Rock burst disaster has become a major safety problem in underground coal mining worldwide. Using the true triaxial electro-hydraulic servo loading test system, the stress-strain law, failure characteristics and acoustic emission activity law of coal-rock combination, deep coal body and shallow coal body with three different stress types are studied. The strength criterion relationship of deep and shallow coal bodies is established, the energy release characteristics of deep coal body are analyzed, and the instability mechanism of deep coal body is revealed. The results show that the coal samples with different stress types are affected by the stress environment and structural differences. The shallow coal samples of the roadway rib and the coal-rock combination samples of the roadway rib under high σ2 confining pressure all produce rapid stress drop after the peak stress, and the brittle failure and impact are strong. In the failure mechanism, the shallow coal sample of the roadway is mainly controlled by the tensile-shear coupling mechanism. The deep coal sample of the roadway is mainly controlled by the shear mechanism. The area near the constraint surface and the free surface of the coal-rock combination sample is controlled by the shear and tension-shear coupling mechanism respectively. Under the condition of same confining pressure, the shallow coal body of the roadway is more likely to be destroyed. Based on the source of the impact energy release of the roadway coal rib, the instability model of the coal body in the deep roadway is established, and the instability mechanism of the coal body in the deep roadway is revealed.

Abstract Since accidents such as roof caving, rock fragmentation, and severe deformation are particularly likely to occur during roadway excavation in soft and thick coal seams, grasping the range and distribution of deformation and fracturing of surrounding rock is of crucial for evaluating roadway stability and optimizing support design in such coal seams. In this study, based on the stress paths encountered during roadway excavation, true triaxial loading and unloading tests were carried out on soft coal, and the deformation and strength evolutions of soft coal under different intermediate principal stress conditions were analyzed. The test results show that the stress–strain relationship in the pre-peak plasticity-strengthening and post-peak plasticity-weakening stages follows a quadratic function, and the strengeth evolution conforms to the Mogi–Coulomb criterion. Moreover, analytical solutions for the displacement of surrounding rock, the radius of the broken zone, and the radius of the plastic zone of soft-coal roadways under excavation stress paths were derived after taking the nonlinear hardening and softening characteristics of the strain of soft coal, the Mogi–Coulomb criterion, the intermediate principal stress, and the dilatancy characteristics of surrounding rock into comprehensive consideration. Finally, in accordance with a practical engineering case, the influences of the intermediate principal stress coefficient, the lateral pressure coefficient, and the support force on the deformation and failure characteristics of the soft-coal roadway were analyzed. The analysis reveals that an increase in intermediate principal stress aggravates the deformation of surrounding rock and enlarges the plastic and broken zones; variations in the lateral pressure coefficient alter the shape of the broken zone and the distribution of surface displacement; and an increase in the support force effectively reduces the plastic zone, broken zone, and surface displacement of the roadway. The research results can provide valuable theoretical basis for the stability evaluation and support design of soft-coal roadways.

Abstract The whale optimization algorithm has received much attention since its introduction due to its outstanding performance. However, like other algorithms, the whale optimization algorithm still suffers from some classical problems. To address the issues of slow convergence, low optimization precision, and susceptibility to local convergence in the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Defining the optimization behavior of whale individuals as quantum mechanical behavior, a whale optimization algorithm based on atom-like structure differential evolution (WOAAD) is proposed. Enhancing the spiral update mechanism by introducing a sine strategy guided by the electron orbital center. Improving the random-walk foraging mechanism by applying mutation operations to both the electron orbital center and random individuals. Performing crossover operations between the newly generated individuals from the improved mechanisms and random dimensions, followed by a selection process to retain superior individuals. This accelerates algorithm convergence, enhances optimization precision, and prevents the algorithm from falling into local convergence. Finally, implementing a scouting bee strategy, where whale individuals progressively increase the number of optimization failures within a limited parameter L. When a threshold is reached, random initialization is carried out to enhance population diversity. Conducting simulation experiments to compare the improved algorithm with the whale optimization algorithm, other optimization algorithms, and other enhanced whale optimization algorithms. The experimental results indicate that the improved algorithm significantly accelerates convergence, enhances optimization precision, and prevents the algorithm from falling into local convergence. Applying the improved algorithm to five engineering design problems, the experimental results demonstrate that the improved algorithm exhibits good applicability.

To understand the stability of deep underground engineering rocks at high temperatures, it is necessary to conduct comprehensive tests on the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this study, a series of true triaxial tests (TTT) were conducted on sandstones using a self-developed true triaxial testing system combined with XRD, FE-SEM and CT analyses. The study systematically examined the microstructural characteristics, physical phase behavior, deformation properties and internal fracture development of the sandstone before and after heat treatment. The results of the study show that sandstone has temperature-dependent true triaxial mechanical properties after heat treatment. The stress-strain characteristic curves of the post-peak portion from room temperature to 800 °C show a significant stress-reducing segment, indicating the presence of brittle behavior. In addition, when the temperature exceeds 1000 °C, the sandstone exhibits brittle-ductile change characteristics, with a peak stress threshold observed at 800 °C. Notably, the peak stresses corresponding to 800 °C increased by 84.5 %, 63.1 %, 47 %, and 49.8 %, respectively, compared with the room temperature intermediate principal stresses(IPS) ranging from 20 MPa to 50 MPa, respectively. Importantly, the linear Mogi-Coulomb criterion remains valid for the peak strength of the high-temperature sandstone, while the internal fracture damage pattern of the specimens shows an inverted ''Y'' or inverted ''W'' configuration. The internal fracture network of rock samples above 800 °C is more complex. Intergranular crack is the main form of microcracking. This experimental study on the mechanical properties of sandstone under the combined effects of high temperature and real triaxial stresses provides valuable guidance for the selection of sandstone parameters and safety evaluation of coal underground gasification roofs.

Abstract In this study, a series of true triaxial loading tests were carried out on coal-measure sandstone after high temperature treatment by using a self-developed true triaxial test system combined with acoustic emission (AE) monitoring, and the mass loss, deformation characteristics and loss failure mode of sandstone before and after heat treatment were systematically studied. It is found that the true triaxial mechanical properties of sandstone after high temperature treatment are closely related to temperature, and the peak strength, maximum principal strain, volume strain, minimum fracture angle and elastic modulus, which all showed bimodal changes, and 800 °C is the threshold temperature of the first four parameters. The transition temperature of the elastic modulus is 400 °C. It is found that the test results of true triaxial high temperature sandstone are in good agreement with the existing true triaxial theory and test results. The failure forms of the samples at different temperatures show inverted “Y” or inverted “N” shapes. Shear failure occurs when the temperature is below 400 °C, and shear-tension failure occurs when the temperature is above 600 °C. At the same time, it is found that the AE signal has four periods, namely the quiet period, growth period, explosion period and decline period. The number of AE events corresponds to the deviatoric stress interval well. Experimental study of the mechanical properties of sandstone under the coupling effect of high temperature and true triaxial stress has guiding significance for the parameter selection and safety evaluation of roof sandstone in underground coal gasification.

To address the shortcomings of the sine cosine algorithm such as the low search accuracy, slow convergence speed, and easily falling into local optimality, a sine cosine algorithm for elite individual collaborative search was proposed. Firstly, tent chaotic mapping was used to initialize the population and the hyperbolic tangent function was applied non-linearly to adjust the parameters of the sine cosine algorithm, which enhanced the uniformity of population distribution and balanced the global exploration and local exploitation ability. Secondly, the search method of the sine cosine algorithm was improved by combining the search strategy of the sine cosine algorithm, the m-neighborhood locally optimal individual-guided search strategy, and the global optimal individual-guided search strategy, and, then, the three search strategies were executed alternately, which achieved collaboration, improved the convergence accuracy, and prevented the algorithm from falling into local optima. Finally, a greedy selection strategy was employed to select the best individuals for the population, which accelerated the convergence speed of the sine cosine algorithm. The simulation results illustrated that the sine cosine algorithm for elite individual collaborative search demonstrated a better optimization performance than the sine cosine algorithm, the other improved sine cosine algorithms, the other chaos-based algorithms, and other intelligent optimization algorithms. In addition, the feasibility and applicability of the sine cosine algorithm for elite individual collaborative search were further demonstrated by two mechanical optimization design experiments.

The computational performance requirements of space payloads are constantly increasing, and the redevelopment of space-grade processors requires a significant amount of time and is costly. This study investigates performance evaluation benchmarks for processors designed for various application scenarios. It also constructs benchmark modules and typical space application benchmarks specifically tailored for the space domain. Furthermore, the study systematically evaluates and analyzes the performance of NVIDIA Jetson AGX Xavier platform and Loongson platforms to identify processors that are suitable for space missions. The experimental results of the evaluation demonstrate that Jetson AGX Xavier performs exceptionally well and consumes less power during dense computations. The Loongson platform can achieve 80% of Xavier’s performance in certain parallel optimized computations, surpassing Xavier’s performance at the expense of higher power consumption.

The mining environment of thin coal seam working faces is generally harsh, the labor intensity is high, and the production efficiency is low. Previous studies have shown that thin coal seam mining finds it difficult to follow machines, does not have complete sets of equipment, has a low degree of automation, and has difficult system co-control, which easily causes production safety accidents. In order to effectively solve the problems existing in thin coal seam mining, Binhu Coal Mine has established intelligent fully mechanized mining and actively explored automatic coal cutting, automatic support following, and intelligent control. The combination of an SAC electro-hydraulic control system and SAP pumping station control system has been applied in 16,108 intelligent fully mechanized coal mining faces, which realizes the automatic following of underground support and the control of adjacent support, partition support, and group operation; the automatic coal cutting of the shearer is realized by editing the automatic coal-cutting state of the shearer and adjusting the automatic parameters. A centralized control center is set up, which realizes the remote control and one-button start–stop of working face equipment. Through a comparative analysis of 16,108 intelligent fully mechanized mining faces and traditional fully mechanized mining faces, it is found that intelligent fully mechanized mining faces have obvious advantages in terms of equipment maintenance, equipment operation mode, and working face efficiency, which improve the equipment and technical mining level of thin coal seam. The application of intelligent mining in Binhu Coal Mine has a great and far-reaching impact on the development of thin coal seam mining technology in China.

Taking the roadway peripheral rock anchoring unit as the research object, the rock compression test containing the anchor solid was carried out to analyze the influence of the degree of peripheral rock fragmentation and the anchor support method on the mechanical properties of the rock body. The test results showed that the smaller the size of the structural surface, the more a greater number of anchor rods were needed, which in turn provided better support. With the increase in the size of the structural surface, the uniaxial compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the specimen showed a gradual decrease. Numerical tests of the uniaxial compression of rock containing cohesive units showed that the deformation of the specimen near the anchor bar was significantly reduced, while the main rupture surface was blocked, and an obvious reinforcement zone was formed near the anchor bar. Under the double-anchor condition, the anchor tension stress was more obvious, the reinforcement zone was wider, and the rock rupture surface was strongly blocked, all of which made its reinforcement effect the more obvious. This double-anchor condition showed that the anchoring effect of the anchor rods on the specimens was reflected in two aspects of reinforcement and crack stopping. The denser the anchor rods, the wider the reinforcement zone and hence the more likely that the superposition effect will occur, which allowed the anchor rods to play a greater supporting role in stabilizing the rock. The research results can provide a theoretical basis for the design of anchor support and early warning prediction of destabilization damage in the fractured surrounding rock of coal mine roadways.

According to the reservoir characteristics and the current situation of CO2 utilization during thermal recovery in an unconsolidated sandstone heavy oil reservoir, the mechanism and law of porosity and permeability change in an unconsolidated sandstone heavy oil reservoir during CO2+steam and CO2+steam+ sodium alpha-olefin sulfonate (AOS) injection were studied by combining a static monomineral water-rock reaction and a dynamic polymineral sand pack displacement experiment. In the static water-rock reaction between CO2 and monomineral of reservoir rock, the dissolution degree of monomineral at 200°C is greater than that at 100°C and 300°C, and the order of mineral dissolution is illite, montmorillonite, kaolinite, and quartz. Besides, the dissolution rate of single rock minerals decreased significantly in the system of CO2 with AOS. In the polymineral sand pack displacement experiment, the porosity gradually decreases by CO2 multicomponent thermal fluid, and the permeability first decreases and then increases by CO2 multicomponent thermal fluid, but the permeability change is only about 0.5% by CO2+steam+ AOS, which is mainly attributed to the adsorption of AOS on the rock surface, and it is confirmed in the infrared spectrum of unconsolidated sand after displacement. This also shows that CO2+steam+AOS can stabilize the rock skeleton structure of the reservoir and prevent the deterioration of heterogeneity in the subsequent development of thermal recovery of heavy oil reservoirs; therefore, the CO2 multicomponent thermal fluid with chemical agents can improve the damage of a single CO2 thermal fluid to the reservoir.

The background and scientific objectives of the Mars Climate Station (MCS) for Tianwen-1 are introduced, accompanied by a comparative review of the status of related meteorological observation missions and of advanced sensing technologies. As one of the China Tianwen-1 Mission’s principal scientific payloads, the MCS contains four measurement sensors and one electronic processing unit that are specially designed to measure local temperature, pressure, wind, and sound on the Martian surface. The MCS’s measurement principles, technical schemes, ground calibration techniques, and adaptability evaluation to the Mars surface environment of MCS are introduced in details. The conclusion presents measurement performance specifications of the MCS, based on ground test results, that will provide guidance to future research based on data from the Tianwen-1 and later Mars missions.

This study investigates the law of stress field and fracture field of the surrounding rock at the trick rise of the mining area affected by strong mining. It is found that as the working face continues to approach, large-scale cracks occur in the surrounding rock on the track rise. In particular, when the working face crosses the track rise, the equivalent stress τoct concentration area expands, gradually intersecting with the surrounding rock concentration area of the roadway. It indicates that the working face advancement caused a dramatic change in the stress field of the roadway envelope, which will have an immediate adverse effect on the track rise. With comprehensive support costs, economic efficiency, and other factors, the working face will no longer cross the track rise, and the stopping line is roughly controlled at -20 m so that the track rise can serve other working faces for a long time. The reinforcement support scheme of “anchor mesh spray + grouting anchor” is proposed for the key areas such as arch shoulder. Through the analysis of the field monitoring of the roadway surface displacement, the deformation of the roadway surrounding rock showed a change trend of increasing first and then stabilizing with time, which indicates that the support effect was good and greatly improved the stability and safety of the roadway.

Based on the thermodynamic and elastodynamic theories, the controlling equation of temperature-stress coupling action on rocks containing random damage units is established by combining the Mogi-Coulomb damage criterion. And the numerical calculation model of combustion cavity expansion under temperature-stress coupling condition is established by using ABAQUS secondary development program. The fracture field evolution law during the expansion of the gasification cavity was studied under two conditions: perpendicular to (condition 1) and along the intermediate principal stress (condition 2). It is found that under the condition 1, the gasification cavity gradually forms a smaller fracture circle, while the surrounding rock at the floor of the gasification cavity generates a wide range of equivalent damage areas under the condition 2, which is unfavorable for practical engineering. The condition 1 deployment scheme is more practical in terms of the degree of rupture and the subsequent gasification process. The gasification cavity is obviously affected by the horizontal stress. When the horizontal stress is small, the stability of the surrounding rock is seriously damaged. It is necessary to fully consider the influence of in situ stress in the layout of the gasification cavity; at the same time, measures are added to the process to reduce the degree of rupture of the surrounding rock. The evolution law of the temperature field and rupture field of the surrounding pressure in the combustion cavity during the whole process of UCG was numerically simulated. The floor rupture zone develops gradually with the advancement of the working face of the combustion cavity, and deeper rupture zones appear in several areas, which need special attention in the engineering.

During fixed orthodontic treatment, white spot lesions are prevalent issues associated with cariogenic bacteria. This study aims to construct an orthodontic adhesive containing nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate-polydopamine-Ag (NPA) fillers to combat white spot lesions. The NPA fillers were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The biocompatibility of the fillers was evaluated. A colony counting test evaluated the antibacterial property of the fillers against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). NPA fillers were mixed with orthodontic adhesive (Transbond XT) at different weight ratios (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 wt.%). The shear bond strength and antibacterial properties were then further investigated. The results showed that NPA was prepared successfully, with good antibacterial properties. The cell survival rate of all groups of fillers was higher than 70%, showing good biocompatibility. Moreover, the shear bond strength of the orthodontic adhesive with 0.2 wt.% NPA fillers was 11.89 ± 1.27 MPa, meeting the minimal clinical bond strength requirements of 7.8 MPa. Furthermore, the orthodontic adhesive resin blocks and the extract displayed good antibacterial properties, with the number of colonies decreasing significantly (p < 0.001). Taken together, we think that an orthodontic adhesive with NPA may have a good application potential for the prevention and treatment of white spot lesions.

Compared with conventional reservoirs, shale gas reservoirs usually have no natural productivity or lower productivity, and the rate of production decline is high in the later stage. The production of shale gas can be effectively improved by designing reasonably or fracturing. Therefore, it is critical for shale gas reservoir to study how to design proper parameters to make it effectively developed. Based on data of block-A region of the Zhejiang gas field, considering the contribution of rock compression to the production, the productivity formula of horizontal well at different seepage stages is deduced. Data from block-A are verified by orthogonal experiment, including gas reservoir parameters and engineering parameters. The results show that the order of reservoir parameters that affect the development of shale gas is as follows: Langmuir pressure, diffusion coefficient, cross flow coefficient, and Langmuir volume; the order of engineering parameters that affect the development of shale gas is as follows: number of fractures, horizontal section length, production pressure, fractures length, row spacing, and well spacing. The research results have been applied to the Zhejiang gas field. The initial rate of decline after adjustment is reduced by 26.08% and production increases by 17.06% after stabilization compared to wells without adjustment parameters. The research has important reference significance for the efficient development of similar gas reservoirs.

Considering the harsh environment of deep, fully mechanized working faces and the acutely imbalanced time distribution among excavation, support and anchoring, this paper designed a new type of highly adaptable advance support for fully mechanized roadways that boasts high adaptability, great support strength and a large working space. Firstly, the structure composition and working principle of the advance support were introduced. The structures and mechanical characteristics were then emphatically discussed. Subsequently, with the geological conditions of the 8224-machine roadway in the XT Coal Mine taken as an example, the loads of the advance support were obtained and then imported into the Ansys software to obtain the stress distribution and displacement distribution of the whole advance support and its parts through calculation. Based on the distribution, the stress and strain of the advance support were analyzed. The simulation results are as follows: Under various working conditions, the maximum displacement of the advance support was 4.5 mm, which is negligible compared to the overall size of the support; the maximum stress was 72.8 MPa, which is lower than the yield strength of the material (235 MPa). Therefore, the designed support can bear the pressure from the surrounding rock in the mine. Moreover, the roof beam, which is a weak link in the support, deserves more attention in subsequent engineering designs. This method conduces to not only parallel operations of excavation, support and anchoring, but also to rapid excavation and the safe production of roadways, providing fresh ideas for the advance support for fully mechanized roadways.

Conventional photothermal therapy (PTT) irradiates the tumor tissues by elevating the temperature above 48 °C to exert thermal ablation, killing tumor cells. However, thermal ablation during PTT harmfully damages the surrounding normal tissues, post-treatment inflammatory responses, rapid metastasis due to the short-term mass release of tumor-cellular contents, or other side effects. To circumvent this limitation, mild-temperature photothermal therapy (MTPTT) was introduced to replace PTT as it exerts its activity at a therapeutic temperature of 42–45 °C. However, the significantly low therapeutic effect comes due to the thermoresistance of cancer cells as MTPTT figures out some of the side-effects issues. Herein, our current review suggested the mechanism and various strategies for improving the efficacy of MTPTT. Especially, heat shock proteins (HSPs) are molecular chaperones overexpressed in tumor cells and implicated in several cellular heat shock responses. Therefore, we introduced some methods to inhibit activity, reduce expression levels, and hinder the function of HSPs during MTPTT treatment. Moreover, other strategies also were emphasized, including nucleus damage, energy inhibition, and autophagy mediation. In addition, some therapies, like radiotherapy, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and immunotherapy, exhibited a significant synergistic effect to assist MTPTT. Our current review provides a basis for further studies and a new approach for the clinical application of MTPTT.

Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ cycling is tightly regulated by ryanodine receptor (RyR) Ca2+ release and sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) Ca2+ uptake during each excitation–contraction coupling cycle. We previously showed that RyR refractoriness plays a key role in the onset of SR Ca2+ alternans in the intact rabbit heart, which contributes to arrhythmogenic action potential duration (APD) alternans. Recent studies have also implicated impaired SERCA function, a key feature of heart failure, in cardiac alternans and arrhythmias. However, the relationship between reduced SERCA function and SR Ca2+ alternans is not well understood. Simultaneous optical mapping of transmembrane potential (Vm) and SR Ca2+ was performed in isolated rabbit hearts (n = 10) using the voltage-sensitive dye RH237 and the low-affinity Ca2+ indicator Fluo-5N-AM. Alternans was induced by rapid ventricular pacing. SERCA was inhibited with cyclopiazonic acid (CPA; 1–10 μM). SERCA inhibition (1, 5, and 10 μM of CPA) resulted in dose-dependent slowing of SR Ca2+ reuptake, with the time constant (tau) increasing from 70.8 ± 3.5 ms at baseline to 85.5 ± 6.6, 129.9 ± 20.7, and 271.3 ± 37.6 ms, respectively (p < 0.05 vs. baseline for all doses). At fast pacing frequencies, CPA significantly increased the magnitude of SR Ca2+ and APD alternans, most strongly at 10 μM (pacing cycle length = 220 ms: SR Ca2+ alternans magnitude: 57.1 ± 4.7 vs. 13.4 ± 8.9 AU; APD alternans magnitude 3.8 ± 1.9 vs. 0.2 ± 0.19 AU; p < 0.05 10 μM of CPA vs. baseline for both). SERCA inhibition also promoted the emergence of spatially discordant alternans. Notably, at all CPA doses, alternation of SR Ca2+ release occurred prior to alternation of diastolic SR Ca2+ load as pacing frequency increased. Simultaneous optical mapping of SR Ca2+ and Vm in the intact rabbit heart revealed that SERCA inhibition exacerbates pacing-induced SR Ca2+ and APD alternans magnitude, particularly at fast pacing frequencies. Importantly, SR Ca2+ release alternans always occurred before the onset of SR Ca2+ load alternans. These findings suggest that even in settings of diminished SERCA function, relative refractoriness of RyR Ca2+ release governs the onset of intracellular Ca2+ alternans.

It is of great significance for the improvement of grouting technology and engineering practice to master the flow law of grout between parallel plates. However, the traditional calculation model ignores the influence of the inertia term and only considers the stable flow of slurry, so there is a big error in some cases. It is difficult to solve the motion equation of a Bingham fluid considering the inertial force term directly. Combined with the relationship between the steady-state flow equation of a Bingham fluid and a Newtonian fluid, the approximate unsteady-state flow equation of a Bingham fluid suitable for describing slurry flow is constructed. In addition, according to the unsteady flow equation, the relationship between the time and distance of slurry flow in parallel plate fractures can be obtained, and the simplified conditions of the Bingham fluid unsteady flow model are given. Finally, the accuracy of the flow equations and the simplified conditions are verified by experiments and numerical calculations.

Pore water pressure has an important influence on the stresses and deformation of the surrounding rock of deep tunnels in water-rich areas. In this study, a mechanical model for deep tunnels subjected to a nonuniform stress field in water-rich areas is developed. Considering the pore water pressure, a new unified solution for the stresses, postpeak zone radii, and surface displacement is derived based on a strain-softening model and the Mogi-Coulomb criterion. Through a case study, the effects of pore water pressure, intermediate principal stress, and residual cohesion on the stress distribution, postpeak zone radii, and surface displacement are also discussed. Results show that the tangential stresses are always larger than the radial stress. The radial stress presents a gradually increasing trend, while the tangential stress presents a trend of first increasing and then decreasing, and the maximum tangential stress appears at the interface between the elastic and plastic zones. As the pore water pressure increases, the postpeak zone radii and surface displacement increase. Because of the neglect of the intermediate principal stress in the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, the postpeak zone radii, surface displacement, and maximum tangential stress solved by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion are all larger than those solved by the Mogi-Coulomb criterion. Tunnels surrounded by rock masses with a higher residual cohesion experience lower postpeak zone radii and surface displacement. Data presented in this study provide an important theoretical basis for supporting the tunnels in water-rich areas.

Mining-induced fractures in underground coal mining face affect the stability of overburdens and provide preferential channels for water and material transfer in the underground environment. Therefore, to study the development of water-flowing fracture zones in overburdens of working face and goaf is of great significance for roof control, gas drainage, water resistance, disaster reduction, and efficient mining from the mining. In this study, a new method for predicting the development of overburden water-flowing fracture zone height (DHOWFFZ) was proposed based on the characteristics of overburden rock in No. 3 coal seam of Xin’an Coal Mine. First, the stope of No. 3 coal seam exhibits a rock stratum structure of mudstone and sandstone overlapping. Considering this characteristic, the overburden strata of No. 3 coal seam are divided into several “mudstone-sandstone” rock stratum groups. Furthermore, the ultimate tensile deformation of soft rock is greater than that of hard rock. It is proposed to judge the development degree of penetrating fracture in each rock stratum by adopting the elongation rate of mudstone intermediate layer. Meanwhile, the DHOWFFZ of “mudstone sandstone” composite rock stratum structure in the 3402 working face of No. 3 coal seam is calculated to be smaller than 43.1 m according to the actual situation. Finally, the DHOWFFZ in the 3402 working face was measured in the field, which verifies the rationality of the new DHOWFFZ prediction method. The research results provide new ideas for the prediction of DHOWFFZ and are helpful for future research in related fields.

In coal mines, under high in situ stress and strong mining activity, roadway surrounding rock commonly contains large amounts of larger fractures and microfractures. Along with the large deformation and continuous rheology of the soft rock roadway, the fractures in the surrounding rock are likely to be compressed and closed, forming undeveloped microfractures, which hinder conventional grouting support methods. Based on the fluid-solid coupling between slurry seepage and microfracture deformation, a theoretical model of microfracture grouting seepage is established. A program for the analysis and calculation of microfracture grouting is developed to quantitatively describe the variation in slurry seepage distance and fracture opening. Numerical experiments are carried out to study the grouting seepage of microfractures under different grouting pressures and fracture opening conditions, and the variation rules for the spatial distribution of fracture opening and slurry seepage distance during grouting pressure are obtained. Fluid-solid coupling has a significant influence on grout seepage characteristics. The grouting pressure and the fracture opening changes are nonlinearly attenuated along the grout seepage direction.

Rock bursts in coal mines are usually unpredictable. In view of this problem, the energy–frequency relationship and spatial distribution characteristics of microseismic events during the mining of 5305 working face in Xinhe Coal Mine under complex geological conditions were analyzed in this study. Besides, the law and precursors of rock burst occurrence in this working face were discussed. The following research results were obtained. Before the rock burst occurred in 5305 working face, the energy and frequency of microseismic events vary in the following order: “peak-drop-rise-rock burst.” The analysis on spatial characteristics of microseismic events suggests that microseismic events were mainly concentrated at the boundary between the roof and the coal seam or at the hard roof near the coal seam within 0–160 m in front of the working face, and most of the events lay on the goaf side. Moreover, the energy and frequency of microseismic events both decrease in the above region before the rock burst occurred. This “microseismic event absence” phenomenon can be regarded as one of the precursors of rock burst occurrence. In addition, a multilevel antiburst scheme was proposed for the complex conditions: (1) to adopt large-diameter boreholes pressure relief technology and key layer high-level pressure relief technology for adjusting the stress distribution in the surrounding rock of crossheading in front of the working face and dissipating elastic strain energy; (2) to determine the advance speed to be 1.5 m/d for reducing the mining disturbance; (3) to adopt full-section reinforced support of the roadway for enhancing the antiburst capacity of surrounding rock. After the implementation of this scheme, the energy and frequency of microseismic events monitored on-site changed gently, and 5305 working face was safely recovered to the stop line position. The scheme boasts a remarkable rock burst prevention and control effect.

Karst collapse pillars (KCPs) frequently cause severe groundwater inrush disasters in coal mining above a confined aquifer. An accurate understanding of the damage and fracture evolution, permeability enhancement, and seepage changes in KCPs under the combined action of mining-induced stress and confined hydraulic pressure is of great significance for the early prediction and prevention of groundwater inrush from KCPs in coal seam floors. In this study, a micromechanics-based coupled stress-seepage-damage (SSD) modeling approach, in which the macroscopic mechanical and hydraulic properties of the rock are explicitly related to the microcrack kinetics, is proposed to simulate the fracture evolution and the associated groundwater flow in KCPs. An in situ high-precision microseismic monitoring technology is used to verify the micromechanical modeling results, which indicate that the numerical model successfully reproduces the damage and fracture evolution in a coal seam floor with a KCP during the mining process. The presented model also provides a visual representation of the complex process of KCP activation and groundwater inrush channel formation. A numerical study shows that the damage and activation of a KCP start from the edge of the KCP, gradually develop toward the interior of the KCP, and eventually connect with the damage fracture zone of the floor, forming a primary water-conducting channel in the KCP, causing the confined groundwater to flow into the working face. Groundwater inrush from a KCP is a gradual process instead of a mutation process. A reduction in the distance between the working face and a KCP and increases in the confined hydraulic pressure and the initial water-conducting height of the KCP can significantly increase the risk of groundwater inrush from the KCP.

Accurate calculation for the critical support pressure of tunnels plays an important role in tunnel stability evaluation and support design. In this study, a mechanical model for circular tunnels is developed. Considering the intermediate principal stress and strain-softening characteristic of rock mass, the critical support pressure when the plastic zone and damage zone begin to occur is determined based on the unified strength criterion and strain-softening model. Through the example study, the critical support pressure under different intermediate principal stress coefficient is solved. Furthermore, the effect of initial field stress, softening coefficient, and maximum damage variable on the critical support pressure are also discussed. The results show that the critical support pressure and radii of plastic and damage zones all decrease with the increase of the intermediate principal stress coefficient. The larger the initial field stress, the larger the critical support pressure. The softening coefficient and maximum damage variable of rock mass has no influence on the critical support pressure when the plastic zone begins to form, but has a significant effect on the critical support pressure when the damage zone begins to form. As softening coefficient increases and maximum damage variable decreases, the critical support pressure when the damage zone which begins to form increases. Data presented in this contribution provide significant theoretical insights into evaluating tunnel stability and support system reliability.

The cracking process in rock or concrete is usually characterized by the formation of microcracks that eventually form a propagating macrocrack. A series of three-point bending experiments were performed on sandstone containing Mode I crack under different loading rates. The microscopic monitoring system was established to capture the cracking process at notch tip. The loading rate dependence of microcracking behaviour was analysed based on load-time curves, acoustic emission (AE), microscopic images, and micrograph-based digital image correlation (DIC) technology. Results showed that the specimens underwent a short period of compression and elastic deformation stage under high loading rate, and the peak loads increased with the increase in loading rate. The AE results revealed that the fracturing process can be divided into elastic stage, damage stage, and postpeak stage, and more extensive damage occurred before the peak under low loading rate. It can be observed from microscopic images that the crack was initiated during the elastic stage, which was earlier than that determined from the AE monitoring. In addition, the microcracks were initiated at multiple locations and were mainly located at the interfaces between dense grains under low loading rate, while microcracks were observed inside the grains under high loading rate. Furthermore, the DIC results showed that the crack opening displacement (COD) of 0.6 mm/min at the peak was almost twice than that of 3.0 mm/min. The COD under the same loading rate at the peak can be considered as the material property of sandstone.

This paper introduces a case study on the failure mechanism and support design of a roadway tunnel in the fault fracture zone of the 106 mining area in the Yuandian no.2 coal mine. Based on the on-site geological conditions (in-situ stress test, borehole television imaging, and lithological analysis), the failure mechanism of the roadway tunnel in the fault fracture zone was studied. The test results showed that the high tectonic stress, fractured rock, and poor lithology are the primary reasons for the roadway instability. According to the support principles of grouting reinforcement, pre-reinforced support, and rational support range, a new type of combined support technology was proposed, including advanced grouting, grouting bolts, and grouting anchor cables. A 100 m roadway section was selected for field testing using the new support scheme, and detailed deformation monitoring was performed. Monitoring results showed that the roadway deformation under the new support was significantly reduced. During the roadway excavation process, no roof collapse phenomenon occurred, and the safety of roadway excavation was ensured. This successful case provides an important reference for similar roadway projects in the fault fracture zone.

In grouting support projects, due to the small concealment of micro-fractures, the support effect often fails to meet design requirements. The percolation effect is a common factor that causes grouting failure, and the influence of grouting pressure on the percolation effect is very obvious. In this article, a design of a micro-fracture grouting experimental system is presented that can realize high-pressure grouting and then uses a variety of ultrafine cements to carry out high- and low-pressure grouting tests under different fracture opening conditions, thereby obtaining the grouting pressure and accumulated grouting weight during the grouting process. The results show that a combination of the grouting pressure curve and the cumulative grouting weight curve can determine whether the ultrafine cement will have a percolation effect. Increasing the grouting pressure can reduce the critical fracture opening value and also reduce the occurrence of the percolation effect. The research results provide a theoretical basis for the high-pressure grouting of micro-fracture rock masses and offer certain guiding significance for the design of high-pressure grouting support schemes.

Secondary development of FLAC3D software was carried out based on FISH language, and a 3D fluid-solid coupling numerical calculation model was established for an inclined seam mining above a confined aquifer in Taoyuan Coal Mine. A simulation study was implemented on the mining failure depth of an inclined coal seam floor, conducting height of confined water, and the position of workface floor with easy water inrush during advancement of workface. Results indicated that, during the advancement of the inclined coal seam’s workface, obvious equivalent stress concentration areas existed in the floor strata, and the largest equivalent stress concentration area was located at the low region of workface floor. When the inclined coal seam workface advanced to about 80 m, the depth of floor plastic failure zone reached the maximum at approximately 15.0 m, and the maximum failure depth was located at the low region of the workface floor. Before the inclined workface mining, original confined water conducting existed on the top interface of the confined aquifer. The conducting height of the confined water reached the maximum at about 11.0 m when the workface was pushed forward from an open-off cut at about 80 m. Owing to the barrier effect of the “soft-hard-soft” compound water-resistant strata of the workface floor, pore water pressure and its seepage velocity in the floor strata were unchanged after the workface advanced to about 80 m. After the strata parameters at the workface floor were changed, pore water pressure of the confined water could pass through the lower region of the inclined workface floor strata and break through the barrier of the “soft-hard-soft” compound water-resistant strata of the workface floor and into the mining workface, resulting in the inclined coal seam floor water inrush. Results of this study can provide a basis for predicting, preventing, and governing the inclined coal seam floor water inrush above confined aquifer.

The study of deformation, strength, and other mechanical characteristics of sandstone under true triaxial compression is significant for understanding failure mechanisms in rock and evaluating the stability of underground structures. Conventional and true triaxial compression tests for sandstone are conducted for different stress states in this study using the self-developed true triaxial electrohydraulic servo test system combined with acoustic emission (AE) testing. This study presents an in-depth and systematic investigation of deformation, strength, and AE characteristics. The results show significant differences in deformation, strength, and acoustic emission characteristics for the rock under conventional triaxial and true triaxial compression tests, respectively. The peak strength, axial strain, lateral strain, and incremental strain (in unstable crack growth stage) increase with increasing confining pressure under conventional triaxial compression, and the AE count gradually decreases while shear crack proportion gradually increases, indicating that increasing confining pressure gradually inhibits the shear slip effect along fractures, delays perforation of the rock shear fracture surface, and enhances the ability of the rock to withstand deformation and load. Under true triaxial compression, the peak strength increases and then decreases with increasing intermediate principal stress σ2 and the axial strain ε1 and lateral strain ε2 gradually decrease; besides, the lateral strain (expansion) of the rock is mainly in the minimum principal stress σ3 direction, and lateral expansion tends to decrease before increasing. AE events first weaken and then enhance with increasing σ2, and the proportion of shear cracks increases first and then decreases, indicating that the confining pressure gradually changes from the shear slip effect that controls crack offset to the damage effect that promotes crack tension with increasing σ2. In addition, the protective effect of confining pressure improves when σ3 increases.

β-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) blockers may be administered during acute myocardial infarction (MI), as they reduce energy demand through negative chronotropic and inotropic effects and prevent ischemia-induced arrhythmogenesis. However, the direct effects of β-AR blockers on ventricular electrophysiology and intracellular Ca2+ handling during ischemia remain unknown. Using optical mapping of transmembrane potential (with RH237) and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ (with the low-affinity indicator Fluo-5N AM), the effects of 15 min of regional ischemia were assessed in isolated rabbit hearts (n = 19). The impact of β-AR inhibition on isolated hearts was assessed by pre-treatment with 100 nM propranolol (Prop) prior to ischemia (n = 7). To control for chronotropy and inotropy, hearts were continuously paced at 3.3 Hz and contraction was inhibited with 20 μM blebbistatin. Untreated ischemic hearts displayed prototypical shortening of action potential duration (APD80) in the ischemic zone (IZ) compared to the non-ischemic zone (NI) at 10 and 15 min ischemia, whereas APD shortening was prevented with Prop. Untreated ischemic hearts also displayed significant changes in SR Ca2+ handling in the IZ, including prolongation of SR Ca2+ reuptake and SR Ca2+ alternans, which were prevented with Prop pre-treatment. At 5 min ischemia, Prop pre-treated hearts also showed larger SR Ca2+ release amplitude in the IZ compared to untreated hearts. These results suggest that even when controlling for chronotropic and inotropic effects, β-AR inhibition has a favorable effect during acute regional ischemia via direct effects on APD and Ca2+ handling.

Based on the stress field distribution rule of the mining floor under abutment pressure, we have established a simplified mechanical model, which contains multiple factors relating to activation and evolution of insidious water-conductive faults. The influence of normal and shear stresses on fault activation and effective shear stress distribution in the fault plane was acquired under mining conditions. Using fracture mechanics theory to calculate the stress intensity factor of an insidious fault front, we have derived the criterion for main fault activation. Results indicate that during the whole working face advance, transpressions are exerted on fault planes twice successively in opposite directions. In most cases, the second transpression is more likely to lead to fault activation. Activation is influenced by many factors, predominant among which are: burial depth of the insidious fault, friction angle of the fault plane, face advance direction and pore water pressure. Steep fault planes are more easily activated to induce a sustained water inrush in the face. This paper presented a case study of the failure mechanisms and support design for deep composite soft rock roadway in the Yangcheng Coal Mine of China. Many experiments and field tests were performed to reveal the failure mechanisms of the roadway. It was found that the surrounding rock of the roadway was HJS complex soft rock that was characterized by poor rock quality, widespread development of joint fissures, and an unstable creep property. The major horizontal stress, which was almost perpendicular to the roadway, was 1.59 times larger than the vertical stress. The weak surrounding rock and high tectonic stress were the main internal causes of roadway instabilities, and the inadequate support was the external cause. Based on the failure mechanism, a new support design was proposed that consisted of bolting, cable, metal mesh, shotcrete, and grouting. A field experiment using the new design was performed in a roadway section approximately 100 m long. Detailed deformation monitoring was conducted in the experimental roadway sections and sections of the previous roadway. The monitoring results showed that deformations of the roadway with the new support design were reduced by 85–90% compared with those of the old design. This successful case provides an important reference for similar soft rock roadway projects.
