Abstract The study explore the influencing factors and healthy self-management of MS patients with bereaved relatives after Wenchuan and Yushu Earthquake of their real life; explore difficulties and challenges in the process of self-management; and supply information that could not be sought in quantitative studies. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 36 MS patients who are bereavement population in two earthquakes, and those patients met the inclusion criteria for semi-structured focus group interview. The Nvivo11 software was used to collate and analyze the transcribed data. The main influencing factors of health self-management behavior for MS patients are as follows: the degree of understanding of disease prevention knowledge, emotion management induced by earthquake trauma, the source of disease-related information, access and identification are very limited; ethnic traditional culture, religious beliefs, and production activities and routines before and after the earthquake is an important factor in their healthy self-management behavior. The lack of health beliefs and self-efficacy of MS patients among bereaved families after Wenchuan and Yushu earthquake are key obstacle in their self-management. The overall level of the knowledge of patients’ MS prevention, self-efficacy and self-management behaviors are still low. Some positive factors that can be changed including MS prevention knowledge, self-efficacy, social support, and family function. Some negative factors which can be improved afterwards, including negative coping style, traumatic life experiences from earthquake and smoking.

4. Clinical characteristic, management, and outcomes of cervical spinal brucellosis: a retrospective cohort study over 1-year postoperative follow-up

Abstract Background The incidence of cervical spinal brucellosis is low, only a few case reports have been published, and case series are not widely reported in the medical literature. Therefore, clinical features, management, and outcomes of cervical spinal brucellosis are relatively unknown. In this series, the authors report 15 cases of patients with cervical spinal brucellosis, including clinical characteristic, imaging findings, management plans, the institution’s experience, and outcomes at 1 year postoperatively. Methods The study reviewed the clinical and radiographic records of 15 patients who received antimicrobial pharmacotherapy, and anterior cervical debridement and fusion for cervical spinal brucellosis. The data collected included patient demographic characteristics, spinal level affected, abscess, neurology, pathological reports, duration and type of antimicrobial regimens, details of orthopedic management, and complications incurred during the procedure. Results Neck pain (100%) and limb paralysis (86.7%) were the most common clinical presentations, and the disease had a rapid progression. The C6-7 segment was the most commonly affected segment, followed by C4-5 and C5-6. Imaging commonly revealed epidural or paravertebral abscesses (80%). There was a significant improvement in the VAS, JOA, and NDI scores three months after surgery, and the scores continued to improve until the final follow-up. 5. Microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of a novel low-cost high-strength Pt-xAu-5Ni alloy

The present study designed and prepared a novel platinum alloy system Pt-xAu-5Ni (x = 0, 2, 5, wt.%) with high strength and good electrical resistivity. The mechanical, electrical properties and related microstructure during the cold deformation and subsequent aging process were investigated. The cold-deformed Pt–5Ni alloy obtained the yield strength of 581 MPa, the ultimate tensile strength of 828 MPa, the hardness of 283 HV, and the electrical resistivity of 23.9 μΩ⋅cm. The subsequent aging process and the Au addition into Pt–5Ni alloy were found to both enhance the mechanical properties. Therefore, with the dual strengthening effect of the subsequent aging and the Au addition, Pt–5Au–5Ni alloy achieved the high yield strength of 889 MPa, the high ultimate tensile strength of 1117 MPa, the high hardness of 361 HV with the electrical resistivity of 26.7 μΩ⋅cm. The precipitation of L12-type Pt3Ni nanoparticles and L11-type CSRO dominated the age-strengthening behavior of Pt–2Au–5Ni and Pt–5Au–5Ni alloys after cold deformation. The Au addition refined the grains via the experimental observations, and predictably favored the L12-type Pt3Ni nanoprecipitation based on the thermodynamical calculations, thus the Au addition effectively strengthened Pt–5Ni alloy. This study provides a novel platinum alloy system with excellent mechanical and electrical properties, which has potential application in the electrical contact field.

● Cash crops and livestock production in Yangtze River Basin has grown rapidly.● The agricultural inputs discharge multiple pollutants loads on water bodies in the YRB.● Multiple pollutants impact on efficient utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus in agriculture.● An explicitly multi-pollutant approach accounting for interactions is need.The rapid increase in the proportion of cash crops and livestock production in the Yangtze River Basin has led to commensurate increases in fertilizer and pesticide inputs. Excessive application of chemical fertilizer, organophosphorus pesticides and inappropriate disposal of agricultural waste induced water pollution and potentially threaten Agriculture Green Development (AGD). To ensure food security and the food supply capacity of the Yangtze River Basin, it is important to balance green and development, while ensuring the quality of water bodies. Multiple pollutants affect the transfer, adsorption, photolysis and degradation of each other throughout the soil-plant-water system. This paper considers the impact of multi-pollutants on the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles especially for crops, which are related to achieving food security and AGD. It presents prospective on theory, modeling and multi-pollutant control in the Yangtze River Basin for AGD that are of potential value for other developing regions.

Abstract Background Neuropsychiatric involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a common clinical manifestation. In SLE patients, cerebral function is a more sensitive predictor of central nervous system damage, and abnormalities in cerebral function may be apparent before substantial neuropsychiatric symptoms occur. The 5-hydroxynyptamine(5-HT) system has the ability to interact with the majority of the neurochemical systems in the central nervous system (CNS), influencing brain function. Serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) is an essential element of the 5-HT system gene polymorphism and is directly related to the control of 5-hydroxytryptamine transporter (5-HTT)gene expression. The relationship between 5-HTTLPR and functional brain measurements in SLE patients requires more investigation because it is one of the most attractive imaging genetics targets for shedding light on the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric lupus. Methods Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) images were collected from 51 SLE patients without obvious neuropsychiatric manifestations and 44 healthy volunteers. Regional homogeneity (ReHo), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) were selected as indicators for evaluating brain function. In accordance with the Anatomical Automatic Labeling template, the gray matter was divided into 116 regions. The mean ReHo value, mean ALFF value, and mean fALFF value of each brain region were extracted. 5-HTTLPR genotypes of all research objects were tested by polymerase chain reaction and agarose gel electrophoresis. Two-way analysis of covariance was used to investigate whether there is an interaction effect between SLE disease status and 5-HTTLPR genotype on resting-state brain function. Results In SLE patients with S/S homozygosity, there were notably lower mean ReHo, mean ALFF, and mean fALFF values observed in the right parietal, inferior angular gyrus, and the right paracentral lobule compared to healthy controls. However, this distinction was not evident among carriers of the L allele. Within the S/S genotype, SLE patients exhibited decreased mean ReHo in the left posterior cingulate gyrus, reduced mean fALFF in the left caudate nucleus, and diminished mean ALFF in the left temporal pole: superior temporal gyrus, in contrast to the HC group. Conversely, no such differences were discerned among carriers of the L allele. Notably, among L allele carriers, SLE patients displayed a higher mean ReHo value in the right hippocampus compared to the HC group, while demonstrating a lower mean ALFF value in the left medial and paracingulate gyrus in contrast to the HC group. Conversely, these differences were not apparent among S/S homozygotes. Conclusions Brain function in the right parietal and inferior angular gyrus and the right paracentral lobule is affected by the interaction effect of SLE disease status and 5-HTTLPR genotype.

Abstract Background Saussurea involucrata (Sik.) is alpine plant that have developed special adaptive mechanisms to resist adverse environmental conditions such as low temperature chilling during long-term adaptation and evolution. Exploring the changes of its metabolites under different temperature stresses is helpful to gain insight into its cold stress tolerance. Methods Ultra-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry were used to analyze the metabolites in the leaves of Sik. under low different temperature stress conditions. Results: A total of 753 metabolites were identified, and 360 different metabolites were identified according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and amino acids and sugars. Sucrose and trehalose synthesis, glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, glutamic acid-mediated proline biosynthesis, purine metabolism, amino acid metabolism, phenylpropane synthesis pathway metabolites all respond to low temperature stress. Under cold stress conditions, carbohydrates in Sik. leaves accumulate first than under freezing conditions, and the lower the temperature under freezing conditions, the less amino acids accumulate, while the phenolic substances increase. The expression of various substances in LPE and LPC increased more than 10-fold after low temperature stress compared with the control, but the content of LPE and LPC substances decreased after cold adaptation. In addition, purines and phenolics decreased and amino acids accumulated significantly under freezing conditions. Conclusion: The metabolic network of Sik. leaves under different low temperature stress conditions was proposed, which provided a reference for further exploration of the metabolic mechanism related to low temperature stress tolerance of Sik.

ESG has emerged as a prominent method for evaluating enterprises, gaining increasing importance in recent years. It assesses a company's ability to promote sustainable economic development and fulfill its social responsibilities, encompassing three non-financial dimensions: environmental, social, and corporate governance. Regulatory authorities, industry associations, and investment institutions worldwide have placed growing emphasis on a company's ESG performance. From the perspective of career concern, this study conducted a multiple regression analysis using data from Chinese A-share companies listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2011 to 2020. It used CEO shareholding and CEO political affiliation as moderating variables to examine the impact of CEO career concerns on the corporate environment, society, and corporate governance performance. Empirical testing of whether CEO career concerns promote or suppress the ESG performance in enterprises. The findings of this study reveal that CEOs with heightened career concerns tend to impede the ESG performance of their respective enterprises. Additionally, CEO shareholding and political affiliations exert a negative moderating influence on the relationship between CEO career concerns and ESG performance. This research significantly extends the investigation into factors influencing ESG performance, offering fresh perspectives that could inform improved CEO oversight, foster corporate transformation, and enhance ESG performance.

With the changes of social and economic development, more and more people pay attention to the development of non-profit organizations, and the performance research of non-profit organizations has become the focus of research. As the internal governance organization of non-profit organization, the board of directors and the management organization are related internal factors that will affect the organizational performance of non-profit organization. Based on the data of Form 990 of the US Internal Revenue Service, this paper conducted an empirical study on the relationship between internal governance and organizational performance of non-profit organizations, and studied the moderating effects of board size, average weekly working hours, number of managers, members' work involvement and compensation incentives on internal governance and organizational performance of non-profit organizations. The results show that the number of managers in non-profit organizations is negatively correlated with organizational performance, the average weekly working hours of managers are significantly correlated with organizational performance, and the compensation of managers is significantly correlated with organizational performance. Through the empirical demonstration, this study promotes the management and development practice of non-profit organizations, and lays a solid foundation for the construction of socialist harmonious society in China.

This article explores the impact mechanism of different types of environmental regulations on corporate green technology innovation (GTI). The research focuses on analyzing three types of environmental regulations: command based environmental regulation (ER1), market-oriented environmental regulation (ER2), and voluntary environmental regulation (ER3), and how they affect corporate GTI. This study selected enterprise GTI as the dependent variable and measured it by the number of applications for green invention patents and green utility model patents. The independent variables are the three types of environmental regulations mentioned above. According to data from Chinese A-share listed companies. Using benchmark regression models to analyze the impact of different environmental regulations on GTI, and constructing a moderating effect model to study the role of corporate R&D investment and government support in the process of environmental regulations affecting GTI. The results indicate that (1) ER1, ER2, and ER3 can all promote enterprise GTI, and the three environmental regulatory methods have a better synergistic effect. (2) R&D investment has a positive correlation with the relationship between ER2 and GTI, and a negative correlation with ER 3 and ER 1. (3) There are differences in the GTI performance of enterprises in different regions, ownership nature, factor density, and industry types under the influence of environmental regulations. (4) The impact of environmental regulatory policies on corporate GTI is mainly short-term. This study provides a new perspective on how environmental regulations affect corporate GTI, especially in the context of developing countries like China. The research findings emphasize the role of different types of environmental regulations in incentivizing corporate GTI, while also pointing out factors that governments need to consider when formulating environmental policies, such as regional differences and corporate characteristics, which are of great significance for promoting green development of enterprises and achieving broader sustainable development goals.

12. The effect of polystyrene nanoplastics on arsenic-induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells

Microplastics are detrimental to the environment. However, the combined effects of microplastics and arsenic (As) remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the combined effects of polystyrene (PS) microplastics and As on HepG2 cells. The results showed that PS microplastics 20, 50, 200, and 500 nm in size were taken up by HepG2 cells, causing a decrease in cellular mitochondrial membrane potential. The results of lactate dehydrogenase release and flow cytometry showed that PS microplastics, especially those of 50 nm, enhanced As-induced apoptosis. In addition, transcriptome analysis revealed that TP53, AKT1, CASP3, ACTB, BCL2L1, CASP8, XIAP, MCL1, NFKBIA, and CASP7 were the top 10 hub genes for PS that enhanced the role of As in HepG2 cell apoptosis. Our results suggest that nano-PS enhances As-induced apoptosis. Furthermore, this study is important for a better understanding of the role of microplastics in As-induced hepatotoxicity.

Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a common and burdensome symptom in cancer patients that is influenced by multiple factors. Identifying factors associated with CRF may help in developing tailored interventions for fatigue management. This study aimed to examine the correlates of CRF among colorectal cancer patients undergoing postoperative adjuvant therapy based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms. Methods: A cross-sectional study was implemented, and finally, a sample of 363 participants from one tertiary general hospital and one tertiary cancer hospital was purposively recruited. Data were collected using the general information questionnaire, cancer fatigue scale, the distress disclosure index, Herth hope index, and perceived social support scale. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were performed to determine the correlates of CRF. Results: The mean score of CRF among colorectal cancer patients was 21.61 (SD = 6.16, 95% CI 20.98–22.25), and the fatigue degree rating was “moderate”. The multiple linear regression model revealed that 49.1% of the variance in CRF was explained by hope, sleep disorder, internal family support, self-disclosure, pain, and time since operation. Conclusions: Our study identified several significant, modifiable factors (self-disclosure, hope, internal family support, pain, and sleep disorder) associated with CRF. Understanding these correlates and developing targeted psychosocial interventions may be associated with the improvement of CRF in patients with colorectal cancer.

In this study, the influence of different ionic composition in aqueous solution on the minerals surface wettability was studied. The differences effect of monovalent ion and divalent ions onto the wettability alteration were studied. The anions were Cl- and SO42-. The SO42- could make the minerals surface more hydrophilic. Besides, the influence of NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, Na2SO4, K2SO4 and MgSO4 on the mineral wettability alteration were studied. The results indicated that divalent ions showed significant impact on the minerals wettability alteration, compared with monovalent ion. The reasons were due to the fact that divalent ions showed higher ions adsorption than monovalent ion, and divalent ions have higher effect on compressing the electric double layer. The static contact angle and dynamic contact angle were measured. Different heavy oils were studied, including heavy oil with 100 ppm, heavy oil, heavy oil without resins, heavy oil without asphaltenes. The results showed that the asphaltenes would make it difficult for the heavy oils to liberate from minerals, thus decreasing the oil drops contact angle. Then the resins would decrease the heavy oil contact angles. CaCl2/MgCl2 and K2SO4 have synergistic effect on the change of the minerals surface wettability. Atomic force microscope (AFM) measurement indicated that the ions would effectively decrease the interaction force on the surface of heavy oil-minerals, which was beneficial to the heavy oil liberation. The roughness measurement indicated that the different ions would effectively increase the minerals surface wettability.

Microplastics (MPs) are widespread in the environment and can be ingested through food, water, and air, posing a threat to human health. In addition, MPs can have a potential combined effect with other toxic compounds. Polystyrene (PS) has been shown to enhance the cytotoxicity of okadaic acid (OA). However, it remains unclear whether this enhancement effect is related to the size of PS particles. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of the combined effect of PS microplastics (PS-MPs) or PS nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and OA on Caco-2 cells. The results indicated that PS-NPs enhanced the cytotoxicity of OA and induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis in Caco-2 cells, compared to PS-MPs. Specifically, PS-NPs and OA cause more severe oxidative stress, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, and mitochondrial membrane depolarization. Furthermore, it induced intracellular calcium overload through store-operated channels (SOCs) and activated the PERK/ATF-4/CHOP pathway to cause ER stress. ER stress promoted mitochondrial damage and finally activated the caspase family to induce apoptosis. This study provided an indirect basis for the assessment of the combined toxicity of MPs or NPs with OA.

Desulfurized manganese residue (DMR) is an industrial solid residue produced by high-temperature and high-pressure desulfurization calcination of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR). DMR not only occupies land resources but also easily causes heavy metal pollution in soil, surface water, and groundwater. Therefore, it is necessary to treat the DMR safely and effectively so that it can be used as a resource. In this paper, Ordinary Portland cement (P.O 42.5) was used as a curing agent to treat DMR harmlessly. The effects of cement content and DMR particle size on flexural strength, compressive strength, and leaching toxicity of a cement-DMR solidified body were studied. The phase composition and microscopic morphology of the solidified body were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS, and the mechanism of cement-DMR solidification was discussed. The results show that the flexural strength and compressive strength of a cement-DMR solidified body can be significantly improved by increasing the cement content to 80 mesh particle size. When the cement content is 30%, the DMR particle size has a great influence on the strength of the solidified body. When the DMR particle size is 4 mesh, the DMR particles will form stress concentration points in the solidified body and reduce its strength. In the DMR leaching solution, the leaching concentration of Mn is 2.8 mg/L, and the solidification rate of Mn in the cement-DMR solidified body with 10% cement content can reach 99.8%. The results of XRD, SEM, and EDS showed that quartz (SiO2) and gypsum dihydrate (CaSO4·2H2O) were the main phases in the raw slag. Quartz and gypsum dihydrate could form ettringite (AFt) in the alkaline environment provided by cement. Mn was finally solidified by MnO2, and Mn could be solidified in C-S-H gel by isomorphic replacement.

17. Determination of variation uncertainty in runoff time series at multi-temporal scales

In order to survey the possible periodic, uncertainty and common features in runoff with multi-temporal scales, the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method combined with the set pair analysis (SPA) method was applied, with data observed at Zhangjiashan hydrological station. The results showed that the flood season and annual runoff time series consisted of four intrinsic mode function (IMF) components, and the non-flood season time series exhibited three IMF components. Moreover, based on the different coupled set pairs from the time series, the identity, discrepancy, and contrary of different periods at multi-temporal scales were determined by the SPA method. The degree of connection μ between the flood season and annual runoff periods were the highest, with 0.94, 0.77, 0.7 and 0.73, respectively, and the μ between the flood periods and the non-flood periods were the lowest, with 0.66, 0.46, 0.24 and 0.24, respectively. Third, the maximum μ of each SPA appeared in the first mode function. In general, the different extractive periods decomposed by the EMD method reflected the average state of Jinghe River. Results also verified that runoff suffered from seasonal and periodic fluctuations, and fluctuations in the short-term corresponded to the most important variable. Therefore, the conclusions drawn in this study can improve water resources regulation and planning. The desulfurized electrolytic manganese residue (DMR) was prepared by calcination and desulfurization of industrial waste electrolytic manganese residue, and the original DMR was ground to prepare DMR fine powder (GDMR) with specific surface areas of 383 m2/kg, 428 m2/kg, and 629 m2/kg. The effects of particle fineness and content of GDMR (GDMR content=0%, 10%, 20%, 30%) on the physical properties of cement and the mechanical properties of mortar were studied. After that, the leachability of heavy metal ions was tested, and the hydration products of GDMR cement were analyzed using XRD and SEM. The results show that the addition of GDMR can regulate the fluidity and water requirement for the normal consistency of cement, delay the hydration process of cement, increase the initial setting and final setting time of cement, and reduce the strength of cement mortar, especially the strength of early age mortar. As the fineness of GDMR increases, the reduction of bending strength and compressive strength decreases, and the activity index increases. The content of GDMR has a significant effect on short-term strength. With the increase in GDMR content, the strength reduction degree becomes higher and the activity index decreases. When the content of GDMR was 30%, the 3D compressive strength and bending strength decreased by 33.1% and 29%. When the content of GDMR in cement is less than 20%, the maximum limit of leachable heavy metal content in cement clinker can be met.

ObjectiveTo study changes in blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, and explore the association between the alterations in BBB permeability and depression/anxiety in SLE.MethodsBrain dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) images were collected from 42 SLE patients and 23 healthy controls (HCs). Based on the Patlak pharmacokinetic model, the Ktrans value of each voxel in the whole brain of each subject was calculated. BBB permeability indicator (the Ktrans value) between SLE patients and healthy control group was compared. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) were used to assess the mental health of SLE patients. The difference in BBB permeability was compared on SLE patients with depression/anxiety, SLE patients without depression/anxiety and HCs by ANOVA analysis.ResultsThe Ktrans value of the right insular region of the SLE group was significantly higher than that of the healthy control group. And the Ktrans value of the right insular region in SLE patients with depression/anxiety was significantly increased compared with SLE patients without depression/anxiety and HCs.ConclusionsSLE patients have increased BBB permeability, mainly in the right insular area. The increased BBB permeability in the right insular region is associated with the depression/anxiety in SLE patients.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Iron metabolism can directly or indirectly affect the occurrence and development of type 2 diabetes. This meta‐analysis and systematic review aimed to analyze the association between serum iron metabolism indicators and type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods The databases PubMed and Embase were searched for studies on the correlations between serum iron metabolism indicators (iron, ferritin, transferrin, hepcidin and soluble transferrin receptor) and type 2 diabetes since January 2006. Relevant data were extracted from the included studies, and meta‐analysis was carried out. Results A total of 12 case–control and cohort studies were analyzed. Of the 12 studies, 11 described the correlation between serum ferritin levels and type 2 diabetes. The median and high serum ferritin concentrations were significantly associated with the risks of type 2 diabetes (odds ratio [OR] 1.20, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08–1.33 and OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.29–1.59, respectively). However, the low concentration was not correlated with the risk of type 2 diabetes (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.89–1.11). No significant association was observed between serum soluble transferrin receptor and type 2 diabetes, whereas the soluble transferrin receptor‐to‐ferritin ratio was significantly inversely related to the risk of type 2 diabetes in the median and high ratio subgroups (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.51, 0.99 and OR 0.65, 95% CI 0.45–0.95). Conclusions The elevated serum ferritin was one of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and soluble transferrin receptor‐to‐ferritin ratio was inversely related to the risk of type 2 diabetes. A systematic review showed that serum transferrin and hepcidin might be directly or indirectly related to the development of diabetes.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the safety and clinical efficacy of ab externo microcatheter-assisted trabeculotomy combined with deep sclerectomy and trabeculectomy (MATT-DS-Trab) in the surgical management of advanced primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).Methods: According to the inclusion criteria, we retrospectively collected and analyzed 37 POAG cases in advanced stage who received MATT-DS-Trab. The intraocular pressure (IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), use of anti-glaucoma drugs, shape of the filtering bleb, size of the scleral lake, complications, and the surgical success rate were recorded.Results: The mean IOP was 37.50 ± 8.11 mmHg before the operation, while it depleted to 10.08 ± 2.01 and 11.43 ± 2.07 mmHg at 1 week and 12 months after the operation, respectively (both P < 0.001 compared to preoperative IOP). From none to two kinds of anti-glaucoma drugs were used 12 months after surgery on the patients, which were significantly reduced compared with that preoperatively (P < 0.001). An L-type filtering bleb was the main form at all time points after the operation. At 12 months following surgery, an F-type filtering bleb accounted for 5.41% and no E-type filtering bleb was recorded. The length and height of the scleral lake shrunk with time, but there was no statistical significance (P > 0.05). Also, there was no correlation between the size of the scleral pool and the IOP (P > 0.05). At 12 months after the operation, the complete success rates were 94.59, 83.78, and 72.97% according to standards A (≤18 mmHg), B (≤15 mmHg), and C (≤12 mmHg), respectively. Intraoperative complications were mainly anterior chamber hemorrhage, and no complications related to the filtration bleb were observed after the operation.Conclusion: Based on multichannel mechanisms, MATT-DS-Trab is able to effectively reduce IOP in advanced POAG patients, with few serious complications and a high success rate.

22. Food safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of street food vendors and consumers in Handan, a third tier city in China

Abstract Background Food safety has long been the subject of scholarly research, and street food is a weak link in food safety supervision. Street food not only provides convenience for many people, but is also the livelihood for millions of low income people, making a great contribution to the economy of many developing countries. Methods Street food safety is essential, and yet it has been rarely studied in China. Therefore, a typical city in China was selected as the research object to assess food safety knowledge, attitudes, and street food suppliers and consumer behaviors using questionnaires based on previous studies, and considering China’s particular characteristics and reasonable impacts identified in previous studies, such as increased income, work experience, licenses, and locations. The food safety knowledge and attitude questionnaire conformed with the national conditions in China. It was used to assess the food safety knowledge and attitudes toward food suppliers and consumers, where three main areas were addressed in the surveys and statistical analysis, as follows. (1) Statistical information including gender, age, education, income, food safety training, and specific elements related to the work experience of suppliers. (2) Knowledge of food safety including the awareness of consumers and suppliers regarding food poisoning pathogens, food and personal hygiene, high-risk groups, and correct cleaning. (3) A list of food handling behaviors was used to determine the behaviors and characteristics of subjects. Results The results show that street food suppliers have generally poor food handling practices, and most are operating under unsanitary conditions. Food safety knowledge of street vendors in the High-tech Industries Development Zone was the lowest, most likely because these regions are located in rural-urban fringe zones, where education levels are generally relatively low. Food safety attitudes of the youngest consumers were significantly better than those of older age groups. Their educational level was also different, with correspondingly relatively high income for younger individuals. Most vendors chose locations near schools or supermarkets. Consumers and street food vendors had good understanding of food safety, but street vendors were relatively poor in carrying out safe food handling, with only 26.7% using or being fully equipped withhand-washing facilities, although more than 60% of vendors wore clean and tidy clothes and masks. Conclusions Street food vendor training should be prioritized to improve the safety of street food. Other policies and measures should also be propagated to improve the food safety knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of vendors in Handan. Steps should be taken to improve street food stall operating conditions and facilities, including providing clean protected structures, access to potable water, and efficient waste collection and disposal systems. These findings should encourage government agencies to further promote strategies to improve street food safety.

Maximum deviation global discrimination index (MDGDI) is a new item selection method for cognitive diagnostic computerized adaptive testing that allows for attribute coverage balance. We developed the maximum limitation global discrimination index (MLGDI) from MDGDI, which allows for both attribute coverage balance and item exposure control. MLGDI can realize the attribute coverage balance and exposure control of the item. Our simulation study aimed to evaluate the performance of our new method against maximum global discrimination index (GDI), modified maximum GDI (MMGDI), standardized weighted deviation GDI (SWDGDI), and constraint progressive with SWDGDI (CP_SWDGDI). The results indicated that (1a) under the condition of realizing the attribute coverage balance, MDGDI had the highest attribute classification accuracy; (1b) when the selection strategy accommodated the practical constraints of the attribute coverage balance and item exposure control, MLGDI had the highest attribute classification accuracy; (2) adding the item exposure control mechanism to the item selection method reduces the classification accuracy of the attributes of the item selection method; and (3) compared with GDI, MMGDI, SWDGDI, CP_SWDGDI, and MDGDI, MLGDI can better achieve the attribute-coverage requirement, control item exposure rate, and attribute correct classification rate.

In the past few years, we have gained a better understanding of the information processing mechanism in the human brain, which has led to advances in artificial intelligence and humanoid robots. However, among the various sensory systems, studying the somatosensory system presents the greatest challenge. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the human somatosensory system and its corresponding applications in artificial systems. Due to the uniqueness of the human hand in integrating receptor and actuator functions, we focused on the role of the somatosensory system in object recognition and action guidance. First, the low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the human skin and somatotopic organization principles along the ascending pathway, which are fundamental to artificial skin, were summarized. Second, we discuss high-level brain areas, which interacted with each other in the haptic object recognition. Based on this close-loop route, we used prosthetic upper limbs as an example to highlight the importance of somatosensory information. Finally, we present prospective research directions for human haptic perception, which could guide the development of artificial somatosensory systems.

25. Correlation Analysis between Macular Choroidal Thickness and Visual Field Mean Defect in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

To evaluate the differences in macular choroidal thickness and volume between patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and healthy controls to assess the correlation between macular choroidal thickness and visual field mean defect (MD). Methods. Case-control study. A total of 101 patients (101 eyes) with POAG who were hospitalized in our hospital and 102 healthy subjects (102 eyes) matched by age, sex, and axial length were consecutively selected as the POAG group and the control group, respectively. The macular choroidal thickness and volume in nine regions were measured in all subjects by enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). Results. The mean thicknesses of the choroid in the macular area in the POAG group and healthy group were 207.97 ± 62.83 µm and 208.24 ± 47.97 µm, and the mean volumes were 0.63 ± 0.19 µm3 and 0.64 ± 0.14 µm3. There were no significant differences in macular choroidal thickness, volumes of various macular regions, or mean choroidal thickness or volume between the POAG and healthy groups (all p>0.05). The macular choroidal thickness of various macular regions was not correlated with visual field MD in the POAG group (all p>0.05). Conclusion. The macular choroidal thicknesses and volumes in POAG patients were not significantly different from those in healthy individuals. The macular choroidal thickness was not correlated with MD in POAG patients. Therefore, macular choroidal thickness is not an appropriate parameter to evaluate damage caused by POAG, and the role of the macular choroid thickness in POAG needs to be further investigated.

26. CO2 Laser-Assisted Deep Sclerectomy Surgery Compared with Trabeculectomy in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: Two-Year Results

Purpose. To compare the effectiveness and safety of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser-assisted deep sclerectomy surgery (CLASS) and trabeculectomy (Trab) for treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods. In this retrospective and comparative study, 77 eyes of 62 patients with POAG were studied and divided into the CLASS and Trab groups. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), number of medications, surgical success rate, and complications were analyzed. Results. The mean follow-up periods were 27.89 ± 2.94 months and 26.11 ± 2.06 months in the CLASS and Trab groups, respectively. 30 eyes (24 patients) underwent CLASS and 47 eyes (38 patients) underwent Trab. The BCVA in the CLASS and Trab groups was recovered to baseline at postoperative 1 week and 1 month, respectively. At last follow-up visits, a remarkable reduction in the IOP and number of medications was observed in both groups, and no significant difference was found in those between the two groups. The complete success rates were 51.7% and 47.7% in postoperative 24 months in the CLASS and Trab groups, respectively (P>0.05). There were higher rates of delayed anterior chamber formation (21.3%) and thin-wall filtrating blebs (10.6%) in the Trab group. Meanwhile, the peripheral anterior synechiae were only observed in the CLASS group, and the ratio was 30%. Conclusions. CLASS is an effective and safe treatment modality for POAG, with fewer filtering bleb-related complications and quicker visual recovery in the early postoperative stage than trabeculectomy. The efficacy of lowering intraocular pressure was similar for both procedures.

Purpose. To evaluate the differences in macular choroidal thickness and volume among patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG), patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), and controls. Methods. A total of 50 PXG patients (50 eyes) and 56 POAG patients (56 eyes) were selected as the PXG group and the POAG group, respectively, in this case-control study. A total of 54 age-, gender-, IOP-, and axial length-matched healthy individuals (54 eyes) were selected as the control group. Enhanced-depth imaging-optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) was used to measure and analyze the choroidal thicknesses and volumes in 9 macular regions of all subjects. Results. The choroidal thicknesses in the central subfield (CSM), temporal inner macula (TIM), inferior inner macula (IIM), and temporal outer macula (TOM) and the mean macular choroidal thickness were significantly thinner in the PXG group than in the control group (all P0.05). Conclusions. The macular choroidal thicknesses and volumes (inferior and temporal) in PXG patients were thinner and smaller than those in POAG patients and healthy individuals. The role of choroidal thickness changes in the course of PXG remains unclear. A future prospective study is needed to better define these changes in PXG patients.

In satellite positioning systems, optimizing navigation satellite constellation and reducing the observation residuals are usually adopted to improve positioning precision and accuracy of the receiver. This paper presents a method to improve positioning precision by using multi-frequency navigation signals. The observation data of CAPS and GPS system are used to simulate the experiment. When the number of downlink frequencies is different, the root mean square of positioning error, improvement percentage, and standard deviation are calculated, respectively. When the number of descending frequencies is k, the root mean square of positioning error in three-dimensional space is 1/k of that in single frequency. The theoretical derivation and experiment show that the precision of satellite positioning can be effectively improved by using multi-frequency navigation signals. The research work can provide theoretical support and data reference for the future research of satellite positioning.

Purpose. To compare long-term effects of trabeculectomy on pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods. This retrospective case-control study included 53 eyes of PXG and 76 eyes of POAG. Intraocular pressure (IOP), number of antiglaucoma medications used, surgical success rate, and occurrence of complications were observed and statistically analyzed in both groups at 3 and 6 months and at 1, 3, and 5 years after trabeculectomy. Surgical success was defined according to the following 3 criteria: (1) IOP ≤ 21 mmHg; (2) IOP ≤ 18 mmHg; (3) IOP ≤ 15 mmHg. Complete success is defined as patients met these criteria without medical treatment, and qualified success is defined as patients met these criteria with medical treatment (≤3 medications). Cumulative probabilities of success were compared using the Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. Results. For the 3 criteria, there were no statistically significant differences in complete and qualified success rates between the two groups at 3 and 6 months after trabeculectomy (P>0.05). For criterion A, complete success rates in PXG at 3 and 5 years after surgery were lower than those in POAG; for criterion B, complete and qualified success rates in PXG at 3 and 5 years after surgery were lower than those in POAG; for criterion C, complete and qualified success rates in PXG at 1, 3, and 5 years after surgery were lower than those in POAG, the differences were statistically significant (P

Purpose. To evaluate the difference in macular choroidal thickness and volume between patients with pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG), patients with pseudoexfoliative syndrome (PEX), and normal controls. Methods. This case-control study included 49 PXG patients (group A), 33 PEX patients (group B), and 42 sex-, age-, and axial length-matched healthy volunteer eyes (group C). The macular choroidal thickness and volume of all subjects studied were measured by enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography. Results. The average macular (AM) choroidal thickness was 170.79 ± 50.18 μm, 184.65 ± 57.54 μm, and 206.46 ± 48.90 μm, and the average volume was 0.52 ± 0.15 μm3, 0.56 ± 0.17 μm3, and 0.63 ± 0.15 μm3 in groups A, B, and C, respectively. The macular choroidal thickness, the volumes of various macular regions, and the average choroidal thickness and volume in group A were lower than those in group C (all P0.05). The macular choroidal thickness and volume of the TIM and SOM in group B were lower than those in group C (P0.05). Conclusion. The macular choroidal thickness in patients with PXG or PEX (TIM and SOM) is thinner than that in normal subjects. The macular choroidal thickness in patients with PXG is not significantly different from that in patients with PEX. The role of macular choroidal thickness changes in the glaucomatous damage of patients with PXG is still unclear.

Abstract Taking advantages of reticular proteins and reductive groups on the surface, eggshell membrane (ESM) was selected to synthesize MnO2 nanoparticles from potassium permanganate through a super simple way in which ESM acted as both template and reductant. This process avoided harsh reaction conditions or complicated aftertreatments and thus owned the merits of green synthesis, handy operation, low cost, and easy purification. The ESM-templated MnO2 nanoparticles (MnO2 NPs/ESM) were characterized, and the content of nanomaterials on the template was tested. MnO2 NPs/ESM showed a good capacity for decontamination of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The macroscopical materials can be separated easily by taking the membrane out to stop the degradation instead of centrifugation or filtration. It was studied that 72.27% of TCH (50 mg/L) was decontaminated in 20 min by 0.1920 g/L MnO2 nanoparticles, and removal efficiency could reach 83.10% after 60 min under buffered condition. The kinetics was studied with or without buffer, and it was concluded that the degradation process followed a pseudo-second-order model. The facile synthesis of materials and effective degradation would facilitate the nano-MnO2-based decontamination applications.

Study DesignRetrospective case series.PurposeTo investigate the clinical efficacy and feasibility of one-stage anterolateral debridement, bone grafting, and internal fixation for treating lumbosacral tuberculosis.Overview of LiteratureThere has been no consensus regarding the optimal means of treating lumbosacral tuberculosis. The one-stage anterolateral extraperitoneal approach for radical debridement, bone grafting, and internal fixation for treating lumbosacral tuberculosis is rare in literature.MethodsTwenty-one patients with lumbosacral tuberculosis were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent the surgery of anterolateral debridement after regularly antituberculous drugs therapy. We evaluated the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, radiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, visual analogue score, and Oswestry disability index before and after surgery.ResultsAll patients completed a follow-up survey 9–48 months after surgery. All patients' wounds healed well without chronic infection or sinus formation, and all patients with low-back pain reported relief after surgery. All cases had no tuberculosis recurrence. Solid bony fusion was achieved within 6–12 months. At final follow-up, evaluated the erythrocyte sedimentation rate decreased from 38.1±12.5 to 11.3±7.1 mm/hr, C-reactive protein decreased from 6.2±4.2 to 1.6±1.3 mg/dL, the visual analog scale score decreased from 4.6±1.1 to 1.4±1.0, the Oswestry disability index score decreased from 50.2%±11.9% to 13.0%±6.6%, and the lumbosacral angle increased from 20.0°±4.8° to 29.0°±3.9° (p

Eggshell membrane (ESM) is selected as biotemplate to prepare MnO2 submicroparticles (SMPs) using Chinese Brush with sodium hydroxide solution. The size with average 710 nm of the obtained materials is in good consistency with the microsructured biotemplate. An efficient and convenient absorbent for methylene blue (MB) is developed. The removal efficiency could reach up to 93% in 35 min under room temperature without pH adjusting owing to the excellent adsorption from ESM itself and hydroxyl group formed on the surface of MnO2 crystal in the aqueous solution. Materials on the membrane can be separated from the wastewater simply to avoid the secondary pollution caused by the leak of material. This interesting approach to MnO2 SMPs and facile operation for MB adsorption could open a new path to the submicro-materials based wastewater treatment

Non-point source pollution from excessive use of fertilizers in agriculture is a major cause of the eutrophication problem in China. Understanding farmers’ decision-making concerning fertilization and identifying the influencing factors in this process are key to tackling overfertilization and related pollution issues. This paper reports a study on modelling decisions about fertilizer use based on data collected from 200 farmer households in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of China, using a well-fitted artificial neural network (ANN) with incorporated variance-based sensitivity analysis. The rate of fertilizer use estimated from the model is in good agreement with observed data. The model is further validated and tested by comparing the simulated and observed values. Results show that the model is able to identify the influencing factors and their interactions causing the variation in fertilizer use and to help pinpoint the underlying reasons. It is found that the farmers’ fertilization behavior is greatly affected by the area of cultivated land, followed by the interaction among farmers’ education level, annual income, and awareness of the importance of environmental protection. Future land consolidation is one of several ways to achieve more sustainable fertilization strategies.

The author established the intuitive interval value fuzzy set evaluation model based on characteristics of the network relationship among decision makers, and validated for a multiple attribute decision making case study. Thus, the proposed model provides a reliable, accurate method for multiple attribute decision making.

ATP induces pain via activation of purinergic receptors in nociceptive sensory nerves. ATP signaling is terminated by ATP hydrolysis mediated by cell surface-localized ecto-nucleotidases. Using enzymatic histochemical staining, we show that ecto-ATPase activity is present in mouse trigeminal nerves. Using immunofluorescence staining, we found that ecto-NTPDase3 is expressed in trigeminal nociceptive neurons and their projections to the brainstem. In addition, ecto-ATPase activity and ecto-NTPDase3 are also detected in the nociceptive outermost layer of the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. Furthermore, we demonstrate that incubation with anti-NTPDase3 serum reduces extracellular ATP degradation in the nociceptive lamina of both the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis and the spinal cord dorsal horn. These results are consistent with neuronal NTPDase3 activity modulating pain signal transduction and transmission by affecting extracellular ATP hydrolysis within the trigeminal nociceptive pathway. Thus, disruption of trigeminal neuronal NTPDase3 expression and localization to presynaptic terminals during chronic inflammation, local constriction and injury may contribute to the pathogenesis of orofacial neuropathic pain.

Stellaria media (Linn.) Villars is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for over 200 years, mainly for the treatment of dermatitis and other skin diseases. It has also been used as an anti-viral agent. All the fresh chickweed juice samples used in this study were prepared using macroporous resin and ultrafiltration technology. The anti-hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity of S. media was evaluated in vitro using the human HBV-transfected liver cell line HepG2.2.15. The concentrations of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in HepG2.2.15 cell culture medium were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) after S. media-n (SM-n) treatment for 6 or 9 days. HBV DNA was quantified using transcription-mediated amplification and real-time polymerase chain reaction. In HepG2.2.15 cells, 30 μg/mL SM-3 effectively suppressed the secretion of HBsAg and HBeAg with inhibition rates of 27.92% and 25.35% after 6 days of treatment, respectively. Consistent with the reduction in HBV antigens, SM-3 also reduced the level of HBV DNA in a dose-dependent manner. The characterization and quantitation of the chemical composition of SM-3 showed the presence of flavonoid C-glycosides, polysaccharides, and protein, which exhibited diverse antiviral activities. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that SM-3 possesses potential anti-HBV activity in vitro. This is the first report demonstrating the anti-HBV effects of S. media, which is currently under early development as a potential anti-HBV drug candidate.

Borna disease virus (BDV) is a neurotropic virus that produces neuropsychiatric dysfunction in a wide range of warm-blooded species. Several studies have associated BDV with human psychiatric illness, but the findings remain controversial. Although oligodendrocytes are a major glial component of brain white matter and play a pivotal role in neuronal cell function, BDV's effects on human oligodendrocytes have not been clarified. Here, the effects of two BDV strains, Hu-H1 (isolated from a bipolar patient) and Strain V (a laboratory strain), on the proliferation and apoptosis of human oligodendrocytes were investigated. Three experimental cell lines were constructed: Hu-H1-infected oligodendroglioma (Hu-H1) cells, Strain V-infected oligodendroglioma (Strain V) cells, and non-infected oligodendroglioma (control) cells. BDV infection was assayed by BDV nucleoprotein (p40) immunofluorescence, cell proliferation was assayed by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8), and cell cycle phases and apoptosis were assayed by flow cytometry. Expressions of the apoptosis-related proteins Bax and Bcl-2 were measured by Western blotting. p40 expression was confirmed in Hu-H1 and Strain V on and after day three post-infection. Strain V cells showed significantly greater cellular proliferation than Hu-H1 cells on and after day three post-infection. In Hu-H1 cells, Bax and Bcl-2 expression were significantly increased and decreased, respectively, on and after day three post-infection. In contrast, in Strain V cells, Bax and Bcl-2 expression were significantly decreased and increased, respectively, on and after day three post-infection. In conclusion, Hu-H1 inhibits cellular proliferation and promotes apoptosis in human oligodendrocytes via Bax upregulation and Bcl-2 downregulation. In contrast, Strain V promotes cellular proliferation and inhibits apoptosis in human oligodendrocytes via Bax downregulation and Bcl-2 upregulation. The effects of the Hu-H1 strain (isolated from a bipolar patient) are opposite from those of Strain V (a laboratory strain), thereby providing a proof of authenticity for both.

BACKGROUND: Borna disease virus is a neurotropic, non-cytolytic virus that has been widely employed in neuroscientific research. Previous studies have revealed that metabolic perturbations are associated with Borna disease viral infection. However, the pathophysiological mechanism underlying its mode of action remains unclear. METHODOLOGY: Human oligodendroglia cells infected with the human strain Borna disease virus Hu-H1 and non-infected matched control cells were cultured in vitro. At day 14 post-infection, a proton nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabonomic approach was used to differentiate the metabonomic profiles of 28 independent intracellular samples from Borna disease virus-infected cells (n = 14) and matched control cells (n = 14). Partial least squares discriminant analysis was performed to demonstrate that the whole metabonomic patterns enabled discrimination between the two groups, and further statistical testing was applied to determine which individual metabolites displayed significant differences between the two groups. FINDINGS: Metabonomic profiling revealed perturbations in 23 metabolites, 19 of which were deemed individually significant: nine energy metabolites (α-glucose, acetate, choline, creatine, formate, myo-inositol, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, pyruvate, succinate) and ten amino acids (aspartate, glutamate, glutamine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tyrosine, valine). Partial least squares discriminant analysis demonstrated that the whole metabolic patterns enabled statistical discrimination between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Borna disease viral infection perturbs the metabonomic profiles of several metabolites in human oligodendroglia cells cultured in vitro. The findings suggest that Borna disease virus manipulates the host cell's metabolic network to support viral replication and proliferation.
