Introduction: Social isolation and loneliness have been rising social determinants of cardiometabolic health. Objectives: To investigate the associations of social isolation and loneliness with diabetic microvascular complications (DMC) among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and assess the extent to which intermediate risk factors explained the associations. Methods: Data for individuals with T2DM (n=24,297, 62.2% male; mean age=60.0 years) were taken from the UK Biobank. Social isolation and loneliness were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. DMC, mainly including diabetic kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic neuropathy, were identified by linking hospital records and death registries. Results: In the multivariate-adjusted model, social isolation was associated with an increased risk for incidence of any DMC (most vs. least: HR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.05-1.22), especially diabetic kidney disease and neuropathy; loneliness was also associated with any DMC (yes vs. no: HR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.02-1.23) and diabetic kidney disease. Social isolation and loneliness ranked similarly in relative strength for predicting DMC as other conventional risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, and physical activity. The association between social isolation and DMC was mainly attributed to health behaviors, while the association between loneliness and DMC was primarily explained by health behaviors, psychological factors, and diabetes-related factors. Conclusions: Social isolation and loneliness were independently associated with a higher risk for incident DMC among individuals with T2DM, which were largely explained by subsequent unhealthy lifestyles, psychosocial stress, and diabetes-related factors. These findings underscore social isolation and loneliness as novel modifiable risk factors for predicting DMC. Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of excess mortality in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Physical activity (PA) is widely acknowledged with multiple health benefits, but associations of PA with incident CVD, all-cause and CVD mortality in people with SMI remain unclear. Objectives: To determine dose-response and intensity-specific associations of PA with incident CVD, all-cause and CVD mortality in people with SMI. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted on 6313 SMI participants with accelerometry data from UK Biobank (mean age 61.05 years) from February 2013 to November 2021 (median 7-year follow-up). Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was categorized by meeting the guideline level or not, while total PA and light-intensity PA (LPA) were grouped by tertiles. Incident CVD, all-cause and CVD mortality ascertained by hospital and death registries were main outcomes. Results: PA was inversely associated with the risk for incident CVD (Poverall < 0.05 for total PA and MVPA, Pnonlinearity > 0.05 for all PA), all-cause mortality (Poverall < 0.05 for all PA, Pnonlinearity < 0.05 for total PA and LPA), and CVD mortality (Poverall < 0.001 for total PA and LPA, Pnonlinearity < 0.05 for all PA). Performing guideline-recommended volume of MVPA was associated with a reduced risk of 19% for incident CVD (95% CI, 0.67-0.98), 42% for all-cause mortality (95% CI, 0.43-0.79), and 50% for CVD mortality (95% CI, 0.31-0.82). A combination of recommended MVPA and a moderate volume of LPA was associated with the lowest risk, mitigating 21% risk for incident CVD, 59% for all-cause mortality, and 78% for CVD mortality. Conclusions: Primary engagement of guideline-recommended MVPA, supplemented with moderate amount of LPA, was associated with lower risks for incident CVD, all-cause and CVD mortality among people with SMI. We discover a method of opening the conductive channels of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) by using hydrogenation chains to separate the nanoribbon into two strips with a ∼0.7 Å distance, although the overall hydrogenation on graphene transforms the highly conductive semimetal sheet into an insulator. Two edge-like states emerge around each hydrogenation chain. The conductance enhancement, made by the hydrogenation chain, is found in nanoribbons with 5 to 7 chains, e.g. 5ZGNRH, 6ZGNRH, 7ZGNRH, and 7ZGNR2H (7ZGNR with two hydrogenation chains). The ZGNRs with hydrogenation chains illustrate their potential in nanoelectronics and carbon electronics as electronic leads and nonlinear devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use density functional theory based nonequilibrium Green's function to self-consistently study the current through the 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT). The elastic and inelastic tunneling properties through this Au-BDT-Au molecular junction are simulated, respectively. For the elastic tunneling case, it is found that the current through the tilted molecule can be modulated effectively by the external gate field, which is perpendicular to the phenyl ring. The gate voltage amplification comes from the modulation of the interaction between the electrodes and the molecules in the junctions. For the inelastic case, the electron tunneling scattered by the molecular vibrational modes is considered within the self-consistent Born approximation scheme, and the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum is calculated. We use density functional theory based nonequilibrium Green’s function to calculate the current through the different rodlike molecules at the finite temperatures self-consistently, which was compared to the experimental measurements presented by Reichert et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 176804 (2002)] and by Mayor et al. [Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 42, 5834 (2003)], respectively. Our results agree with the measurements very well, especially for the bias around ±1.0 V. The investigation of the topological effect for the symmetrical molecule reveals the fact that the para position compound provides a considerably larger conductance than the meta one. The bistable molecular switches have been studied theoretically based on the first-principles calculation. The geometry structures of the switches studied in this paper can be triggered between two symmetrical structures by using an external applied electric field. I-V characteristic curves of the different molecule configurations have been calculated, and distinguishability of these characteristic curves indicates a switching behavior, the performance of which can be improved significantly by some suitable donors and acceptors. OBJECTIVE: Deregulated expression of miRNAs contributes to the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). miR-504-3p, one of these miRNAs, has been found have upregulated expression in various human malignancies. Our present study aimed to detect the expression of miR-504-3p and its biological effect in AML. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Real-time quantitative PCR was applied to evaluate the expression level of miR-504-3p in AML cell lines and the serum from AML cases. The correlations between miR-504-3p and AML patients' clinicopathological characteristics, as well as AML patients' overall survival, were statistically assessed. Moreover, we investigated the effect of miR-504-3p knockdown on AML cells by CCK-8, Transwell assays and flow cytometry, in vitro. The Western blot, RT-PCR and luciferase reporter assay were performed to evaluate the relationship between miR-504-3p and its downstream target genes. Finally, the biological function of MTHFD2 was also analyzed. RESULTS: The expression levels of miR-504-3p were significantly down-regulated in the serum of AML patients and cell lines, and its low expression was positively associated with advanced clinical stages and poor prognosis of AML patients. Functional assays indicated that overexpression of miR-504-3p leads to AML cell growth arrest, invasion and migration inhibition, and elevated rates of apoptosis. We also found that miR-504-3p regulated the expression of MTHFD2 by binding to its 3'-UTR, and knockdown of MTHFD2 significantly suppressed AML cells proliferation, migration and invasion, and promoted apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide important evidence that supports the role of miR-504- 3p as a tumor suppressor in AML via the inhibition of MTHFD2 expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bi2−xBaxFe4O9 material (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.125) has been synthesized by sol-gel method. Structural characterization shows the single phase of orthorhombic Bi2Fe4O9. Moreover, the structure of Bi2−xBaxFe4O9 gradually presents a regular variation with increasing Ba content. Surface morphology of the samples is examined showing homogeneous grain distribution accompanied by the decreasing grain size with increase of Ba. Due to doping Ba, magnetic properties are significantly enhanced shown as the increasing remnant magnetization and saturation magnetization. Dielectric constant shows the increasing tendency with colossal values especially at high temperature range. In addition, the real part of ac conductivity exhibits the increasing trend with increasing frequency and the content of Ba. The analysis of impedance spectrum also suggests the increasing conductivity. The improvement in magnetic and electrical properties of Bi2Fe4O9 by substitution of Ba can be attributed to the different ionic radius of Ba2+ from Bi3+ to Fe3+ which results in the change of magnetic structure and morphology. The prevalence of sexually transmitted infection (STI) pathogens in Beijing, China, is rarely reported. In this study, 34 911 symptomatic outpatients with suspected genital infections who attended outpatient clinics in a tertiary care hospital were included to investigate the updated prevalence of Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU), Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2016 in Beijing, China. Results indicated that a decrease trend (UU, CT, NG and HSV) in male and an increase trend (UU, CT and NG) in female were observed during the period. Patients aged 20-39 years old were mostly affected by these pathogens, while the prevalence in patients aged 20-29 years old was the highest, The prevalence of UU in male was significantly lower than in female (31.5% vs. 49.3%, P < 0.05), while the prevalence of NG in male was significantly higher than in female (2.5% vs. 0.8%, P < 0.05). In patients with co-infections, 60.6% of male and 71.4% of female were co-infected by UU + CT. In total, 11.9% and 88.1% of patients with HSV infections were confirmed to be infected by HSV-1 and HSV-2. This study could contribute to a better understanding of the current epidemiological features of UU, NG, CT and HSV among symptomatic patients attending an outpatient clinic in Beijing, China, and thus facilitate to develop more effective intervention, prevention and treatment of STI. The spatial variability of acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) and its influential factors were studied through regression analysis to explain the spatial distribution of AVS and to predict the variability of metal availability under changing conditions simply and effectively. The AVS equation is used to derive oxidation-reduction potential (Eh), sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), organic carbon (OC), and total sulfur (TS). The relationships of these variables with AVS were then analyzed. Moreover, their effect on AVS was quantified through linear regression (LR) and principal component regression (PCR). These two regression equations were analyzed using a histogram of residual values and by comparing mean relative error (MRE) and root-mean-square error (RMSE) values. LR (Model 1) and PCR (Model 2) models were established as well. The MRE and RMSE values in the PCR model were 21.9 and 25.9%, respectively. In terms of these values, the PCR model is more accurate than the LR model. Furthermore, its predictive results were more reasonable. In conclusion, the PCR model can be used to predict the AVS concentrations based on the OC, Eh, SRB, and TS values. This model simplifies and facilitates the evaluation of metal toxicity under field conditions and can thus be used to manage sediments contaminated with metals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
