We developed a new transition-metal-free intermolecular Claisen rearrangement process to introduce allyl and allenyl groups into the α position of tertiary amides. In this transformation, amides were activated by trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride to produce the keteniminium ion intermediates that exhibit strong electrophilic activity. This atom-economical process delivers α position-modified amides under mild conditions in moderate to good yields and showcases a broad substrate compatibility.

As one of the most widely investigated compound skeleton, quinolines possess important medicinal and biological activities. As such, a great number of literatures, including reviews, have reported various methodologies to construct quinolines. Recently, organocatalyzed reactions have attracted the attention of organic chemists due to its being "green" because the reactions avoid the use of toxic metals. In this review, various distinctive contributions are surveyed with specific emphasis on organocatalyzed reactions for quinoline core constructions.

To explore the effect of anterolateral spinal canal decompression combined with short segment screw fixation with posterior approach for severe thoracolumbar burst fractures with spinal cord injury.From January 2016 to June 2018, 16 patients with severe thoracolumbar burst fractures (more than 50% of ratio of spinal canal encroachment, reverse fragment at the posterior edge of the vertebral body) with spinal cord injury were retrospectively analyzed, including 10 males and 6 females, ranging in age from 19 to 57 years old. Causes of injury:8 cases of fall injury, 6 cases of traffic accident injury and 2 cases of other injuries. Fracture site:TAll 16 patients were followed up, and the average follow up time was (15.9±5.4) months. The average operation time was (234±41) minutes and the average amount of bleeding was (431±93) ml. The loss of anterior height of injured vertebrae was (52.25±10.10)% before operation, (8.93± 3.61)% at 3 days after operation, and (9.25±2.88)% at the latest follow up. The results of 3 days after operation and the latest follow up were better than that before operation, and there was no significant differencesbetween results at the latest follow up and 3 days after operation (For severe thoracolumbar burst fracture and spinal cord injury, with more than 50% of ratio of spinal canal encroachment and reverse fragment at the posterior edge of the vertebral body, the anterolateral spinal canal decompression combined with short segment screw fixation with posterior approach has the characteristics of accurate reduction, complete decompression and firm fixation, and the clinical effect is satisfactory.

A metal-free brand-new one-pot multinitrogenation of amides for the chemo- and regioselective synthesis of 1,5-disubstituted tetrazoles has been developed. By means of electrophilic amide activation, and further C-C bond cleavage and rearrangement, a diverse set of functionalized 1,5-DST derivatives were selectively constructed under mild conditions. As showcased in the mechanisms, the chemoselectivity is easily switched by the selection of the starting materials in the reaction.

A selective Friedel-Crafts acylation of indoles via an unusual cleavage of the amide C-N bond was achieved by triflic anhydride activation. This method offers rapid efficient access to high-biological-value 3-acylindoles, performs a series of scrupulous mechanistic studies and offers a strong courage that amide synthons can form new C-C bonds under transition-metal-free conditions.

Background Hip dislocation after treatment of a femoral neck fracture with a hemiarthroplasty remains an important problem in the treatment of hip fractures, but the associations between patient factors and surgical factors, and how these factors contribute to dislocation in patients who have undergone bipolar hemiarthroplasty through an anterolateral approach for femoral neck fracture currently are only poorly characterized.

Posterior pilon fractures involve the medial malleolus (MM). Our purpose was to define the characteristics of posterior pilon fractures, and propose a classification system based on fracture morphology and type of management. The records of patients with posterior pilon fractures treated from 2011 to 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The injury mechanism, fracture morphology, surgical approach, and follow-up results were reviewed and analyzed. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of PLA Army General Hospital. Thirty-six patients, 18 males and 18 females (mean age: 48.9 years) were included in the study. Four characteristics were used to define posterior pilon fractures. A simple posterolateral approach or a combined posterolateral and posteromedial approach was used for reduction and fixation in all patients. The mean follow-up time was 28.2 months, and at the end of follow-up, the mean American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS) was 82.5 points (range: 35–100 points). Based on injury mechanism and fracture morphology, we classified posterior pilon fractures into 3 types that suggest the optimal surgical approach: type I, a single complete fracture fragment; type II, a posterior malleolus fracture with 2 subtypes; type III, a posterior malleolus fracture associated with complete MM fracture with 2 subtypes. The proposed classification system based on injury mechanism and fracture morphology can guide the surgical approach to maximize outcomes.

Semi-continuous biogas production from fruit and vegetable waste by medium temperature anaerobic fermentation was conducted. Hydrogen production under different food-microorganism ratios (F/M 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5) and hydraulic retention times (HRT) (2, 3, 4 d) were investigated. The results show that in the case of a smaller F/M values (0.5 and 0.75), not all HRT stages were conducive to the continuous production of hydrogen, however, they were conducive to producing methane, especially when HRT was 3 or 4 d. Continuous hydrogen production was viable when the F/M ration was relatively higher (1.0 and 1.5), however, this was not conducive to the production of methane, with almost no methane production detected in this process. A F/M of 1.0 and a HRT of 3 d provided the best conditions for continuous hydrogen production from fruit and vegetable waste. Meanwhile, the highest and average daily volume of hydrogen production were 451.2 mL·(L·d)

A palladium-catalyzed aryldifluoroalkylation of alkynes with ethyl difluoroiodoacetate and arylboronic acids as reaction partners is described. The alkyne difunctionalization process provides various aryldifluoroalkylated products in one pot under mild reaction conditions. A wide range of alkynes and diverse arylboronic acids are compatible with these reaction conditions. High reaction efficiency and broad substrate scope are the notable features of this transformation. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicate that a difluoroalkyl radical addition pathway is involved in this transformation.

A concise, novel and flexible metal-free single step to synthesize functionalized quinolines is reported. Triflic anhydride-mediated (Tf2 O) activation of amides is discussed in the presence of pyridine to offer strong electrophiles, thereby showcasing excellent productivity, high regio- and chemoselectivity, and widely tolerable substrates. This approach provides a straightforward and efficient way to construct azaheterocycle structures.

A silver-promoted oxidative cyclization of 1,6-enynes with disubstituted phosphine oxides is developed for the synthesis of fluorene derivatives. The reaction proceeds with high regioselectivity by constructing one C-P bond and two C-C bonds in one step. Moreover, reduction of the pentavalent phosphine enlarges the application scope of the product.

We report mechanistic studies of C H activitation/amidation reactions using azides as the amino source catalyzed by [RuCl2(p-cymene)](2). We have achieved two intermediates in the catalytic cycle (C5H4NC6H4)Ru(p-cymene)Cl and (C5H4NC6H4)NArRu(p-cymene)Cl (Ar = NO2C6H4SO2). Furthermore, the process from (C5H4NC6H4)Ru(p-cymene)Cl to (C5H4NC6H4)NArRu(p-cymene)Cl was monitored by F-19 NMR and a ruthenium imido species was proposed to explain the formation of the azacyclopropane analogue.

Functionalized spiro-tetrahydro-β-carbolines were formed by an efficient gold(I)-catalyzed rearrangement reaction of alkynylaziridine indoles. The reaction involved a Friedel–Crafts type intramolecular reaction of alkynylaziridine indoles, following by hydroamination of aminoallene intermediate.

A highly regio- and stereoselective copper-mediated cyanodifluoroalkylation of alkynes with ethyl difluoroiodoacetate and trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) is described. The three-component coupling reaction provides straightforward access to a variety of useful difluoroalkyl-substituted acrylonitriles. The introduction of the nitrile unit is of great importance in drug discovery for the modification of this fragment. Preliminary mechanistic investigations indicate that a vinyl iodide intermediate and a difluoroalkyl radical might be involved in this transformation.

An unprecedented Lewis acid catalyzed [4 + 3] cycloaddition reaction is described that provides a straightforward route to polycyclic products containing an imine-based indole azepine scaffold, starting from readily available internal tertiary alkynols and azides. This cycloaddition protocol provides efficient and atom-economical access to a new class of fascinating imine-containing products in satisfactory yields, which has shown good application in the construction of seven-membered N-heterocycles.

To evaluate the curative effect and surigical skills of reconstruction intramedullary nailing in the treatment of ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures.From January 2007 to January 2013, 13 patients with ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures were treated by reconstruction intramedullary nailing including 11 males and 2 females with an average age of 38.9 yeas old ranging from 25 to 53 years old. For femoral neck fractures,10 cases were basilar neck fracture, 3 were transcervical fractures and according to Garden classification,10 were type II, 2 were type III and 1 was type IV. For feormal shaft fracture, 5 were type I, 4 were type II, 3 were type III and 1 was type IV according to Winquist classification. The location of all 13 feormal shaft fractures were all in the uper 3/4 of the feormal shaft. Complications and postoperative function were recorded and evaluated.Eleven patients were followed up for 23.45 months (12 to 36 months). Time from injury to operation was 5.9 days in average. Malunion of femoral neck fracture happened in 1 patient, nonunion of femoral shaft fracture happened in 2 patients. NO femoral head osteonecrosis, infection and malunion of femoral shaft fracture happened. According to Friedman-Wyman classification, 8 cases get good result, 2 get faii and 1 get poor.Reconstruction intramedullary nailing is a good choice for the ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures with the advantages of less soft-tissue trauma and complications.

An iodine-promoted one-pot radical cyclization reaction of 1,6-enynes with sulfonyl hydrazides to provide five-membered and hexatomic ring sulfonylated products under the same conditions is established. This reaction proceeded smoothly in water and gave the corresponding products by using I2/TBHP instead of expensive and toxic catalysts with C–S and C–I bond formed in one step. This method also allowed easy access to significant functional sulfones for potential applications in medicinal and organic chemistry.

The barium-excessive BaTiO3 ceramics with BN addition for laminated positive temperature coefficient (PTC)thermistors are fabricated. The tape casting technique and reduction/reoxidation process are employed into the fabricating procedure. The influences of BN additive on ceramic characteristics are discussed. The addition over 5% leads to rectangular and abnormal large grains. The 5% BN-doped ceramics shows a resistivity of 233 Ω•cm and PTC jump of 3.4 orders of magnitude. The charge carrier density in grain bulk and acceptor state density at grain boundaries are evaluated. The correlation of BN doping amount with room temperature resistivity, PTC jump, reoxidation effect as well as charge carrier and acceptor state density are investigated.

A direct nitration of aromatic sulfonamides using sodium nitrite as the nitrating agent has been developed. The reaction shows typically mono-substitution selectivity and can be enlarged to the gram scale with good yield.

Background In 2009 two RCTs were publicated to question the efficacy of vertebroplasty comparing with sham treatment (ST) in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), which provoked an academic debate on the efficacy of PVA. The purposes of our study were to compare clinical differences in pain relief, spinal functional outcomes, and overall quality of life between PVA and CT for painful osteoporotic VCFs. Methods We searched PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Knowledge from January 1980 to June 2013 with Medical Subject Headings terms and keywords. Risk of bias in the included studies was assessed in accordance with the Cochrane risk of bias tool. In this Meta-analysis dichotomous and continuous variables were calculated using the risk ratio (RR) and standardized mean difference (SMD), respectively. Results Eight studies involving 987 patients met the criteria for inclusion. The VAS SMD was favoring the experimental group significantly (p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis suggested that the patients performed PVA with mean fracture age less than 3 months would got pain relief earlier and more durable than the control group (P

This efficient, convenient, and direct nitration protocol tolerates a wide range of functional groups and shows typically mono-substitution selectivity.

The reaction of phenols or 1,2-diphenols with activated alkynes took place smoothly and rapidly in the presence of a catalytic amount of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2] octane (DABCO) at room temperature and resulted in the formation of various alkenoic acid esters or 1,3-dioxole derivatives in excellent yields. The scope and limitations, together with a plausible mechanism of the reaction are disclosed in this paper.

Objective To study the effect of Sorbaria Sorbifolia extract on anti-oxidative activities in rats with precancerosis induced by diethylnitrosamine. Methods Sorbaria sorbifolia was perfused into stomach of rats with DEN-induced precancerosis, then the biochemical indexes were investigated. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and the concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) were investigated by colorimetric method. Results Sorbaria sorbifolia extract increased SOD, GSH-PX and decreased MDA, GSH levels in serum and liver homogenate. Conclusion Sorbaria Sorbifolia extract significantly increased anti-oxidative activities in rats with precancerosis induced by diethylnitrosamine.

For the first time, a convenient zinc-promoted [4 + 3] cycloaddition of a carbonyl ene—ynes with simple dienes is achieved.

An efficient method to the preparation of spirocyclic tetrahydro-β-carbolines is presented using a Au/Ag-catalyzed tandem Friedel—Crafts type addition, followed by a cyclization process of the aminoallene intermediate.

A novel and highly practical reaction for the copper-catalyzed intermolecular cyanotrifluoromethylation of alkenes is presented here. This methodology provides a general and straightforward way to synthesize a variety of useful CF3-containing nitriles, which can be used for further preparation of pharmaceutically and agrochemically important compounds in synthetic organic chemistry.

To assess the early efficacy of metallic modular radial head prostheses in patients with Mason III and IV unreconstructable radial head fractures.The medical records of 16 patients (9 males, 7 females) with a mean age of 43 years old (31 to 57) with Mason III/IV unreconstructable radial head fractures requiring metallic modular radial head replacement between January 2009 and March 2012, were reviewed retrospectively. The functional results were assessed by range-of-movement, Mayo elbow performance score (MEPS). All patients underwent radiographic evaluation for radial head height and radiolucent lines.Fourteen patients were evaluated with follow-up for 12 to 33 months with an average of 23 months. Range of movement parameters was significantly lower in the affected elbow than in the unaffected side (P0.01). MEPS results were excellent in 9 cases, good in 2 cases, fair in 2 cases, and poor in 1 case. According to Grewal grading, there were 4 cases of periprosthetic lucencies of the radius and 1 case had significant clinical signs of loosening.Radial head replacement with the metallic modular prostheses yields satisfactory results regarding range of motion and function of the elbow joint in short term. The evolution of this prostheses needs to be evaluated with further studies to assess mid-term and long-term follow-up results.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PKP) has proved its effectiveness regarding minimal invasion, rapid pain reduction, safe cement augmentation, restoring vertebral height, and accelerating complete recovery of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs). Whether unipedicular or bipedicular PKP provides a better outcome is controversial.We searched PubMed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Knowledge, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Wanfang Data from January 1980 to March 2013 with "kyphoplasty", "unipedicular", "bipedicular", "compression fracture", and "randomized controlled trial". Risk of bias in the included studies was assessed according to a 12-item scale. Meta-analysis was performed. Dichotomous and continuous variables were calculated using the odds ratio (OR) and standardized mean difference (SMD), respectively.Seven studies involving 440 patients and 559 vertebral bodies met the criteria for inclusion. Among them, one randomized controlled trial had a high risk of bias and six a low risk. The pain visual analogue scale (VAS) SMDs were -0.02 (P = 0.88) for short-term follow-up (≤3 months) and 0.03 (P = 0.82) for long-term follow-up (≥ 1 year). Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) SMDs at short- and long-term follow-up were not statistically significant (-0.04, P = 0.77 and -0.07, P = 0.74, respectively). This meta-analysis showed greater polymethylmethacrylate volume (SMD -1.08, P = 0.00) and operation time (SMD -2.40, P = 0.00), favoring unipedicular PKP. Radiographic outcomes-preoperative kyphosis angle, restoration rate, reduction angle, loss of reduction angle-were not statistically different between the groups. Pooled analyses of cement leakage and subsequent adjacent OVCFs showed no significant differences between the groups, with OR = 0.82 (P = 0.79) and OR = 1.41 (P = 0.70), respectively.This meta-analysis comparing unipedicular and bipedicular PKP demonstrated no significant differences regarding VAS, ODI, radiographic outcomes, or complications. Considering the longer operation time and radiation exposure with bipedicular PKP, we recommend unipedicular PKP over bipedicular PKP for treating OVCFs.

A mild and efficient copper-catalyzed trifluoromethylation reaction which involves the cyclization of oximes has been developed. This method provides a convenient access to a variety of useful CF3-containing 4,5-dihydroisoxazoles by constructing a C–CF3 bond and a C–O bond in one step.

Background We conducted a prospective randomized clinical trial to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of the sinus tarsi and extended lateral approaches for the surgical treatment of displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures. Methods Between January 2009 and January 2014, patients with displaced intraarticular calcaneal fracture were randomly assigned to receive surgical treatment by the sinus tarsi approach or the extended lateral approach using block randomization. We recorded and analyzed data on demographics, time to surgery, wound complications, Bohler angles pre- and postoperatively, and American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society score. Results Sixty-four patients met the inclusion criteria and were randomly assigned to the 2 groups: 32 patients underwent sinus tarsi approach, and 32 patients the extended lateral approach. Baseline characteristics of both groups were similar. The time to surgery in the sinus tarsi approach group was significantly shorter than in the extended lateral approach group (P = 0.04). The wound complication rates were 6.3% and 31.2% in the sinus tarsi approach and extended lateral approach groups, respectively, which was significantly different (P = 0.01). Regarding the clinical outcomes, the groups did not differ significantly on walking visual analogue scale or American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society scores at 6 months and 1 year postoperatively. No significant differences existed between groups regarding the Bohler angle at different times and reduction quality of the articular surface and the medial wall. Conclusion Compared with the extended lateral approach, the sinus tarsi approach decreased wound complications and preoperative waiting time, and achieved similar functional and radiological outcomes for displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures.

To explore the feasibility and effect of percutanuous cannulated pedicle screw AF system fixation for the treatment of thoracolumbar flexion-distraction fracture without neurologic impairment.From June 2008 to June 2010,21 patients with thoracolumbar flexion-distraction fracture were treated with percutanuous cannulated pedicle screw fixation. There were 16 males and 5 females with the mean age of 32.7 years ranging from 23 to 55 years. Injured levels 5 cases was in T12, 13 was in L1, 3 was in L2. According to classification of AO, B1 was in 13 cases, B2 was in 8 cases. ASIA grade of all the patients were grade E. The mean operative time, bleeding volume, lengths of stay were evaluated. All the patients took the X-ray and three-dimensional CT reconstruction to observe the fracture healing and to measure the height of the anterior border of fracture vertebral body and the Cobb angle of kyphosis. The visual analogue scales (VAS) were compared preoperation and postoperation. The clinical effects were analyzed according to Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) from 10 aspects, including pain intensity, personal care, lifting, walking, sitting, standing, sleeping, sex life, social life, traveling.All the operations were successful and the mean time was (109.0+/-16.0) min, blood loss was (90.0+/-15.0) ml, lengths of stay was (7.7+/-2.3) d. No postoperative neurological deficits or wound infection occured. One case occurred subcutaneous fluid of incision and 1 case occurred delayed healing of incision. Fifteen patients were followed up with an average of 16.7 months (12-33 months). The VAS score improved from preoperative 8.3+/-1.7 to 1.8+/-1.2 at final follow up (P0.05). The ODI of last follow-up was (10.0+/-1.2)%. Three-dimensional CT reconstructions and X-rays showed the height of vertebral body increased from preoperative (54.0+/-17.1)% to (82.7 - 3.5)% at 12 months after operation (P0.05). Cobb angle of kyphosis changed from preoperative (23.0+/-13.1) to (6.9+/-5.1) degrees at 12 months after operation (P0.05). The healing time of fracture was (4.7+/-0.3) months. There were no significant loss of vertebral height or kyphosis correction between postoperative 1 months and last follow-up (P0.05). There were satisfactory fracture reduction and good position of internal fixation,and no loss of reduction within 12 months and no fixation failure in follow-up.The minimally invasive percutaneous cannulated pedicle screw fixation technique is feasible in treatment of thoracolumbar flexion-distraction fracture without neurologic impairment. This technique can avoid re -injury of posterior ligaments and bone structure, and may rebuild posterior tension band structure with the advantages of less trauma, less bleeding,shorter operative time, rapid postoperative recovery and so on.

To determine the therapeutic efficacy of augmentation plate fixation in nonunion of long-bone fracture after interlocking intramedullary nailing.From April 1998 to April 2009, 14 patients with long-bone hypertrophic nonunion after intramedullary nail internal fixation were treated with augmentative plate. There were nine patients with nonunion of femur, three of humerus and two of tibia. After implanting the intramedullary nail in situ, an augmentative plate fixation was applied to the fracture site to counter the rotational instability. A general plate with at least two screws reaching the opposite cortical bone above and below the fracture was fixated to the lateral side of bone shaft. In all patients, the rotational instability of fracture site was verified intra-operatively in all cases. However, motion disappeared after plate augmentation.All patients achieved radiological solid union at an average of 8 months (range: 6 - 11). Hardware was removed in six cases at 6-11 months post-operation. No infection, hardware loosening or rupture was found.The augmentative plate fixation can be applied at the fracture site to prevent the rotational instability. Augmentation plate fixation is indicated for femoral and tibial nonunion of proximal or distal metaphyseal-diaphyseal junctional areas, primary comminuted fracture and humeral nonunion after intramedullary nailing.

Aryl and arylvinyl nitriles have been prepared in good yields from the corresponding bromides with potassium hexacyanoferrate(II) using palladium-catalyzed reactions in ionic liquid under microwave irradiation.

To investigate the in vitro efficiency of recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV2) vector-mediated gene transfection into the rabbit articular chondrocytes.Articular chondrocytes were isolated from New Zealand rabbits, cultured, and transfected with rAAV2 containing enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) gene at different values multiplicity of infection (MOI). Successful transfection of chondrocytes was confirmed by detection of recombinant enhanced green fluorescent protein using inverted fluorescence microscopy. The transfection efficiency was determined using the fluorescence-activated cell sorter. A maximum level of 4.76% was set as the background autofluorescence in live, uninfected chondrocytes.The percentage of eGFP-positive chondrocytes increased in a vector dose-dependent manner. When the MOI value was1 x 10(5) v.g./cell the transfection rate was positively linearly correlated with the dose. However, the MOI10(5) v.g./cell did not markedly increase the transfection rate. The greatest population of eGFP-expressing cells was 97.7% and the highest mean fluorescence intensity was 17.4 7 days after transfection. EGFP gene expression remained high until 56 days after transfection.The in vitro efficiency of rAAV2 vector-mediated eGFP gene transfection into rabbit articular chondrocytes was high. The eGFP expression can be maintained for a rather long time. EGFP gene is an ideal tracer for chondrocytes transduction.

To analyze the clinical features, morphology and biologic behavior of primary malignant myoepithelioma (MME) of salivary glands.The HE sections of 16 MME cases were reviewed. Immunohistochemical study using EnVision method for cytokeratin (CK), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), vimentin, S-100 protein, desmin, muscle-specific actin (MSA), smooth muscle actin (SMA), Myo, proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), leukocyte common antigen (LCA) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was carried out.Of the 16 patients studied, 6 were males and 10 were females. Their ages ranged from 12 to 65 years (with an average age of 44 years). The tumor occurred predominantly in the parotid gland and minor salivary gland of the palate. Common clinical features included sudden and rapid tumor growth, superficial ulceration, bony destruction and nerve infiltration. Seven of the 16 patients developed local recurrences, while 2 patients had metastasis in the lymph nodes of submandibular or other cervical regions. Most tumors infiltrated adjacent normal salivary gland, adipose, muscular and bony tissues. The extent of local invasion however varied. Histologically, MME showed a wide range of morphologic appearance, with various combinations of clear, spindle, epithelioid or plasmacytoid cells. The tumor cells were atypical and demonstrated high mitotic activity. In this study, 9 cases were composed predominantly of clear tumor cells. Immunohistochemically the tumor cells were positive for CK, EMA, MSA, desmin and S-100 protein.In general, MME is a rare and low-grade malignant salivary gland tumor. It carries a low potential for lymph node or distant metastasis but relatively high tendency for local recurrences, resulting in destruction of adjacent soft and bony tissues. The biologic behavior also varies, depending on the site of involvement. Morphologic diagnosis of MME can be difficult in view of the wide spectrum of histologic changes. A definitive diagnosis however is possible with the application of immunohistochemistry.
