Abstract The period of polar domain (d) in ferroics was commonly believed to scale with corresponding film thicknesses (h), following the classical Kittel’s law of d ∝ $$\sqrt{h}$$ h . Here, we have not only observed that this relationship fails in the case of polar skyrmions, where the period shrinks nearly to a constant value, or even experiences a slight increase, but also discovered that skyrmions have further persisted in [(PbTiO3)2/(SrTiO3)2]10 ultrathin superlattices. Both experimental and theoretical results indicate that the skyrmion periods (d) and PbTiO3 layer thicknesses in superlattice (h) obey the hyperbolic function of d = Ah + $$\frac{{{\mbox{B}}}}{h}$$ B h other than previous believed, simple square root law. Phase-field analysis indicates that the relationship originates from the different energy competitions of the superlattices with PbTiO3 layer thicknesses. This work exemplified the critical size problems faced by nanoscale ferroelectric device designing in the post-Moore era.

Background: Cancer is one of the top two leading causes of death worldwide. Ethnobotanical research, it is one of methods, which is able to discover effective anticancer drugs based on “prototype” of indigenous people’s historical experiences and practices. The rhizomes of Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis (Franch.) Hand.-Mazz. have been used as botanical drugs to treat cancer by Yi, Bai, Dai, and Naxi ethnic groups in Yunnan, China, where this species is widely cultivated in a large scale in Yunnan.Materials and methods: To identify the substances of anticancer activities based on indigenous medicine knowledge, chromatography was performed to separate saponins from the rhizomes of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis, followed by spectroscopy to determine the structure of six isolated saponins. The cytotoxicity of five extracts and six pure compounds were evaluated by MTS method. Quantitative determination of total saponins of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis was analyzed by HPLC. Cell cycle assay, apoptosis assay, and mitochondrial membrane potential were used to evaluate the pro-apoptotic activity in vitro.Results: Five extracts and six pure saponins showed significant inhibitory cytotoxic activities of three human liver cancer cell lines (SMMC-7721, HepG2, and SK-HEP-1) and one non-small-cell lung cancer cell line (A549). The contents of Paris saponins I, II, and VII were 6.96% in the rhizomes of P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis, much higher than Chinese Pharmacopoeia standards (0.6%). Six saponins induced significant apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in three human cancer cell lines (A549, SMMC-7721, and HepG2), which was associated with the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential.Conclusion: The result of this study support that cultivated P. polyphylla var. yunnanensis could be a substitute for wild resource as an anticancer medicine based on indigenous medicine knowledge.

Abstract Background Home garden is identified as a kind of small-scale land-use system which is used to manage and cultivate useful plants by local people, and home gardens can provide various plant products and services. Investigating home gardens was regarded as an effective way to understand the biodiversity-related local knowledge and culture of native people in Ethnobiology and Ethnoecology. Home garden is important in less developed and remote areas. The grand canyon of Yarlung Tsangpo is designed as one of the biodiversity hotspots of China, and it is one of the most remote regions of China, because of the rough traffic conditions. The aim of the present study is to collect, record, and document the plants and their local knowledge and functions in the local home gardens, then attempt to answer the question: “why local people selected these plants?” Material and methods The study area was in Beibeng Township of Motuo County in the grand canyon of Yarlung Tsangpo. Observation and semi-structure interviews with informed consent were used to collect data in field study. All information was collected and organized, then documented based on “ethno-species” as a fundamental unit. All of the information of local use and knowledge were organized as the list of “use-report” for quantitative analysis, and the local uses of plants were merged into 14 use categories. Frequency of citation (FC), relative frequency of citation (RFC), cultural importance index (CI), and cultural value index (CV) were used in quantitative analysis. Besides, the Jaccard Index was used to compare the similarity in plant species selection among different communities. Results A total of 78 home gardens in the 9 communities of Beibeng Township were visited, and 196 ethno-species were collected. These ethno-species were identified into 188 Botanical taxa. A total of 87 home garden owners as informants were interviewed in the present study, and they provided 625 use-reports to us. The top 5 important plants were Su-lan-tsao (Dendrobium nobile), Sa-ga (Zingiber officinale), Soe-lu (Capsicum annuum), Snying-pa (Citrus medica), and Kham-pu (Prunus persica), according to the quantitative analysis. The most citied use-category was “vegetable,” followed by “ornamental plant,” “medicine,” and “fruit.” The altitude might be the most important impact factor of the plant diversity and composition of home gardens, and the traffic conditions, local terrain, also impact the plant diversity and composition of home gardens. Conclusion In remote areas such as the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, the plants in home gardens are important sources of plant products such as foods, herbal medicines, and fibers to support daily lives. The local home gardens in Tsang-la communities had high diversity of plants, and these plants provided many functions and services to support daily lives of local people. Local plant knowledge, including the features, life forms, habits, habitats, and use values of plants, were the summary of the understanding of local people to their surrounding plant worlds. Local people selected appropriate plants to cultivate and manage in their home gardens under the guidance of the local plant knowledge. That is the answer to the question “why local people selected these plants?”

The Midas touch is reflected by the interactive feedback of interface functional elements, and a low level of spatial accuracy is related to the interaction area. This study tried to solve these two problems from the perspective of human-computer interactions and ergonomics. Two experiments were conducted to explore the optimum target size and gaze-triggering dwell time of the eye–computer interaction (ECI) system. Experimental Series 1 was used as the pre-experiment to identify the size that has a greater task completion rate. Experimental Series 2 was used as the main experiment to investigate the optimum gaze-triggering dwell time by using a comprehensive evaluation of the task completion rate, reaction time, and NASA-TLX (Task Load Index). In Experimental Series 1, the optimal element size was determined to be 256 × 256p x2. The conclusion of Experimental Series 2 was that when the dwell time is set to 600 ms, the efficiency of the interface is the highest, and the task load of subjects is minimal as well. Finally, the results of Experiment Series 1 and 2 have positive effects on improving the usability of the interface. The optimal control size and the optimal dwell time obtained from the experiments have certain reference and application value for interface design and software development of the ECI system.

This paper proposes a new fractional-order chaotic system with five terms. Firstly, basic dynamical properties of the fractional-order system are investigated in terms of the stability of equilibrium points, Jacobian matrices theoretically. Furthermore, rich dynamics with interesting characteristics are demonstrated by phase portraits, bifurcation diagrams numerically. Besides, the control problem of the new fractional-order system is discussed via numerical simulations. Our results demonstrate that the new fractional-order system has compound structure.

To reduce the considerable investments of toxicity testing and protecting animal welfare, a new toxicity testing strategy based on response pathways of human cell lines has been proposed in the United States to evaluate the chemical exposure risks to human health. However, the in vitro high-throughput assays have not yet been fully applied in ecotoxicity testing. This paper proposes a framework for high-efficiency ecotoxicity testing strategies to evaluate the ecological risk of chemicals. It consists of pathway-based toxicity testing, embryo-based toxicity testing, and predictive toxicology and data extrapolation, etc., according to different situations. The results of ecotoxicity testing or data mining are analyzed together with physicochemical properties, environmental fate, and exposure data of chemicals to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment of chemicals. The framework provides valuable points to establish high-efficiency ecotoxicity testing strategies in the 21st century.

This paper investigates the adaptive cluster synchronization in the complex networks with different orders. By means of Lyapunov stability theory and the adaptive control technique, a novel adaptive synchronization controller is developed. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed method, the examples for the synchronization of systems with the chaotic and hyperchaotic node dynamics are presented.

Synchronization is the strongest form of collective phenomena in complex systems of interacting components. In this paper, the problem of cluster projective synchronization of complex networks with fractional-order nodes based on the fractional-order differential equation stability theory is investigated. Only the nodes in one community which have direct connections to the nodes in other communities are controlled. Some sufficient synchronization conditions are derived via pinning control. Numerical simulations are provided to show the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

This paper investigates the adaptive - synchronization of the fractional-order chaotic systems with nonidentical structures. Based on the stability of fractional-order systems and adaptive control technique, a general formula for designing the controller and parameters update law is proposed to achieve adaptive - synchronization between two different chaotic systems with different structures. The effective scheme parameters identification and - synchronization of chaotic systems can be realized simultaneously. Furthermore, two typical illustrative numerical simulations are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, for each case, we design the controller and parameter update laws in detail. The numerical simulations are performed to verify the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

The hybrid projective synchronization for fractional-order chaotic systems with time delay is investigated in this paper. On the basis of stability analysis of fractional-order systems and pole placement technique, a novel and general approach is proposed. The hybrid projective synchronization of fractional-order chaotic and hyperchaotic systems with time delay is achieved via designing an appropriate controller. Corresponding numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization scheme. Furthermore, the influence of the fractional order on the synchronization process is discussed. The result reveals that the fractional order has a significant effect on the synchronization speed.

While increasing scholarly research from various perspectives has affirmed the therapeutic role of urban green spaces for individuals with depression, there is a notable gap in understanding how different landscape features of these spaces can collectively create a soothing and healing environment. The objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the impact of urban green spaces on patients with depression and conduct a comprehensive on-site audit of these spaces to reveal the rules of combination and matching of the constituent elements of healing landscapes. This research investigated 210 urban green spaces in the cities of Guangzhou and Foshan, China. The study focused on three key attributes: the healing landscape quality of urban green spaces, the perceived restorative impact on patients with depression, and the enhancement of positive emotions. Utilizing rough set analysis, the study successfully identified 16 effective rules that elucidate the combination scenarios of landscape characteristics in urban green spaces. For example, the rules that have a positive impact on the perceived recovery of patients with depression indicate that the healing landscape condition attributes should be in the following state: the openness and view of the urban green space (A1 = 1); the color of the urban green space (A2 = 1); public art or various installations should be located as much as possible in the visual center of the place (A5 = 3); there are trees and shrubs around (A8 = 2); and the location sunshine duration (A9 = 1). This study indicates that while individual landscape healing elements are considered to have positive effects on patients with depression, their combined application within complex real-world environments may adversely affect the emotional fluctuations of these patients. Many beneficial factors do not operate in isolation but interact synergistically to produce a healing effect. These findings not only provide a theoretical foundation for the evaluation of urban green spaces but also offer valuable decision-making references for local policymakers and landscape designers. Discovering new treatments for melanoma will benefit human health. The mechanism by which deoxyhypusine synthase (DHPS) promotes melanoma development remains elucidated. Multi‐omics studies have revealed that DHPS regulates m6A modification and maintains mRNA stability in melanoma cells. Mechanistically, DHPS activates the hypusination of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF5A) to assist METTL3 localizing on its mRNA for m6A modification, then promoting METTL3 expression. Structure‐based design, synthesis, and activity screening yielded the hit compound GL‐1 as a DHPS inhibitor. Notably, GL‐1 directly inhibits DHPS binding to eIF5A, whereas GC‐7 cannot. Based on the clarification of the mode of action of GL‐1 on DHPS, it is found that GL‐1 can promote the accumulation of intracellular Cu2+ to induce apoptosis, and antibody microarray analysis shows that GL‐1 inhibits the expression of several cytokines. GL‐1 shows promising antitumor activity with good bioavailability in a xenograft tumor model. These findings clarify the molecular mechanisms by which DHPS regulates melanoma proliferation and demonstrate the potential of GL‐1 for clinical melanoma therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The widespread dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) and its drug resistance transfer poses a global public health threat. While previous studies outlined CRKP's drug resistance mechanism, there is limited research on strategies inhibiting CRKP drug resistance spread. This study investigates the potential of Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum) FB1-1, a probiotic, in curbing the spread of drug resistance among CRKP by evaluating its cell-free supernatant (CFS) for antibacterial activity. Evaluating the inhibitory effect of FB1-1 CFS on CRKP drug resistance spread involved analyzing its impact on drug resistance and virulence gene expression; drug resistance plasmid transfer FB1-1 CFS exhibited an MIC range of 125 μL/mL against CRKP. After eight hours of co-culture, CFS achieved a 96% and 100% sterilization rate at two and four times the MIC, respectively. At sub-inhibitory concentrations (1/2× MIC), FB1-1 CFS reduced the expression of the bla_KPC gene, which is pivotal for carbapenem resistance, by up to 62.13% across different CRKP strains. Additionally, it markedly suppressed the expression of the uge gene, a key virulence factor, by up to 91%, and the fim_H gene, essential for bacterial adhesion, by up to 53.4%. Our study primarily focuses on determining the inhibitory effect of FB1-1 CFS on CRKP strains harboring the bla_KPC gene, which is a critical resistance determinant in CRKP. Furthermore, FB1-1 CFS demonstrated the ability to inhibit the transfer of drug resistance plasmids among CRKP strains, thus limiting the horizontal spread of resistance genes. This study highlights FB1-1 CFS's inhibitory effect on CRKP drug resistance spread, particularly in strains carrying the bla_KPC gene, thus offering a novel idea and theoretical foundation for developing antibacterial drugs targeting CRKP resistance.
