CD1d-restricted natural killer T (NKT) cells are innate-like T lymphocytes with protective or pathogenic roles in the development of influenza pneumonia. Here, we show that lung-infiltrated and activated NKT cells are the major cellular source of LIGHT/TNFSF14, which determines the severity of pulmonary pneumonia by highly deteriorative influenza A virus (IAV) infection. Compared to wild-type mice, LIGHT−/− mice exhibit much lower morbidity and mortality to IAV, due to alleviated lung damage and reduced apoptosis of alveolar macrophages (AMs). LIGHT preferentially promotes cell death of lymphotoxin β receptors positive (LTβR+) AMs but not herpesvirus entry mediator positive (HVEM+) AMs. Therefore, these results suggest that NKT-derived LIGHT augments cell death of the tissue protective AMs in exacerbating lung pathology and susceptibility to fatal influenza infection. Suppression of LIGHT signaling might be a viable option in the treatment of influenza-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Zika virus (ZIKV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) are closely related flaviviruses, ZIKV circulates in the population that has been JEV vaccinated in Southeast Asian countries. This alerts that a pre-existing immunity to JEV would impact ZIKV infection and/or pathogenesis. Herein we showed that the pre-existing immunity to JEV SA14-14-2 vaccination provided an ample protection against non-lethal or lethal dose of ZIKV infection in mice. This was in sharp contrast to the passive immunization of JEV antibodies, which failed to affect ZIKV infection or pathogenesis in mice, albeit these antibodies exhibited cross-reactivity and antibody dependent enhancement (ADE) of ZIKV infection in vitro. Furthermore, we determined that JEV vaccine-elicited CD8+ T cells were required to mediate the heterotypic protection of ZIKV infection, which cross-reacted to ZIKV E and NS5 antigens (E294-302 and NS52839-2848). Adoptive transfer of these CD8+ T cells could partially protect the mice from ZIKV challenge. Therefore, although short of epidemiological evidence, these results suggested that cross-reactive CD8+ T cells activated by JEV vaccination could protect potential ZIKV infection in human populations.

In this work, the electron-phonon, phonon-phonon, and phonon structure scattering mechanisms and their effect on the thermal and thermoelectric properties of a silver nanowire (AgNW) is investigated in the temperature range of 10 to 300 K. The electron-phonon scattering rate decreases with the increase of temperature. The phonon-phonon scattering rate increases with temperature and becomes greater than the electron-phonon scattering rate when the temperature is higher than the Debye temperature (223 K). The rate of phonon structure scattering is constant. The total phonon scattering rate decreases with temperature when the temperature is lower than about 150 K, and increases when the temperature is higher than 150 K. Correspondingly, the temperature dependent variation trend of the lattice thermal conductivity is opposite diametrically to that of the total phonon scattering rate. The pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, that causes pine wilt disease (PWD), has severely damaged forests and ecosystems in countries of East Asia and Europe. Since the high propagation rate of PWD is the main cause of the devastating disease, it is very important to interfere with the spread of PWN mediated by its insect vector (Monochamus alternatus). In order to explore new methods and approaches for the prevention and control of pine wood nematode disease, chemicals with attraction or repellency to pine wood nematode and stable diffusion or volatilization in infected wood were screened out to interfere and hinder the pupa chamber effect, the aggregation behavior of PWN to pupa chamber in M. alternatus. In the present study, 22 chemicals were inoculated on water agar medium and infected wood to verify the tropism of PWN toward the chemicals from the aspects of attraction and repellency. The results indicate that linoleic acid, oleic acid, diacetyl and β-myrcene have attractive effects on PWN, while kerosene and β-humulene have repellent effects on PWN and are able to stably permeate and volatilize within pine trees. This research shows that some chemicals can affect the movement behavior of PWN and interfere with its migration to the pupal chamber in M. alternatus, thus reducing the dispersal efficiency of PWNs carried by insect vectors. This chemically based strategy would provide novel approaches for effective controlling of pine wilt disease.

Bcl-2-associated athanogene 1 (Bag-1) is a multifunctional and antiapoptotic protein that binds to the antiapoptosis regulator Bcl-2 and promotes cell survival. To investigate the protective function of Bag-1, we examined the effects of Bag-1L, one isoform of Bag-1, in an in vitro cell culture model of lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (LIRI) generated by treatment of A549 cells with hypoxia/reoxygenation. Overexpression of full-length Bag-1L increased the viability of A549 cells and reduced cell apoptosis in response to 6 h of hypoxia/reoxygenation treatment. Furthermore, Bag-1L overexpression enhanced the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and Bcl-2 protein levels, increased the phosphorylation of AKT, decreased Bax and cleaved caspase-3 levels, and was able to overcome cell cycle arrest. These effects were not observed in A549 cells overexpressing a truncated form of Bag-1L lacking the “Bag domain,” denoted Bag-1L△C. The “Bag domain” is the C-terminal 47 amino acids. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that Bag-1L overexpression can protect against oxidative stress and apoptosis in an in vitro LIRI model, with a dependence on the Bag domain.

Steroid 5β-reductase [aldo-keto reductase family 1 member D1 (AKR1D1)] is essential for bile acid biosynthesis. Bile acid deficiency caused by genetic defects in AKR1D1 leads to life-threatening neonatal hepatitis and cholestasis. There is still limited experience regarding the treatment of this disease. We describe an infant who presented with hyperbilirubinemia and coagulopathy but normal bile acid and γ-glutamyltransferase. Gene analysis was performed using genomic DNA from peripheral lymphocytes from the patient, his parents, and his elder brother. The patient was compound heterozygous for c.919C>T in exon 8 and exhibited a loss of heterozygosity of the AKR1D1 gene, which led to an amino acid substitution of arginine by cysteine at amino acid position 307 (p.R307C). Based on these mutations, the patient was confirmed to have primary 5β-reductase deficiency. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) treatment did not have any effect on the patient. However, when we changed to chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) treatment, his symptoms and laboratory tests gradually improved. It is therefore crucial to supplement with an adequate dose of CDCA early to improve clinical symptoms and to normalize laboratory tests.

In view of the defects of the civil airport security evaluation and the uncertain factors in it, a new civil airport security comprehensive evaluation method was proposed based on the improved unascertained measure theory. The research shows that: Firstly, the unascertained functions meet the requirements of non-negativity, additivity and normalization, which are the most obvious differences between unascertained mathematical functions and fuzzy membership functions; the unascertained functions of different indicators could be different as well as the unascertained functions of the same index on different grades. Secondly, introducing the concept of entropy, which is based on objective data, greatly reduces the subjectivity of the weight. Thirdly, the credible degree theory is introduced to analyze the comprehensive measurement vector, the range of which is usually between 0.6 and 0.9. Finally, when comes to the security evaluation of multi-airports, if these airports’ security situation belong to one level, comprehensive safety score of each airport could be calculated according to the comprehensive measure vector, on the basis of which the security situation of each airport could be compared. The example shows that the method is simple and effective.This study provides a new way for the security evaluation of civil airport.

China's energy carbon emissions are projected to peak in 2030 with approximately 110% of its 2020 level under the following conditions: 1) China's gross primary energy consumption is 5 Gtce in 2020 and 6 Gtce in 2030; 2) coal's share of the energy consumption is 61% in 2020 and 55% in 2030; 3) non-fossil energy's share increases from 15% in 2020 to 20% in 2030; 4) through 2030, China's GDP grows at an average annual rate of 6%; 5) the annual energy consumption elasticity coefficient is 0.30 in average; and 6) the annual growth rate of energy consumption steadily reduces to within 1%. China's electricity generating capacity would be 1,990 GW, with 8,600 TW h of power generation output in 2020. Of that output 66% would be from coal, 5% from gas, and 29% from non-fossil energy. By 2030, electricity generating capacity would reach 3,170 GW with 11,900 TW h of power generation output. Of that output, 56% would be from coal, 6% from gas, and 37% from non-fossil energy. From 2020 to 2030, CO 2 emissions from electric power would relatively fall by 0.2 Gt due to lower coal consumption, and relatively fall by nearly 0.3 Gt with the installation of more coal-fired cogeneration units. During 2020–2030, the portion of carbon emissions from electric power in China's energy consumption is projected to increase by 3.4 percentage points. Although the carbon emissions from electric power would keep increasing to 118% of the 2020 level in 2030, the electric power industry would continue to play a decisive role in achieving the goal of increase in non-fossil energy use. This study proposes countermeasures and recommendations to control carbon emissions peak, including energy system optimization, green-coal-fired electricity generation, and demand side management.

Background: Spinal metastases are the most common type of metastatic bone tumors. Various therapeutic approaches have been used to treat spinal metastases, but traditional treatments are often limited and ineffective. Minimally invasive interventional technology has been successfully performed in the clinical setting. Objectives: This study is designed to evaluate the curative effect of spinal metastases treated by percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and transcatheter arterial infusion/chemoembolization (TAI/TACE). Patients and Methods: A prospective study was performed for 18 consecutive patients with spinal metastases justified by imaging findings and pathology, including 12 men and 6 women, with the mean age of 64.56 ± 11.07 years (range, 50 - 90 years). All patients first underwent PVP and then TAI/TACE. The degree of pain relief was assessed with visual analogue scale (VAS) and WHO standard. The rating of the activity of daily life (ADL) was utilized to evaluate the quality of life. The activities of daily life (ADL) were evaluated with modified Barthel index system. The size of tumor and further bone invasion were evaluated three months after surgery. Results: We achieved a 100% success rate of all interventional operations. The effective rates of pain relief were respectively 94%, 94%, 89%, and 78% for one-day post-op, one-week post-op, one-month post-op, and three-months post-op. VAS for back pain was 7.7 ± 0.8, 5.3 ± 0.6, 3.4 ± 0.8, 2.0 ± 0.6, and 1.5 ± 0.6 for pre-operative, one-day post-op, one-week post-op, one-month post-op, and three-months post-op, respectively. The improvement of VAS was respectively 2.3 ± 0.6, 4.3 ± 0.9, 1.4 ± 0.8, and 1.8 ± 0.7. Preoperative and postoperative 3 months Barthel index was 45.3 ± 12.5 and 85.6 ± 14.2, respectively. There were significant difference in pain relief and the ability of daily life between pre-operation and post-operation time points (P < 0.05). There were no severe clinical or radiographic complications after interventions. Conclusion: PVP combined with TAI/TACE is a safe and effective technique for treatment of spinal metastases. PVP is effective for pain relief but has a limited antitumor effect, while TACE kills tumors more thoroughly compared to PVP. The combination of two therapies can make up for the shortcomings of each other and obtain definite effect, which markedly improves the patients’ living quality.

Summary The aim of this research was to determine the chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the essential oils from Metaplexis japonica and isolation of antibacterial constituents from the essential oils. Results showed that 63 components were identified in essential oils. Phenylethyl alcohol (77.978%), α-terpineol (31.810%) and docosane (21.644%) were the most abundent constituents of flower oil, leaf oil and fruit oil, respectively. Based on bioactivity-guided fractionation, three active constituents were isolated and identified as phenylethyl alcohol, α-terpineol and β-linalool. Both flower oil and phenylethyl alcohol showed high antibacterial performance, with inhibition zone from 25 ± 0.5 to 11 ± 0.6 mm at highest concentration, and MIC values ranging from 0.125 to 2%. In both DPPH and ABTS assay, the oils showed moderate antioxidant activity. These results indicate potential efficacy of active constituents and essential oils of M. japonica to control food-borne pathogenic and spoilage bacteria.

The human risks of As and heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cd and Hg) in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Xining, China is investigated here in this study. Cu, As and Pb are the most abundant elements in stationary monitoring station for atmospheric pollution and mountain Najia. As, Pb and Cr are the most abundant elements in the park of organisms and Xining Special Steel between the studied metals and metalloids in PM2.5. Pb and As showed a higher bio-accessibility. It has been shown that the carcinogenic risks of As, Cd, Cr and Ni in PM2.5 via dermal contact and inhalation exposure are within the acceptable level (-4) for both children and adults, but there is a potential carcinogenic risk posed by Pb via ingestion. As for non-carcinogenic health risks, the hazard index values for all the studied elements suggested no health risks via ingestion and dermal contact, but a potential one via inhalation of adults. Values of hazard quotient and hazard index indicated the non-carcinogenic risks from the studied metals and metalloids to children via ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation pathways during heating period in Xining given the present air quality .

PM2.5 is one of the most important components in air pollution. It is also the focus of the most closely watched at home and abroad. Based on its small size, complex components, and strongenvironmental activity, it can be used as a carrier for chemicals, heavy metals, bacteria, toxins and carcinogens into the body. Then, as a result, it will affect Human Body Health. Heavy metals are important components of PM2.5, and the long-term accumulation of heavy metals in PM2.5 poses a great threat on human health and the environment. This paper reviewed the sources, distribution methods,chemical form, detection methods, disposal way, research progress of heavy metals in PM2.5. As a result, it provided a reference for in-depth study on the future.

The depth variations of soil physicochemical properties in the degraded native grasslands and the artificially restored grasslands were studied in the Three-river headwater areas of Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, China. The results showed: (1) With the increase of the gradient of restoration years, soil water content, total chemical properties, total potassium, phosphorus, available phosphorus and potassium were increased thereafter in the artificial grasslands. (2) With the increase of grassland degradation gradient, soil water content was gradually reduced, and the total N, K, the organic matter didnt gradually reduced also. (3) Both restoration years and degradation degree didnt influence the nutrient distribution in soil. (4) The organic matter, total N and K of degraded grassland were increased by artificial grassland construction. Therefore, artificial grassland construction canbe used as an effective measure of ecological projects in the Three-river headwater area.

Bentonite supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (B-nZVI) was synthesized by the sodium borohydride reduction method, characterized with SEM, and used for aqueous Cr(VI) removal. Bentonite decreased nano-Fe 0 aggregation and thus increase Cr(VI) removal efficiency. At 35 °C and 250 r min −1 , 99% Cr(VI) removal was achieved from aqueous solution containing 50 mg L −1 of Cr(VI) by B-nZVI, while only 66% removal was achieved with unsupported nZVI after an experimental duration of 3 h when the Fe 0 loadings were 1.5 g L −1 . XRD indicated the existence of iron oxide and iron-chromium hydroxide coprecipitation on the surface of B-nZVI after exposure to an aqueous solution of Cr(VI). Kinetics studies under a series of different conditions showed that reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) could be expressed by pseudo first-order reaction kinetics, with initial Cr(VI) and B-nZVI concentrations, pH and temperature as variables. The apparent activation energy of Cr(VI) remediation by B-nZVI was 21 kJ mol −1 , which was characteristic of a chemically controlled reaction. These results demonstrated that B-nZVI could potentially be used as a new material for use in situ remediation.

Elymus nutans Griseb. is a typical important plant species in the alpine meadow of Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. To examine the effects of temperature elevation on its physiological and chemical characteristics, a simulation study was conducted in situ with open-top chambers (OTC) followed the method of International Tundra Experiment (ITEX) from November 2002 to September 2007, and these OTCs were designed five kinds of size with bottom diameters of 0.85, 1.15, 1.45, 1.75, 2.05 m so as to rise different air temperatures. The air temperature inside OTCs increased by 2.68, 1.57, 1.20, 1.07 and 0.69 °C with increase of OTC diameter compared with ambient air. We found that with increase of air temperature, the soluble sugar content and SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity in leaves of E. nutans increased first, and then decreased, whereas, the soluble protein content and GSH (Glutathione) content decreased first and increased then, the chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll contents were decreased, but the contents of chlorophyll b were higher than that of control. Increased temperature enhanced the above-ground biomass and blade height of E. nutans. These results indicated that elevated temperature had significant and complicated effects on physiological–biochemical characteristics of E. nutans on Qinghai-Tibet plateau, when the temperature increased within the range of 0.69–1.57 °C, it may have positive effects on plant growth and development, and E. nutans could adapt even develop defensive strategy to the changes of a certain ecological environment changes.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNET) are uncommon pancreatic neoplasms, accounting for 1-2% of all pancreatic tumors. However, they have a better prognosis and long-term survival compared to exocrine pancreatic cancer. PNETs can be divided into functional or non-functional based upon whether or not they excrete active substances relevant to specific clinical syndromes. Skeletal muscle metastasis is also a rare condition and differentiation between a primary soft tissue sarcoma and metastatic carcinoma is difficult without biopsy. Thus, skeletal muscle metastases from pancreatic neoplasms are exceedingly rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We present a 34-year-old man with metastatic pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma that was initially thought to be a primary soft tissue tumor. Pathology and immunohistochemistry demonstrated the tumor to be a metastasis from a pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinoma. A brief review of the literature on this subject is also presented.

The aim of this research was to determine the chemical composition of the essential oils of Dahlia pinnata, their insecticidal activity against Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilusoryzae and to isolate insecticidal constituents. Based on bioactivity-guided fractionation, active constituents were isolated and identified as D-limonene, 4-terpineol and α-terpineol. Essential oils and active compounds tested exhibited contact toxicity, with LD50 values ranging from 132.48 to 828.79 μg/cm(2) against S. zeamais and S. oryzae. Essential oils possessed fumigant toxicity against S. zeamais and S. oryzae with LC50 from 14.10 to 73.46 mg/L. d-Limonene (LC50 = 4.55 and 7.92 mg/L) showed stronger fumigant toxicity against target insects. 4-Terpineol (88 ± 8%) and d-limonene (87 ± 5%) showed the strongest repellency against S. zeamais and S. oryzae, respectively. The results indicate that essential oils and insecticidal constituents have potential for development into natural fumigants, insecticides or repellents for control of the stored-product insect pests.

Kaolinite supported bimetallic Fe/Ni nanoparticles (K-Fe/Ni) demonstrated capacity for simultaneous removal of both cationic and anionic contaminants such as Pb (II) and NO3(-). The dispersion of Fe/Ni nanoparticles was improved when kaolinite was used as a stabilizer, and also enhanced the reactivity of K-Fe/Ni. The adsorption of Pb (II) onto the kaolinite and the consequent simultaneous catalytic reduction of Pb (II) and NO3(-) kaolinite were confirmed by SEM, BET, EDS, XRD and batch adsorption-reduction test. Orthogonal method showed that initial concentrations of Pb (II) and NO3(-), as well the dosage of K-Fe/Ni showed the most significant impact on the removal rates, where 86.3% of Pb (II) and 73.6% of NO3(-) was removed at optimized conditions. In addition, K-Fe/Ni could be stored for 15 days in dry air without losing reactivity. Reusability test of K-Fe/Ni indicated that the removal efficiency decreased by 12.5% for Pb (II) and 27.2% for NO3(-) after using 3 times successively. Two electroplating wastewater samples were tested and showed K-Fe/Ni could remove more than 96% of Pb (II) and NO3(-) under the optimized conditions.

Clays such as kaolin, bentonite and zeolite were evaluated as support material for nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) to simultaneously remove Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) from aqueous solution. Of the three supported nZVIs, bentonite-supported nZVI (B-nZVI) was most effective in the simultaneous removal of Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) from a aqueous solution containing a 100 mg/l of Cu(2+) and Zn(2+), where 92.9 % Cu(2+) and 58.3 % Zn(2+) were removed. Scanning electronic microscope (SEM) revealed that the aggregation of nZVI decreased as the proportion of bentonite increased due to the good dispersion of nZVI, while energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) demonstrated the deposition of copper and zinc on B-nZVI after B-nZVI reacted with Cu(2+) and Zn(2+). A kinetics study indicated that removing Cu(2+) and Zn(2+) with B-nZVI accorded with the pseudo first-order model. These suggest that simultaneous adsorption of Cu(2+)and Zn(2+) on bentonite and the degradation of Cu(2+)and Zn(2+) by nZVI on the bentonite. However, Cu(2+) removal by B-nZVI was reduced rather than adsorption, while Zn(2+) removal was main adsorption. Finally, Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+) and total Cr from various wastewaters were removed by B-nZVI, and reusability of B-nZVI with different treatment was tested, which demonstrates that B-nZVI is a potential material for the removal of heavy metals from wastewaters.

Bentonite-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (B-nZVI) was synthesized using liquid-phase reduction. The orthogonal method was used to evaluate the factors impacting Cr(VI) removal and this showed that the initial concentration of Cr(VI), pH, temperature, and B-nZVI loading were all importance factors. Characterization with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) validated the hypothesis that the presence of bentonite led to a decrease in aggregation of iron nanoparticles and a corresponding increase in the specific surface area (SSA) of the iron particles. B-nZVI with a 50% bentonite mass fraction had a SSA of 39.94 m(2)/g, while the SSA of nZVI and bentonite was 54.04 and 6.03 m(2)/g, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the existence of Fe(0) before the reaction and the presence of Fe(II), Fe(III) and Cr(III) after the reaction. Batch experiments revealed that the removal of Cr (VI) using B-nZVI was consistent with pseudo first-order reaction kinetics. Finally, B-nZVI was used to remediate electroplating wastewater with removal efficiencies for Cr, Pb and Cu > 90%. Reuse of B-nZVI after washing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution was possible but the capacity of B-nZVI for Cr(VI) removal decreased by approximately 70%.
