This study aimed to explore the expression, clinical significance and the potential targets of miR-144-3p in HCC. Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and a cohort of 95 cases of HCC were applied to investigate aberrant miR-144-3p expression in HCC. A meta-analysis was performed to accumulate data on miR-144-3p expression in HCC based on TCGA, quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). Additionally, the potential regulatory mechanisms of miR-144-3p in HCC were explored by bioinformatics. 6. Entropy-Driven Ostwald Ripening Reversal Promotes the Formation of Low-Platinum Intermetallic Fuel Cell Catalysts.

- Abstract
Strain engineering has been widely used to optimize platinum-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). PtM
3 (M is base metals), a well-known high-compressive-strain intermetallic alloy, shows promise as a low platinum ORR catalyst due to high intrinsic activity. However, during the alloying of Pt with a threefold amount of M, a notable phase separation between Pt and M may occur, with M particles rapidly sintering while Pt particles grow slowly, posing a challenge in achieving a well-defined PtM3 intermetallic alloy. Here, an entropy-driven Ostwald ripening reversal phenomenon is discovered that enables the synthesis of small-sized Pt(FeCoNiCu)3 intermetallic ORR catalysts. High entropy promotes the thermodynamic driving force for the alloying Pt with M, which triggers the Ostwald ripening reversal of sintered FeCoNiCu particles and facilitates the formation of uniform Pt(FeCoNiCu)3 intermetallic catalysts. The prepared Pt(FeCoNiCu)3 catalysts exhibit a high specific activity of 3.82 mA cm-2 , along with a power density of ≈1.3 W cm-2 at 0.67 V and 94 °C with a cathode Pt loading of 0.1 mg cm-2 in H2 -air fuel cell., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)- Published

- Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSIs) related to implants have always been a major challenge for clinical doctors and patients. Clinically, doctors may directly apply antibiotics into the wound to prevent SSIs. However, this strategy is strongly associated with experience of doctors on the amount and the location of antibiotics. Herein, an in situ constructable sol-gel system is developed containing antibiotics during surgical process and validated the efficacy against SSIs in beagles. The system involves chitosan (CS), β-glycerophosphate (β-GP) and vancomycin (VAN), which can be adsorbed onto porous hydroxyapatite (HA) and form VAN-CS/β-GP@HA hydrogel in a short time. The VAN concentration from VAN-CS/β-GP@HA hydrogel is higher than minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at the 21st day in vitro. In an in vivo canine model for the prevention of SSIs in the femoral condyle, VAN-CS/β-GP@HA exhibits excellent biocompatibility, antimicrobial properties, and promotion of bone healing. In all, the CS/β-GP instant sol-gel system is able to in situ encapsulate antibiotics and adhere on artificial bone implants during the surgery, effectively preventing SSIs related to implants., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

8. In-situ atomic tracking of intermetallic compound formation during thermal annealing.

- Abstract
Intermetallic compounds (IMCs) with ordered atomic structure have gained great attention as nanocatalysts for its enhanced activity and stability. Although the reliance of IMC preparation on high-temperature annealing is well known, a comprehensive understanding of the formation mechanisms of IMCs in this process is currently lacking. Here, we employ aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM) to track the formation process of IMCs on carbon supports during in-situ annealing, by taking PtFe as a case study within an industry-relevant impregnation synthesis framework. We directly discern five different stages at the atomic level: initial atomic precursors; Pt cluster formation; Pt-Fe disordered alloying; structurally ordered Pt
3 Fe formation, and final Pt3 Fe-PtFe IMC conversion. In particular, we find that the crucial role of high-temperature annealing resides in facilitating the diffusion of Fe towards Pt, enabling the creation of alloys with the targeted stoichiometric ratio, which in turn provides the thermodynamic driving force for the disorder-to-order transition., (© 2024. 9. Effects and trend of steroid dosage reduction during cardiac surgery: A three-year retrospective analysis at a tertiary medical center.

- Abstract
Background: Current adult cardiac surgery guidelines recommend against the routine use of prophylactic intravenous corticosteroids during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) due to concerns about myocardial injury, despite their potential to reduce postoperative atrial fibrillation. Traditionally, a high dose of 1,000 mg of methylprednisolone was used to attenuate the inflammatory response associated with CPB. Our institution aligned with guideline recommendations and gradually reduced methylprednisolone dosages; thus, we reevaluated the impact on postoperative clinical outcomes., Methods: Our study reviewed 1341 cases from a total of 1680 adult cardiac surgeries performed between June 2019 and May 2022 after excluding cases with off-pump procedures, ventricular assist device implantations, heart transplants, and aortic surgeries requiring systemic circulatory arrest. The study timely sorted periods including a baseline data from 2018, and other three periods since 2019 to analyze the effects of three different methylprednisolone dosage: 0 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg. We assessed the annual trends in methylprednisolone administration and compared morbidity and mortality rates across the groups., Results: We observed a significant decline in steroid use, with no-steroid surgeries increasing from 23% to 66.5% by period 3. Despite the decreased use of steroids, our study showed no increase in mortality, new-onset atrial fibrillation, acute kidney injury, cerebrovascular event and prolonged ventilation when compared to baseline data. Notably, less surgical site infection rate was observed in the no-steroid group., Conclusion: The data indicates that a reduction or discontinuation of steroids during CPB can be performed without compromising patient outcomes. - Abstract
To assess adjuvant treatment patterns on survival in patients with pT3N0M0 esophageal cancer who underwent esophagectomy without neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Stage pT3N0M0 esophageal cancer patients were assessed between 2000 and 2020 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results databases. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare overall survival (OS) among various treatment patterns. We identified 445 patients: 252 (56.6%) received surgery alone, 85 (19.1%) received surgery+chemoradiotherapy, 80 (18.0%) underwent surgery+chemotherapy, and 28 (6.3%) received surgery+ radiotherapy. For squamous cell carcinoma, surgery+chemoradiotherapy ([hazard ratio] HR = 1.04, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.65-1.66; P = 0.873), surgery+chemotherapy (HR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.42-1.22; P = 0.221), and surgery+radiotherapy (HR = 1.33, 95% CI: 0.74-2.39; P = 0.341) had similar OS compared to surgery alone. For adenocarcinoma, surgery+chemoradiotherapy (HR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.36-0.74; P < 0.001) and surgery+chemotherapy (HR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.42-0.87; P = 0.006) had better OS compared to surgery alone. However, surgery+radiotherapy had a comparable OS (HR = 0.81, 95% CI: 0.44-1.49; P = 0.495).Adjuvant treatments did not improve survival in stage pT3N0M0 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients. 11. Testicular choriocarcinoma with pelvic and pulmonary metastases: a case report.

- Abstract
Testicular tumors represent a common form of solid tumor in young men, with choriocarcinoma of the testis being a rare, non-granulomatous germ cell tumor. It accounts for less than 0.3% of all testicular germ cell tumors. Pelvic and pulmonary metastases originating from testicular choriocarcinoma are exceptionally uncommon in men. This study describes a case of a 27-year-old male diagnosed with testicular choriocarcinoma, presenting initially with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. 12. Rest-Activity Rhythm Differences in Acute Rehabilitation Between Poststroke Patients and Non-Brain Disease Controls: Comparative Study.

- Abstract
Background: Circadian rhythm disruptions are a common concern for poststroke patients undergoing rehabilitation and might negatively impact their functional outcomes., Objective: Our research aimed to uncover unique patterns and disruptions specific to poststroke rehabilitation patients and identify potential differences in specific rest-activity rhythm indicators when compared to inpatient controls with non-brain-related lesions, such as patients with spinal cord injuries., Methods: We obtained a 7-day recording with a wearable actigraphy device from 25 poststroke patients (n=9, 36% women; median age 56, IQR 46-71) and 25 age- and gender-matched inpatient control participants (n=15, 60% women; median age 57, IQR 46.5-68.5). To assess circadian rhythm, we used a nonparametric method to calculate key rest-activity rhythm indicators-relative amplitude, interdaily stability, and intradaily variability. Relative amplitude, quantifying rest-activity rhythm amplitude while considering daily variations and unbalanced amplitudes, was calculated as the ratio of the difference between the most active 10 continuous hours and the least active 5 continuous hours to the sum of these 10 and 5 continuous hours. We also examined the clinical correlations between rest-activity rhythm indicators and delirium screening tools, such as the 4 A's Test and the Barthel Index, which assess delirium and activities of daily living., Results: Patients who had a stroke had higher least active 5-hour values compared to the control group (median 4.29, IQR 2.88-6.49 vs median 1.84, IQR 0.67-4.34; P=.008). The most active 10-hour values showed no significant differences between the groups (stroke group: median 38.92, IQR 14.60-40.87; control group: median 31.18, IQR 18.02-46.84; P=.93). The stroke group presented a lower relative amplitude compared to the control group (median 0.74, IQR 0.57-0.85 vs median 0.88, IQR 0.71-0.96; P=.009). Further analysis revealed no significant differences in other rest-activity rhythm metrics between the two groups. Among the patients who had a stroke, a negative correlation was observed between the 4 A's Test scores and relative amplitude (ρ=-0.41; P=.045). 13. Association between serum vitamin E and bacterial vaginitis in women: a cross-sectional study.

Introduction: Bacterial vaginitis (BV) is a common vaginal disease. Vitamin E has been shown to reduce BV by enhancing immune function, but no studies have analyzed the relationship between vitamin E and BV at different BMIs and ages., Method: This study used 2242 participants from four cycles of NHANES 1999-2006 in American. Participants' vitamin E levels were divided into four groups, and analyses such as study population description, stratified analysis, multiple logistic regression analysis, and curve fitting were performed. To perform data processing, the researchers used the statistical package R (The R Foundation; http://www.r-project.org ; version 3.6.3) and Empower Stats software ( www.empowerstats.net , X&Y solutions, Inc. Boston, Massachusetts)., Result: The concentrations of serum vitamin E were negatively correlated with the risk of BV, especially when vitamin E were at 1198-5459ug/dL with (OR = -0.443, 95%CI = 0.447-0.923, P = 0.032) or without (OR = -0.521, 95%CI = 0.421-0.837, P = 0.006) adjustment for variables. At the same time, at lower levels, there was no significant association. Vitamin E supplementation may significantly reduce the risk of BV (p < 0.001). In addition, the risk of having BV decreased and then increased with increasing vitamin E concentrations at high BMI levels (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Vitamin E at moderate to high concentrations may significantly reduce BV risk, says the study, providing clinical evidence for the prevention and the treatment of BV., (© 2024. Background: The Iconographical Falls Efficacy Scale (Icon-FES) uses short phrases and images to depict activities. This study culturally adapted and validated the Taiwan Chinese version of the 30- and 10-item Icon-FESs (Icon-FESs [TW]) in community-dwelling older individuals., Methods: The Icon-FES (TW) was developed using forward-backward translation. A total of 120 community-dwelling older individuals were recruited. They completed the Taiwan Chinese version of the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I [TC]), the Icon-FES (TW), the Mini-Mental State Examination, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) and were assessed using the Berg Balance Scale and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). The Icon-FES (TW) was recompleted 1 week later. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate the overall structure and measurement properties., Results: Cronbach's alpha values of 0.97 and 0.91 indicated that the 30- and 10-item Icon-FESs (TW) had high internal consistency. The 30- and 10-item Icon-FESs (TW) exhibited significantly high correlation with the FES-I (r = 0.88 and 0.84, respectively). Both versions of the Icon-FES (TW) exhibited mild correlation with the physical domain of the WHOQOL-BREF. The 30- and 10-item Icon-FESs (TW) discriminated by intensity of concern and SPPB score. Their test-retest reliability was high (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.79 and 0.80 for the 30- and 10-item Icon-FESs (TW), respectively). 15. Impact of examined lymph node count on survival outcomes in patients with stage T1-2N0M0 small cell lung cancer undergoing surgery: A retrospective cohort study.

- Abstract
To explore the relationship between the count of examined lymph nodes (ELNs) and survival outcomes in patients with stage T1-2N0M0 small cell lung cancer (SCLC) after surgical treatment. We analyzed data from patients with SCLC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. The study focused on examining the correlation between the ELN count and both cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS). This relationship was investigated using restricted cubic spline curves within the framework of multivariable Cox regression models. The cutoff value for both CSS and OS was 7 ELN counts. Patients with ELN < 7 had a median CSS of 64 months, significantly lower than 123 months of patients with ELN ≥ 7 (P = .012). Multivariable Cox regression analysis indicated that ELN ≥ 7 was an independent prognostic factor for CSS (hazard ratio = 0.50, 95% confidence interval: 0.30-0.83; P = .007). Similarly, Patients with ELN < 7 had a median OS of 41 months for patients with ELN < 7, compared to 103 months for those with ELN ≥ 7 (P = .004). Multivariable Cox regression analysis confirmed that ELN ≥ 7 was an independent prognostic factor for OS (hazard ratio = 0.54, 95% confidence interval: 0.36-0.81; P = .003). 16. Primulaweiliei (Primulaceae), a new species from Hubei, Central China.

- Abstract
In this study, we describe and illustrate a new species, Primulaweiliei L.S.Yang, Z.K.Wu & G.W.Hu, from the Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province in Central China. It is morphologically assigned to Primulasect.Aleuritia based on its dwarf and hairless habit, long petiole, fruits longer than calyx and covered by farina on the scape. This new species is similar to P.gemmifera and P.munroisubsp.yargongensis in the same section, but it can be distinguished by its smaller calyxes, homostylous flowers, corolla tube throat without annular appendage and only 1-2 flowers in each inflorescence. 17. Enhancing Surface Strain of Intermetallic Fuel Cell Catalysts by Composition-Induced Phase Transition.

The lattice parameter of platinum-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs), which correlates with the intrinsic activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), can be modulated by crystal phase engineering. However, the controlled preparation of IMCs with unconventional crystal structures remains highly challenging. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of carbon-supported PtCu-based IMC catalysts with an unconventional L1
0 structure by a composition-regulated strategy. Experiment and machine learning reveal that the thermodynamically favorable structure changes from L11 to L10 when slight Cu atoms are substituted with Co. Benefiting from crystal-phase-induced strain enhancement, the prepared L10 -type PtCu0.8 Co0.2 catalyst exhibits much-enhanced mass and specific activities of 1.82 A mgPt -1 and 3.27 mA cmPt -2 , which are 1.91 and 1.73 times higher than those of the L11 -type PtCu catalyst, respectively. Our work highlights the important role of crystal phase in determining the surface strain of IMCs, and opens a promising avenue for the rational preparation of IMCs with different crystal phases by doping.- Published

18. Phase-Transition-Induced Surface Reconstruction of Rh 1 Site in Intermetallic Alloy for Propane Dehydrogenation.

The fine-tuning of the geometric and electronic structures of active sites plays a crucial role in catalysis. However, the intricate entanglement between the two aspects results in a lack of interpretable design for active sites, posing a challenge in developing high-performance catalysts. Here, we find that surface reconstruction induced by phase transition in intermetallic alloys enables synergistic geometric and electronic structure modulation, creating a desired active site microenvironment for propane dehydrogenation. The resulting electron-rich four-coordinate Rh
1 site in the RhGe0.5 Ga0.5 intermetallic alloy can accelerate the desorption of propylene and suppress the side reaction and thus exhibits a propylene selectivity of ∼98% with a low deactivation constant of 0.002 h-1 under propane dehydrogenation at 550 °C. Furthermore, we design a computational workflow to validate the rationality of the microenvironment modulation induced by the phase transition in an intermetallic alloy.- Published

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of various treatment approaches in stage T4b esophageal cancer patients., Materials and Methods: Data were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results databases, covering patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer between 2000 and 2020. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to assess cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) across different treatment patterns., Results: The study included 482 patients: 222 (46.1%) received chemoradiotherapy, 58 (12.0%) underwent radiotherapy alone, 37 (7.7%) received chemotherapy alone, 50 (10.4%) underwent surgery, and 115 (23.8%) received no treatment. Median CSS were 12, 4, 6, 18, and 1 month for chemoradiotherapy, radiotherapy alone, chemotherapy alone, surgery, and non-treatment groups. Median OS for these groups were 11, 3, 6, 17, and 1 month, respectively. Multivariable proportional hazard regression analysis revealed that patients who underwent surgery experienced significantly improved CSS (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.42, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.24-0.72; P = 0.002) and OS (HR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.28-0.74; P = 0.002) compared to those receiving chemoradiotherapy after propensity score matching., Conclusions: Esophagectomy, with or without radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy, results in better survival outcomes than chemoradiotherapy in patients with stage T4b esophageal cancer.

21. Metal-Sulfur Interfaces as the Primary Active Sites for Catalytic Hydrogenations.

- Abstract
The determination of catalytically active sites is crucial for understanding the catalytic mechanism and providing guidelines for the design of more efficient catalysts. However, the complex structure of supported metal nanocatalysts (e.g., support, metal surface, and metal-support interface) still presents a big challenge. In particular, many studies have demonstrated that metal-support interfaces could also act as the primary active sites in catalytic reactions, which is well elucidated in oxide-supported metal nanocatalysts but is rarely reported in carbon-supported metal nanocatalysts. Here, we fill the above gap and demonstrate that metal-sulfur interfaces in sulfur-doped carbon-supported metal nanocatalysts are the primary active sites for several catalytic hydrogenation reactions. A series of metal nanocatalysts with similar sizes but different amounts of metal-sulfur interfaces were first constructed and characterized. Taking Ir for quinoline hydrogenation as an example, it was found that their catalytic activities were proportional to the amount of the Ir-S interface. Further experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the adsorption and activation of quinoline occurred on the Ir atoms at the Ir-S interface. Similar phenomena were found in p -chloronitrobenzene hydrogenation over the Pt-S interface and benzoic acid hydrogenation over the Ru-S interface. All of these findings verify the predominant activity of metal-sulfur interfaces for catalytic hydrogenation reactions and contribute to the comprehensive understanding of metal-support interfaces in supported nanocatalysts.

Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely detected in pregnant women and associated with adverse outcomes related to impaired placental function. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a dimeric glycoprotein hormone that can indicate placental toxicity., Objectives: Our aim was to quantify the association of serum PFAS with placental hCG, measured as an intact molecule (hCG), as free alpha-( hCG α ) and beta-subunits ( hCG β ), and as a hyperglycosylated form (h-hCG), and evaluate effect measure modification by social determinants and by fetal sex., Methods: Data were collected from 326 pregnant women enrolled from 2015 to 2019 in the UPSIDE study in Rochester, New York. hCG forms were normalized for gestational age at the time of blood draw in the first trimester [multiple of the median (MoM)]. Seven PFAS were measured in second-trimester maternal serum. Multivariate imputation by chained equations and inverse probability weighting were used to evaluate robustness of linear associations. PFAS mixture effects were estimated by Bayesian kernel machine regression., Results: Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) [ hCG β : 0.29 log MoM units per log PFHxS; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.08, 0.51] and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) (hCG: - 0.09 ; 95% CI: - 0.16 , - 0.02 ) were associated with hCG in the single chemical and mixture analyses. The PFAS mixture was negatively associated with hCG α and positively with hCG β . Subgroup analyses revealed that PFAS associations with hCG differed by maternal race/ethnicity and education. Perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) was associated with hCG β only in Black participants ( - 0.23 ; 95% CI: - 0.37 , - 0.09 ) and in participants with high school education or less ( - 0.14 ; 95% CI: - 0.26 , - 0.02 ); conversely, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) was negatively associated with hCG α only in White participants ( - 0.15 ; 95% CI: - 0.27 , - 0.03 ) and with hCG β only in participants with a college education or greater ( - 0.19 ; 95% CI: - 0.36 , - 0.01 ). These findings were robust to testing for selection bias, confounding bias, and left truncation bias where PFAS detection frequency was < 100 % . Two associations were negative in male (and null in female) pregnancies: Perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) with hCG α , and PFNA with h-hCG., Conclusions: Evidence was strongest for the association between PFHxS and PFDA with hCG in all participants and for PFPeA and PFNA within subgroups defined by social determinants and fetal sex. PFAS mixture associations with hCG α and hCG β differed, suggesting subunit-specific types of toxicity and/or regulation. 23. Role of Postoperative Radiotherapy on High-Risk Stage pIIIA-N2 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients After Complete Resection and Adjuvant Chemotherapy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of postoperative radiotherapy in high-risk patients with stage pIIIA-N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) following complete resection and adjuvant chemotherapy., Methods: Data from NSCLC patients within the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were analyzed. The study examined the association between lymph node ratio (LNR) and both cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) using restricted cubic spline curves. Patients were categorized into high- and low-risk groups based on established LNR cut-off values, and survival outcomes were compared between those receiving postoperative radiotherapy and those who did not within the high-risk group., Results: The study included 1,690 patients. An LNR threshold of 0.29 was identified for both CSS and OS. Patients with an LNR ≥ 0.29 demonstrated significantly worse CSS (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.56, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.37 - 1.78; P < 0.001) and OS (HR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.28 - 1.62; P < 0.001) compared to those with an LNR < 0.29. In the high-risk group (LNR ≥ 0.29), postoperative radiotherapy did not significantly affect CSS (HR = 0.98, 95% CI: 0.82 - 1.17; P = 0.809) or OS (HR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.81 - 1.11; P = 0.533)., Conclusions: LNR is a significant prognostic factor in patients with stage pIIIA-N2 NSCLC post complete resection and adjuvant chemotherapy. A higher LNR (≥ 0.29) is associated with poorer CSS and OS. However, postoperative radiotherapy does not confer survival benefits in these high-risk patients. Our findings suggest that postoperative radiotherapy should not be routinely performed in this subgroup. Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) combined with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) versus CCRT alone in patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma., Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma who received either CCRT alone or CCRT combined with ICIs from April 2019 to February 2023. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), and the secondary endpoint was overall survival (OS)., Results: A total of 101 patients were enrolled, with 58 undergoing CCRT alone and 43 receiving CCRT+ICI. The CCRT+ICI group demonstrated a higher complete response rate compared to the CCRT alone group (11.6% vs. 1.7%, P = 0.037). However, no significant difference was observed in 1-year PFS (58.9% vs. 55.2%; hazard ratio [HR] = 1.26, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.70-2.26; P = 0.445) or 1-year OS (70.8% vs. 75.9%; HR = 1.21, 95% CI: 0.58-2.53; P = 0.613) between CCRT+ICI and CCRT alone groups. The CCRT alone group experienced a higher incidence of leukopenia of any grade (93.1% vs. 76.7%, P = 0.039) but a lower incidence of pneumonitis of any grade (36.2% vs. 65.1%, P = 0.008)., Conclusion: CCRT+ICI may not lead to improved survival outcomes compared to CCRT alone in patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. - Abstract
Fungal infections contribute substantially to human morbidity and mortality. A particular concern is the high rate of mortality associated with invasive fungal infections, which often exceeds 50.0% despite the availability of several antifungal drugs. Herein, we show a self-assembling antifungal peptide (AFP), which is able to bind to chitin on the fungal cell wall and in situ form AFP nanofibers, wrapping fungi. As a result, AFP limits the proliferation of fungi, slows down the morphological transformation of biphasic fungi, and inhibits the adhesion of fungi to host cells and the formation of biofilms. Compared to the broad-spectrum antifungal fluconazole, AFP achieved a comparable inhibitory effect (MIC
50 = 3.5 μM) on fungal proliferation. In addition, AFP significantly inhibited the formation of fungal biofilms with the inhibition rate of 69.6% at 1 μM, better than fluconazole (17.2% at 1 μM). In a skin infection model of mice, it was demonstrated that AFP showed significantly superior efficacy to fluconazole. In the systemic candidiasis mouse model, AFP showed similar efficacy to first-line antifungal amphotericin B (AmpB) and anidulafungin (AFG). This study provides a promising wrapping strategy for anti-fungal infection.- Published

26. Treatment Patterns and Survival Outcomes in Patients With Stage T1-2N0M0 Small Cell Lung Cancer Undergoing Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: The aim of the study was to delineate the treatment modalities and survival outcomes in patients with stage T1-2N0M0 small cell lung cancer (SCLC) who underwent surgery., Methods: SCLC patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results databases between 2000 and 2020 were investigated. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was employed to assess cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) across diverse therapeutic strategies., Results: The study included 190 patients. Treatment modalities included surgery alone in 65 patients (34.2%), surgery + chemotherapy in 70 patients (36.8%), surgery + radiotherapy in three patients (1.6%), and surgery + chemoradiotherapy in 52 patients (27.4%). The median CSS remained undetermined for the surgery alone group, whereas it was 123 and 113 months for the surgery + chemotherapy and surgery + chemoradiotherapy groups. Median OS was 47, 84, and 50 months for these groups. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that patients receiving surgery + chemotherapy exhibited a significantly enhanced OS (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.60, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.38 - 0.94; P = 0.028) compared to those undergoing surgery alone. However, the integration of radiotherapy did not improve OS compared to surgery alone (HR = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.44 - 1.15; P = 0.170)., Conclusion: Adjuvant chemotherapy improved OS compared to surgery alone. The first trimester of pregnancy ranks high in priority when minimizing harmful exposures, given the wide-ranging types of organogenesis occurring between 4- and 12-weeks' gestation. One way to quantify potential harm to the fetus in the first trimester is to measure a corollary effect on the placenta. Placental biomarkers are widely present in maternal circulation, cord blood, and placental tissue biopsied at birth or at the time of pregnancy termination. Here we evaluate ten diverse pathways involving molecules expressed in the first trimester human placenta based on their relevance to normal fetal development and to the hypothesis of placental-fetal endocrine disruption (perturbation in development that results in abnormal endocrine function in the offspring), namely: human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), thyroid hormone regulation, peroxisome proliferator activated receptor protein gamma (PPARγ), leptin, transforming growth factor beta, epiregulin, growth differentiation factor 15, small nucleolar RNAs, serotonin, and vitamin D. Some of these are well-established as biomarkers of placental-fetal endocrine disruption, while others are not well studied and were selected based on discovery analyses of the placental transcriptome. A literature search on these biomarkers summarizes evidence of placenta-specific production and regulation of each biomarker, and their role in fetal reproductive tract, brain, and other specific domains of fetal development. 28. Fall risk classification with posturographic parameters in community-dwelling older adults: a machine learning and explainable artificial intelligence approach.

Background: Computerized posturography obtained in standing conditions has been applied to classify fall risk for older adults or disease groups. Combining machine learning (ML) approaches is superior to traditional regression analysis for its ability to handle complex data regarding its characteristics of being high-dimensional, non-linear, and highly correlated. The study goal was to use ML algorithms to classify fall risks in community-dwelling older adults with the aid of an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approach to increase interpretability., Methods: A total of 215 participants were included for analysis. The input information included personal metrics and posturographic parameters obtained from a tracker-based posturography of four standing postures. Two classification criteria were used: with a previous history of falls and the timed-up-and-go (TUG) test. We used three meta-heuristic methods for feature selection to handle the large numbers of parameters and improve efficacy, and the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method was used to display the weights of the selected features on the model., Results: The results showed that posturographic parameters could classify the participants with TUG scores higher or lower than 10 s but were less effective in classifying fall risk according to previous fall history. Feature selections improved the accuracy with the TUG as the classification label, and the Slime Mould Algorithm had the best performance (accuracy: 0.72 to 0.77, area under the curve: 0.80 to 0.90). In contrast, feature selection did not improve the model performance significantly with the previous fall history as a classification label. The SHAP values also helped to display the importance of different features in the model., Conclusion: Posturographic parameters in standing can be used to classify fall risks with high accuracy based on the TUG scores in community-dwelling older adults. Using feature selection improves the model's performance. The results highlight the potential utility of ML algorithms and XAI to provide guidance for developing more robust and accurate fall classification models. Purpose: To investigate the treatment patterns and survival outcomes in patients with unresectable Stage III EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)., Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with unresectable Stage III EGFR-mutated NSCLC spanning from 2012 to 2022. Treatment patterns were outlined, and survival comparisons between different treatment groups were performed using Kaplan-Meier methods., Results: A total of 88 patients were included: 62.5% received TKI alone, 26.1% received TKI+chemotherapy, 4.5% received radiotherapy, 4.5% participated in clinical trials, and 2.4% received TKI+antiangiogenic drugs. Prior to propensity score matching, TKI+chemotherapy and TKI alone groups demonstrated similar progression-free survival (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.56, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.87-2.80; P = 0.134), overall survival (HR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.59-2.13; P = 0.733), and locoregional-free survival (HR = 1.46; 95% CI: 0.75-2.81; P = 0.267). However, TKI+chemotherapy showed reduced distant metastasis-free survival compared to TKI alone (HR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.11-5.18; P = 0.022). After propensity score matching, no significant differences were observed in progression-free survival (P = 0.435), overall survival (P = 0.205), locoregional-free survival (P = 0.706), and distant metastasis-free survival (P = 0.171) between the TKI+chemotherapy and TKI alone groups., Conclusions: The addition of chemotherapy to TKI did not enhance survival outcomes compared to TKI monotherapy in patients with unresectable Stage III EGFR-mutated NSCLC.

30. Machine-learning-accelerated design of high-performance platinum intermetallic nanoparticle fuel cell catalysts.

Carbon supported PtCo intermetallic alloys are known to be one of the most promising candidates as low-platinum oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. Nevertheless, the intrinsic trade-off between particle size and ordering degree of PtCo makes it challenging to simultaneously achieve a high specific activity and a large active surface area. Here, by machine-learning-accelerated screenings from the immense configuration space, we are able to statistically quantify the impact of chemical ordering on thermodynamic stability. We find that introducing of Cu/Ni into PtCo can provide additional stabilization energy by inducing Co-Cu/Ni disorder, thus facilitating the ordering process and achieveing an improved tradeoff between specific activity and active surface area. N-, C-, O-, S-coordinated single-metal-sites (SMSs) have garnered significant attention due to the potential for significantly enhanced catalytic capabilities resulting from charge redistribution. However, significant challenges persist in the precise design of well-defined such SMSs, and the fundamental comprehension has long been impeded in case-by-case reports using carbon materials as investigation targets. In this work, the well-defined molecular catalysts with N
3 C1 -anchored SMSs, i.e., N-confused metalloporphyrins (NCPor-Ms), are calculated for their catalytic oxygen reduction activity. Then, NCPor-Ms with corresponding N4 -anchored SMSs (metalloporphyrins, Por-Ms), are synthesized for catalytic activity evaluation. Among all, NCPor-Co reaches the top in established volcano plots. NCPor-Co also shows the highest half-wave potential of 0.83 V vs. RHE, which is much better than that of Por-Co (0.77 V vs. RHE). Electron-rich, low band gap and regulated d-band center contribute to the high activity of NCPor-Co. This study delves into the examination of well-defined asymmetric SMS molecular catalysts, encompassing both theoretical and experimental facets. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused tremendous morbidity and mortality worldwide. The large number of post-COVID survivors has drawn attention to the management of post-COVID condition, known as long COVID. This review examines current knowledge of long COVID, regarding its epidemiology, mechanism, and clinical presentations in both adults and children. We also review the rehabilitation principles, modules, and effects, and share Taiwan's efforts to provide a top-down, nationwide care framework for long COVID patients. Dyspnea, chronic cough, and fatigue are the most commonly reported symptoms in the first 6 months after infection, but cognitive impairment and psychological symptoms may persist beyond this time. Several possible mechanisms behind these symptoms were proposed, but remained unconfirmed. These symptoms negatively impact individuals' function, activities, participation and quality of life. Rehabilitation is a key element of management to achieve functional improvement. Early management should start with comprehensive evaluation and identification of red flags. Exercise-based therapy, an essential part of management of long COVID, can be conducted with different modules, including telerehabilitation. Post-exertional symptom exacerbation and orthostatic hypotension should be carefully monitored during exercise. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) from the pathogenic bacteria Nesseria gonorrhoeae and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) have recently been validated as antibacterial drug targets. Here we explored the inhibition of the α-CA from N. gonorrhoeae (α-NgCA), of α- and γ-class enzymes from Enterococcus faecium (α-EfCA and γ-EfCA) with a panel of aliphatic, heterocyclic and aryl-alkyl primary/secondary monothiocarbamates (MTCs). α-NgCA was inhibited in vitro with K
I s ranging from 0.367 to 0.919 µM. The compounds inhibited the α-EfCA and γ-EfCA with KI ranges of 0.195-0.959 µM and of 0.149-1.90 µM, respectively. Some MTCs were also investigated for their inhibitory effects on the growth of clinically-relevant N. gonorrhoeae and VRE strains. No inhibitory effects on the growth of VRE were noted for all MTCs, whereas one compound ( 13 ) inhibited the growth N. gonorrhoeae strains at concentrations ranging from 16 to 64 µg/mL. This suggests that compound 13 may be a potential antibacterial agent against N. gonorrhoeae .- Published

34. Heck Migratory Insertion Catalyzed by a Single Pt Atom Site.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have generated excitement for their potential to downsize metal particles to the atomic limit with engineerable local environments and improved catalytic reactivities and selectivities. However, successes have been limited to small-molecule transformations with little progress toward targeting complex-building reactions, such as metal-catalyzed cross-coupling. Using a supercritical carbon-dioxide-assisted protocol, we report a heterogeneous single-atom Pt-catalyzed Heck reaction, which provides the first C-C bond-forming migratory insertion on SACs. Our quantum mechanical computations establish the reaction mechanism to involve a novel C-rich coordination site (i.e., PtC
4 ) that demonstrates an unexpected base effect. Notably, the base was found to transiently modulate the coordination environment to allow migratory insertion into an M-C species, a process with a high steric impediment with no previous example on SACs. The studies showcase how SACs can introduce coordination structures that have remained underexplored in catalyst design. These findings offer immense potential for transferring the vast and highly versatile reaction manifold of migratory-insertion-based bond-forming protocols to heterogeneous SACs.- Published

Esophageal cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Approximately 50% of patients have locally advanced disease. The CROSS and NEOCRTEC5010 trials have demonstrated that neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery is the standard treatment for patients with resectable disease. However, a pathological complete response is frequently not achieved, and most patients have a poor prognosis. The CheckMate 577 trial demonstrates that nivolumab adjuvant therapy improves disease-free survival in patents without a pathological complete response. However, there are still numerous clinical questions of concern that remain controversial based on the results of the subgroup analysis. 36. Promoting ordering degree of intermetallic fuel cell catalysts by low-melting-point metal doping.

Carbon supported intermetallic compound nanoparticles with high activity and stability are promising cathodic catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. However, the synthesis of intermetallic catalysts suffers from large diffusion barrier for atom ordering, resulting in low ordering degree and limited performance. We demonstrate a low-melting-point metal doping strategy for the synthesis of highly ordered L1
0 -type M-doped PtCo (M = Ga, Pb, Sb, Cu) intermetallic catalysts. We find that the ordering degree of the M-doped PtCo catalysts increases with the decrease of melting point of M. Theoretic studies reveal that the low-melting-point metal doping can decrease the energy barrier for atom diffusion. The prepared highly ordered Ga-doped PtCo catalyst exhibits a large mass activity of 1.07 A mgPt -1 at 0.9 V in H2 -O2 fuel cells and a rated power density of 1.05 W cm-2 in H2 -air fuel cells, with a Pt loading of 0.075 mgPt cm-2 ., (© 2023. The paper explores the evolution of "bone-approaching" acupuncture, its effect target and mechanism. The concrete operation procedure of "bone-approaching" method is recorded originally in Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor) as short needling and Shu needling (referring to the category of the five needling technique). The periosteum is the most effective stimulation target of "bone-approaching" acupuncture for analgesia, regaining consciousness and regulating spirit. The "bone-approaching" acupuncture is not only prominently effective on bone bi syndrome, but also has the unique effect on painful, encephalogenic and emotional diseases. The paper summarizes and improves "bone-approaching" acupuncture, i.e. "touching bone surface" with needle tip by slow insertion, "touching bone surface" without pain by swift insertion and "touching bone" with needle body by oblique insertion. It contributes to the inheritance, development and supplementation to the bone needling techniques in Huangdi Neijing and is significant for broadening the clinical application range of acupuncture.

The viral spike (S) protein on the surface of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors on the host cells, facilitating its entry and infection. Here, functionalized nanofibers targeting the S protein with peptide sequences of IRQFFKK, WVHFYHK and NSGGSVH, which are screened from a high-throughput one-bead one-compound screening strategy, are designed and prepared. The flexible nanofibers support multiple binding sites and efficiently entangle SARS-CoV-2, forming a nanofibrous network that blocks the interaction between the S protein of SARS-CoV-2 and the ACE2 on host cells, and efficiently reduce the invasiveness of SARS-CoV-2. Background: Intellectual property (IP) is a substantial competitive advantage in the health care industry. However, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for open innovation and collaboration for the greater good. Despite this, the industry faces challenges with innovation owing to organizational and departmental barriers. A secure platform is necessary to facilitate IP sharing without compromising the rights of IP owners., Objective: This study proposes a blockchain-based framework to secure IP transactions in health care and bring social impact., Methods: This study reviews existing researches, publications, practical cases, firm and organization websites, and conferences related to blockchain technology, blockchain in health care, blockchain in IP management, IP pledge research, and practice of IP management blockchain. The platform architecture has 7 components: pledgers, advanced research technology (ART), IP pledge platforms, IP databases, health care research, seeking ART, and transaction condition setting. These components work together seamlessly to support the sharing and pledging of ART and knowledge, while ensuring the platform's transparency, security, and trust., Results: The open IP pledge framework can promote technology dissemination and use, reduce research and development costs, foster collaboration, and serve the public interest. Medical organizations' leadership and support and active participation from stakeholders are necessary for success. By leveraging blockchain technology, the platform ensures tamper-proof and transparent transactions and protects the rights of IP owners. In addition, the platform offers incentive mechanisms through pledge tokens that encourage stakeholders to share their ART and contribute to the platform., Conclusions: Overall, the proposed framework can facilitate technological innovation, tackle various challenges, and secure IP transactions. It provides a secure platform for stakeholders to share their IP without compromising their rights, promoting collaboration and progress in the health care industry. 40. Dietary Curcumin Supplementation Could Improve Muscle Quality, Antioxidant Enzyme Activities and the Gut Microbiota Structure of Pelodiscus sinensis .

This experiment aimed to assess the impact of different dietary curcumin (CM) levels on growth, muscle quality, serum-biochemical parameters, antioxidant-enzyme activities, gut microbiome, and liver transcriptome in Chinese soft-shelled turtles ( Pelodiscus sinensis ). Five experimental diets were formulated to include graded levels of curcumin at 0 (control, CM0), 0.5 (CM0.5), 1 (CM1), 2 (CM2) and 4 g/kg (CM4). Each diet was randomly distributed to quadruplicate groups of turtles (164.33 ± 5.5 g) for 6 weeks. Our findings indicated that dietary curcumin supplementation did not have a significant influence on growth performance ( p > 0.05); however, it significantly improved the muscular texture profiles ( p < 0.05). Serum total superoxide dismutase (SOD), liver catalase (CAT), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) activities increased significantly as dietary curcumin levels rose from 0.5 to 4 g/kg ( p < 0.05). Dietary curcumin supplementation improved gut microbiota composition, as evidenced by an increase in the proportion of dominant bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Flavobacterium . Liver transcriptome analysis revealed that curcumin altered metabolic pathways in the liver. In conclusion, based on the evaluation of the activities of SOD in serum and CAT in liver under current experimental design, it was determined that the appropriate dietary curcumin supplementation for Chinese soft-shelled turtles is approximately 3.9 g/kg.

In supported metal catalysts, the supports would strongly interact with the metal components instead of just acting as a carrier, which greatly affects both of their synthesis and catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability. Carbon is considered as very important but inert support and thus hard to induce strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). This mini-review highlights that sulfur-a documented poison reagent for metal catalysts-when doped in a carbon supports can induce diverse SMSI phenomenon, including electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI), classic SMSI, and reactive metal-support interaction (RMSI). Purpose: To compare survivals between unresectable stage III and stage IV EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients receiving first-line EGFR-TKI., Materials and Methods: Unresectable stage III and stage IV EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients were investigated from September 2012 to May 2022. Patients received EGFR-TKI as the first-line treatment. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method and propensity score matching (PSM) analyses., Results: A total of 558 patients were included: 478 (85.66%) patients were stage IV and 80 (14.34%) patients were stage III. Before PSM, stage III patients showed a better median PFS (15 vs. 13 months; P =0.026) and a similar median OS (29 vs. 30 months; P =0.820) compared to stage IV patients. Stage IV was an independent prognostic factor for PFS [hazard ratio (HR)=1.47, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06-2.04; P =0.021], but not for OS (HR=1.11, 95% CI: 0.77-1.60; P =0.560). After PSM, a better median PFS (15 vs. 12 months; P =0.016) and a similar median OS (29 vs. 30 months; P =0.960) were found between stage III and stage IV patients., Conclusions: OS was similar between unresectable stage III and stage IV EGFR-mutated NSCLC patients receiving EGFR-TKI as the first-line treatment.

Tricaine is a common anesthetic used in the long-distance transport of live fish. Recently, its negative impact on human health has aroused extensive concern. Thus, rapid and reliable techniques for tricaine residue analysis are essential to ensuring the quality of aquatic products. Herein, a specific anti-tricaine monoclonal antibody (Mab) was prepared. Then, a sensitive and robust ratiometric fluorescence ELISA (RF-ELISA) was constructed for detecting tricaine based on two MnO
2 nanoflake-mediated (MnO2 NFs) fluorogenic reactions. In the RF-ELISA protocol, MnO2 NFs with oxidase-like activity can trigger the formation of fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD) with an emissive peak at 570 nm from non-fluorescent o -phenylenediamine (OPD), while ascorbic acid (AA) can decompose MnO2 NFs to lose their oxidase-mimicking activity, which is accompanied by the oxidation of AA into dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA). The subsequent reaction between the generated DHAA and OPD will result in the production of 3-(1,2-dihydroxy ethyl)furo[3,4- b ]quinoxalin-1(3H)-on (DFQ), which has a potent emission peak at 445 nm. By virtue of the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) labeled on the antibody, which can catalyze the production of AA from ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP), the concentration of tricaine can be linked to the variation of the RF signal (F445 /F570 ) via a competitive immunoreaction. After optimization, RF-ELISA displayed a detection limit (LOD) of 0.28 ng/mL toward tricaine (in buffer solution), which was 376-fold lower than that of the traditional colorimetric ELISA. For practical application, the LODs of RF-ELISA for tricaine detection in shrimp and tilapia samples were determined to be 2.8 and 5.6 ng/g, respectively. Recoveries for spiked shrimp and tilapia samples, as well as the validation data from LC-MS/MS, showed that RF-ELISA exhibited good accuracy, precision, and reliability. This RF-ELISA protocol opened up new ways for tricaine and other-target analyses in food safety detection.- Published

44. Alloying Matters for Ordering: Synthesis of Highly Ordered PtCo Intermetallic Catalysts for Fuel Cells.

Porous carbon-supported atomically ordered intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are promising electrocatalysts in boosting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cell applications. However, the formation mechanism of IMC structures under high temperatures is poorly understood, which hampers the synthesis of highly ordered IMC catalysts with promoted ORR performance. Here, we employ high-temperature X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopic elemental mapping techniques to study the formation process of IMCs, by taking PtCo for example, in an industry-relevant impregnation synthesis. We find that high-temperature annealing is crucial in promoting the formation of alloy particles with a stoichiometric Co/Pt ratio, which in turn is the precondition for transforming the disordered alloys to ordered intermetallic structures at a relatively low temperature. - Abstract
Background: Phthalate exposure in pregnancy is typically estimated using maternal urinary phthalate metabolite levels. Our aim was to evaluate the association of urinary and placental tissue phthalates, and to explore the role of maternal and pregnancy characteristics that may bias estimates., Methods: Fifty pregnancies were selected from the CANDLE Study, recruited from 2006 to 2011 in Tennessee. Linear models were used to estimate associations of urinary phthalates (2
nd , 3rd trimesters) and placental tissue phthalates (birth). Potential confounders and modifiers were evaluated in categories: temporality (time between urine and placenta sample), fetal sex, demographics, social advantage, reproductive history, medication use, nutrition and adiposity. Molar and quantile normalized phthalates were calculated to facilitate comparison of placental and urinary levels., Results: Metabolites detectable in >80% of both urine and placental samples were MEP, MnBP, MBzP, MECPP, MEOHP, MEHHP, and MEHP. MEP was most abundant in urine (geometric mean [GM] 7.00 ×102 nmol/l) and in placental tissue (GM 2.56 ×104 nmol/l). MEHP was the least abundant in urine (GM 5.32 ×101 nmol/l) and second most abundant in placental tissue (2.04 ×104 nmol/l). In aggregate, MEHP differed the most between urine and placenta (2.21 log units), and MEHHP differed the least (0.07 log units). MECPP was positively associated between urine and placenta (regression coefficient: 0.31 95% CI 0.09, 0.53). Other urine-placenta metabolite associations were modified by measures of social advantage, reproductive history, medication use, and adiposity., Conclusion: Phthalates were ubiquitous in 50 full-term placental samples, as has already been shown in maternal urine. MEP and MEHP were the most abundant. Measurement and comparison of urinary and placental phthalates can advance knowledge on phthalate toxicity in pregnancy and provide insight into the validity and accuracy of relying on maternal urinary concentrations to estimate placental exposures., Impact Statement: This is the first report of correlations/associations of urinary and placental tissue phthalates in human pregnancy. Epidemiologists have relied exclusively on maternal urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations to assess exposures in pregnant women and risk to their fetuses. Even though it has not yet been confirmed empirically, it is widely assumed that urinary concentrations are strongly and positively correlated with placental and fetal levels. Our data suggest that may not be the case, and these associations may vary by phthalate metabolite and associations may be modified by measures of social advantage, reproductive history, medication use, and adiposity., (© 2022. 47. Non-covalent ligand-oxide interaction promotes oxygen evolution.

- Abstract
Strategies to generate high-valence metal species capable of oxidizing water often employ composition and coordination tuning of oxide-based catalysts, where strong covalent interactions with metal sites are crucial. However, it remains unexplored whether a relatively weak "non-bonding" interaction between ligands and oxides can mediate the electronic states of metal sites in oxides. Here we present an unusual non-covalent phenanthroline-CoO
2 interaction that substantially elevates the population of Co4+ sites for improved water oxidation. We find that phenanthroline only coordinates with Co2+ forming soluble Co(phenanthroline)2 (OH)2 complex in alkaline electrolytes, which can be deposited as amorphous CoOx Hy film containing non-bonding phenanthroline upon oxidation of Co2+ to Co3+/4+ . This in situ deposited catalyst demonstrates a low overpotential of 216 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and sustainable activity over 1600 h with Faradaic efficiency above 97%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the presence of phenanthroline can stabilize CoO2 through the non-covalent interaction and generate polaron-like electronic states at the Co-Co center., (© 2023. Enlarging the distance between intermetallic particles on high-surface-area carbon black supports could significantly suppress the metal sintering in high-temperature annealing. The prepared Rh

- Abstract
Blue fluorescent carbon dots (PCDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method with Partridge tea. The ethanol extract of Partridge tea (PEE) was found to emit red fluorescence. Thus, a novel ratiometric sensor was constructed by simply mixing the two fluorophores derived from Partridge tea. The presence of tetracycline (TET) at lower concentrations enhanced the emission peak at 508 nm of PCDs and had a negligible effect on the emission peak at 680 nm of PEE. TET at higher concentrations led to quenching both the fluorescence of PCDs and PEE via inner filter effect and fluorescence resonance energy transfer, separately. Good linearities for the detection of TET were obtained in the ranges 0.67 to 15.00 μM and 33.33 to 266.67 μM, with limit of detection of 0.095 μM. The sensor was successfully applied to detect TET in lake water and milk samples with good recoveries ranging from 93.27 ± 4.04% to 107.30 ± 6.16%. This study provided a simple, selective, sensitive, rapid, and environmentally friendly method of monitoring TET residues in the environment and food., (© 2023. 50. Discriminative Changes in Sitting and Standing Postural Steadiness in Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain.

- Abstract
Postural control is reduced in patients with low back pain (LBP), which is considered an important factor attributing to the chronicity of LBP and a target for treatment. It is proposed that the changes in postural steadiness in sitting reflect the trunk control better than those in standing, but the previous study results are inconsistent. Thus, this study aimed to compare trunk sway parameters during standing and sitting between patients with chronic LPB (CLBP) and controls using a tracker-based posturography to record the trunk displacement trajectories at the lumbar level (TD [Formula: see text]. A total of 64 participants (32 patients with CLBP and 32 pain-free controls) were included in this study. The postural sway was measured under four conditions, sitting or standing on unstable surface, with eyes open or closed. The TDL parameters were compared between the two groups to explore their discriminative ability. The CLBP group had more body sway than the control group, characterized by several TDL parameters in sitting with eyes closed and standing with eyes open. The TDL parameters with the highest area under the curve according to the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis were the root mean square distance and mean frequency in the medial-lateral direction obtained in the sitting with eyes closed. In conclusion, we confirmed the advantage of using sitting posturographic parameters as a sensitive measure to detect impaired trunk control in patients with CLBP. The results would help choose sensitive outcome measures to reflect the postural control of patients with LBP.
