3. Health literacy in medical imaging: a scoping review of current evidence and future directions.

Abstract

The importance of health literacy in medical imaging is well recognized, yet the current landscape remains inadequately understood. This study aims to explore the extent of health literacy studies contextualized to medical imaging. Scoping review. A scoping review was conducted using three online bibliographic databases namely, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL. We have adopted the concept of health literacy, as a clinical risk and personal asset, to guide this review. Of 311 unique articles, 39 met our selection criteria. Five themes (categories) were identified by the authors: appropriate communication with patients who receive medical imaging test results, appropriate usage of medical imaging, classes and characteristics of eHealth literacy, disease/deterioration prevention, and patient education. Additionally, 17 health literacy assessment tools were identified, including 11 original creations. Finally, 11 recommendations have emerged from this scoping review, offering valuable insights into methods, considerations, and strategies for promoting health literacy. Health literacy studies in medical imaging cover both clinical and public health perspectives, benefiting diverse populations, regardless of underlying medical conditions. Notably, the majority of assessment tools used in these studies were author-generated, hindering cross-study comparisons. Given the innate capacity of medical images to convey intuitive information, those images do not solely benefit the patients who are given medical imaging examinations, but they also hold significant potential to enhance public health literacy. Abstract

Social media (SoMe) platforms have been widely explored as an educational tool, with early adopters reporting significant success1. An increasing number of healthcare institutions have been using SoMe for patient care and education, organizational promotion and public health programs. Indeed the pervasiveness of SoMe has increased accessibility to healthcare information and can potentially improve and/or complement clinical education. Usage of SoMe of enhances communication, promotes collaboration with peers and facilitates retrieval of relevant information for decision making. However, several gaps relating to SoMe and radiography education have been identified and need to be addressed such as the under-utilization of SoMe platforms in the formal radiography undergraduate curriculum and for Clinical Educators’ (CEs) professional development (PD). This may be due to the scarcity of engagement and interactive platforms with regards to Radiography education in Singapore. Abstract

The Exposure Index (EI) is an accepted metric in modern radiography practice that indicates digital detector response to incident radiation. The EI provides feedback to the radiographer on the exposure techniques applied. For example, an overexposed image will display an incorrect EI. In the spirit of ALARA dose management, it is of interest in our experimental study to determine the level of agreement between phantom doses acquired by applying both direct dose measurement methods and indirect dose measurement methods. Our direct dose measurement methods included the use of self-developing radiochromic film (RCF) XR-RV3 which was calibrated against a gold-standard reference dosimeter, the Unfors solid state detector. Indirect dose measurement involved recording the equipment dose-area-product (DAP) meter readout as well as using third party virtual radiography simulation software, TechnicVR v2.0 (Shaderware Ltd, UK).

7. Characterisation and application of the MOSkin radiation dosimeter at clinical kilovoltage x-ray energies

Abstract

X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is an invaluable diagnostic imaging tool in clinical practice. However in recent years due to the widespread availability and burgeoning use of Multi-Slice CT (MSCT) scanners, cumulative lifetime radiation dose has increasingly become an issue of public concern. Currently, no real-time radiation dosimeter exists in the diagnostic radiology clinic to directly verify patient skin doses. Moreover, existing CT dose measures such as the Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDI) and Dose Length Product (DLP) as displayed on the MSCT scanner console do not directly relate to patient dose. The objective of the following thesis is to investigate if the MOSkin dosimeter, based on real-time MOSFET technology, developed at the Centre for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) at the University of Wollongong, Australia, may be applied in clinical diagnostic x-ray CT photon beams as a CT radiation dosimeter. The main contributions of this thesis were firstly, the use of Monte Carlo simulations with the GEANT4 Toolkit to characterise the energy response of a prototype MOSkin dosimeter at clinical kilovoltage x-ray photon energies. Further simulation studies with the GEANT4 Toolkit found that the addition of a composite metallic foil or a change in the thickness of the overlying polyamide layer from the initial MOSkin design resulted in an energy independent radiation sensor. Secondly, a comprehensive experimental characterisation of the MOSkin dosimeter was performed in this work which led to the application of the MOSkin in three separate experimental studies in diagnostic CT radiology. The first experimental application was the acquisition of CT beam profiles through the combined use of the MOSkin dosimeter and the CMRP Dose Magnifying Glass (DMG). The second study applied the MOSkin dosimeter to radiation protection verification for the female breast.
