1. Micro/nano topological modification of TiO2 nanotubes activates Thy-1 signaling to control osteogenic differentiation of stem cells

Abstract

Micro/nano topological modification is critical for improving the in vivo behaviors of bone implants, regulating multiple cellular functions. Titania (TiO2) nanotubes show the capacity of promoting osteoblast-related cell differentiation and induce effective osseointegration, serving as a model material for studying the effects of micro/nano-topological modifications on cells. However, the intracellular signaling pathways by which TiO2 nanotubes regulate the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells are not fully defined. Thy-1 (CD90), a cell surface glycoprotein anchored by glycosylphosphatidylinositol, has been considered a key molecule in osteoblast differentiation in recent years. Nevertheless, whether the micro/nano topology of the implant surface leads to changes in Thy-1 is unknown, as well as whether these changes promote osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Here, TiO2 nanotubes of various diameters were prepared by adjusting the anodizing voltage. qPCR and immunoblot were carried out to assess the mechanism by which TiO2 nanotubes regulate Thy-1. The results revealed Ti plates harboring TiO2 nanotubes ∼100-nm diameter (TNT-100) markedly upregulated Thy-1. Subsequently, upregulated Thy-1 promoted the activation of Fyn/RhoA/MLC Ⅱ/F-actin axis, which enhanced the nuclear translocation of YAP. After Thy-1 knockdown by siRNA, the Fyn/RhoA/MLC Ⅱ/F-actin axis was significantly inhibited and TiO2 nanotubes showed decreased effects on osteogenic differentiation. Therefore, Thy-1 upregulation might be a major mechanism by which micro/nano-topological modification of TiO2 nanotubes promotes osteogenic differentiation in BMSCs. This study provides novel insights into the molecular mechanism of TiO2 nanotubes, which may help design improved bone implants for clinical application.

2. Simpler Gradient Methods for Blind Super-Resolution with Lower Iteration Complexity

Abstract

We study the problem of blind super-resolution, which can be formulated as a low-rank matrix recovery problem via vectorized Hankel lift (VHL). The previous gradient descent method based on VHL named PGD-VHL relies on additional regularization such as the projection and balancing penalty, exhibiting a suboptimal iteration complexity. In this paper, we propose a simpler unconstrained optimization problem without the above two types of regularization and develop two new and provable gradient methods named VGD-VHL and ScalGD-VHL. A novel and sharp analysis is provided for the theoretical guarantees of our algorithms, which demonstrates that our methods offer lower iteration complexity than PGD-VHL. In addition, ScalGD-VHL has the lowest iteration complexity while being independent of the condition number. Furthermore, our novel analysis reveals that the blind super-resolution problem is less incoherence-demanding, thereby eliminating the necessity for incoherent projections to achieve linear convergence. 4. Projected Gradient Descent for Spectral Compressed Sensing via Symmetric Hankel Factorization

Abstract

Current spectral compressed sensing methods via Hankel matrix completion employ symmetric factorization to demonstrate the low-rank property of the Hankel matrix. However, previous non-convex gradient methods only utilize asymmetric factorization to achieve spectral compressed sensing. In this paper, we propose a novel nonconvex projected gradient descent method for spectral compressed sensing via symmetric factorization named Symmetric Hankel Projected Gradient Descent (SHGD), which updates only one matrix and avoids a balancing regularization term. SHGD reduces about half of the computation and storage costs compared to the prior gradient method based on asymmetric factorization. {Besides, the symmetric factorization employed in our work is completely novel to the prior low-rank factorization model, introducing a new factorization ambiguity under complex orthogonal transformation}. Novel distance metrics are designed for our factorization method and a linear convergence guarantee to the desired signal is established with $O(r^2\log(n))$ observations. Abstract

This paper studies the formation tracking problem of the so-called open multiagent systems. In these systems, agents can freely join or leave at any time, i.e. the system sizes are changeable. To achieve formation tracking control in these systems, we propose a general theoretical analysis framework that consists of a formation adjustment strategy and a formation tracking protocol. Therein, the former is used to adjust the predefined task-oriented formation shape to the varying size of the system. This strategy is built on the existing scalable self-healing idea and then modified by a size estimation method. The latter is used to drive the present followers to form the adjusted formation and track a leader. To accommodate undirected and directed graphs, two distributed formation tracking protocols are designed respectively. Due to possible agent migration, the designed tracking protocols are endowed with self-adaptive ability, i.e. without depending on global topology information. Then, their convergence properties are analysed using the Lyapunov theory. Finally, two simulations are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
