We propose a multi-tier paradigm to preserve various components of Morse-Smale complexes in lossy compressed scalar fields, including extrema, saddles, separatrices, and persistence diagrams. Existing error-bounded lossy compressors rarely consider preserving topological structures such as discrete Morse-Smale complexes, leading to significant inaccuracies in data interpretation and potentially resulting in incorrect scientific conclusions. This paper mainly focuses on preserving the Morse-Smale complexes in 2D or 3D discrete scalar fields by precisely preserving critical simplices and the separatrices that connect them. Our approach generates a series of edits during compression time, which are applied to the decompressed data to accurately reconstruct the complexes while maintaining the error within prescribed bounds. We design a workflow that iteratively fixes critical simplices and separatrices in alternating steps until convergence within finite iterations. Our approach addresses diverse application needs by offering users flexible options to balance compression efficiency and feature preservation. To enable effective integration with lossy compressors, we use GPU parallelism to enhance the performance of each workflow component. Error-bounded lossy compression has been a critical technique to significantly reduce the sheer amounts of simulation datasets for high-performance computing (HPC) scientific applications while effectively controlling the data distortion based on user-specified error bound. In many real-world use cases, users must perform computational operations on the compressed data (a.k.a. homomorphic compression). However, none of the existing error-bounded lossy compressors support the homomorphism, inevitably resulting in undesired decompression costs. In this paper, we propose a novel homomorphic error-bounded lossy compressor (called HoSZp), which supports not only error-bounding features but efficient computations (including negation, addition, multiplication, mean, variance, etc.) on the compressed data without the complete decompression step, which is the first attempt to the best of our knowledge. We develop several optimization strategies to maximize the overall compression ratio and execution performance. Suppressing high-frequency laser phase noise, particularly at frequencies near and beyond typical feedback bandwidths of a few MHz, is a critical yet challenging task in many advanced applications. Feedforward-based methods generally outperform feedback in high-frequency range, but their performances are more susceptible to perturbations. In this work, we focus on the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH)-feedforward method we demonstrated recently [Yu-Xin Chao et al., Optica 11(7), 945-950 (2024)] and analyze the factors that affect its long-term stability. By constructing a simple circuit allowing for adaptive control of the feedforward gain in response to power fluctuations of cavity transmission, we demonstrate a robust $\geq 40$~dB suppression of laser phase noise around 2~MHz and a noise suppression bandwidth up to 50~MHz. In comparison, when using normal PDH feedback, robust noise suppression of over 40 dB can only occur for frequencies below tens of kHz in most setups. Our findings may pave the way for general usage of PDH feedforward and allow for simple construction of low-noise lasers for precise quantum controls and precision metrology.

As a special type of collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM), altermagnetism has garnered significant research interest recently. Altermagnets exhibit broken parity-time symmetry and zero net magnetization in real space, leading to substantial band splitting in momentum space even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Meanwhile, parity-time symmetry breaking always induce nontrivial band topology such as Weyl nodes. While Weyl semimetal states and nodal lines have been theoretically proposed in altermagnets, rare reports of experimental observation have been made up to this point. Using ARPES and first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the electronic structure of the room-temperature altermagnet candidate CrSb. At generic locations in momentum space, we clearly observed band spin splitting. Furthermore, we identified discrete surface Fermi arcs on the (100) cleaved side surface close to the Fermi level originating from bulk band topology. Our results imply that CrSb contains interesting nontrivial topological Weyl physics, in addition to being an excellent room temperature altermagnet., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Recent advancements in multimodal foundation models have showcased impressive capabilities in understanding and reasoning with visual and textual information. Adapting these foundation models trained for general usage to specialized domains like biomedicine requires large-scale domain-specific instruction datasets. While existing works have explored curating such datasets automatically, the resultant datasets are not explicitly aligned with domain expertise. In this work, we propose a data-centric framework, Biomedical Visual Instruction Tuning with Clinician Preference Alignment (BioMed-VITAL), that incorporates clinician preferences into both stages of generating and selecting instruction data for tuning biomedical multimodal foundation models. First, during the generation stage, we prompt the GPT-4V generator with a diverse set of clinician-selected demonstrations for preference-aligned data candidate generation. Then, during the selection phase, we train a separate selection model, which explicitly distills clinician and policy-guided model preferences into a rating function to select high-quality data for medical instruction tuning. Results show that the model tuned with the instruction-following data from our method demonstrates a significant improvement in open visual chat (18.5% relatively) and medical VQA (win rate up to 81.73%). It is imperative to ensure the stability of every prediction made by a language model; that is, a language's prediction should remain consistent despite minor input variations, like word substitutions. In this paper, we investigate the problem of certifying a language model's robustness against Universal Text Perturbations (UTPs), which have been widely used in universal adversarial attacks and backdoor attacks. Existing certified robustness based on random smoothing has shown considerable promise in certifying the input-specific text perturbations (ISTPs), operating under the assumption that any random alteration of a sample's clean or adversarial words would negate the impact of sample-wise perturbations. However, with UTPs, masking only the adversarial words can eliminate the attack. A naive method is to simply increase the masking ratio and the likelihood of masking attack tokens, but it leads to a significant reduction in both certified accuracy and the certified radius due to input corruption by extensive masking. To solve this challenge, we introduce a novel approach, the superior prompt search method, designed to identify a superior prompt that maintains higher certified accuracy under extensive masking. Additionally, we theoretically motivate why ensembles are a particularly suitable choice as base prompts for random smoothing. The method is denoted by superior prompt ensembling technique. We also empirically confirm this technique, obtaining state-of-the-art results in multiple settings. These methodologies, for the first time, enable high certified accuracy against both UTPs and ISTPs. This research explores a novel paradigm for preserving topological segmentations in existing error-bounded lossy compressors. Today's lossy compressors rarely consider preserving topologies such as Morse-Smale complexes, and the discrepancies in topology between original and decompressed datasets could potentially result in erroneous interpretations or even incorrect scientific conclusions. In this paper, we focus on preserving Morse-Smale segmentations in 2D/3D piecewise linear scalar fields, targeting the precise reconstruction of minimum/maximum labels induced by the integral line of each vertex. The key is to derive a series of edits during compression time; the edits are applied to the decompressed data, leading to an accurate reconstruction of segmentations while keeping the error within the prescribed error bound. To this end, we developed a workflow to fix extrema and integral lines alternatively until convergence within finite iterations; we accelerate each workflow component with shared-memory/GPU parallelism to make the performance practical for coupling with compressors. We demonstrate use cases with fluid dynamics, ocean, and cosmology application datasets with a significant acceleration with an NVIDIA A100 GPU.

Error-bounded lossy compression has been effective in significantly reducing the data storage/transfer burden while preserving the reconstructed data fidelity very well. Many error-bounded lossy compressors have been developed for a wide range of parallel and distributed use cases for years. These lossy compressors are designed with distinct compression models and design principles, such that each of them features particular pros and cons. In this paper we provide a comprehensive survey of emerging error-bounded lossy compression techniques for different use cases each involving big data to process. The key contribution is fourfold. (1) We summarize an insightful taxonomy of lossy compression into 6 classic compression models. (2) We provide a comprehensive survey of 10+ commonly used compression components/modules used in error-bounded lossy compressors. (3) We provide a comprehensive survey of 10+ state-of-the-art error-bounded lossy compressors as well as how they combine the various compression modules in their designs. (4) We provide a comprehensive survey of the lossy compression for 10+ modern scientific applications and use-cases. Preference-based learning aims to align robot task objectives with human values. One of the most common methods to infer human preferences is by pairwise comparisons of robot task trajectories. Traditional comparison-based preference labeling systems seldom support labelers to digest and identify critical differences between complex trajectories recorded in videos. Our formative study (N = 12) suggests that individuals may overlook non-salient task features and establish biased preference criteria during their preference elicitation process because of partial observations. In addition, they may experience mental fatigue when given many pairs to compare, causing their label quality to deteriorate. To mitigate these issues, we propose FARPLS, a Feature-Augmented Robot trajectory Preference Labeling System. FARPLS highlights potential outliers in a wide variety of task features that matter to humans and extracts the corresponding video keyframes for easy review and comparison. It also dynamically adjusts the labeling order according to users' familiarities, difficulties of the trajectory pair, and level of disagreements. At the same time, the system monitors labelers' consistency and provides feedback on labeling progress to keep labelers engaged. A between-subjects study (N = 42, 105 pairs of robot pick-and-place trajectories per person) shows that FARPLS can help users establish preference criteria more easily and notice more relevant details in the presented trajectories than the conventional interface. In the realm of automated robotic surgery and computer-assisted interventions, understanding robotic surgical activities stands paramount. Existing algorithms dedicated to surgical activity recognition predominantly cater to pre-defined closed-set paradigms, ignoring the challenges of real-world open-set scenarios. Such algorithms often falter in the presence of test samples originating from classes unseen during training phases. To tackle this problem, we introduce an innovative Open-Set Surgical Activity Recognition (OSSAR) framework. Our solution leverages the hyperspherical reciprocal point strategy to enhance the distinction between known and unknown classes in the feature space. Additionally, we address the issue of over-confidence in the closed set by refining model calibration, avoiding misclassification of unknown classes as known ones. To support our assertions, we establish an open-set surgical activity benchmark utilizing the public JIGSAWS dataset. Besides, we also collect a novel dataset on endoscopic submucosal dissection for surgical activity tasks. Extensive comparisons and ablation experiments on these datasets demonstrate the significant outperformance of our method over existing state-of-the-art approaches. Recently, a novel magnetic phase called altermagnetism has been proposed, ushering in a third distinct magnetic phase beyond ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. It is expected that this groundbreaking phase exhibits unique physical properties such as C-paired spin-valley locking, anomalous Hall effect, nontrivial Berry phase, and giant magnetoresistance, etc. Among all the predicted candidates, several room temperature altermagnets are suggested to host significant potential applications in the near future. Nevertheless, direct evidence about the spin pattern of the room temperature altermagnet is still unrevealed. Previous studies found that RuO2 is identified as the most promising candidate for room temperature d-wave altermagnetism, exhibiting a substantial spin splitting of up to 1.4 eV. In this study, utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we report experimental observation of the spin splitting in RuO2. Furthermore, employing spin-ARPES, we directly observed the d-wave spin pattern. Scientific discoveries are increasingly constrained by limited storage space and I/O capacities. For time-series simulations and experiments, their data often need to be decimated over timesteps to accommodate storage and I/O limitations. In this paper, we propose a technique that addresses storage costs while improving post-analysis accuracy through spatiotemporal adaptive, error-controlled lossy compression. We investigate the trade-off between data precision and temporal output rates, revealing that reducing data precision and increasing timestep frequency lead to more accurate analysis outcomes. Additionally, we integrate spatiotemporal feature detection with data compression and demonstrate that performing adaptive error-bounded compression in higher dimensional space enables greater compression ratios, leveraging the error propagation theory of a transformation-based compressor. To evaluate our approach, we conduct experiments using the well-known E3SM climate simulation code and apply our method to compress variables used for cyclone tracking. Our results show a significant reduction in storage size while enhancing the quality of cyclone tracking analysis, both quantitatively and qualitatively, in comparison to the prevalent timestep decimation approach. Compared to three state-of-the-art lossy compressors lacking feature preservation capabilities, our adaptive compression framework improves perfectly matched cases in TC tracking by 26.4-51.3% at medium compression ratios and by 77.3-571.1% at large compression ratios, with a merely 5-11% computational overhead., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, 2023 IEEE International Conference on e-Science and Grid Computing

We explore an error-bounded lossy compression approach for reducing scientific data associated with 2D/3D unstructured meshes. While existing lossy compressors offer a high compression ratio with bounded error for regular grid data, methodologies tailored for unstructured mesh data are lacking; for example, one can compress nodal data as 1D arrays, neglecting the spatial coherency of the mesh nodes. Inspired by the SZ compressor, which predicts and quantizes values in a multidimensional array, we dynamically reorganize nodal data into sequences. Each sequence starts with a seed cell; based on a predefined traversal order, the next cell is added to the sequence if the current cell can predict and quantize the nodal data in the next cell with the given error bound. As a result, one can efficiently compress the quantized nodal data in each sequence until all mesh nodes are traversed. This paper also introduces a suite of novel error metrics, namely continuous mean squared error (CMSE) and continuous peak signal-to-noise ratio (CPSNR), to assess compression results for unstructured mesh data. The continuous error metrics are defined by integrating the error function on all cells, providing objective statistics across nonuniformly distributed nodes/cells in the mesh. We evaluate our methods with several scientific simulations ranging from ocean-climate models and computational fluid dynamics simulations with both traditional and continuous error metrics. We demonstrated superior compression ratios and quality than existing lossy compressors.

Error-bounded lossy compression has been identified as a promising solution for significantly reducing scientific data volumes upon users' requirements on data distortion. For the existing scientific error-bounded lossy compressors, some of them (such as SPERR and FAZ) can reach fairly high compression ratios and some others (such as SZx, SZ, and ZFP) feature high compression speeds, but they rarely exhibit both high ratio and high speed meanwhile. In this paper, we propose HPEZ with newly-designed interpolations and quality-metric-driven auto-tuning, which features significantly improved compression quality upon the existing high-performance compressors, meanwhile being exceedingly faster than high-ratio compressors. The key contributions lie in the following points: (1) We develop a series of advanced techniques such as interpolation re-ordering, multi-dimensional interpolation, and natural cubic splines to significantly improve compression qualities with interpolation-based data prediction. (2) The auto-tuning module in HPEZ has been carefully designed with novel strategies, including but not limited to block-wise interpolation tuning, dynamic dimension freezing, and Lorenzo tuning. (3) We thoroughly evaluate HPEZ compared with many other compressors on six real-world scientific datasets. Experiments show that HPEZ outperforms other high-performance error-bounded lossy compressors in compression ratio by up to 140% under the same error bound, and by up to 360% under the same PSNR. In parallel data transfer experiments on the distributed database, HPEZ achieves a significant performance gain with up to 40% time cost reduction over the second-best compressor.

In urban planning, land use readjustment plays a pivotal role in aligning land use configurations with the current demands for sustainable urban development. However, present-day urban planning practices face two main issues. Firstly, land use decisions are predominantly dependent on human experts. Besides, while resident engagement in urban planning can promote urban sustainability and livability, it is challenging to reconcile the diverse interests of stakeholders. To address these challenges, we introduce a Consensus-based Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning framework for real-world land use readjustment. This framework serves participatory urban planning, allowing diverse intelligent agents as stakeholder representatives to vote for preferred land use types. Within this framework, we propose a novel consensus mechanism in reward design to optimize land utilization through collective decision making. To abstract the structure of the complex urban system, the geographic information of cities is transformed into a spatial graph structure and then processed by graph neural networks. Comprehensive experiments on both traditional top-down planning and participatory planning methods from real-world communities indicate that our computational framework enhances global benefits and accommodates diverse interests, leading to improved satisfaction across different demographic groups. By integrating Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning, our framework ensures that participatory urban planning decisions are more dynamic and adaptive to evolving community needs and provides a robust platform for automating complex real-world urban planning processes.

With the ever-increasing execution scale of high performance computing (HPC) applications, vast amounts of data are being produced by scientific research every day. Error-bounded lossy compression has been considered a very promising solution to address the big-data issue for scientific applications because it can significantly reduce the data volume with low time cost meanwhile allowing users to control the compression errors with a specified error bound. The existing error-bounded lossy compressors, however, are all developed based on inflexible designs or compression pipelines, which cannot adapt to diverse compression quality requirements/metrics favored by different application users. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic quality metric oriented error-bounded lossy compression framework, namely QoZ. The detailed contribution is three-fold. (1) We design a novel highly-parameterized multi-level interpolation-based data predictor, which can significantly improve the overall compression quality with the same compressed size. (2) We design the error-bounded lossy compression framework QoZ based on the adaptive predictor, which can auto-tune the critical parameters and optimize the compression result according to user-specified quality metrics during online compression. (3) We evaluate QoZ carefully by comparing its compression quality with multiple state-of-the-arts on various real-world scientific application datasets. Experiments show that, compared with the second-best lossy compressor, QoZ can achieve up to 70% compression ratio improvement under the same error bound, up to 150% compression ratio improvement under the same PSNR, or up to 270% compression ratio improvement under the same SSIM.

Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) laser frequency stabilization is a powerful technique widely used for building narrow-linewidth lasers. This technique is however ineffective in suppressing high-frequency (>100~kHz) laser phase noise detrimental for many applications. Here, we introduce an effective method which can greatly enhance its high-frequency performance. The idea is to recycle the residual PDH signal of a laser locked to a cavity, by feedforwarding it directly to the laser output field after a delay fiber. Using this straightforward method, we demonstrate a phase noise suppression capability about 4 orders of magnitude better than just using usual PDH feedback for phase noise around a few MHz. We further find that this method exhibits noise suppression performance equivalent to cavity filtering. The new method holds great promise for applications demanding highly stable lasers with diminished phase noise up to tens of MHz, e.g. precise and high-speed control of atomic and molecular quantum states.

The fast growth of computational power and scales of modern super-computing systems have raised great challenges for the management of exascale scientific data. To maintain the usability of scientific data, error-bound lossy compression is proposed and developed as an essential technique for the size reduction of scientific data with constrained data distortion. Among the diverse datasets generated by various scientific simulations, certain datasets cannot be effectively compressed by existing error-bounded lossy compressors with traditional techniques. The recent success of Artificial Intelligence has inspired several researchers to integrate neural networks into error-bounded lossy compressors. However, those works still suffer from limited compression ratios and/or extremely low efficiencies. To address those issues and improve the compression on the hard-to-compress datasets, in this paper, we propose SRN-SZ, which is a deep learning-based scientific error-bounded lossy compressor leveraging the hierarchical data grid expansion paradigm implemented by super-resolution neural networks. SRN-SZ applies the most advanced super-resolution network HAT for its compression, which is free of time-costing per-data training. In experiments compared with various state-of-the-art compressors, SRN-SZ achieves up to 75% compression ratio improvements under the same error bound and up to 80% compression ratio improvements under the same PSNR than the second-best compressor.

Hydrogen-rich materials offer a compelling avenue towards room temperature superconductivity, albeit under ultra-high pressure. However, the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure remains elusive, due to the inherent instability of most of the hydrogen-rich materials upon pressure release. Very recently, nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride was claimed to host room temperature superconductivity under near ambient pressure but was disproven by following works. Upon decompression, nitrogen doped lutetium hydride manifests a stable metallic phase with dark blue color. Moreover, high temperature superconductivity has been reported in lutetium hydrides Lu4H23 (~71 K) under around 200 GPa. These properties engender an unprecedented opportunity, allowing for the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure intrinsic to hydrogen-rich material. In this work, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the non-superconducting nitrogen doped lutetium hydride, we observed significant flat band and Van Hove singularity marginally below the Fermi level. These salient features, identified as critical elements, proffer potential amplifiers for the realization of heightened superconductivity, as evidenced by prior research. Our results not only unveil a confluence of potent strong correlation effects and anisotropy within the Lu-H-N compound, but also provide a prospect for engineering high temperature superconductivity through the strategic manipulation of flat band and the VHS, effectively tailoring their alignment with the Fermi energy., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures
