensional (2D) graphdiyne (GDY) is a promising floating-gate material for flexible optoelectronic flash memory owing to its fascinating electrical and optical properties. However, research in GDY-based flash memory is still in its infancy owing to the huge challenge in the synthesis of large-area and ultrathin GDY films with high quality and uniformity. Here, an electric double-layer-confined strategy is proposed to synthesize a wafer-scale GDY film with thickness of 1 nm. Then, a two-terminal top-floating-gated optoelectronic memory with multibit storage capability is investigated using GDY as a photoresponsive top-floating gate. Benefiting from the excellent charge storage capability and high photoresponse of GDY, this device exhibits over 256 distinct storage levels (8 bits) with signal-to-noise ratios larger than 100. Moreover, the fully 2D material and two-terminal architecture endows the device with robust bending stability for over 1,000 bending circles, paving the way to develop wearable electronics.

Summary Recently, various synthetic methods have been developed to synthesize graphdiyne (GDY) in the aspect of controlled layer and different morphologies. The ideal GDY should have a large crystal domain size with only one atomic layer and possess excellent mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic intrinsic properties. However, there is still a gap between the reality and ideality on the road to perfect GDY, which results from the synthetic challenges from the terminal alkynes coupling efficiencies, side reactions, free rotation of carbon-carbon single bond between the diacetylenic linkages, small domain size, defects, and the uncontrollability of thickness. In this review, we will summarize the advances of synthetic methodology in improving the quality and yield of GDY from the perspective of fundamental acetylenic coupling reactions. We aim to stimulate the interest of researchers working in controlled synthesis and broaden application fields of GDY.

Mixed dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures constructed by one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit extra degree of freedom to modulate the electronic and optical properties due to the combination of different dimensionalities. The charge transfer at the interface between 1D and 2D materials plays a crucial role in the optoelectronic properties and performance of the heterostructure-based devices. Here, we stacked single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on monolayer WS2 for a mixed dimensional vdW heterostructure, and investigated the local modulation of excitions and trions in WS2 by SWNTs. Different directions of charge transfer between SWNTs and WS2 are evidenced by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of WS2. The PL intensity can be either enhanced or weakened by individual SWNTs. In our work, the PL intensity of WS2 is enhanced and the exciton peak position heterostructure is red-shifted about 3 meV due to the charge transfer from WS2 to an individual SWNT (SWNT#1). The change of PL by another SWNT (SWNT#2) can not be well-resolved in far-field, but scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) measurements show that the PL intensity of WS2 is weakened by the SWNT. The peak position of exciton is blue-shifted by ~ 1 meV while that of trion is redshifted by ~ 1 meV due to the charge transfer from the SWNT to WS2. These results give insight into the charge transfer at the interface of SWNT/WS2 heterostructure, and can be useful for design of optoelectronic devices based on mixed dimensional vdW heterostructures.

Since double resonance Raman (DRR) spectra are laser-energy dependent, the first-principles calculations of DRR for two-dimensional materials are challenging. Here, the DRR spectrum of monolayer MoTe$_2$ is calculated by home-made program, in which we combine {\em ab-initio} density-functional-theory calculations with the electron-phonon Wannier (EPW) method. Within the fourth-order perturbation theory, we are able to quantify not only the electron-photon matrix elements within the dipole approximation, but also the electron-phonon matrix elements using the Wannier functions. The reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental Raman spectra is achieved, in which we reproduce some distinctive features of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) from graphene (for example, the dominant intervalley process involving an electron or a hole). Furthermore, we perform an analysis of the possible DRR modes over the Brillouin zone, highlighting the role of low-symmetry points. Graphdiyne (GDY) has been considered as an appealing anode candidate for K-ion storage since its triangular pore channel, alkyne-rich structure, and large interlayer spacing would endow it with abundant active sites and ideal diffusion paths for K-ions. Nevertheless, the low surface area and disordered structure of bulk GDY typically lead to unsatisfied K storage performance. Herein, we have designed a GDY/graphene/GDY (GDY/Gr/GDY) sandwiched architecture affording a high surface area and fine quality throughout a van der Waals epitaxy strategy. As tested in a half-cell configuration, the GDY/Gr/GDY electrode exhibits better capacity output, rate capability, and cyclic stability as compared to the bare GDY counterpart.

Quantitative analysis is a demanding challenge for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). A number of methods have been developed using different SERS-active substrates for quantitative detection of certain species. However, for a target analyte that is mixed with other molecules, the competitive adsorption of other molecules on the SERS substrate becomes the major disturbance to quantitative analysis or even qualitative detection. Whether it is possible to quantitatively detect a single analyte in a mixture of molecules using SERS has remained unclear. In this work, we explored the possibility of quantitative detection of multiple analytes by using graphene-based SERS (G-SERS). Graphene provides an atomically flat surface for homogeneous adsorption of molecules, and its own Raman scattering intensity can serve as internal standard in SERS for quantitative analysis. Our results show that the adsorption constants, the concentration and the Raman scattering cross sections of competing species are the most important factors to be considered. The findings could be helpful for quantitative analysis of target analyte in practical complex systems.

The scalable growth of wafer-sized single-crystal graphene in an energy-efficient manner and compatible with wafer process is critical for the killer applications of graphene in high-performance electronics and optoelectronics. Here, ultrafast epitaxial growth of single-crystal graphene wafers is realized on single-crystal Cu90Ni10(1 1 1) thin films fabricated by a tailored two-step magnetron sputtering and recrystallization process. The minor nickel (Ni) content greatly enhances the catalytic activity of Cu, rendering the growth of a 4 in. single-crystal monolayer graphene wafer in 10 min on Cu90Ni10(1 1 1), 50 folds faster than graphene growth on Cu(1 1 1). Through the carbon isotope labeling experiments, graphene growth on Cu90Ni10(1 1 1) is proved to be exclusively surface-reaction dominated, which is ascribed to the Cu surface enrichment in the CuNi alloy, as indicated by element in-depth profile. One of the best benefits of our protocol is the compatibility with wafer process and excellent scalability. A pilot-scale chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system is designed and built for the mass production of single-crystal graphene wafers, with productivity of 25 pieces in one process cycle. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of single-crystal graphene in electrically controlled liquid-crystal microlens arrays (LCMLA), which exhibit highly tunable focal lengths near 2 mm under small driving voltages. By integration of the graphene based LCMLA and a CMOS sensor, a prototype camera is proposed that is available for simultaneous light-field and light intensity imaging. The single-crystal graphene wafers could hold great promising for high-performance electronics and optoelectronics that are compatible with wafer process.

Molecular chirality transfer and amplification is at the heart of the fundamental understanding of chiral origin and fabrication of artificial chiral materials. We investigate here the nonlinear amplification effect in the chiral transfer from small molecules to assembled plasmonic nanoparticles. Our results show clearly a recognizable nonlinear behavior of the electronic and plasmonic circular dichroism activities, demonstrating the validity of the "majority-rules" principle operating in both the three-dimensional interface-confined molecularly chiral environment and the assembled plasmonic nanoparticles. Such twin "majority-rules" effects from the self-assembled organic-inorganic nanocomposite system have not been reported previously. By establishing a direct correlation between the dynamic template of the molecularly chiral environment and the nonlinear chiral amplification in the nanoparticle assemblies, this study may provide an insightful understanding of the hierarchical and cooperative chiral information transfer from molecular levels to nanoscales.

We propose a technique of Raman spectroscopy to characterize the excitonic nature and to evaluate the relative contribution of the two kinds of electron/exciton-phonon interactions that are observed in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). In the TMDCs, the electron/exciton-phonon interactions mainly originate from the deformation potential (DP) or the Frohlich interaction (FI) which give the mutually different Raman tensors. Using a circularly polarized light, the relative proportion of the DP and the FI can be defined by the ratio of helicity-polarized intensity that is observed by MoS2. By this analysis, we show that the excitonic FI interaction gradually increases with decreasing temperature, contributes equally to DP at ∼230 K, and dominates at lower temperatures. The excitonic effect in the Raman spectra is confirmed by modulating the dielectric environment for the exciton and by changing the laser power.

Mg and its alloys generally exhibit the poor corrosion and wear resistances, which greatly limits their industrial applications. Inspired from an ordered layered structure within natural nacre, the homogeneous reduced graphene oxide/poly (vinyl alcohol) (RGO/PVA) coating is successfully fabricated on Mg alloy surface in the current study, through a facile spin-assisted layer-by-layer assembly (SA-LBL) technology. The hybrid hydrogen/covalent bond networks form between PVA chains and RGO sheets, resulting in a compact lamellar “bricks-and-mortar” structure. The microstructure of hybrid coating is strongly influenced by the cross-linking effect of PVA molecule, whose suitable content is beneficial to generating the densely stacked lamellar coating with excellent binding strength and reduced intrinsic defects, which can significantly improve its corrosion resistance. And the water molecules can hardly diffuse into the hybrid coating, leading to a long-term stability of samples in aqueous solution, ethanol and N, N-dimethylformamide. Besides, the high hardness and good lubricant effect of RGO sheets confer the hybrid coatings outstanding wear-resistant properties. Therefore, the bio-inspired RGO coating with a certain amount of PVA allows it to have a superior barrier effect and maintain the lubrication, which can provide an integrated protection for the corrosion and wear behaviors of Mg alloy.

Anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit lattice-orientation dependent optical and electrical properties. Carriers doping of such materials has been used to modulate their energy band structures for opto-electronic applications. Herein, we show that by stacking monolayer rhenium disulfide (ReS2) on a flat gold film, the electrons doping in ReS2 can affect the in-plane anisotropic Raman enhancement of molecules adsorbed on ReS2. The change of enhancement factor and the degree of anisotropy in enhancement with layer number are sensitively dependent on the doping level of ReS2 by gold, which is further confirmed by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) measurements. These findings could open an avenue for probing anisotropic electronic interactions between molecules and 2D materials with low symmetry using Raman enhancement effect.

Graphene has received abundant attentions in many applications because of its extraordinary properties. Liquid-phase exfoliation is one of the most important methods to obtain graphene from graphite. However, due to strong van der Waals interaction force, it is still extremely challenging to further improve the exfoliation efficiency. Here we report that by carrying out reductions with the oxygenic functional groups on the pristine graphite edges using hydrazine hydrate and hydrogen at 800 °C as a pretreatment approach, the exfoliation efficiency can be improved by ∼37% using a lithium-assisted liquid-phase exfoliation approach. The change of the functional groups is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The graphene sheets show high degree of structural integrity and few defects. A thin film is prepared from the exfoliated graphene by vacuum assisted filtration and treated by annealing and mechanical compression. The graphene thin film shows a high thermal conductivity of 1707 W m−1 K−1, which is superior to that of common metal materials, such as Cu and Al.

We study the roles of graphene acting as a buffer layer for growth of an AlN film on a sapphire substrate. Graphene can reduce the density of AlN nuclei but increase the growth rate for an individual nucleus at the initial growth stage. This can lead to the reduction of threading dislocations evolved at the coalescence boundaries. The graphene interlayer also weakens the interaction between AlN and sapphire and accommodates their large mismatch in the lattice and thermal expansion coefficients; thus, the compressive strain in AlN and the tensile strain in sapphire are largely relaxed. The effective relaxation of strain further leads to a low density of defects in the AlN films. These findings reveal the roles of graphene in III-nitride growth and offer valuable insights into the efficient applications of graphene in the light-emitting diode industry.

Manipulating the polarization of light at the nanoscale is essential for the development of nano-optical devices. Owing to its corrugated honeycomb structure, two-dimensional (2D) layered black phosphorus (BP) exhibits outstanding in-plane optical anisotropy with distinct linear dichroism and optical birefringence in the visible region, which are superior characteristics for ultrathin polarizing optics. Herein, taking advantage of polarized Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that layered BP with a nanometer thickness can remarkably alter the polarization state of a linearly-polarized laser and behave as an ultrathin optical polarization element in a BP-Bi2Se3 stacking structure by inducing the exceptionally polarized Raman scattering of isotropic Bi2Se3. Our findings provide a promising alternative for designing novel polarization optics based on 2D anisotropic materials, which can be easily integrated in microsized all-optical and optoelectronic devices.

Controlled synthesis of structurally anisotropic rhenium diselenide (ReSe2) with macroscopically uniform and strictly monolayer thickness as well as tunable domain shape/size is of great interest for electronics-, optoelectronics-, and electrocatalysis-related applications. Herein, we describe the controlled synthesis of uniform monolayer ReSe2 flakes with variable morphology (sunflower- or truncated-triangle-shaped) on SiO2/Si substrates using different ambient-pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) setups. The prepared polycrystalline ReSe2 flakes were transferred intact onto Au foil electrodes and tested for activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Interestingly, compared to the compact truncated-triangle-shaped ReSe2 flakes, their edge-abundant sunflower-shaped counterparts exhibited superior electrocatalytic HER activity, featuring a relatively low Tafel slope of ∼76 mV/dec and an exchange current density of 10.5 μA/cm2. Thus, our work demonstrates that CVD-grown ReSe2 is a promising two-dimensional anisotropic material for applications in the electrocatalytic HER.

Rhenium diselenide (ReSe2) has recently garnered great research interest due to its distorted 1T structure, anisotropic physical properties, and applications in polarization-sensitive photodetectors. However, ReSe2 synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is usually a multilayer/polycrystalline material containing numerous grain boundaries, thereby hindering its further applications. Here we describe the direct CVD growth of high-quality monolayer ReSe2 single crystals with a parallelogram shape arising from its anisotropic structure on a gold foil substrate. In particular, we use low-energy electron microscopy/diffraction combined with scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to determine the atomic-scale structure, domain orientation/boundaries, and band features of monolayer ReSe2 flakes grown directly on gold foils. This work may open new opportunities for the direct synthesis and in situ characterization of CVD-grown monolayer ReSe2. Improving the synthesis of crystalline monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides requires insight into domain and boundary structures. Here, the authors produce monolayer rhenium diselenide by chemical vapour deposition onto gold foil, allowing in situ analysis of domain and defect structure.

Solar evaporation, which enables water purification without consuming fossil fuels, has been considered the most promising strategy to address global scarcity of drinkable water. However, the suboptimal structure and composition designs still result in a trade-off between photothermal conversion, water transport, and tolerance to harsh environments. Here, an ultrastable amorphous Ta2 O5 /C nanocomposite is designed with a hollow multishelled structure (HoMS) for solar evaporation. This HoMS results in highly efficient photoabsorption and photothermal conversion, as well as a decrease of the actual water evaporation enthalpy. A superfast evaporation speed of 4.02 kg m-2 h-1 is achieved. More importantly, a World Health Organization standard drinkable water can be achieved from seawater, heavy-metal- and bacteria-containing water, and even from extremely acidic/alkaline or radioactive water sources. Notably, the concentration of pseudovirus SC2-P can be decreased by 6 orders of magnitude after evaporation.

Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have attracted tremendous attention and led to a prosperous development in both fundamental investigation and device applications in various fields, such as nanoelectronics, flexible devices, sustainable energy and catalysts. The precise characterization of the structure and properties of 2D materials is in urgent need. Raman scattering spectroscopy is one of the most popular characterization tools that is convenient, rapid and non-invasive. It provides information on both the lattice structure from the frequency of phonon modes and the electronic band structure through the intensity due to electronic resonance Raman scattering. Although a few morphological characterization tools can image 2D materials with atomic resolution, Raman scattering measurements are more tolerant to the conditions of sample preparation such as the substrate and less technically demanding, and have been one of the routine tools for the characterization of 2D materials. In this review, we focus on the characterization of 2D materials using Raman scattering spectroscopy, in particular, the revealing of differences from primitive 2D materials, such as defects, doping effects, van der Waals heterostructures and the interaction with molecules. The characteristic Raman features of such differences and the corresponding interpretation will be discussed. We hope that this review will be useful for wide research communities of materials, physics, chemistry and engineering.

Towards future applications, like nanoelectronic devices, techniques to obtain single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with specific electronic types (semiconducting or metallic ones) are urgently required. Herein, we developed a rational approach for the preferential etching of either metallic or semiconducting SWNTs assisted by selective adsorption of molecules onto the corresponding SWNTs. The adsorbed molecules were easily oxidized under a temperature below the threshold for the etching of SWNTs, and the heat generated during oxidation could accelerate the etching process of nearby SWNTs. Based on this design, we could obtain semiconducting-enriched or metallic-enriched SWNT arrays with a purity of 93% and 86% assisted by the adsorption of different molecules. Further in-situ observation by polarized optical microscope ensured the acceleration of the etching process of SWNTs adsorbed by the molecular igniters. Our method combines the advantages of solution separation (high selectivity and diversity) and gas-phase etching (clean and high efficiency), providing more feasibility in obtaining SWNT horizontal arrays with uniform properties.

As gas-phase etching has become an important method to obtain single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with specific electronic structures, numerous etchants were studied in the past decades. However, the understanding of the dynamic process as well as the etching state is still limited. Herein, we investigated the etching process of SWCNTs at the level of the individual tube in real time using an improved polarized optical microscope equipped with a miniature chemical vapor deposition (CVD) system. Experiments showed a universal etching behavior in a SWCNT oxidation process under different etchants (O2, H2O, and CO2), that is, the random appearance of etching sites and the self-terminating phenomenon. We built a new etching model at the level of the individual tubes to describe the etching rate. Based on this model, a new constant R, the ratio of etching rates between metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs, was defined to describe the etching selectivity. Architectural windows are a major cause of thermal discomfort as the inner glazing during cold days can be several degrees colder than the indoor air. Mitigating this, the indoor temperature has to be increased, leading to unavoidable thermal losses. Here we present solar thermal surfaces based on complex nanoplasmonic antennas that can raise the temperature of window glazing by up to 8 K upon solar irradiation while transmitting light with a color rendering index of 98.76. The nanoantennas are directional, can be tuned to absorb in different spectral ranges, and possess a structural integrity that is not substrate-dependent, and thus they open up for application on a broad range of surfaces. © 2017 American Chemical Society.
