This study examines a child's personal experiences with peer relationship building in the classroom and is guided by Vygotsky's cultural historical concepts of the social situation of development and cultural tools and Hedegaard's (2012) model for learning and development. Hedegaard's (2012) dialectical-interactive approach was adopted to analyse the data for this study which was gathered using digital video observations of a grade one classroom within the western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia over a five week period. This paper explores the strategies used by children that enables them to balance their desire for peer relationships while remaining within what is considered acceptable behaviours by their teachers within the classroom. It is argued that it is important for schools to continue to strive to find the balance between institutional demands while creating social situations that foster peer relationships.

Continuum of care is a concept that has been widely applied in HIV prevention and treatment studies. However, measuring care continuum can be challenging because it involves multiple stages and multiple components or domains at each stage of care. In this study, we introduced an analytical framework to (1) estimate intervention effects overall and by domain using a multi-level modeling approach, and (2) learn possible patterns of domains over time utilizing a multi-layer heatmap visualization. Longitudinal data from an intervention study conducted among people who use drugs in Vietnam were used to construct Seek, Test, Treat, and Retain (STTR) domain and overall scores. Findings from the adjusted analysis showed that people who use drugs in the intervention exhibited a significantly greater improvement in the overall STTR score than those in the control (p-values < .0001). The multi-layer heatmap revealed different patterns of the individual domains over time and the inter-relationships among the individual domains. This study demonstrates the feasibility of constructing a general fulfillment score and domain specific scores to measure care continuum among people who use drugs. The analytical framework can be readily extended to evaluate service fulfillment outcomes in health services and treatment studies for other key populations.

In this paper we study the finiteness of global Gorenstein AC-homological dimensions for rings, and answer the questions posed by Becerril, Mendoza, Pérez and Santiago. As an application, we show that any left (or right) coherent and left Gorenstein ring has a projective and injective stable homotopy category, which improves the known result by Beligiannis.

Loss of lean muscle mass and accumulation of adipose tissue are changes associated with aging. Previous studies have documented various components of body composition as predictors for insulin resistance. The objective of this study was to investigate whether components of body composition-appendicular lean mass (ALM) and/or abdominal fat mass (AFM)-correlate with insulin resistance in older men and women. This was a cross-sectional study of 92 older men and women. Weight was classified according to body mass index (BMI)-normal (BMI 30). All body composition data was determined by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and insulin resistance was assessed by the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Multivariable regression models with two-way interaction terms were employed to assess whether the associations between components of body composition and log HOMA varied by BMI categories. Although Chinese early childhood education policies have high expectations for kindergarten teachers' play pedagogy, teaching and play are still discussed as a bifurcation in Chinese kindergartens' daily practice. To support Chinese kindergarten teachers' development of play pedagogy, this study conducted an educational experiment (EE) framed by cultural-historical theory. The study was conducted in a public kindergarten located in the northeast of China. Two teachers and 34 children (4-5 years) were involved in the study. The data were collected using the methods of digital video observation, interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings indicate that EE creates a new social situation that can motivate teachers' development in ways of collaborative teaching. Moreover, the collective reflection and Conceptual PlayWorld (CPW) implementation within the EE amplified teachers' play pedagogy development. We argue that the EE works as a source of teachers' professional development (PD) and builds their identity as experts in creating playful learning environments in a Chinese cultural context.

Following the increasing impacts on the value of Western play-based pedagogy, early childhood (EC) teachers in China face developmental challenges related to understanding and implementing play-based mathematical education. The purpose of this paper is to explore Chinese EC teachers' perspectives on play-based mathematics teaching. In this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews and lesson plans are collected from six EC teachers in a Chinese kindergarten. Hedegaard's model is applied to frame analysis for capturing EC teachers' views and practices from a holistic perspective. The findings show that all six EC teachers valued play as a pedagogical tool for teaching mathematics, while their pedagogical decisions in applying play to children's mathematics are determined by the various demands from society, parents and children. The multiple demands from different perspectives result in challenges for teachers in designing collective play. This study revealed that only when play activity caters to the possibility of satisfying those demands can teachers pedagogically implement play for children's mathematical learning. The insights emerging from this study might address the pragmatic challenges that teachers face by enhancing teachers' professional development to support the advance of culturally sensitive play-based mathematics teaching in China.

In recent times, engineering education has increasingly emerged as a valued kindergarten practice. Engineering teaching in play brings challenges for Chinese kindergarten teachers. An educational experiment (EE) was conducted to help Chinese kindergarten teachers face this challenge. Qualitative data including video data and interview transcripts were collected in a public kindergarten located in a Chinese provincial capital city. Participants included one focused teacher and 28 children aged four to five years. In the context of early childhood education, drawing upon a cultural-historical perspective, we study how engineering pedagogical practices changed under the conditions of an intervention, called an engineering Conceptual PlayWorld (CPW). The findings show a shift in the focused teacher's subject positioning, and new practice contexts in which an engineering pedagogy emerged. We argue that a CPW created motivating conditions for Chinese kindergarten teachers to explore new engineering pedagogical practices, wherein they realised a new form of collective imaginary play and designed new engineering pedagogies for teaching young children.

There has been a major international focus on the education and care of toddlers. To date, empirical studies on adults' interactions in play with toddlers have focussed on the proximity of teachers, teachers' affective responses, and joint attention between adults and children in play. However, less attention has been given to the role of two teachers working together in supporting children's exploration of concepts in joint play. This paper takes a cultural-historical perspective and draws upon the concepts of play and subjective positioning to investigate how co-teaching promotes toddlers' joint play and exploration of mathematical concepts. Visual data of a group of toddlers playing with two teachers is analysed to explore how the teachers applied co-teaching pedagogy to support children's exploration of mathematical concept. The study argues that co-teaching provides potential to support collective play as two teachers can work collaboratively to address the toddlers' challenges and needs and support their exploration of the rules and mathematical concepts in play. Co-teaching by paired teachers enables toddlers' joint play to become more complex, helping the children to explore mathematical concepts and, in turn, further enhancing their play.

Lexical bundles are recurrent multiword combinations and often function as discourse building blocks. Lexical bundles have been analysed in university students' writing to detect linguistic errors, measure writing competence, and investigate the divergence between L1 and L2 writing. Few studies, however, have focused on the high-stakes genre of PhD thesis and investigated the bundle productions of the same genre within the same level and discipline. This paper compares sentence initial lexical bundles in the corpora of English theses written by Chinese and New Zealand PhD students in the discipline of General and Applied Linguistics. Forty-six bundles from a Chinese corpus and forty-two bundles from a New Zealand corpus were generated. Among them, 94% of sentence initial bundles were identified as metadiscursive bundles. Chinese and New Zealand doctoral students showed considerably different preferences in their bundle selection. The paper examines the possible impact of these preferences and suggests there is a need to extend the metadiscourse knowledge of doctoral students in terms of lexical bundles.

Cognition and behavior could reciprocally impact each other and together determine mental health amid large-scale disasters such as COVID-19. This study reports a six-month cohort study of a population-representative sample of Hong Kong residents (N = 906) from March-August 2021 (T1) to September 2021-February 2022 (T2). Cross-lagged panel analyses reveal that T1 poor behavioral functioning as indicated by high daily routine disruptions is inversely associated with T2 cognitive adaptation as indicated by self-efficacy and meaning-making but not vice versa. T1 routine disruptions but not cognitive adaptation are positively associated with T2 probable depression/anxiety. The positive link between T1 routine disruptions and T2 probable disorders is mediated by poor cognitive adaptation at T2. The present findings suggest that upholding daily behavioral functioning relative to positive states of mind could have a more pivotal role in mental health amid large-scale disasters. Future studies can test interventions that enhance the sustainment of regular daily routines.

BACKGROUND: Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) document instructions for intensity of care based upon patient care preferences. POLST forms generally reflect patients wishes and dictate subsequent medical care, but it is not known how POLST use and content among nursing home residents is associated with inpatient utilization across a large population. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the relationship between POLST use and content with hospital utilization among nursing home residents in California. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study using the Minimum Data Set linked to California Section S (POLST documentation), the Medicare Beneficiary Summary File, and Medicare line item claims. PATIENTS: California nursing home residents with Medicare fee-for-service insurance, 2011-2016. MAIN MEASURES: Hospitalization, days in the hospital, and days in the intensive care unit (ICU) after adjustment for resident and nursing home characteristics. KEY RESULTS: The 1,112,834 residents had a completed and signed (valid) POLST containing orders for CPR with Full treatment 29.6% of resident-time (in person-years) and a DNR order with Selective treatment or Comfort care 27.1% of resident-time. Unsigned POLSTs accounted for 11.3% of resident-time. Residents experienced 14 hospitalizations and a mean of 120 hospital days and 37 ICU days per 100 person-years. Residents with a POLST indicating CPR Full treatment had utilization nearly identical to residents without a POLST. A gradient of decreased utilization was related to lower intensity of care orders. Compared to residents without a POLST, residents with a POLST indicating DNR Comfort care spent 56 fewer days in the hospital and 22 fewer days in the ICU per 100 person-years. Unsigned POLST had a weaker and less consistent relationship with hospital utilization. CONCLUSIONS: Among California NH residents, there is a direct relationship between intensity of care preferences in POLST and hospital utilization. These findings emphasize the importance of a valid POLST capturing informed preferences for nursing home residents.

Abstract Silicate has been proven to be highly-effective at immobilizing soil heavy metals, but the effects of silicate stabilizers on rice grain cadmium (Cd) reduction and rice quality under field conditions are not clear. In this study, a field experiment was conducted over three consecutive years was conducted to examine the Cd reduction in rice grains and to reveal the potential effects of silicate stabilizers on rice grain nutrients, by setting different amounts of bentonite (B), silica‒calcium fertilizer (SC) and zeolite powder (ZP). The results revealed that the application of the B, SC and ZP significantly decreased the soil CaCl2‒Cd concentration (> 39%) and significantly reduced the grain Cd concentration in both early rice (> 70%) and late rice (> 18%) under field conditions; the silicate stabilizers reduced the soil available iron (Fe) but did not limit rice grain Fe nutrition. Additionally, the three silicates promoted rice yield and improved the rice grain Ca and Mg contents; and the application of B increased the amylose concentration of the late rice grains. In conclusion, high amounts of silicate stabilizers did not adversely influence the soil conventional nutrient indices, rice minerals or rice taste, but changes in rice selenium content need attention. Overall, in comparison with lime, silicate stabilizers can improve not only the safety of rice but also the nutritional and taste qualities of rice and are more eco-friendly for long-term use in soil.

Abstract Background Rifampicin resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) poses a growing threat to individuals and communities. This study utilized a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model to quantitatively predict the monthly incidence of RR-TB in Yunnan Province which could guide government health administration departments and the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) in preventing and controlling the RR-TB epidemic. Methods The study utilized routine surveillance reporting data from the infectious Disease Network Surveillance and Reporting System. Monthly incidence rates of RR-TB were collected from January 2019 to December 2022. A time series SARIMA model was used to predict the number of monthly RR-TB cases in Yunnan Province in 2023, and the model was validated using time series plots, seasonal and non-seasonal differencing, autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation analysis, and white noise tests. Results From 2019 to 2022, the incidence of RR-TB decreases as the incidence of all TB decreases (P 0.05). The time series decomposition shows that it presented obvious seasonality, periodicity and randomness after being decomposed. Abstract To achieve high power conversion efficiency in perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, it is necessary to develop a promising wide-bandgap perovskite absorber and processing techniques in relevance. To date, the performance of devices based on wide-bandgap perovskite is still limited mainly by carrier recombination at their electron extraction interface. Here, we demonstrate assembling a binary two-dimensional perovskite by both alternating-cation-interlayer phase and Ruddlesden−Popper phase to passivate perovskite/C60 interface. The binary two-dimensional strategy takes effects not only at the interface but also in the bulk, which enables efficient charge transport in a wide-bandgap perovskite solar cell with a stabilized efficiency of 20.79% (1 cm2). Based on this absorber, a monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cell is fabricated with a steady-state efficiency of 30.65% assessed by a third party. Moreover, the tandem devices retain 96% of their initial efficiency after 527 h of operation under full spectral continuous illumination, and 98% after 1000 h of damp-heat testing (85 °C with 85% relative humidity).

Abstract Understanding the biological mechanisms underlying racial differences in diseases is crucial to developing targeted prevention and treatment. There is, however, limited knowledge of the impact of race on lipids. To address this, we performed comprehensive lipidomics analyses to evaluate racial differences in lipid species among 506 non-Hispanic White (NHW) and 163 non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women. Plasma lipidomic profiling quantified 982 lipid species. Abstract Background The Chiari network, a remnant of fetal anatomy, consists of a mesh-like structure within the right atrium. With advancements in cardiac interventions, complications associated with the Chiari network have increasingly been reported. However, there are few reports about guidewire or catheter entrapment in the Chiari network during the insertion of a dialysis catheter. Case presentation A 46-year-old male with end-stage renal disease was hospitalized and underwent a digital subtraction angiography-assisted catheterization of the right internal jugular vein tunnel-cuffed dialysis catheter. When the guide wire entered a depth of about 20 cm, it was difficult to advance, manifested as resistance when twisting the guide wire and inability to enter the inferior vena cava. After the peelable sheath was inserted, it was difficult to pull out the guide wire. After repeated attempts to rotate the guide wire, the guide wire was finally pulled out. A fibrous tissue was wrapped around the tip of the guide wire. Its length was 6 cm, with a smooth surface and tough texture. We considered that the tissue we pulled out was most likely a part of a Chiari network. Conclusions This case highlights the potential for the Chiari network to complicate surgical procedures, including difficulty with guidewire and catheter manipulation. Attention should be paid to Chiari networks. Echocardiography can be used to identify the Chiari network. During the surgery, forcefully pulling out a stuck guidewire is not suggested, to avoid the risk of tearing the atrial wall and causing pericardial tamponade. An urgent consultation with ultrasound doctors and cardiac surgeons might be helpful in such cases.

Abstract Dry–wet cycles can cause significant deterioration of compacted loess and thus affect the safety of fill slopes. The discrete element method (DEM) can take into account the non-homogeneous, discontinuous, and anisotropic nature of the geotechnical medium, which is more capable of reflecting the mechanism and process of instability in slope stability analysis. Therefore, this paper proposes to use the DEM to analyze the stability of compacted loess slopes under dry–wet cycles. Firstly, to solve the complex calibration problem between macro and mesoscopic parameters in DEM models, an efficient parameter optimization method was proposed by introducing the chaotic particle swarm optimization with sigmoid-based acceleration coefficients algorithm (CPSOS). Secondly, during the parameter calibration, a new indicator, the bonding ratio (BR), was proposed to characterize the development of pores and cracks in compacted loess during dry–wet cycles, to reflect the impact of dry–wet action on the degradation of bonding between loess aggregates. Finally, according to the results of parameter calibration, the stability analysis model of compacted loess slope under dry–wet cycling was established. The results show that the proposed optimization calibration method can accurately reflect the trend of the stress–strain curve and strength of the actual test results under dry–wet cycles, and the BR also reflects the degradation effect of dry–wet cycles on compacted loess. The slope stability analysis shows that the DEM reflects the negative effect of dry–wet cycles on the safety factor of compacted loess slopes, as well as the trend of gradual stabilization with dry–wet cycles. The comparison with the finite element analysis results verified the accuracy of the discrete element slope stability analysis.

Electromagnetic forming (EMF) is a high-speed forming process with significant potential for manufacturing bipolar plates. However, titanium's low conductivity requires the use of a driver sheet in traditional EMF, limiting its formability improvement. This study proposed a novel electromagnetic forming method with independent loading of the magnetic field and current (EMF-ILMFC), enabling separate application of electromagnetic force and Joule heating. The dynamic deformation behavior of ultra-thin titanium was investigated using three different loading methods: quasi-static (QS), electromagnetic bulging with driver sheets (EMB-DS), and electromagnetic bulging with the new method (EMB-ILMFC). The study revealed that the forming limit under EMB-ILMFC was significantly higher than under EMB-DS and QS, with a maximum improvement of 139.1%. Numerical simulations and experimental analyses were conducted to elucidate the thermal effects on formability during dynamic deformation. The results indicate that thermal effects reduce flow stress, extend the duration of inertia and high strain rates, and thereby improve the formability of titanium.
