Therefore, eradication of this cell population is a primary objective in hepatocellular cancer therapy. We prepared a nanodrug delivery system with activated carbon nanoparticles (ACNP) as carriers and metformin (MET) as drug (ACNP-MET), which was able to selectively eliminate hepatocellular CSCs and thereby increase the effects of MET on hepatocellular cancers.Methods: ACNP were prepared by ball milling and deposition in distilled water. Suspension of ACNP and MET was mixed and the best ratio of ACNP and MET was determined based on the isothermal adsorption formula. Hepatocellular CSCs were identified as CD133+ cells and cultured in serum-free medium. We investigated the effects of ACNP-MET on hepatocellular CSCs, including the inhibitory effects, the targeting efficiency, self-renewal capacity, and the sphere-forming capacity of hepatocellular CSCs. Next, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of ACNP-MET by using in vivo relapsed tumor models of hepatocellular CSCs.Results: The ACNP have a similar size, a regular spherical shape and a smooth surface. The optimal ratio for adsorption was MET: ACNP=1:4. ACNP-MET could target and inhibit the proliferation of CD133+ population and decrease mammosphere formation and renewal of CD133+ population in vitro and in vivo.Conclusion: These results not only suggest that nanodrug delivery system increased the effects of MET, but also shed light on the mechanisms of the therapeutic effects of MET and ACNP-MET on hepatocellular cancers. An automatic blood cell analyzer was adopted to detect the neutrophil count (NC), lymphocyte count (LC), and number of platelets (PLT) in the whole blood of the subjects in both groups, and the NLR and PLR were calculated. Electrocardiography was conducted on the subjects in both groups to detect whether any abnormality existed in the ST segment. The receiver operating curve (ROC) was used to evaluate the diagnostic value of each indicator of CSX, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was adopted for the analysis of the influencing factors.Results: No significant differences existed in age, gender, smoking history, or family history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and tumors between the two groups (p > 0.05). When compared with the control group, the NC, PLT, NLR, PLR, and rate of abnormality of the ST segment on the electrocardiogram were significantly higher, and the LC was significantly lower in the CSX group (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the ST-segment abnormality (3.95 [2.10∼ 7.41]; NLR > 2.21, 3.46 [1.87∼ 6.39]; and PLR > 119.77, 3.66 [1.99∼ 6.73]) was a correlated risk factor for the occurrence of CSX (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Both the NLR and PLR in patients with CSX were significantly elevated, and both have a certain predictive value for the occurrence of CSX and are expected to be effective biomarkers for CSX.Keywords: cardiac syndrome X, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, correlation analysis, inflammation

A VI of 4.0 was set as the cutoff value to degrade BI-RADS classification. We calculated the accuracy, sensitivity and PPV of a BI-RADS diagnosis alone and the combination of BI-RADS and the VI.Results: Pathologically, of the 222 lesions, 129 were confirmed to be benign, and 93 were found to be malignant. A VI of 4.0 was set as the cutoff value; when the VI≤ 4.0, those BI-RADS 4 masses were downgraded one level (4C-4B, 4B-4A, 4A-3) to an integral BI-RADS grade, while the others maintained the conventional grade. A total of 54 BI-RADS 4 lesions were degraded to BI-RADS 3, including 53 benign lesions and 1 malignant lesion. The diagnostic accuracy (65.3% vs 41.9%) and PPV (54.8% vs 41.9%) were significantly improved. The sensitivity decreased slightly (98.9% vs 100%) because 1 of the 54 downgraded BI-RADS 4 lesions, which had a pathological type of invasive ductal carcinoma, was incorrectly downgraded.Conclusion: SMI is a noninvasive tool for visualizing the vascular structure with high-resolution microvascular images. As a quantitative index, the VI can be used to appropriately downgrade benign lesions classified as BI-RADS 4, which can improve the diagnostic accuracy and PPV and reduce unnecessary biopsies.Keywords: superb microvascular imaging, breast neoplasms, ultrasonography, diagnostic imaging

Alkaloids are the main active ingredients of C. chinensis. Purpose: This study was designed to probe the effects and possible mechanisms of the total alkaloids from C. chinensis (TAC) on cognitive deficits in type 2 diabetic rats. Methods: Cognitive deficits were induced in rats by streptozotocin and high glucose/high fat diet. After treatment with TAC (80, 120, and 180 mg/kg) for 24 weeks, the behavioral parameters of each rat were assessed by Morris water maze and Y-maze tests. The indexes of glucose and lipid metabolism, pathological changes of brain tissue, and the phosphorylation levels of insulin signaling related proteins were also evaluated. Results: The type 2 diabetic rats showed significantly elevated levels of fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and glycosylated serum protein, as well as apolipoprotein B, free fatty acid, triglyceride and total cholesterol but decreased the content of apolipoprotein A1, and TAC treatment dose-dependently reversed these abnormal changes. Furthermore, the behavioral results showed that TAC alleviated the cognitive deficits in type 2 diabetic rats. Moreover, immunohistochemical and histopathologic examinations indicated that the diabetic rats showed significant Aβ deposition, and neuronal damage and loss, which can be reversed by TAC treatment. The western blot results showed that TAC treatment markedly increased the phosphorylation of IRS, PI3K, and Akt, and inhibited the overactivation of GSK3β in the brain of type 2 diabetic rats. Conclusion: These findings conclude that TAC prevents diabetic cognitive deficits, most likely by ameliorating the disorder of glucose and lipid metabolism, attenuating Aβ deposition, and enhancing insulin signaling. Many survivors have unmet needs after discharge from hospital. Electronic communication technology to support post-discharge care has not been used for patients with stroke. In this paper, we describe the development of a novel electronic messaging system designed for survivors of stroke to support their goals of recovery and secondary prevention after hospital discharge. Participants and methods: This was a formative evaluation study. The design was informed by a literature search, existing data from survivors of stroke, and behavior change theories. We established two working groups; one for developing the electronic infrastructure and the other (comprising researchers, clinical experts and consumer representatives) for establishing the patient-centered program. Following agreement on the categories for the goal-setting menu, we drafted relevant messages to support and educate patients. These messages were then independently reviewed by multiple topic experts. Concurrently, we established an online database to capture participant characteristics and then integrated this database with a purpose-built messaging system. We conducted alpha testing of the approach using the first 60 messages. Results: The initial goal-setting menu comprised 26 subcategories. Following expert review, another 8 goal subcategories were added to the secondary prevention category: managing cholesterol; smoking; physical activity; alcohol consumption; weight management; medication management; access to health professionals, and self-care. Initially, 455 health messages were created by members of working group 2. Following refinement and mapping to different goals by the project team, 980 health messages across the health goals and 69 general motivational messages were formulated. Seventeen independent reviewers assessed the messages and suggested adding 73 messages and removing 16 (2%). Overall, 1,233 messages (18 administrative, 69 general motivation and 1,146 health-related) were created. Conclusion: This novel electronic self-management support system is ready to be pilot tested in a randomized controlled trial in patients with stroke. 7. How shear increments affect the flow production branching ratio in CSDX

Abstract

The coupling of turbulence-driven azimuthal and axial flows in a linear device absent magnetic shear (Controlled Shear Decorrelation Experiment) is investigated. In particular, we examine the apportionment of Reynolds power between azimuthal and axial flows, and how the azimuthal flow shear affects axial flow generation and saturation by drift wave turbulence. We study the response of the energy branching ratio, i.e., ratio of axial and azimuthal Reynolds powers, PzR/PyR, to incremental changes of azimuthal and axial flow shears. We show that increasing azimuthal flow shear decreases the energy branching ratio. When axial flow shear increases, this ratio first increases but then decreases to zero. The axial flow shear saturates below the threshold for parallel shear flow instability. The effects of azimuthal flow shear on the generation and saturation of intrinsic axial flows are analyzed. Azimuthal flow shear slows down the modulational growth of the seed axial flow shear, and thus reduces intrinsic axial flow production. Azimuthal flow shear reduces both the residual Reynolds stress (of axial flow, i.e., ΠxzRes) and turbulent viscosity (χzDW) by the same factor |⟨vy⟩′|−2Δx−2Ln−2ρs2cs2, where Δx is the distance relative to the reference point where ⟨vy⟩=0 in the plasma frame. Therefore, the stationary state axial flow shear is not affected by azimuthal flow shear to leading order since ⟨vz⟩′∼ΠxzRes/χzDW.

8. Tracing the Pathway from Drift-Wave Turbulence with Broken Symmetry to the Production of Sheared Axial Mean Flow

Abstract

This study traces the emergence of sheared axial flow from collisional drift-wave turbulence with broken symmetry in a linear plasma device-the controlled shear decorrelation experiment. As the density profile steepens, the axial Reynolds stress develops and drives a radially sheared axial flow that is parallel to the magnetic field. Results show that the nondiffusive piece of the Reynolds stress is driven by the density gradient, results from spectral asymmetry of the turbulence, and, thus, is dynamical in origin. Taken together, these findings constitute the first simultaneous demonstration of the causal link between the density gradient, turbulence, and stress with broken spectral symmetry and the mean axial flow.

9. Generation of parasitic axial flow by drift wave turbulence with broken symmetry: Theory and experiment

Abstract

Detailed measurements of intrinsic axial flow generation parallel to the magnetic field in the controlled shear decorrelation experiment linear plasma device with no axial momentum input are presented and compared to theory. The results show a causal link from the density gradient to drift-wave turbulence with broken spectral symmetry and development of the axial mean parallel flow. As the density gradient steepens, the axial and azimuthal Reynolds stresses increase and radially sheared azimuthal and axial mean flows develop. A turbulent axial momentum balance analysis shows that the axial Reynolds stress drives the radially sheared axial mean flow. The turbulent drive (Reynolds power) for the azimuthal flow is an order of magnitude greater than that for axial flow, suggesting that the turbulence fluctuation levels are set by azimuthal flow shear regulation. The direct energy exchange between axial and azimuthal mean flows is shown to be insignificant. Therefore, the axial flow is parasitic to the turbulence-zonal flow system and is driven primarily by the axial turbulent stress generated by that system. The non-diffusive, residual part of the axial Reynolds stress is found to be proportional to the density gradient and is formed due to dynamical asymmetry in the drift-wave turbulence.

10. Another look at zonal flows: Resonance, shearing, and frictionless saturation

Abstract

We show that shear is not the exclusive parameter that represents all aspects of flow structure effects on turbulence. Rather, wave-flow resonance enters turbulence regulation, both linearly and nonlinearly. Resonance suppresses the linear instability by wave absorption. Flow shear can weaken the resonance, and thus destabilize drift waves, in contrast to the near-universal conventional shear suppression paradigm. Furthermore, consideration of wave-flow resonance resolves the long-standing problem of how zonal flows (ZFs) saturate in the limit of weak or zero frictional drag, and also determines the ZF scale. We show that resonant vorticity mixing, which conserves potential enstrophy, enables ZF saturation in the absence of drag, and so is effective at regulating the Dimits up-shift regime. Vorticity mixing is incorporated as a nonlinear, self-regulation effect in an extended 0D predator-prey model of drift-ZF turbulence. This analysis determines the saturated ZF shear and shows that the mesoscopic ZF width scales as LZF∼f3/16(1−f)1/8ρs5/8l03/8 in the (relevant) adiabatic limit (i.e., τckk‖2D‖≫1). f is the fraction of turbulence energy coupled to ZF and l0 is the base state mixing length, absent ZF shears. We calculate and compare the stationary flow and turbulence level in frictionless, weakly frictional, and strongly frictional regimes. In the frictionless limit, the results differ significantly from conventionally quoted scalings derived for frictional regimes. To leading order, the flow is independent of turbulence intensity. 11. Negative viscosity from negative compressibility and axial flow shear stiffness in a straight magnetic field

Abstract

Negative compressibility ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence in a linear plasma device controlled shear de-correlation experiment can induce a negative viscosity increment. However, even with this negative increment, we show that the total axial viscosity remains positive definite, i.e., no intrinsic axial flow can be generated by pure ITG turbulence in a straight magnetic field. This differs from the case of electron drift wave turbulence, where the total viscosity can turn negative, at least transiently. When the flow gradient is steepened by any drive mechanism, so that the parallel shear flow instability (PSFI) exceeds the ITG drive, the flow profile saturates at a level close to the value above which PSFI becomes dominant. This saturated flow gradient exceeds the PSFI linear threshold, and grows with ∇Ti0 as |∇V∥|/|k∥cs|∼|∇Ti0|2/3/(k∥Ti0)2/3. This scaling trend characterizes the effective stiffness of the parallel flow gradient.

Abstract

A simple model for the generation and amplification of intrinsic axial flow in a linear device, controlled shear decorrelation experiment, is proposed. This model proposes and builds upon a novel dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism, using a simple theory of drift wave turbulence in the presence of axial flow shear. This mechanism does not require complex magnetic field structure, such as shear, and thus is also applicable to intrinsic rotation generation in tokamaks at weak or zero magnetic shear, as well as to linear devices. This mechanism is essentially the self-amplification of the mean axial flow profile, i.e., a modulational instability. Hence, the flow development is a form of negative viscosity phenomenon. Unlike conventional mechanisms where the residual stress produces an intrinsic torque, in this dynamical symmetry breaking scheme, the residual stress induces a negative increment to the ambient turbulent viscosity. The axial flow shear is then amplified by this negative viscosity increment. The resulting mean axial flow profile is calculated and discussed by analogy with the problem of turbulent pipe flow. For tokamaks, the negative viscosity is not needed to generate intrinsic rotation. However, toroidal rotation profile gradient is enhanced by the negative increment in turbulent viscosity.

Abstract

The branching fraction of the ψ(2S) decay into τ+τ - has been measured for the first time using the BES detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider. The result is Bττ=(2.710. 43±0.55)× 10-3, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This value, along with those for the branching fractions into e+e- and μ+ μ- of this resonance, satisfy well the relation predicted by the sequential lepton hypothesis. Combining all these values with the leptonic width of the resonance, the total width of the ψ(25) is determined to be (252±37) keV. ©2002 The American Physical Society.

16. MIP Formulations of Piece-wise Polyhedral Relaxations of AC Power Flow Equations

Abstract

In recent years, piece-wise convex relaxations of power flow equations have attracted substantial academic interest. These approaches build such relaxations by partitioning the variables' domain. However, the ensued formulations grow very rapidly in size with the number of partitions, thus becoming computationally intractable to achieve strong dual bounds for realistic-size instances. In this work, we propose piece-wise polyhedral relaxations of power flow equations utilizing the latest advancements in mixed-integer programming (MIP) modeling techniques. A computational campaign conducted on 24 PGLib benchmark instances of the OPF problem shows that the choice of MIP formulation on piece-wise polyhedral relaxation of power flow equations significantly impacts the computational time.

Abstract

The first measurement of (Formula presented) and an upper limit for (Formula presented) are determined from 22.3 (Formula presented) of (Formula presented) annihilation data at a c.m. energy of 4.03 GeV. The data were recorded by the Beijing Spectrometer (BES) at BEPC. A recoil charge method is applied to charm threshold data to determine the charge of the D meson in the recoil from (Formula presented) reconstructed (Formula presented) (Formula presented) mesons. The branching fractions (Formula presented) and (Formula presented) are determined from 10 events with a reconstructed D and a recoiling (Formula presented) In addition, a 90% C.L. upper limit of (Formula presented) is determined from a search for semileptonic decays of the (Formula presented) © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Using a sample of 3.8 M (Formula presented) events accumulated with the BES detector, the process (Formula presented) is studied. The angular distributions are compared with the general decay amplitude analysis of Cahn. We find that the dipion system requires some D wave amplitude, as well as S wave. On the other hand, the (Formula presented) relative angular momentum is consistent with being pure S wave. The decay distributions have been fit to heavy quarkonium models, including the Novikov-Shifman model. This model, which is written in terms of the parameter (Formula presented) predicts that D wave pions should be present. We determine (Formula presented) based on the joint (Formula presented) distribution. The fraction of D wave amplitude as a function of (Formula presented) is found to decrease with increasing (Formula presented) in agreement with the model. We have also fit the Mannel-Yan model, which is another model that allows D wave pions. © 2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The cross section for charmed meson production at √s=4.03 and 4.14 GeV has been measured with the Beijing Spectrometer. The measurement was made using 22.3 pb-1 of e+e- data collected at 4.03 GeV and 1.5 pb-1 of e+e- data collected at 4.14 GeV. Inclusive observed cross sections for the production of charged and neutral D mesons and momentum spectra are presented. Observed cross sections were radiatively corrected to obtain tree level cross sections. Measurements of the total hadronic cross section are obtained from the charmed meson cross section and an extrapolation of results from below the charm threshold. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Hadronic decays of the P-wave spin-triplet charmonium states (Formula presented) are studied using a sample of (Formula presented) decays collected by the BES detector operating at the BEPC storage ring. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The risk of fatal cardiovascular events is increased in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A major contributor to poor prognosis is impaired nitric oxide (NO•) signalling at the level of tissue responsiveness, termed NO• resistance. This study aimed to determine if T2DM promotes NO• resistance in the heart and vasculature and whether tissue responsiveness to nitroxyl (HNO) is affected. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: At 8 weeks of age, male Sprague-Dawley rats commenced a high-fat diet. After 2 weeks, the rats received low-dose streptozotocin (two intraperitoneal injections, 35 mg·kg-1 , over two consecutive days) and continued on the same diet. Twelve weeks later, isolated hearts were Langendorff-perfused to assess responses to the NO• donor diethylamine NONOate (DEA/NO) and the HNO donor Angeli's salt. Isolated mesenteric arteries were utilised to measure vascular responsiveness to the NO• donors sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and DEA/NO, and the HNO donor Angeli's salt. KEY RESULTS: Inotropic, lusitropic and coronary vasodilator responses to DEA/NO were impaired in T2DM hearts, whereas responses to Angeli's salt were preserved or enhanced. Vasorelaxation to Angeli's salt was augmented in T2DM mesenteric arteries, which were hyporesponsive to the relaxant effects of SNP and DEA/NO. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: This is the first evidence that inotropic and lusitropic responses are preserved, and NO• resistance in the coronary and mesenteric vasculature is circumvented, by the HNO donor Angeli's salt in T2DM. These findings highlight the cardiovascular therapeutic potential of HNO donors, especially in emergencies such as acute ischaemia or heart failure.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Despite digital health tools being popular for supporting self-management of chronic diseases, little research has been undertaken on stroke. We developed and pilot tested, using a randomized controlled design, a multicomponent digital health programme, known as Inspiring Virtual Enabled Resources following Vascular Events (iVERVE), to improve self-management after stroke. The 4-week trial incorporated facilitated person-centred goal setting, with those in the intervention group receiving electronic messages aligned to their goals, versus limited administrative messages for the control group. In this paper, we describe the participant experience of the various components involved with the iVERVE trial. METHODS: Mixed method design: satisfaction surveys (control and intervention) and a focus group interview (purposively selected intervention participants). Experiences relating to goal setting and overall trial satisfaction were obtained from intervention and control participants, with feedback on the electronic message component from intervention participants. Inductive thematic analysis was used for interview data and open-text responses, and closed questions were summarized descriptively. Triangulation of data allowed participants' perceptions to be explored in depth. RESULTS: Overall, 27/54 trial participants completed the survey (13 intervention: 52%; 14 control: 48%); and 5/8 invited participants in the intervention group attended the focus group. Goal setting: The approach was considered comprehensive, with the involvement of health professionals in the process helpful in developing realistic, meaningful and person-centred goals. Electronic messages (intervention): Messages were perceived as easy to understand (92%), and the frequency of receipt was considered appropriate (11/13 survey; 4/5 focus group). Abstract

Background: Electronic communication is used in various populations to achieve health goals, but evidence in stroke is lacking. We pilot tested the feasibility and potential effectiveness of a novel personalised electronic self-management intervention to support person-centred goal attainment and secondary prevention after stroke. Methods: A phase I, prospective, randomised controlled pilot trial (1:1 allocation) with assessor blinding, intention-to-treat analysis, and a process evaluation. Community-based survivors of stroke were recruited from participants in the Australian Stroke Clinical Registry (AuSCR) who had indicated their willingness to be contacted for research studies. Inclusion criteria include 1–2 years following hospital admission for stroke and living within 50 km of Monash University (Melbourne). Person-centred goals were set with facilitation by a clinician using a standardised template. The intervention group received electronic support messages aligned to their goals over 4 weeks. The control group received only 2–3 electronic administrative messages. Primary outcomes were study retention, goal attainment (assessed using Goal Attainment Scaling method) and satisfaction. Secondary outcomes were self-management (Health Education Impact Questionnaire: 8 domains), quality of life, mood and acceptability. Results: Of 340 invitations sent from AuSCR, 73 responded, 68 were eligible and 57 (84%) completed the baseline assessment. At the goal-setting stage, 54/68 (79%) were randomised (median 16 months after stroke): 25 to intervention (median age 69 years; 40% female) and 29 to control (median age 68 years; 38% female). Forty-five (83%) participants completed the outcome follow-up assessment. At follow-up, goal attainment (mean GAS-T score ≥ 50) in the intervention group was achieved for goals related to function, participation and environment (control: environment only). RASA1 and SPRED1 are two important negative regulators of this pathway, but the exact regulating mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential regulating mechanisms involved in the Ras–MEK–ERK signaling pathway in OSCC. Materials and methods: MicroRNA (miRNA) expression was detected by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. The protein levels of RASA1, SPRED1, and signaling proteins were detected by Western blot. Cell growth was determined using CCK-8 reagent, colony formation was stained by crystal violet, and cell invasion was tested using transwell chambers. Cell apoptosis and the cell cycle were then analyzed by flow cytometry. The binding of miR182 with RASA1 or SPRED1 was evaluated by luciferase reporter assays on a dual-luciferase reporter system. Results: The expression of miR182 was found to be upregulated significantly in malignant oral carcinoma tissues compared with the adjacent nonmalignant tissues, and was inversely correlated with protein levels of RASA1 and SPRED1. Overexpression of miR182 in OSCC cell lines sustained Ras–MEK–ERK signaling-pathway activation, and promoted cell proliferation, cell-cycle progression, colony formation, and invasion capacity, whereas miR182 downregulation alleviated these properties significantly in vitro. Furthermore, we demonstrated that miR182 exerted its oncogenic role in OSCC by directly targeting and suppressing RASA1 and SPRED1. Conclusion: Our results bring new insights into the important role of miR182 in the activation of the Ras–MEK–ERK signaling pathway, and suggest that miR182 may be used as a potential target for treatment of OSCC, prompting further investigation into miRNA antisense oligonucleotides for cancer therapy. 28. Epidemiological characteristics of domestic fuel use in adults in 10 regions of China

Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics of cooking and heating fuel use in participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) study. Methods: The CKB study recruited 512 891 adults from 10 areas in China during 2004-2008. Information on cooking fuel and heating fuel was collected using a questionnaire in baseline survey. The proportions of various fuels used in different areas, in different populations, and at different time points were calculated and compared. Results: Overall, 52.1% participants used solid fuel for cooking or heating. Rural areas had higher prevalence of solid fuel use than urban areas. The percentage of participants using solid fuel for cooking was 36.1% (coal 20.1%, wood/charcoal 16.0%); The percentage of participants using solid fuel for heating was 36.7% (coal 22.7%, wood/charcoal 14.0%). The prevalence of solid fuel use and the fuel type mainly used varied widely across 10 areas. The proportion of clean fuel use was lower in less-educated and lower-income people. Household coal and wood/charcoal use showed a declining trend, which was more remarkable in urban areas. Conclusion: There are still a large number of rural residents and people with low income relying on solid fuel in China, which is a serious public health concern.

Abstract

Testicular phagocytosis by Sertoli cells (SCs) plays an essential role in the efficient clearance of apoptotic spermatogenic cells under both physiological and pathological conditions. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this unique process is poorly understood. Herein, we report for the first time that α-taxilin protein (TXLNA), a binding partner of the syntaxin family that functions as a central player in the intracellular vesicle traffic, was dominantly expressed in SCs. Induction of apoptosis in murine meiotic spermatocytes and haploid spermatids by busulfan treatment stimulated a significant increase of TXLNA in SCs at day (d) 14 and d 24 after busulfan treatment, respectively. Consistently, TXLNA expression was steadily upregulated when SCs were co-cultured with apoptotic germ cells (GCs). Moreover, using siRNA treatment, we found that ablation of endogenous TXLNA significantly impaired the phagocytotic capacity of SCs and thereby resulted in defective spermiogenesis and reduced fertility during the late recovery after testicular heat stress. Mechanistically, upregulation of TXLNA expression by apoptotic GCs was associated with the stabilization of ATP-binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCA1), a transporter-mediated lipid efflux from SCs and influencing male fertility. TXLNA acted as an upstream suppressor of ABCA1 ubiquitination and thus promoted ABCA1 stability and accumulation following GC apoptosis. We further provide in vitro evidence that epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mediated phosphorylation regulated ABCA1 ubiquitination and was enhanced by TXLNA deficiency during testicular phagocytosis. Taken together, the TXLNA/ABCA1 cascade may serve as an important feedback mechanism to modulate the magnitude of subsequent phagocytotic process of SCs in response to testicular injury.

PURPOSE: Worldwide, stroke is a leading cause of disease burden. Many survivors have unmet needs after discharge from hospital. Electronic communication technology to support post-discharge care has not been used for patients with stroke. In this paper, we describe the development of a novel electronic messaging system designed for survivors of stroke to support their goals of recovery and secondary prevention after hospital discharge. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This was a formative evaluation study. The design was informed by a literature search, existing data from survivors of stroke, and behavior change theories. We established two working groups; one for developing the electronic infrastructure and the other (comprising researchers, clinical experts and consumer representatives) for establishing the patient-centered program. Following agreement on the categories for the goal-setting menu, we drafted relevant messages to support and educate patients. These messages were then independently reviewed by multiple topic experts. Concurrently, we established an online database to capture participant characteristics and then integrated this database with a purpose-built messaging system. We conducted alpha testing of the approach using the first 60 messages. RESULTS: The initial goal-setting menu comprised 26 subcategories. Following expert review, another 8 goal subcategories were added to the secondary prevention category: managing cholesterol; smoking; physical activity; alcohol consumption; weight management; medication management; access to health professionals, and self-care. Initially, 455 health messages were created by members of working group 2. Following refinement and mapping to different goals by the project team, 980 health messages across the health goals and 69 general motivational messages were formulated. 33. 中国成年人气流受限与主要慢性病发病风险的前瞻性关联分析 [Associations between airflow obstruction and the risks of morbidity on major chronic diseases in Chinese adults: a prospective cohort study]

Abstract

Objective: To examine the prospective associations between airflow obstruction (AFO) and risks of major chronic diseases morbidity in Chinese adults. Methods: Samples of this study were from the China Kadoorie Biobank. A total of 486 996 participants aged 30 to 79 years (mean 51.5 years) at the baseline study, were included after excluding those who self-reported of having heart disease, stroke and cancer at baseline. AFO was defined under the Global Initiative on Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criteria and forced expiratory volume per one second in percentage of the expected one (FEV(1)% P). Cox regression models were used to investigate the associations of AFO with incidence rates of ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and lung cancer after adjusted for potential confounders. Results: Over a period of 7 years through the follow-up program, the incident cases of ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and lung cancer appeared as 24 644, 36 336 and 3 218, respectively. Compared with people without AFO, the HR (95% CI) of GOLD-1 to GOLD-4 were 0.89 (0.78-1.01), 1.05 (0.98-1.12), 1.29 (1.18-1.40) and 1.65 (1.42-1.91) respectively for ischemic heart disease. The HR (95%CI) of GOLD-1 to GOLD-4 were 0.96 (0.70-1.26), 1.12 (0.96-1.31), 1.38 (1.14-1.65) and 1.48 (1.05-2.02) respectively for lung cancer. No statistically significant differences in the associations between GOLD level and cerebrovascular disease morbidity were found. However, each 10% decrease in FEV(1)% P was associated with 7.2% (95%CI: 6.4%-8.0%), 3.6% (95%CI: 3.0%-4.3%) and 10.5% (95%CI: 8.4%-12.6%) increased the risks of ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and lung cancer respectively. The results were persistant when stratified by smoking status. Conclusion: Higher degree of AFO seemed to be associated with the risks of ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease and lung cancer morbidity among the Chinese adults.

Abstract

Objective To examine the prospective associations between airflow obstruction (AFO) and total and cause-specific mortality. Methods The study is based on China Kadoorie Biobank, in which 199 099 men and 287 895 women aged 30 to 79 years at baseline were included after excluding participants with heart disease, stroke, and cancer at baseline. The Global Initiative on Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guideline was used to classify AFO. Cox regression models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results During 3 494 079 person-years of follow-up between 2004 and 2013 (median 7.2 years), a total of 21 649 people died. Absolute mortality rates were 5.5, 9.9, 13.1, 32.4 and 63.3 deaths per 1000 person-years for participants who have normal AFO, GOLD-1 to GOLD-4, respectively. After adjusting potential confounders, compared with participants with normal lung function, the HRs (95% CIs) for death were 0.98 (0.88～1.09), 1.03 (0.97～1.09), 1.62 (1.53～1.73), and 2.83 (2.59～3.10) for those whose AFO were classified as GOLD-1 to GOLD-4, respectively. The airflow obstruction was also associated with increased risk for deaths due to ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Conclusion The airflow obstruction was associated with total and certain cause-specific mortality, independent of other risk factors of death.

35. Study on High-Temperature Synthesis Ejecting Technique of ZnO Nanomaterials

Abstract

ZnO nanomaterials were prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis ejecting technique with Al, Cu2O, ZnO and SnO power reagents as raw materials. The structure and morphology were characterized by XRD, SEM and FTIR methods. The synthesis mechanism of ZnO nanomaterials was discussed. The results showed that single ZnO with hexagonal wurtzite structure was prepared by high-temperature combustion synthesis ejecting method. The products exhibited nanowire morphology, accompanied by granular and flaky morphologies. According to the analysis, the formation mechanism of ZnO nanomaterials is as follows: The reactant is heated to the molten liquid state by exothermic reaction of thermite powder, a self-ejecting system consisting of porous film with high melting point and low density, molten substances to be prepared and ejecting additives is formed by utilizing the difference of specific gravity and melting point between compounds. The substances to be prepared are ejected through the holes of the porous film by the gas released from the ejecting additives, and finally nanomaterials are obtained.

Abstract

WOS: 000389144400002, By analyzing 2.93 fb(-1) data collected at the center-of-mass energy root s = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the semileptonic decay D+ -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e) to be B(D (+) -> (K) over bar (0)e(+)nu(e)) = (8.59 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.21)% using (K) over bar (0) -> K-S(0) -> pi(0) pi(0), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Abstract

WOS: 000368783600015, By analyzing a data set of 2.92 fb(-1) of e(+) e(-) collision data taken at root s = 3.773 GeVand 106.41 x 10(6) psi(3686) decays taken at root s = 3.686 GeVwith the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fraction and the partial decay width for psi(3770)->gamma chi c0 to be B(psi(3770)->gamma chi c0) = (6.88 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.67) x 10(-3) and Gamma[psi(3770)->gamma chi c0] = (187 +/- 8 +/- 19) keV, respectively. Abstract

WOS: 000368783600087, We extract the e(+) e(-) -> pi(+) pi(-) cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb(-1) taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor vertical bar F pi vertical bar(2) as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g - 2)(mu). We find this value to be a(mu)(pi pi,LO) (600-900 MeV) = (368.2 +/- 2.5(stat)+/- 3.3(sys)).10(-10), which is between the corresponding values using the BaBar or KLOE data. (C) 2015 The Authors. 41. 3D buffer zone creation method of urban rail transit

In order to solve the problem that the existing GIS buffer algorithm can not create the 3D buffer zone of urban rail transit, octree was adopted as a fundamental data structure for creating the 3D buffer zone. The 3D solid information of urban rail transit was stored by using linear octree encoding, and the analysis of 3D buffer zone was transferred into the spatial analysis of octree nodes. The topology of octree nodes was analyzed, and a new algorithm, i.e. 0-1 swap algorithm, was proposed for linear octree neighborhood analysis. The boundary nodes of rail transit were identified by using the 0-1 swap algorithm, and the directions of boundary nodes were determined. The 3D buffer zone of rail transit was created by using boundary nodes. A new 3D buffer zone creation method of urban rail transit was formed based on linear octree. The boundary nodes of straight tunnel, curved tunnel, straight viaduct and curved viaduct were created by using the 0-1 swap algorithm, and the result was compared with that of conventional algorithm and classical Xiao's algorithm. The 3D buffer zones of double-arch tunnel, single-arch tunnel and viaduct were created by using the proposed method, and the number of octree nodes extracted from the different structures was counted and compared with the number of raster nodes of traditional structure. Analysis result indicates that compared with the conventional algorithm and the classical Xiao's algorithm, the elapsed times of boundary nodes creation for straight tunnel, curved tunnel, straight viaduct and curved viaduct are minimum by using the 0-1 swap algorithm, and the values are 5, 7, 10, 18 ms respectively. The time complexity reduces from second order to first order by using the 0-1 swap algorithm. Abstract

The presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood is associated with metastasis and prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. The epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) has a pivotal role in tumor invasion and dissemination. To identify more sensitive biomarkers for evaluating metastasis and prognosis, we investigated the expression of EMT markers, including vimentin, twist, ZEB1, ZEB2, snail, slug and E-cadherin in CTCs, primary HCC tumors and adjacent non-tumoral liver tissues. After isolating viable CTCs from the peripheral blood of HCC patients using asialoglycoprotein receptors (ASGPRs), the CTCs were identified with immunofluorescence staining. CTCs were detected in the peripheral blood obtained from 46 of 60 (76.7%) HCC patients. Triple-immunofluorescence staining showed that twist and vimentin expression could be detected in CTCs obtained from 39 (84.8%) and 37 (80.4%) of the 46 patients, respectively. The expression of both twist and vimentin in CTCs was significantly correlated with portal vein tumor thrombus. Coexpression of twist and vimentin in CTCs could be detected in 32 (69.6%) of the 46 patients and was highly correlated with portal vein tumor thrombus, TNM classification and tumor size. Quantitative fluorescence western blot analysis revealed that the expression levels of E-cadherin, vimentin and twist in HCC tumors were significantly associated with the positivity of isolated CTCs (P=0.013, P=0.012, P=0.009, respectively). However, there was no significant difference in ZEB1, ZEB2, snail and slug expression levels in CTCs, primary HCC tumors and adjacent non-tumoral liver tissues across samples with regard to the clinicopathological parameters. Our results demonstrate that the EMT has a role in promoting the blood-borne dissemination of primary HCC cells, and the twist and vimentin expression levels in CTCs could serve as promising biomarkers for evaluating metastasis and prognosis in HCC patients.

Abstract

The process psi(3686) -> pi(0)h(c), h(c) -> gamma eta(c) has been studied with a data sample of 106 +/- 4 million Psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The mass and width of the P-wave charmonium spin-singlet state h(c)(P-1(1)) are determined by simultaneously fitting distributions of the pi(0) recoil mass for 16 exclusive eta(c) decay modes. The results, M(h(c)) 3525.31 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.14(syst) MeV/c(2) and Gamma(h(c)) = 0.70 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.22 MeV, are consistent with and more precise than previous measurements. We also determine the branching ratios for the 16 exclusive eta(c) decay modes, five of which have not been measured previously. New measurements of the eta(c) line- shape parameters in the E1 transition h(c) -> gamma eta(c) are made by selecting candidates in the h(c) signal sample and simultaneously fitting the hadronic mass spectra for the 16 eta(c) decay channels. The resulting eta(c) mass and width values are M(eta(c)) = 2984.49 +/- 1.16 +/- 0.52 MeV/c(2) and Gamma(eta(c)) 36.4 +/- 3.2 +/- 1.7 MeV. 44. Structural damage detection of controlled building structures using frequency response functions

Abstract

If a building structure requires both a vibration control system and a health monitoring system, the integration of the two systems will be cost-effective and beneficial. One of the key problems of this integrated system is how to use control devices to enhance system identification and damage detection. This paper presents a new method for system identification and damage detection of controlled building structures equipped with semi-active friction dampers through model updating based on frequency response functions. The two states of the building are first created by adding a known stiffness using semi-active friction dampers. A scheme based on the frequency response functions of the two states of the building is then presented to identify stiffness parameters of structural members in consideration of structural connectivity and transformation information. By applying the proposed model updating scheme to the damaged building, a damage detection scheme is proposed based on the identified stiffness parameters of structural members of both the original and damaged buildings. The feasibility of the proposed schemes is finally demonstrated through a detailed numerical investigation in terms of an example building, in which the effects of measurement noise and excitation conditions are discussed. The numerical results clearly show that the proposed method can locate and quantify damage satisfactorily even though measurement noise is taken into consideration. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. 46. Electromechanical modeling and experimental analysis of a compression-based piezoelectric vibration energy harvester

Abstract

Over the past few decades, wireless sensor networks have been widely used in the field of structure health monitoring of civil, mechanical, and aerospace systems. Currently, most wireless sensor networks are battery-powered and it is costly and unsustainable for maintenance because of the requirement for frequent battery replacements. As an attempt to address such issue, this article theoretically and experimentally studies a compression-based piezoelectric energy harvester using a multilayer stack configuration, which is suitable for civil infrastructure system applications where large compressive loads occur, such as heavily vehicular loading acting on pavements. In this article, we firstly present analytical and numerical modeling of the piezoelectric multilayer stack under axial compressive loading, which is based on the linear theory of piezoelectricity. A two-degree-of-freedom electromechanical model, considering both the mechanical and electrical aspects of the proposed harvester, was developed to characterize the harvested electrical power under the external electrical load. Exact closed-form expressions of the electromechanical models have been derived to analyze the mechanical and electrical properties of the proposed harvester. The theoretical analyses are validated through several experiments for a test prototype under harmonic excitations. The test results exhibit very good agreement with the analytical analyses and numerical simulations for a range of resistive loads and input excitation levels. © 2014 The Author(s).

Abstract

An intelligent civil structure offers ultimate protection to its structure, contents and occupants in terms of safety and functionality against undesired dynamic loadings and structural deficiency. In this paper, the concept of the future intelligent civil structure featuring self-adaptive, selfprognostic, self-sensing, self-powering and self-repairing abilities, is proposed. A decade research efforts from Centre for Built Infrastructure Research, University of Technology Sydney, towards the development and concept proof of such intelligent structure is reviewed.

48. Experimental investigation on statistical moment-based structural damage detection method

Abstract

Although vibration-based structural damage detection methods have demonstrated various degrees of success, the damage detection of civil structures still remains as a challenging task. The main obstacles include the insensitivity to local damage and the high sensitivity to measurement noise. A new structural damage detection method based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of a structure has been recently proposed by the authors, and the numerical study manifested that the proposed method is sensitive to local structural damage but insensitive to measurement noise. The experimental investigation on this method is presented in this article. Three shear building models with and without damage were built and subjected to ground motions generated by a shaking table. The displacement and acceleration responses of each building model at each floor were recorded. The recorded ground motion and building responses as well as identified structural damping ratios were then used to identify damage locations and severities using the statistical moment-based damage detection method. The identified damage locations and severities were compared with the theoretical values. The comparison is found satisfactory, and the method proposed is effective and feasible. © The Author(s), 2009.

50. Experimental investigations of material properties of timber utility poles using various material testing approaches

Abstract

This paper presents an investigation of using different material testing approaches to determine material properties of timber utility poles from two hardwood tree species, i.e. Spotted Gum and Tallowwood. The material properties investigated are the Modulus of Elasticity (MOE), the Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and the compression strength (CS) in longitudinal direction as well as radial and tangential directions of the cross section of the poles. These material properties are needed for the accurate modelling of timber poles using Finite Element Method (FEM) for the study of stress wave propagation and damage detection in timber utility poles. In open literatures, for most timber species such comprehensive material property data are scarce to find. Typically, material properties available are only in the longitudinal direction. Furthermore, most international standards cover only details on material testing in longitudinal direction and no coherent nor comprehensive guidelines are given for the testing of the full orthotropic material properties of timber. Hence, an extensive study is deemed necessary to investigate a suitable approach to determine full material properties of timber. Two hardwood timber species, namely Spotted Gum and Tallowwood are selected for this investigation. Beside full material properties, the investigation is extended to examine different material testing approaches (bending, compression and tension testing) for the determination of the same material properties. The presented material testing is conducted on numerous small clear specimens as well as on four full scale 5 m long timber pole specimens of the two mentioned hardwood tree species. © (2013) Trans Tech Publicutions, Switzerland.
