Exploring a green, low-cost peening process to improve the surface integrity of titanium alloys, increasing fatigue life, and breaking through the limitations in large-scale applications is an urgent need at present. The study presents a novel peening method using sinking beads as the shot, combined with the low dust pollution and water film cushioning advantages of waterjet peening. The impact of the process on the surface integrity of titanium alloys is meticulously discussed to elucidate the microstructural evolution. Constant stress fatigue tests are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. It was found that the jet pressure and feed rate determined the energy density and the number of peening for sinking bead abrasives, which were the key factors affecting the surface material properties of the peening specimen. By optimizing the process parameters, the maximum surface residual compressive stress can reach 875.5 MPa, the microhardness can attain 481.7 HV, and the surface roughness can be reduced to 1.594 μm. The surface of the peened specimen is covered with impact craters, exhibiting a plastic deformation layer with evident grain refinement and lattice distortion. The ductility of the peened specimen decreased, with axial deformation reducing from 0.278 mm to 0.260 mm under constant cyclic stress. Due to the increase in microhardness and the introduction of residual compressive stresses, the fatigue cycles of the specimen were increased from 20692 to 33615, improving the fatigue life by 62.45%.

The hands and face are the most important parts for expressing sign language morphemes in sign language videos. However, we find that existing Continuous Sign Language Recognition (CSLR) methods lack the mining of hand and face information in visual backbones or use expensive and time-consuming external extractors to explore this information. In addition, the signs have different lengths, whereas previous CSLR methods typically use a fixed-length window to segment the video to capture sequential features and then perform global temporal modeling, which disturbs the perception of complete signs. In this study, we propose a Multi-Scale Context-Aware network (MSCA-Net) to solve the aforementioned problems. Our MSCA-Net contains two main modules: (1) Multi-Scale Motion Attention (MSMA), which uses the differences among frames to perceive information of the hands and face in multiple spatial scales, replacing the heavy feature extractors; and (2) Multi-Scale Temporal Modeling (MSTM), which explores crucial temporal information in the sign language video from different temporal scales. We conduct extensive experiments using three widely used sign language datasets, i.e., RWTH-PHOENIX-Weather-2014, RWTH-PHOENIX-Weather-2014T, and CSL-Daily. The proposed MSCA-Net achieve state-of-the-art performance, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach.

In order to address the escalating climate change crisis and meet Net-Zero Emission targets, it is necessary to form a widespread green lifestyle as soon as possible. Based on annual panel data at the provincial level in China from 2008 to 2019, this paper systematically explores the impact of large-scale guidance activities on residents' green lifestyles by constructing a multi-period DID model. The results show that the national low-carbon pilot significantly improves the green living standards of residents, and these results remain robust after various rigorous tests. In addition, the results of heterogeneity analysis show that in areas with higher income levels and education levels, the low-carbon pilot projects have a better impact on improving residents' green lifestyles. Furthermore, this paper reveals that residents' environmental awareness and regional green innovation levels significantly and positively moderate the impact of the pilot projects on residents’ green lifestyles. This study expands our understanding of the mechanisms driving a green lifestyle, offering valuable insights for governments aiming to promote widespread adoption of green practices and formulate effective policies.

Microplastics (MPs) are colonized by biofilm-forming microbes. Biodegradable plastics, popular replacements for traditional plastics, still have unknown biofilm formation characteristics. We conducted a 60-day indoor experiment, where sediment was exposed to traditional MPs (polypropylene, PP), biodegradable MPs (polylactic acid, PLA), and glass beads (GLASS). The microbial communities in the MPs-biofilm were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing. Results indicated that Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum on all substrates, followed by Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. At the genus level, the majority of microorganisms colonizing PP possessed nitrification and denitrification capabilities, while the dominant bacteria on PLA were capable of degrading lignin, cellulose and carbon metabolism. The genus Sphingomonas, a promising bacteria capable of degrading biodegradable microplastics, was particularly discovered on the PLA biofilm, meanwhile, bacterial colonization of PLA indirectly increased the potential for human transmission of pathogens. Redundancy analysis revealed that the pH and moisture significantly affected the bacterial communities. Pearson correlation heatmap indicated that the abundance of the majority of dominant bacterial genera of two MPs biofilms is negatively correlated with the physicochemical parameters of sediment (pH, moisture, TN, TP), except for salinity. The microbial communities associated with PP and PLA exhibited distinct differences caused by the combined effects of changes in physicochemical properties of sediment and different material substrates. This study provides further evidence of the significant selective features exhibited by microbial colonization on these two MPs when exposed to the same source community, offering insights into the exploration of promising bacteria for MPs degradation.

Moxifloxacin (MOX), a widely used novel antibiotic, may pose ecological risks at its actual environmental concentrations, as has been detected in aquatic systems. However, its ecotoxicity to aquatic organisms and regulatory mechanisms of phosphorus in eutrophic aqueous environments are still limited. This study aimed to analyze its physiological and biochemical parameters, including cellular growth, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative stress biomarkers, and metabolomics to elucidate the toxicity induced by environmental concentrations of MOX in Microcystis aeruginosa at different phosphorus levels. The results revealed that the EC50 values of MOX on M. aeruginosa at different phosphorus concentrations were 8.03, 7.84, and 6.91 μg/L, respectively, indicating MOX toxicity was exacerbated with increasing phosphorus levels. High phosphorus intensified the suppression of chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic pigments, while activating the antioxidant enzyme, indicating severe peroxidation damage. Metabolomic analysis showed MOX induced different discriminating metabolites under different phosphorus levels, and perturbed more biological pathways at higher phosphorus concentrations, such as starch and sucrose metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and glycerolipid metabolism. This indicates that phosphorus plays an important role in regulating metabolism in M. aeruginosa exposed to MOX. The findings provide valuable information on the mechanisms involved in cyanobacteria responses to antibiotic stress, and offer a theoretical basis for accurately assessing antibiotic toxicity in eutrophic aqueous environments.

The increasing intensity and frequency of extreme climate events have made improving the adaptability to extreme climate events a strategic imperative for manufacturing companies. This paper investigates whether manufacturing enterprises increase green technology innovation affected by different extreme climate events. Based on panel data of Chinese listed manufacturing enterprises, we show that extreme precipitation events can positively promote green technology innovation, yet extreme temperature events do not. Heterogeneity analyses suggest that the effect of extreme precipitation events on green technology innovation is more significant for non-state-owned enterprises, poor performance enterprises, and high R&D intensity enterprises than other enterprises. Furthermore, the facilitating effect of extreme precipitation events on green technology innovation is merely temporary.

Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) is an untraditional machining tool that has been used in numerous applications. This study aims at clarifying the cylindrical surface characteristics machined by AWJ under different radii (Rc) of circular cuts. AA7075 aluminum alloy was used as the specimen, and the morphologies and roughness of the cut surfaces were used to evaluate the cutting quality. The main processing parameters include the working pressure, the tangential velocity, and the standoff distance. Additionally, a linear cut under the same parameters was conducted for comparison. Results show that linear and circular cuts share the same material removal mechanism, but the quality of cylindrical surface is worse than that of the plane one. Roughness in all the three regions gradually increases with the decrease of Rc and varies the most in the rough zone. The roughness at the bottom of the workpiece with Rc = 2.5 mm is more than twice that of a linear cut. The micro-morphologies of the surfaces are distinctly different under various Rc, and the jet lag effect is more obvious at smaller Rc. The analysis result of variance (ANOVA) showed that the ranking of prominent parameters affecting the cylindrical surface quality are the tangential velocity, the circular cut radius, the working pressure, and the standoff distance. To achieve a high cutting quality when using AWJ for circular cuts, it is recommended to prioritize optimizing the tangential velocity. Furthermore, the regression model of input parameters and roughness was developed, whose mean error and correlation coefficient R2 were 5.51% and 0.9489, respectively.

The position distribution of fatty acids in triglycerides from different parts of freshwater fish was investigated in this paper. The position distribution of fatty acids on triglycerides Sn-1,2,3 in four parts (head, tail, back, and viscera) from three freshwater fish species (grass, black, and crucian carp) was analyzed by gas chromatography after the solid phase extraction, enzymatic hydrolysis. The results showed that a total of 21 fatty acids were monitored on triglycerides of three freshwater fish species. The content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) ranged from 29.58% to 49.48%, and MUFAs located in Sn-1,3 positions were significantly higher than those in the Sn-2 position in all samples (P

The g-C3N4/BiOI/CdS double Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with I3−/I− redox pairs is prepared using simple calcination, solvothermal, and solution chemical deposition methods. The photocatalyst comprised mesoporous, thin g-C3N4 nanosheets loaded on flower-like microspheres of BiOI with CdS quantum dots. The g-C3N4/BiOI/CdS double Z-scheme heterojunction has abundant active sites and in situ redox I3−/I− mediators and shows quantum size effects, which are all conducive to enhancing the separation of photoinduced charges and increasing the photocatalytic degradation efficiency for bisphenol A, a model pollutant. Specifically, the heterojunction photocatalyst achieves a photocatalytic degradation efficiency for bisphenol A of 98.62% in 120 min and photocatalytic hydrogen production of 863.44 μmol h−1g−1 on exposure to visible light. The excellent visible-light photocatalytic performance is as a result of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which extends absorption to the visible light region, as well as the I3−/I− pairs, which accelerate photoinduced charge carrier transfer and separation, thus dramatically boosting the photocatalytic performance. In addition, the key role of the charge transfer across the indirect Z-scheme heterojunction has been elucidated and the transfer mechanism is confirmed based on the detection of intermediate I3− ions. Thus, this study provides guidelines for the design of indirect Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

It is of great significance to regulate the coordination environment of ZrO2 to enhance its photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity. In this paper, non-metallic elements (A = C, N, P, S) doped ZrO2 photocatalysts are designed based on first-principles, and further loaded with single-atom Pt. The relationship between the composition and performance of photocatalysts during doping and loading of single-atom is explained through electronic properties, and their photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance is explored. Loading and doping have a synergistic effect on the modification of ZrO2, and doping effectively improves its catalytic performance. Among them, P doping greatly reduces the Gibbs free energy of the reaction. After the introduction of Pt single atoms, Pt@ZrO2(111)-P still has the best structure for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and the good surface electronic activity significantly improves the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) activity (free energy of −0.01 eV). This design provides a new catalytic model for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution system and also provides some ideas for understanding the synergistic effects of loading and doping.

ObjectiveWe aimed to explore imaging indicators for diagnosing the etiology of single small subcortical infarctions (SSI) using high-resolution vessel wall imaging (HR-VWI).MethodsPatients with acute isolated subcortical cerebral infarction were prospectively enrolled and classified as having large artery atherosclerosis (LAA), stroke of undetermined etiology (SUD), or small artery disease (SAD). The infarct information, the cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) score, morphological characteristics of the lenticulostriate arteries (LSAs), and plaque characteristics were compared between the three groups.ResultsSeventy seven patients were enrolled (30 LAA, 28 SUD, and 19 SAD). The total CSVD score of the LAA (P = 0.001) and SUD groups (P = 0.017) was significantly lower than that of the SAD group. The number and total length of LSA branches in the LAA and SUD groups were shorter than in the SAD group. Moreover, the total length laterality index (LI) of the LSAs in the LAA and SUD groups was greater than in the SAD group. The total CSVD score and LI of total length were independent predictors for the SUD and LAA groups. The remodeling index of the SUD group was significantly higher than that of the LAA group (P = 0.002); positive remodeling was dominant in the SUD group (60.7%), whereas remodeling in the LAA group was primarily non-positive (83.3%).ConclusionsSSI with and without plaques on the carrier artery may have different modes of pathogenesis. Patients with plaques may also have a coexisting mechanism of atherosclerosis.

Improving the level of cooperative governance of open innovation projects is a key bridge and powerful starting point for promoting the full integration and coordinated development of different market systems. Against the background of the synergy of the electricity–carbon market, this study explores how a company chooses a cooperative governance mechanism and the implementation effects of governance mechanisms. The results, based on the sample data from 175 OIPs of companies in China, show that the collaborative dependence of a company promotes the implementation of relational governance; however, it has no significant effect on contract control. Meanwhile, both relational governance and contract control have significant positive effects on knowledge transfer and cooperative performance. Moreover, knowledge transfer plays a mediating role in relational governance, contract control, and cooperative performance. The conclusion enriches the understanding of cooperative governance mechanisms, which has important implications for management research and the practice of open innovation projects. It also has certain practical significance for helping the power industry to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.

Network intrusion detection plays a crucial role in ensuring network security by distinguishing malicious attacks from normal network traffic. However, imbalanced data affects the performance of intrusion detection system. This paper utilizes few-shot learning to solve the data imbalance problem caused by insufficient samples in network intrusion detection, and proposes a few-shot intrusion detection method based on prototypical capsule network with the attention mechanism. Our method is mainly divided into two parts, a temporal-spatial feature fusion method using capsules for feature extraction and a prototypical network classification method with attention and vote mechanisms. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art methods on imbalanced datasets.

A great deal of research attention has been devoted to studying the effects of customer concentration on firm strategic acts. Scholars have also investigated the relationship between customer concentration and firm innovation, but concluded inconsistent findings of such relationship. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. To address these concerns, this study decouples exploratory innovation from firm innovation and introduce performance-reducing threats perceived by the executives as the mediator. Based on the observations of China high-tech listed firms from 2011 to 2018, empirical results show that customer concentration has a U-shaped relationship with exploratory innovation, via the mediating effect of performance-reducing threats perceived by the executives.

The novel fourth-generation fluoroquinolones (FQs) were developed to improve the antimicrobial activity and their utilization has rapidly increased in recent years. However, knowledge of the ecotoxicity and microalgae-mediated biodegradation of these novel FQs is limited. In this research, the toxic effects of moxifloxacin (MOX) and gatifloxacin (GAT) on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as well as their biodegradation and metabolic fate were investigated. The results showed that the toxicity of MOX to C. reinhardtii was higher than that of GAT, and increased with culture time. Chlorophyll fluorescence and pigment content analyses suggested that the decrease in photosynthetic efficiency was primarily caused by the inhibition of electron transport after QA in PSII complex. These FQs induced oxidative damage in cells, and the antioxidation mechanisms of C. reinhardtii were analyzed. The maximum MOX removal of 77.67% by C. reinhardtii was achieved at 1 mg/L MOX, whereas the maximum GAT removal of 34.04% was attained at 20 mg/L GAT. The different hydrophilicity and lipophilicity of these FQs resulted in distinct findings in biodegradation experiments. Identification of the transformation products suggested that the likely biodegradation pathways of FQs by C. reinhardtii were hydroxylation, demethylation, and ring cleavage.

Due to the lack of appropriate experimental methods for imaging the evolution of the microstructure of materials at the growth conditions, our understanding of the physical behavior of crystal growth and defect formation during the vapor deposition growth of SiC crystals is still rather limited. In the present work, the vapor deposition growth of SiC crystal on a 4H-SiC substrate has been investigated by the molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulation method. Three different lattice planes of 4H-SiC ((0001), (112-0) and (1-100)) were selected as the surface of the substrate, and three different temperatures for substrate (2200 K, 2300 K and 2400 K) were used in growth simulations. The characteristics of the formation of different polytypes of SiC and dislocations in the grown crystals were examined. The results show that the SiC crystals were grown by a subsurface nucleation and growth mode in the vapor deposition process. For substrates with (0001) plane as the surface, the 3C-SiC single crystal was obtained in the deposited thin film. For substrates with (112-0) or (1-100) plane as the surface, the 4H-SiC single crystal was obtained instead. The temperature of the substrate was found to have a significant effect on the dislocation density generated in the grown crystals. The mechanism for the formation of Frank partial dislocations during the growth of SiC crystals has been analyzed, for which the importance of the diffusivity of atoms on the surface layer in growth has been highlighted, and it gives a good explanation of the temperature effect on dislocation formation in the grown crystals. These results can be helpful for experimental vapor deposition growth of SiC single crystals and epitaxial layers of high quality.

A coaxial optical fiber interferometer (COFI) is proposed here for ammonia sensing, which comprises two light-carrying single-mode fibers (SMF) fused to a section of no-core fiber (NCF), thus forming an optical interferometer. The outer surface of the COFI is coated with a layer of polyacrylic acid (PAA)/polyaniline (PAni) film. The refractive index (RI) of the sensitive layer varies when PAA/PAni interacts with ammonia, which leads to the resonance wavelength shift. The surface morphology and structure of the PAA/PAni composites were characterized by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. When the sensor was exposed to an ammonia atmosphere of different concentrations at room temperature, the sensing performance of the PAA/PAni composite film was superior to that of a sensitive film formed by single-component PAA or PAni. According to the experimental results, the composite film formed by 5 wt% PAA mixed with 2 wt% PAni shows better performance when used for ammonia sensing. A maximum sensitivity of 9.8 pm/ppm was obtained under the ammonia concentration of 50 ppm. In addition, the sensor shows good performance in response time (100 s) and recovery time (180 s) and has good stability and selectivity. The proposed optical fiber ammonia sensor is adapted to monitor leakage in its production, storage, transportation, and application.

This study summarizes the concept, assessment and diagnosis, categories and symptoms, psychological and biological mechanisms, judicial disposition and clinical intervention strategies of sadomasochism from the perspectives of clinical medicine, law, criminology and psychology, suggests that further research should take local people with sadomasochism preference and local patients as research objects, pay attention to different types of sadomasochists, conduct bottom-up research, explore the core elements and manifestations of sadomasochism, and accurately define and classify sadomasochism, construct an effective scale, a erectile measurement sexual stimulation system and a diagnostic criteria; discuss evaluation methods combined with crime scene data; discuss the validity of masochists’consent combined with diagnosis; establish targeted criminal correction programs and a treatment and rehabilitation system to provide reference for the improvement of medical, judicial and mental health services.

AimsSubarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating stroke subtype. Following SAH, erythrocyte lysis contributes to cell death and brain injuries. Blockage of the anti-phagocytic receptor Cluster of Differentiation 47 (CD47) enhances phagocyte clearance of erythrocytes, though it has not been well-studied post-SAH. The current study aims to determine whether anti-CD47 treatment can enhance blood clearance after experimental SAH.MethodsThe prechiasmatic blood injection model of SAH was used in mice. Mice were either treated with the CD47-blocking antibody or IgG as control. The effect of the anti-CD47 antibody on blood clearance and neurological function following SAH was determined. Neuroinflammation and neuronal injury were compared between the treatment and control samples on day 1 and day 7 after SAH using flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, Fluoro-Jade C, and Nissl staining, RT-PCR, and Western blot analysis.ResultsCD47-blocking antibody sped-up blood clearance after SAH, and resulted in less neuronal injury and neurological deficits than control samples. Microglia played a role in the anti-CD47 blockade. Following SAH Following SAH, CD47 antibody-treated mice had less neuroinflammation and lower levels of apoptosis compared to controls and both one and 7 days.ConclusionsCD47 antibody treatment has a neuroprotective effect following SAH, by increasing blood clearance rate and reducing brain injury. These findings suggest CD47 antibody treatment may improve SAH patient outcomes.

Abstract Background Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with high-priming volume can significantly activate the inflammatory response and increse the usage of packed red blood cells (PRBCs). As risks and complications related to transfusions are increasing, many cardiac centers are focusing on reducing the priming volume of CPB. In our center, efforts have also been made to reduce the priming volume, and the effects of CPB with low-priming volume on clinical outcomes in children undergoing congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery were investigated in this study to provide referential experiences for pediatric CPB. Methods The clinical case data of 158 children undergoing CHD surgery with CPB were collected. The children were divided into the low-priming-volume group (group A, n = 79) and the traditional group (group B, n = 79) according to the priming volume. The amount of PRBCs transfused, the postoperative hematological test results and the clinical outcomes of the two groups were compared by the independent sample t-test or the chi-square test. Currently, JavaScript malicious code detection methods are becoming more and more effective. Still, the existing methods based on deep learning are poor at detecting too long or too short JavaScript code. Based on this, this paper proposes an adaptive code length deep learning network JACLNet, composed of convolutional block RDCNet, BiLSTM and Transfrom, to capture the association features of the variable distance between codes. Firstly, an abstract syntax tree recombination algorithm is designed to provide rich syntax information for feature extraction. Secondly, a deep residual convolution block network (RDCNet) is designed to capture short-distance association features between codes. Finally, this paper proposes a JACLNet network for JavaScript malicious code detection. To verify that the model presented in this paper can effectively detect variable JavaScript code, we divide the datasets used in this paper into long text dataset DB_Long; short text dataset DB_Short, original dataset DB_Or and enhanced dataset DB_Re. In DB_Long, our method's F1 - score is 98.87%, higher than that of JSContana by 2.52%. In DB_Short, our method's F1-score is 97.32%, higher than that of JSContana by 7.79%. To verify that the abstract syntax tree recombination algorithm proposed in this paper can provide rich syntax information for subsequent models, we conduct comparative experiments on DB_Or and DB_Re. In DPCNN+BiLSTM, F1-score with abstract syntax tree recombination increased by 1.72%, and in JSContana, F1-score with abstract syntax tree recombination increased by 1.50%. F1-score with abstract syntax tree recombination in JACNet improved by 1.00% otherwise unused.

Low-level features contain spatial detail information, and high-level features contain rich semantic information. Semantic segmentation research focuses on fully acquiring and effectively fusing spatial detail with semantic information. This paper proposes a multiscale feature-enhanced adaptive fusion network named MFEAFN to improve semantic segmentation performance. First, we designed a Double Spatial Pyramid Module named DSPM to extract more high-level semantic information. Second, we designed a Focusing Selective Fusion Module named FSFM to fuse different scales and levels of feature maps. Specifically, the feature maps are enhanced to adaptively fuse these features by generating attention weights through a spatial attention mechanism and a two-dimensional discrete cosine transform, respectively. To validate the effectiveness of FSFM, we designed different fusion modules for comparison and ablation experiments. MFEAFN achieved 82.64% and 78.46% mIoU on the PASCAL VOC2012 and Cityscapes datasets. In addition, our method has better segmentation results than state-of-the-art methods.

Cobalt-based superalloys are common materials for the manufacturing of various components used in aerospace applications. Conventional cobalt-based superalloys with a unimodal grain structure generally exhibit low strength and ductility at high temperatures. A bimodal grain structure of a cobalt-based superalloy, Co–20Cr–15W–10Ni (CCWN), was designed to achieve both high strength and ductility at high temperatures. The deformation behavior and tensile properties of a CCWN alloy with unimodal fine-grain (FG), coarse-grain (CG), and bimodal (FG/CG) structures were investigated at 900 °C. The microstructures and substructures after high-temperature deformation were examined via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) to determine the deformation mechanisms. The microstructural observation showed that the bimodal grain structure consisted of FG and CG domains. During high-temperature deformation at 900 °C, the FG structure was mainly deformed by dynamic recrystallization (DRX), maintaining a similar FG structure. The CG structure was mainly deformed by DRV, resulting in a small amount of DRX grains and a large amount of dynamic recovery (DRV) grains. However, the bimodal grain structures were mainly softened via DRX and transformed into a new bimodal structure, ultrafine grain (UFG) and FG. The FG domains tended to deform via dislocations, and the CG domains via twinning. The high-temperature tensile tests revealed that the bimodal-structured alloy exhibited both higher strength and ductility than those of the alloy samples with unimodal FG or CG structure. This is associated with the newly developed UFG/FG structures in the bimodal grain-structured samples during high-temperature deformation. This work may provide new insight into the development of high-temperature alloys with bimodal grain structures.

The measurement of pH has received great attention in diverse fields, such as clinical diagnostics, environmental protection, and food safety. Optical fiber sensors are widely used for pH sensing because of their great advantages. In this work, an optical fiber pH sensor is fabricated, by combining the merits of the multimode interference configuration and pH-sensitive polyaniline/polyacrylic acid (PAni/PAA) coatings, which was successfully in situ deposited on the no-core fiber (NCF) by the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly method. The sensors’ performance was experimentally characterized when used for pH detection. It has a high sensitivity of 0.985 nm/pH and a great linear response in a universal pH range of 2–12. The response time and recovery time is measured to be less than 10 s. In addition, its temperature sensitivity is tested to be about 0.01 nm/°C with a low temperature crosstalk effect, which makes it promising for detecting pH in the liquid phase with temperature variation. The sensors also demonstrated easy fabrication, good stability, and repeatability, which are adapted to pH detection in most practical applications.

Abstract Background The advances of hyperspectral technology provide a new analytic means to decrease the gap of phenomics and genomics caused by the fast development of plant genomics with the next generation sequencing technology. Through hyperspectral technology, it is possible to phenotype the biochemical attributes of rice seeds and use the data for GWAS. Results The results of correlation analysis indicated that Normalized Difference Spectral Index (NDSI) had high correlation with protein content (PC) with RNDSI2 = 0.68. Based on GWAS analysis using all the traits, NDSI was able to identify the same SNP loci as rice protein content that was measured by traditional methods. In total, hyperspectral trait NDSI identified all the 43 genes that were identified by biochemical trait PC. NDSI identified 1 extra SNP marker on chromosome 1, which annotated extra 22 genes that were not identified by PC. Kegg annotation results showed that traits NDSI annotated 3 pathways that are exactly the same as PC. The cysteine and methionine metabolic pathway identified by both NDSI and PC was reported important for biosynthesis and metabolism of some of amino acids/protein in rice seeds. Conclusion This study combined hyperspectral technology and GWAS analysis to dissect PC of rice seeds, which was high throughput and proven to be able to apply to GWAS as a new phenotyping tool. It provided a new means to phenotype one of the important biochemical traits for the determination of rice quality that could be used for genetic studies.

Abstract Background Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing provides a flexible, low-cost, and efficient approach to monitor crop growth status at fine spatial and temporal resolutions, and has a high potential to accelerate breeding process and improve precision field management. Method In this study, we discussed the use of lightweight UAV with dual image-frame snapshot cameras to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB) and panicle biomass (PB) of rice at different growth stages with different nitrogen (N) treatments. The spatial–temporal variations in the typical vegetation indices (VIs) and AGB were first investigated, and the accuracy of crop surface model (CSM) extracted from the Red Green Blue (RGB) images at two different stages were also evaluated. Random forest (RF) model for AGB estimation as well as the PB was then developed. Furthermore, variable importance and sensitivity analysis of UAV variables were performed to study the potential of improving model robustness and prediction accuracies. Results It was found that the canopy height extracted from the CSM (Hcsm) exhibited a high correlation with the ground-measured canopy height, while it was unsuitable to be independently used for biomass assessment of rice during the entire growth stages. We also observed that several VIs were highly correlated with AGB, and the modified normalized difference spectral index extracted from the multispectral image achieved the highest correlation. RF model with fusing RGB and multispectral image data substantially improved the prediction results of AGB and PB with the prediction of root mean square error (RMSEP) reduced by 8.33–16.00%. The best prediction results for AGB and PB were achieved with the coefficient of determination (r2), the RMSEP and relative RMSE (RRMSE) of 0.90, 0.21 kg/m2 and 14.05%, and 0.68, 0.10 kg/m2 and 12.11%, respectively. In addition, the result confirmed that the sensitivity analysis could simplify the prediction model without reducing the prediction accuracy. Conclusion These findings demonstrate the feasibility of applying lightweight UAV with dual image-frame snapshot cameras for rice biomass estimation, and its potential for high throughput analysis of plant growth-related traits in precision agriculture as well as the advanced breeding program.

Abstract The deployment cost of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), one of the key elements for smart grid, often arises from three sub-systems, respectively referred to as data management system, communication network, and smart devices. Among them, the costs of communication network account for a considerable proportion. In smart grid, smart devices are generally fixed in a certain position and schedule reading of interval meter data. They do not only cover smart meters, but also extend gas, water meters, and other sensors measuring light, humidity, and temperature. Many of them are often with battery supply, and this will bring utilization constraints especially in communication network. The deployment needs of reducing cost and the energy-constrained network for an extremely large-scale AMI infrastructure both require optimum communication technologies that consider energy consumption, minimize energy use, simplify network topology, and prolong network lifetime. As an emerging 3GPP radio interface technology specifically designed for low power wide area networks (LPWANs), Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) inherits from the existing LTE but does many simplifications. Its most prominent features, enhanced coverage and low power consumption, are being pursued for a large-scale AMI communication network. In this paper, we provide a survey of AMI communication, emphasize on the key technologies of NB-IoT, analyze the performance of NB-IoT network over a real-world, and demonstrate the potential of NB-IoT to support and boost AMI in smart grid.

The catalysts employed in catalytic reactors greatly affect the reaction efficiency of the reaction system and the reactor’s performance. This work presents a rapid comparative study on three kinds of Fe-based materials integrated into an optofluidic Fenton reactor for water treatment. The Fe-based sheets (FeSiB, FeNbCuSiB, and FeNi) were respectively implanted into the reaction chamber to degrade the organic dyes with the assistance of H2O2. In the experiment, by adjusting the hydrogen peroxide concentration, flow rate, and light irradiation, the applicable conditions of the Fe-based materials for the dye degradation could be evaluated quickly to explore the optimal design of the Fenton reaction system. The results indicated that FeNi (1j85) exhibits excellent degradability in the microreactor, the reaction rate can reach 23.4%/s at the flow rate of 330 μL/min, but its weak corrosion resistance was definitely demonstrated. Although the initial degradability of the microreactor by using FeNbCuSiB (1k107) was not as good as that of 1j85, it increased after being reused several times instead, and the degradation efficiency reached >98% after being reused five times. However, the FeSiB (1k101) material shows the worst degradability and recycling. Therefore, in contrast, 1k107 has the greatest potential to be used in Fenton reactors for practical water treatment.

Accurate acquisition of plant phenotypic information has raised long-standing concerns in support of crop breeding programs. Different methods have been developed for high throughput plant phenotyping, while they mainly focused on the canopy level without considering the spatiotemporal heterogeneity at different canopy layers and growth stages. This study aims to phenotype spatiotemporal heterogeneity of chlorophyll (Chl) content and fluorescence response within rice leaves and canopies. Multipoint Chl content and high time-resolved Chl a fluorescence (ChlF) transient (OJIP transient) of rice plants were measured at different nitrogen levels and growth stages. Results showed that the Chl content within the upper leaves exhibited an increasing trend from the basal to the top portions but a decreasing pattern within the lower leaves at the most growth stages. Leaf Chl content within the rice canopy was higher in the lower leaves in the vegetative phase, while from the initial heading stage the pattern gradually reversed with the highest Chl content appearing in the upper leaves. Nitrogen supply mainly affects the occurrence time of the reverse vertical pattern. This could be the result of different nutritional demands of leaves transforming from sinks to sources, and it was further confirmed by the fall of the JI phase of OJIP transient in the vegetative phase and the rise in the reproductive phase. We further deduced that the vertical distribution of Chl content could have a defined pattern at a specific growth stage. Furthermore, the reduction of end acceptors at photosystem I (PSI) electron acceptor side per cross section (RE0/CS) was found to be a potential sensitive predictor for identifying the vertical heterogeneity of leaf Chl content. These findings provide prior knowledge on the vertical profiles of crop physiological traits, which explore the opportunity to develop more efficient plant phenotyping tools for crop breeding.

Abstract Background Rapid demographic and economic changes have made chronic disease the number one health issue in China, contributing to more than 80% of the country’s 10.3 million annual deaths and nearly 70% of its total disease burden (Wang et al., Toward a Healthy and Harmonious Life in China: Stemming the Rising Tide of Non-Communicable Diseases, 2011; Yip and Hsiao, Lancet 384: 805-18, 2014). Diabetes is a major contributor to the chronic disease burden and is experienced by nearly 11% of the adult population of China (Yang et al., N Engl J Med 362:1090-101, 2010). In response to the challenges of chronic disease, the Chinese government initiated comprehensive health care reforms nationwide in 2009. A key measure was a hierarchical diagnosis and treatment system for monitoring and reducing chronic diseases and improving the community health service system (Barber et al., Health Policy Plan 29:367-78, 2014). Primary hospitals, such as community health service centers, are the main gatekeepers for management of diabetes and other chronic diseasesin China. In recognition of the need for a more patient-centered approach, the Chinese government has piloted a program incorporating methods of diabetes self-management for chronic care: the Happy Life Club (Browning et al., Front in Public Health 2:181, 2015). This program is modeled on a similar program developed in Australia (Kelly et al., Aust J Prim Health 9:186-9, 2003). The ICDMS is an important tool in the implementation of patient-centered programs targeting chronic health issues, and its success is determined by factors, such as frequent contact between patients and doctors and effective website training for patients. This retrospective study used de-identified data from the Fangzhuang (Beijing) intelligent chronic disease management system (ICDMS) database to evaluate the effect of an intelligent chronic disease management system on selected Beijing community patients who have type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods A comparative study before and after ICDMS implementation was performed to evaluate the effect of ICDMS on the rates of follow-up and laboratory examinations, measurement rates of blood glucose and lipids, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and blood lipid levels, as well as the corresponding health parameters. Continuous variables and categorical variables were analyzed using paired t-test and McNemar’s tests, respectively. Results A total of 2451 T2DM patients met inclusion/exclusion criteria. Near-threshold computing brings several times of magnitude improvement in energy efficiency of digital circuits. However, it also introduces several times of deteriorated delay variations caused by process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations. In situ timing monitoring-based adaptive techniques can mitigate excessive timing margins caused by PVT variations, but current frequency and/or voltage tuning methods cause large performance loss. In this paper, we propose a low overhead timing error prediction monitor and a super-fast clock stretching circuit to solve this problem. They are both optimized for near threshold voltage of 0.5 V. When there are timing margins, the frequency will be increased. Until when the timing is intense due to variations, timing monitors will generate a predicted alarm signal. Accordingly, the system clock will be stretched immediately to avoid real timing errors. Applied on a 40-nm CMOS Bitcoin Miner chip, simulation results show that the whole system operating at near-threshold voltage can increase the frequency to up to 2.1× compared with the original non-monitored circuit. Our method can increase the energy efficiency to mitigate near-threshold variations effectively.

Functional recovery after oculomotor nerve injury is very poor. Electrical stimulation has been shown to promote regeneration of injured nerves. We hypothesized that electrical stimulation would improve the functional recovery of injured oculomotor nerves. Oculomotor nerve injury models were created by crushing the right oculomotor nerves of adult dogs. Stimulating electrodes were positioned in both proximal and distal locations of the lesion, and non-continuous rectangular, biphasic current pulses (0.7 V, 5 Hz) were administered 1 hour daily for 2 consecutive weeks. Analysis of the results showed that electrophysiological and morphological recovery of the injured oculomotor nerve was enhanced, indicating that electrical stimulation improved neural regeneration. Thus, this therapy has the potential to promote the recovery of oculomotor nerve dysfunction.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) inhibitor, SC-560, combined with cisplatin or taxol, on angiogenesis in human ovarian cancer xenografts. Mice were treated with intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections of SC-560 6 mg/kg/day, i.p. injections of cisplatin 3 mg/kg every other day and i.p. injections of taxol 20 mg/kg once a week for 21 days. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mRNA levels were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR); microvessel density (MVD) was determined by immunohistochemistry; and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels were determined using ELISA. Expression levels of VEGF mRNA and MVD in treatment groups were inhibited significantly when compared with the control group (p < 0.05 for all), and SC-560 combined with cisplatin displayed a greater reduction in the expression of VEGF and MVD than SC-560 or cisplatin alone (p < 0.05). SC-560 combined with taxol showed a greater inhibition on VEGF mRNA expression than SC-560 or taxol alone (p < 0.05). The level of PGE2 in treatment groups was significantly reduced when compared with the control group (p < 0.01 for all). These findings may indicate that cisplatin or taxol supplemented by SC-560 in human ovarian cancer xenografts enhances the inhibition effect of cisplatin or taxol alone on angiogenesis.

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors in combination with taxol on the expression of cyclin D1 and Ki-67 in human ovarian SKOV-3 carcinoma cells xenograft-bearing mice. The animals were treated with 100 mg/kg celecoxib (a COX-2 selective inhibitor) alone, 3 mg/kg SC-560 (a COX-1 selective inhibitor) alone by gavage twice a day, 20 mg/kg taxol alone by intraperitoneally (i.p.) once a week, or celecoxib/taxol, SC-560/celecoxib, SC-560/taxol or SC-560/celecoxib/taxol, for three weeks. To test the mechanism of the combination treatment, the index of cell proliferation and expression of cyclin D1 in tumor tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry. The mean tumor volume in the treated groups was significantly lower than control (p < 0.05), and in the three-drug combination group, tumor volume was reduced by 58.27% (p < 0.01); downregulated cell proliferation and cyclin D1 expression were statistically significant compared with those of the control group (both p < 0.01). This study suggests that the effects of COX selective inhibitors on the growth of tumors and decreased cell proliferation in a SKOV-3 cells mouse xenograft model were similar to taxol. The three-drug combination showing a better decreasing tendency in growth-inhibitory effect during the experiment may have been caused by suppressing cyclin D1 expression.

Remote estimation of flower number in oilseed rape under different nitrogen (N) treatments is imperative in precision agriculture and field remote sensing, which can help to predict the yield of oilseed rape. In this study, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with Red Green Blue (RGB) and multispectral cameras was used to acquire a series of field images at the flowering stage, and the flower number was manually counted as a reference. Images of the rape field were first classified using K-means method based on Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) L*a*b* space, and the result showed that classified flower coverage area (FCA) possessed a high correlation with the flower number (r2 = 0.89). The relationships between ten commonly used vegetation indices (VIs) extracted from UAV-based RGB and multispectral images and the flower number were investigated, and the VIs of Normalized Green Red Difference Index (NGRDI), Red Green Ratio Index (RGRI) and Modified Green Red Vegetation Index (MGRVI) exhibited the highest correlation to the flower number with the absolute correlation coefficient (r) of 0.91. Random forest (RF) model was developed to predict the flower number, and a good performance was achieved with all UAV variables (r2 = 0.93 and RMSEP = 16.18), while the optimal subset regression (OSR) model was further proposed to simplify the RF model, and a better result with r2 = 0.95 and RMSEP = 14.13 was obtained with the variable combination of RGRI, normalized difference spectral index (NDSI (944, 758)) and FCA. Our findings suggest that combining VIs and image classification from UAV-based RGB and multispectral images possesses the potential of estimating flower number in oilseed rape.

Gene transcribing with alternative polyadenylation (APA) sites leads to mRNA isoforms, which may encode different proteins or harbor different 3'UTRs. APA plays an important role in regulating gene expression network among various physiological processes, such as development, immune responses and cancer. Several methods of library construction for APA study have been developed to apply high-throughput sequencing. However, the requirement of high-input RNA and time-consuming nature of the current methods limited the studies of APA for the samples difficult to obtain. Here, we describe a new method based on our SAPAS in combining in vitro transcription (IVT) and magnetic beads purification. The new IVT-SAPAS provides a rapid and high-parallel procedure for APA library construction with low-input sample, which may be a new robust approach for studying APA.
