Abstract This study investigates the domain of IT outsourcing (ITO), focusing on its implications for organisational success or failure, and its impact on innovation. Through a comprehensive literature review, significant gaps were identified, including a lack of empirical studies assessing ITO outcomes for organisations, how ITO impacts innovation, and if an organisation’s industry impacts ITO success. In response, three research questions are formulated to address the identified gaps, leading to the creation of a novel conceptual model designed to evaluate the influence of ITO on organisations. Employing a deductive approach, the model informed a triangulation research approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data. A survey garnered responses from 112 senior IT professionals across three industries, complemented by eight interviews with senior and executive management. Findings indicate a concerning rate of perceived ITO failures and reveal that the specific industry of an organisation can affect ITO success. The study also concludes that ITO adversely impacts organisational innovation. Based on these insights, eight best practices are recommended to enhance ITO outcomes, including market research on vendor skillsets and experience, the establishment of well-structured contracts, adherence to SLAs without grace periods, shorter project durations, multi-sourcing strategies, bolstering internal IT capabilities, helping employees to understand ITO value, and rigorous governance. Acknowledging its limitations, this paper calls for future research involving broader industry representation and larger sample sizes to validate and expand upon these findings.

In an increasingly competitive world, master’s degrees are becoming the new common educational currency, leading to a markable increase in the number of students pursuing Professional Doctorates to stand out, boost their professional standing, and increase their income. The rise of Professional Doctorates is eclipsing the growth of traditional PhDs, and the academic intakes of the future look to be built of part-time professionals, who must also balance additional stressors such as family and personal life and their day-to-day careers. As such, this author recommends academic institutes promote the skills of resilience to help part-time students manage day-to-day stressors and embark on a more successful doctoral journey. This is an opinion-based paper that utilises lessons learned from the author’s own academic journey and the classic underpinning literature on resilience to recommend three sets of skills and mindsets that could help boost part-time doctoral students’ resilience.

The organisational focus on workplace automation is fuelling the evolution of the labour market towards task focused work systems, and an emerging gig economy. This evolution creates new demands on organisational leaders to introduce flexible and agile management techniques, whilst maintaining a strategic focus on upskilling and reskilling their employees for a digitalised world. We revisit our previous GJSD paper, “Mind the leadership gap”, to further emphasise these aspects of the changing work environment and introduce 1. Their potential influence on organisational belonging, and 2. The resultant impact on leadership styles and skills. This paper presents a short synthesis of the complex challenges faced by leaders within such an operating environment. This is followed by four further proposals for the future research agenda along with two suggested research methods which enhance our previous call to action on the leadership gap.

The coronavirus pandemic has acted as a catalyst for organisational change, disrupting historic ways of working, and spearheading organisations towards the next evolution of their working environments. In the aftermath of the largest concurrent work from home experiment in the world, organisations are coming to grips with the new policies and practices they need to implement to remain competitive. But there is one crucial stakeholder who continues to be left out in academic research, leaders. New questions now arise as to how we should remodel leadership in an increasingly remote world. What skills do leaders need to develop and how, in order to maintain employee wellbeing and manage the intergenerational divide? This paper presents a short synthesis of the challenges faced by leaders today specifically around remote team management but also in the context of a multigenerational workforce, alongside a summary of the research gaps we face in post-COVID literature. This paper concludes with the production of a future research agenda for scholars to close this gap, and to help organisations in building their leadership capability in the ‘new normal’.

Background: Physiological modelling often involves models described by large numbers of variables and significant volumes of clinical data. Mathematical interpretation of such models frequently necessitates analysing data points in high-dimensional spaces. Existing algorithms for analysing high-dimensional points either lose important dimensionality or do not describe the full position of points. Hence, there is a need for an algorithm which preserves this information. Methods: The most-distant uncovered point (MDUP) hypersphere method is a binary classification approach which defines a collection of equidistant N-dimensional points as the union of hyperspheres. The method iteratively generates hyperspheres at the most distant point in the interest region not yet contained within any hypersphere, until the entire region of interest is defined by the union of all generated hyperspheres. This method is tested on a 7-dimensional space with up to 35.8 million points representing feasible and infeasible spaces of model parameters for a clinically validated cardiovascular system model. Results: For different numbers of input points, the MDUP hypersphere method tends to generate large spheres away from the boundary of feasible and infeasible points, but generates the greatest number of relatively much smaller spheres around the boundary of the region of interest to fill this space. Runtime scales quadratically, in part because the current MDUP implementation is not parallelised. Conclusions: The MDUP hypersphere method can define points in a space of any dimension using only a collection of centre points and associated radii, making the results easily interpretable. It can identify large continuous regions, and in many cases capture the general structure of a region in only a relative few hyperspheres. The MDUP method also shows promise for initialising optimisation algorithm starting conditions within pre-defined feasible regions of model parameter spaces, which could improve model identifiability and the quality of optimisation results.

Positive end-expiratory pressure results in a sustained positive intrathoracic pressure, which exerts pressure on intrathoracic vessels, resulting in cardiopulmonary interactions. This sustained positive intrathoracic pressure is known to decrease cardiac preload, and thus, decrease venous return, ultimately reducing both the stroke volume and stressed blood volume of the cardiovascular system. Currently, cardiovascular and pulmonary care are provided independently of one another. That positive end-expiratory pressure alters both stroke volume and stressed blood volume suggests both the pulmonary and cardiovascular state should be conjointly optimised. Optimising these systems in isolation may benefit one system, but have highly detrimental effects on the other. A combined cardiopulmonary model has the potential to provide a better understanding of patient specific pulmonary and cardiovascular state, as well as resulting cardiopulmonary interactions. This would enable simultaneous optimisation of all cardiovascular and pulmonary parameters. Cardiopulmonary interactions are highly patient specific and unpredictable, making accurate modelling of these interactions challenging. A previously validated cardiopulmonary model was found to have increasing errors at high positive end-expiratory pressures. A new iteration, the alpha model, was introduced to resolve this issue. This paper aims to review the alpha model against its predecessors, the previous cardiopulmonary model, and the original three chamber cardiovascular system model. All models are used to identify cardiovascular system parameters from measurements of 4 pigs during a preload reduction manoeuvre. Outputs and parameter estimations from models are compared to assess the relative performance of the alpha model against its predecessors. The novel alpha model was able to reduce model errors under high positive end-expiratory pressure, resulting in more accurate model outputs. At high positive end-expiratory pressures (20cmH2O), the alpha model had an average error of 11.24%, while the original cardiopulmonary model had a much higher error of 52.21%. Furthermore, identified outputs of the alpha model more closely matched those of the 3 chamber model than the previous cardiopulmonary model. On average, at high positive end-expiratory levels, identified model parameters from the alpha model showed a 6.21% difference to those of the 3 chamber model, while the cardiopulmonary model displayed a 39.43% difference. The alpha model proved to be more stable than the original cardiopulmonary model, making it a good candidate for model based care. However, it produced similar parameter outputs to the simpler three chamber cardiovascular model, bringing into question whether the additional complexity is justified, especially considering the low availability of clinical data in the ICU. There is a critical need for model based care to guide important procedures in ICU, such as fluid therapy. Candidate models should be continuously reviewed in order to guarantee the best possible care.

Background: With the global disease burden of cancer increasing, and with at least 60% of cancer patients requiring surgery and, hence, anaesthesia over their disease course, the question of whether anaesthetic and analgesia techniques during primary cancer resection surgery might influence long term oncological outcomes assumes high priority. Methods: We searched the available literature linking anaesthetic-analgesic techniques and strategies during tumour resection surgery to oncological outcomes and synthesised this narrative review, predominantly using studies published since 2019. Current evidence is presented around opioids, regional anaesthesia, propofol total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) and volatile anaesthesia, dexamethasone, dexmedetomidine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and beta-blockers. Conclusions: The research base in onco-anaesthesia is expanding. There continue to be few sufficiently powered RCTs, which are necessary to confirm a causal link between any perioperative intervention and long-term oncologic outcome. In the absence of any convincing Level 1 recommending a change in practice, long-term oncologic benefit should not be part of the decision on choice of anaesthetic technique for tumour resection surgery.

Abstract Background Microbes play a role in their host's fundamental ecological, chemical, and physiological processes. Host life-history traits from defence to growth are therefore determined not only by the abiotic environment and genotype but also by microbiota composition. However, the relative importance and interactive effects of these factors may vary between organisms. Such connections remain particularly elusive in Lepidoptera, which have been argued to lack a permanent microbiome and have microbiota primarily determined by their diet and environment. We tested the microbiome specificity and its influence on life-history traits of two colour genotypes of the wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) that differ in several traits, including growth. All individuals were grown in the laboratory for several generations with standardized conditions. We analyzed the bacterial community of the genotypes before and after a reciprocal frass (i.e., larval faeces) transplantation and followed growth rate, pupal mass, and the production of defensive secretion. Results After transplantation, the fast-growing genotype grew significantly slower compared to the controls, but the slow-growing genotype did not change its growth rate. The frass transplant also increased the volume of defensive secretions in the fast-growing genotype but did not affect pupal mass. Overall, the fast-growing genotype appeared more susceptible to the transplantation than the slow-growing genotype. Microbiome differences between the genotypes strongly suggest genotype-based selective filtering of bacteria from the diet and environment. A novel cluster of insect-associated Erysipelotrichaceae was exclusive to the fast-growing genotype, and specific Enterococcaceae were characteristic to the slow-growing genotype. These Enterococcaceae became more prevalent in the fast-growing genotype after the transplant, which suggests that a slower growth rate is potentially related to their presence. Conclusions We show that reciprocal frass transplantation can reverse some genotype-specific life-history traits in a lepidopteran host. The results indicate that genotype-specific selective filtering can fine-tune the bacterial community at specific life stages and tissues like the larval frass, even against a background of a highly variable community with stochastic assembly. Altogether, our findings suggest that the host's genotype can influence its susceptibility to being colonized by microbiota, impacting key life-history traits.

Abstract Addressing threats to biodiversity from pest species is a global challenge. One such challenge is to mitigate the impact of an overabundant Australian songbird, the noisy miner Manorina melanocephala, on woodland birds. The overabundance of noisy miners is listed as a key threatening process under federal biodiversity legislation, but current understanding of where and how noisy miner populations can be managed to yield conservation benefits is unclear. We evaluated the effectiveness of noisy miner removal across 12 treatment areas totaling 3913 ha and nine control areas totaling 1487 ha important for the critically endangered regent honeyeater Anthochaera phrygia. Removal of noisy miners significantly reduced their densities in all but one of the treatment areas. In 10 of the 12 treatment areas, noisy miner densities remained below an impact threshold of 0.65–0.83 birds ha−1 for at least 3 to more than 12 months. The percentage of suitable noisy miner habitat in the surrounding landscape was not a strong predictor of noisy miner management success. Regent honeyeaters occupied six treatment areas, nesting successfully in four. The abundance of other songbirds increased post‐miner removal in seven areas, decreased in three, and was mixed in two. Data from the control areas showed some variation in songbird numbers was independent of noisy miner management. We conclude that noisy miners can be managed in areas of high conservation value for a minimum cost of AUD $10 ha−1. Larger treatment areas may be more important than the broader landscape context in maintaining long‐term noisy miner suppression. Standardized, long‐term monitoring is crucial to identify not only the drivers of pest species recolonization but also locations where threats from pests on endangered species can be addressed effectively while minimizing animal welfare and financial costs.

Background: Intracavernosal injection therapy (ICI) is an effective intervention used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It has been proposed that caution should be exercised when prescribing ICI to patients currently taking anticoagulants (AC) due to the theoretical increased risk of bleeding, however, there is limited literature describing complication rates of actively anticoagulated patients utilizing ICI. Aim: We sought to determine whether there was a difference in bleeding and other complications in a cohort of patients using ICI therapy with or without concurrent AC use. Methods: We reviewed our institutional electronic health record and identified 168 patients who were seen in our clinic from January to August 2020 who had either currently or previously utilized ICI therapy for ED treatment. These patients were surveyed regarding their ICI therapy as well as given the erectile dysfunction inventory for treatment satisfaction questionnaire. Data from 85 patients was obtained; 43 concurrently using AC during ICI therapy and 42 with no AC use. Fisher's exact test for categorical variables and a 2-tailed t-test were used with P < .05 considered to be significant. Outcome: Documented bleeding events (eg, bruising, hematoma), complications, and mean erectile dysfunction inventory for treatment satisfaction scores were compared between the 2 groups. Results: There were more absolute bleeding complications in the AC group vs the no AC group, with 3 of 43 AC patients (7%, 95% confidence interval: 2.4–18.6) and 0/42 no AC patients (0%, 95% confidence interval: 0–8.4) experiencing some type of bleeding complication on ICI. However, there was no statistically significant difference found in overall or stratified documented bleeding events and complications between the 2 groups. Clinical Implications: Patients with concurrent AC usage on ICI therapy reported a higher rate of absolute bleeding complications than our non-AC group. Strengths and Limitations: The strength of this study is addressing question of safety of ICI therapy in patients with concurrent AC usage. Limitations include single-center retrospective study design and underpowered sample size limiting confidence with which conclusions from data should guide future patient counseling regarding ICI risks. Conclusion: Findings from a single-center cohort of patients suggest that ICI therapy may be a safe and effective treatment modality for ED in patients with concurrent anticoagulant usage, however, given the higher rate of absolute bleeding events in our AC cohort, future assessment in a higher-powered study is warranted in determining a more accurate estimation of risk or propensity for bleeding complications in patients on AC using ICI therapy.Blum KA, Mehr JP, Green T, et al. Instant messaging (IM) applications, even with end-to-end encryption enabled, pose privacy issues due to metadata and pattern leakage. Our goal is to develop a model for a privacy preserving IM application, by designing an IM application that focuses on hiding metadata and discussion patterns. To solve the issue of privacy preservation through the obfuscation of metadata, cryptographic constructions like Oblivious Random Access Machines (ORAM) have been proposed in recent years. However, although they completely hide the user access patterns, they incur high computational costs, often resulting in excessively slow performance in practice. We propose a new federated model, FedORAM, which is the first ORAM scheme that uses a federation of servers to hide metadata for an IM use case. In order to investigate the trade-off between security and performance, we propose two versions of FedORAM: Weak FedORAM and Strong FedORAM. Strong FedORAM uses a tree-based federation architecture to ensure strong obliviousness, but with an increased overhead cost. Weak FedORAM has a more simple federated architecture that only uses Oblivious Transfer (OT) to increase communication speed, but with security consequences. Our results show that both constructions are faster than a similar client-server ORAM scheme. Furthermore, Weak FedORAM has a response time of less than 2 seconds per message for a middle-sized federation.

Near Field Communication (NFC) has become prevalent in access control and contactless payment systems, however, there is evidence in the literature to suggest that the technology possesses numerous vulnerabilities. Contactless bank cards are becoming commonplace in society; while there are many benefits from the use of contactless payments, there are also security issues present that could be exploited by a malicious third party. The inherently short operating distance of NFC (typically about 4 cm) is often relied upon as a means of ensuring intentional interaction on the user's part and limiting attack vectors. However, NFC is particularly sensitive to relay attacks, which entirely negate the security usefulness of the short-range aspect of technology. The aim of this article is to demonstrate how standard hardware can be used to exploit the technology to carry out a relay attack. Considering the risk that relay attacks pose, a countermeasure is proposed to mitigate this threat. Our countermeasure yields a 100% detection rate in experiments undertaken - in which over 10,000 contactless transactions were carried out on a range of different contactless cards and devices. In these experiments, there was a false positive rate of 0.38% - 0.86%. As little as 1 in every 250 transactions were falsely classified as being the subject of a relay attack and so the user experience was not significantly impacted. With our countermeasure implemented, transaction time was lengthened by only 0.22 seconds.

Multimedia delivery support has recently been added to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and has led to increased interest in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN). WMSNs are expected to be crucial to the success of applications related to the Internet of Things (IoT), such as smart health, smart surveillance, smart homes, etc. Alongside their improved multimedia capabilities, WMSNs inherit WSN limitations such as energy and processing constraints. Additionally, WMSNs have significant Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, since multimedia delivery requires increased network performance in terms of bandwidth, latency, etc. Balancing energy efficiency and QoS is a fundamental challenge for WMSN users and operators alike. This paper proposes Reinforcement Learning based Duty Cycle (rlDC), an innovative learning-based scheme to adjust the duty cycle and contention window of WMSN nodes in order to meet energy efficiency and QoS targets. By employing rlDC, WMSN sensor nodes intelligently adapt their operation according to network delivery performance and application requirements. The proposed rlDC scheme was evaluated under different use cases in a simulation environment, and testing results show it outperforms other state-of-the-art duty-cycle-based protocols for WMSNs.
