With little knowledge on the joint effects of metal exposure on dyslipidemia, we aimed to investigate the relationship between exposure to metal and dyslipidemia among U.S adults based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES). Based on the five NHANES waves(2011-2020), we selected five metals in blood as exposure, namely, Cadmium(Cd), Lead(Pb), Total Mercury(Hg), Manganese(Mn) and Selenium(Se), which were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Survey-multivariable logistic regression, Generalized Weighted Quantile Sum(WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression(BKMR) were performed to determine whether dyslipidemia was associated with single metals or mixed metals. Our study included 12,526 participants aged from 20 to 80, representing 577.1 million non-institutionalized U.S. adults. We found a positive association between several metals including Pb [Adjusted odds ratio(AOR)=1.332, 95%CI:1.165, 1.522], Total Hg(AOR=1.264, 95%CI:1.120, 1.427), Mn(AOR=1.181, 95%CI:1.046, 1.334) and Se(AOR=1.771, 95%CI:1.576, 1.992) and dyslipidemia. According to the WQS approach, metal mixtures were positively associated with dyslipidemia(AOR:1.310, 95%CI: 1.216, 1.411) after a full-model adjustment. As is shown in the BKMR model, mixed metals tended to be positively associated with dyslipidemia ratios in a significant manner. Females, non-Hispanic white populations, people aged over 60 and those who did a little physical activity had a greater risk for dyslipidemia. Our findings suggest metals including Cd, Pb, Hg, Mn and Se and their combinations may adversely affect dyslipidemia among U.S adults. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the study, it is possible that reverse causation may exist.

As a class of common emerging pollutants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and their alternatives have been widely detected in various environmental matrices, exhibiting a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. Nevertheless, changes in biomolecular structure and function of duckweed caused by PFASs and their alternatives remain unknown thus far. Brain is a potential target for neuroprogestogens and/or peripheral progestogens. Previous studies reported that expression of genes about steroidogenesis, reproduction, cell cycle, and circadian rhythm in zebrafish brain could be affected by progestogens. However, there are limited information from metabolites or biomacromolecules aspects, leaving an enormous gap in understanding toxic effects of progestogens on fish brain. In this study, we exposed zebrafish embryos to 2.8, 27.6, and 289.8 ng/L dydrogesterone (DDG, a synthetic progestogen) until sexual maturity (140 days). LC-MS and GC-MS based untargeted metabolomics and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were then performed to investigate the metabolic profiles and macromolecular changes of brain of these zebrafish. The results from multivariate statistical analysis of metabolite features showed a clear separation between different treatment groups of both female and male zebrafish brains. DDG exposure increased the levels of cholesterol, saturated fatty acids, and nucleoside monophosphates, but decreased the contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), lysophosphatides, and nucleosides in dose-dependent manner. FTIR results indicated that DDG exposure led to accumulation of saturated lipids, reduction of nucleic acids and carbohydrates, and alteration of protein secondary structures. The findings from this study demonstrated that DDG could affect contents of metabolites and biomacromolecules of zebrafish brain, which may finally lead to brain dysfunctions.

The biotransformation of sulfamonomethoxine (SMM) was studied in an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system to understand the role of sorption by microbial cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the role of functional microbe/enzyme biodegradation. Biodegradation played a more important role than adsorption, while microbial cells covered with tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) showed higher adsorption capacity than microbial cells themselves or microbial cells covered with both loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and TB-EPS. The binding tests between EPS and SMM and the spectroscopic analyses (3D-EEM, UV-Vis, and FTIR) were performed to obtain more information about the adsorption process. The data showed that SMM could interact with EPS by combining with aromatic protein compounds, fulvic acid-like substances, protein amide II, and nucleic acids. The presence of benzothiazoles (BTHs) and organic ultraviolet filters (UV filters) in aquatic ecosystems has emerged as a significant environmental issue, requiring urgent and efficient determination methods. A new, rapid, and sensitive determination method using gas chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS) was developed for the simultaneous extraction and analysis of 10 commonly used BTHs and 10 organic UV filters in surface water, wastewater, sediment, and sludge. For aqueous samples, solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was employed with optimizing of SPE cartridge type, pH, and elution solvent. For solid samples, ultrasonic extraction-solid-phase extraction purification (UE-SPE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) methods were compared. And extraction conditions for ultrasonic extraction method (extraction solvents and extraction times) and PLE method (extraction temperatures and extraction cycles) were optimized. The limits of quantification for the 20 target compounds in surface water and wastewater were 0.01-2.12 ng/L and 0.05-6.14 ng/L, while those for sediment and sludge with UE-SPE method were 0.04-5.88 ng/g and 0.22-6.61 ng/g, respectively. Among the 20 target compounds, the recoveries ranged from 70 to 130% were obtained for 16, 15, 15, and 15 analytes in the matrix-spiked samples of surface water, wastewater, sediment, and sludge with three levels, respectively. And the precision was also acceptable with relative standard deviation (RSD) below 20% for all analytes. The developed methods were applied for the determination and quantification of target compounds in surface water, sediment, wastewater, and sludge samples collected from two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the Pearl River in Guangzhou, China. BTHs were frequently detected in surface water and wastewater, while UV filters were mainly found in sediment and sludge. Benzotriazole (BT) and 2-hydroxybenzothiazole (2-OH-BTH) were the two major BTHs in influent wastewater and surface water, respectively, with concentrations up to 966 and 189 ng/L. As for sediment and sludge, 2-(2'-hydroxy-5'-octylphenyl)-benzotriazole (UV-329) was a predominant chemical, detected at concentrations of 111 and 151 ng/g, respectively.

Landfill sites have been regarded as a significant source of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) in groundwater. However, our understanding about the compositions of CECs in landfill leachate and adjacent groundwater is still very limited. Here we investigated the CECs in landfill leachates and groundwater of Guangzhou in South China by target, suspect and non-target analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). A variety of CECs (n = 242), including pharmaceuticals (n = 64), pharmaceutical intermediates (n = 18), personal care products (n = 9), food additives (n = 18), industrial chemicals (n = 82, e.g., flame retardants, plasticizers, antioxidants and catalysts), pesticides (n = 26), transformation products (n = 8) and other organic compounds (n = 17) were (tentatively) identified by non-target and suspect screening. 142 CECs were quantitated with target analysis, and among them 37, 24 and 27 CECs were detected respectively in the raw leachate (272-1780 μg/L), treated leachate (0.25-0.81 μg/L) and groundwater (0.10-53.7 μg/L). The CECs in the raw leachates were efficiently removed with the removal efficiencies greater than 88.7%. Acesulfame, bisphenol F and ketoprofen were the most abundant compounds in both treated leachate and groundwater. The CECs in groundwater was found most likely to be originated from the landfill sites. Our results highlight the importance of non-target screening in identifying CECs, and reveal the contamination risk of groundwater by landfill leachate.

Increased disinfection efforts in various parts of China, including Hong Kong, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus may lead to elevated concentrations of disinfectants in domestic sewage and surface runoff in Hong Kong, generating large quantities of toxic disinfection byproducts. Our study investigated the presence and distribution of four trihalomethanes (THMs), six haloacetic acids (HAAs), and eight nitrosamines (NAMs) in rivers and seawater in Hong Kong. The concentrations of THMs (mean concentration: 1.6 µg/L [seawater], 3.0 µg/L [river water]), HAAs (mean concentration: 1.4 µg/L [seawater], 1.9 µg/L [river water]), and NAMs (mean concentration: 4.4 ng/L [seawater], 5.6 ng/L [river water]) did not significantly differ between river water and seawater. The total disinfection byproduct content in river water in Hong Kong was similar to that in Wuhan and Beijing (People's Republic of China), and the total THM concentration in seawater was significantly higher than that before the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the regulated disinfection byproducts, none of the surface water samples exceeded the maximum index values for THM4 (80 μg/L), HAA5 (60 μg/L), and nitrosodimethylamine (100 ng/L) in drinking water. Among the disinfection byproducts detected, bromoform in rivers and seawater poses the highest risk to aquatic organisms, which warrants attention and mitigation efforts. Little evidence exists concerning the associations of greenspace with childhood lipid profiles and dyslipidemias, especially in developing countries and regions. We aimed to investigate the associations of greenspace surrounding schools with lipid levels and dyslipidemia prevalence among Chinese children and teenagers. We obtained baseline information and health data of 10,408 children and teenagers (aged 6-18 years) who studied from 94 schools in China. We measured levels of four blood lipids: triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Dyslipidemias were defined using standard recommendations. Greenness surrounding schools were assessed using two satellite-based greenness indices, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) at 300-, 500-, and 1000-m circular buffers based on each school's latitude and longitude. We used random forest model combined with meteorological and remote sensing data to estimate air pollution levels surrounding each school. We used generalized linear mixed models to estimate the associations of greenness with lipid levels and dyslipidemias prevalence. We also performed sub-group and mediation analyses. Landfills are the main destination of many urban wastes containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and PFAS may leach out from the waste and contaminate the surrounding groundwater. Here we investigated the occurrence of PFAS in leachate and surrounding groundwater from three landfills in Guangzhou, China by using a combined target and non-target approach. Non-target screening showed that a total of 651 PFAS with 96 classes were identified, including 17 legacy PFAS and 637 emerging PFAS. The quantitative target analysis of some PFAS revealed that the average removal rate of PFAS from the raw leachates were ranged between 62 % and 99 %. Statistical analysis and source analysis suggested that landfill leachate was a major source of PFAS in the groundwater within the landfills and downstream sites. The results from the combined target and non-target analyses demonstrated that PFAS in landfills could leach into the surrounding groundwater, and may affect the sustainable use of groundwater as a source of drinking water and pose a potential risk to human health.

Increasing use of feed and medicine in mariculture could cause negative environmental impacts such as habitat modification, microbial disease development and antibiotic resistance. Here we investigated contamination of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and composition of microbial community in grouper mariculture systems in Hainan province, China. Results showed detection of various antibiotic residues with the dominance of fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines in the six grouper cultivation systems. The concentrations of the detected antibiotics in the grouper mariculture water were significantly higher than those in the original seawater. Some of the detected antibiotics such as enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, oxytetracycline and erythromycin in the mariculture water and/or sediment would pose high resistance selection risks. Sulfonamides resistance genes sul1 and sul2 were found to be predominant in water and sediment, while tetracycline resistance genes were prevalent in fish gill and gut. The dominant bacterial phyla in water and sediments were Bacteroides, Actinomycetes, and Proteobacteria, while the dominant ones in fish gill and gut were the Proteobacteria. Genera of Vibrio and Mycobacterium in the core microbiota were important zoonotic pathogens, and there was a significant positive correlation between Vibrio and ARGs. Phyla of Proteobacteria, Actinomyces, and Cyanobacteria were positively correlated to ARGs, indicating that these microorganisms are potential hosts of ARGs. The putative functions of microbiome related to antibiotic resistance and human diseases were significantly higher in fish than in the mariculture environment. This study suggests that mariculture system is a reservoir of ARGs, and the use of antibiotics in mariculture could induce the increase of antibiotic resistance and the prevalence of opportunistic pathogens.

Natural and synthetic steroid hormones have been detected in swine farm wastewaters (SFWs) and receiving waters. However, little is known on their potential endocrine disrupting effects on fish population in receiving rivers. Here we investigated the concentrations of androgens and estrogens in the SFWs and the receiving waters. In addition, the endocrine disrupting effects of SFWs on wild western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were also analyzed by assessing the sex ratio, secondary sex characteristics and transcriptional expression of genes related to the endocrine system. Chemical analysis showed the maximum concentration of total androgens reached 1375.7 ng L−1 in the SFWs and 1020.8 ng L−1 in receiving river waters. A total of 3552 adult G. affinis were collected from the Lianhe River (Guangdong, China), which was heavily impacted by SFWs, before and after the Ban of Swine Farming (BSF) in the river basin. The results showed the presence of male-biased G. affinis populations and masculinized anal fins and hemal spines of females at all contaminated sites prior to BSF. In addition, the transcription of vitellogenin (vtg) was inhibited by SFWs by 99.9% in the females from one sampling site. In contrast, the adverse effects on the females were significantly decreased after BSF. Redundant and path analyses showed that skewed sex ratios of fish populations, masculinized secondary sex characteristics of females and the decrease of vtg transcripts of females were well correlated with the concentrations of androgens in the receiving waters. The findings from this study suggest that SFW can cause masculinization effects of wild G. affinis populations. An effective analytical method for target and non-target screening of multi-class emerging organic chemicals in aquaculture fish muscle samples using liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS/MS) was reported. Two sample pretreatment methods (QuEChERS and Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridge) were compared and assessed for 151 organic compounds covering a wide range of log Kow (-1.37-11.51) in freeze-dried fish samples. Captiva EMR-Lipid cartridge outperformed QuEChERS by high detection frequency (87.5%) and effective matrix removal with satisfactory standard deviation of the compounds (20%), and meanwhile provided acceptable recoveries for most organic chemicals at three spiking concentration levels (10, 50, and 100 ng g

Emerging organic contaminants (e.g., active pharmaceutical ingredients and personal care products ingredients) are ubiquitous in the environment and potentially harmful to ecosystems, have gained increasing public attention worldwide. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of data on these contaminants in Africa. In this study, various types of water samples (wastewater, surface water and tap water) collected from Lagos, Nigeria were analyzed for these chemicals by both target and non-target analysis on an UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS/MS. In total, 109 compounds were identified by non-target screening using the online database mzCloud. Level 1 identification confidence was achieved for 13 compounds for which reference standards were available and level 2 was achieved for the rest. In the quantitative analysis, 18 of 38 target compounds were detected, including the parent compounds and their metabolites. Acetaminophen, sulfamethoxazole, acesulfame, and caffeine were detected in all samples with their highest concentrations at 8000, 5300, 16, and 7700 μg/L in wastewater, 140000, 3300, 7.7, and 12000 μg/L in surface water, and 66, 62, 0.17 and 1000 μg/L in tap water, respectively. The occurrence of psychoactive substances, anticancer treatments, antiretrovirals, antihypertensives, antidiabetics and their metabolites were reported in Nigeria for the first time. These results indicate poor wastewater treatment and management in Nigeria, and provide a preliminary profile of organic contaminants occurring in Nigerian waters. The findings from this study urge more future research on chemical pollution in the aquatic environments in Nigeria.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are contaminants of global concern. Studies in Pearl River, south China have focused on the delta area, while the upstream contributions are unclear. Here, we systematically investigated the fate, trends and potential sources of 57 PFASs in river water, sediment and fish of the North and West Rivers of the Pearl River system. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonate (6:2Cl-PFESA) were frequently found compounds in waters, sediments and fish, suggesting their wide usage in this area and potential for bioaccumulation. Waters showed a higher ∑PFASs in the wet season compared to the dry season, but sediments did not. The North River contributed higher PFAS loads to the Pearl River Delta. Our results also reflect the current shift in PFAS usage from legacy substances to alternatives. This study, for the first time, reports data on PFASs in two upstream rivers of the Pearl River and on alternative PFASs such as PFESA in this area, which can better the understanding of their use, fate, risk assessment and further controls and management.

The pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a major challenge to health systems worldwide. Recently, numbers of epidemiological studies have illustrated that climate conditions and air pollutants are associated with the COVID-19 confirmed cases worldwide. Researches also suggested that the SARS-CoV-2 could be detected in fecal and wastewater samples. These findings provided the possibility of preventing and controlling the COVID-19 pandemic from an environmental perspective. With this review, the main purpose is to summarize the relationship between the atmospheric and wastewater environment and COVID-19. In terms of the atmospheric environment, the evidence of the relationship between atmospheric environment (climate factors and air pollution) and COVID-19 is growing, but currently available data and results are various. It is necessary to comprehensively analyze their associations to provide constructive suggestions in responding to the pandemic. Recently, large numbers of studies have shown the widespread presence of this virus in wastewater and the feasibility of wastewater surveillance when the pandemic is ongoing. Therefore, there is an urgent need to clarify the occurrence and implication of viruses in wastewater and to understand the potential of wastewater-based epidemiology of pandemic. Multiple systematic reviews on greenspace and health outcomes exist, but the overall evidence base remains unclear. Therefore, we performed an umbrella review to collect and appraise all relevant systematic reviews of epidemiological studies on greenness exposure and health. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from inception to June 28, 2021, and screened references of relevant articles. Systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses of epidemiological studies that examined the associations of greenness with any health outcome were included. Two independent investigators performed study selection and data extraction. We also evaluated the methodological quality of the included systematic reviews using the “Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2” checklist. A total of 40 systematic reviews and meta-analyses were included, of which most were cross-sectional studies conducted in high-income countries. Greenspace exposure was estimated with various objective and subjective parameters. Beneficial associations of greenspace with all-cause and stroke-specific mortality, CVD morbidity, cardiometabolic factors, mental health, low birth weight, physical activity, sleep quality, and urban crime were observed. No consistent associations between greenspace and other health outcomes (e.g., cancers) were observed. Most of the included systematic reviews and meta-analyses had one or more limitations in methodology. Our findings provide supportive evidence regarding the beneficial effects of greenspace exposure on some aspects of human health. However, the credibility of such evidence was compromised by methodological limitations. Dydrogesterone (DDG) acts on the reproduction but also affects the functioning of non-reproductive system. So far, the knowledge about other effects of DDG remains limited. Here we investigated the effects of DDG on the transcription of genes in innate immune and coagulation cascade in zebrafish embryos. The zebrafish embryos were exposed to DDG at 49.0, 527 and 5890 ng L− 1 for 144 hour post fertilization (hpf). The results showed that DDG significantly decreased the transcription of marker genes (e.g. tnfa, il8 and cc-chem) involved in the innate immune response at environmental concentrations. Moreover, DDG also down-regulated the transcription of genes in coagulation cascade (e.g. fga, fgb, fgg and f2). These results indicated that DDG had potential effects on the innate immune and coagulation cascade functions in the early life zebrafish, thus further affecting fish growth and health.

As an alternative to volatile organic solvents, ionic liquids (ILs) are known as "green solvents", and widely used in industrial applications. Swine farm wastewaters (SFWs) are generally discharged either directly into nearby rivers or into fish ponds as a source of fertilizer/food for aquaculture in China. SFWs contain various contaminants including steroid hormones. However, there is an extreme paucity of data on their effects in fish populations. Here we investigated the endocrine disrupting effects of SFWs in G. affinis from 2 rivers (7 sites) and 2 fish ponds (2 sites) receiving SFWs and a reference site in Guangdong Province, China. In this study, a total number of 3078 adult western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were collected and the sex ratio was determined. In addition, secondary sexual characteristics were examined and the transcriptional levels of target genes were analyzed. The results showed the mosquitofish populations had a significant increase in male-to-female ratio from 7 sites (including 2 fish ponds) among the 9 sampling sites. The hemal spines of females were masculinized at most sites while the hemal spines of males were feminized at approximately half of the sites (including 2 fish ponds). Significant reduction in vitellogenin (Vtg) mRNA expression was observed in females from 2 sites (including RS7) while elevated Vtg mRNA expression was noticed in males from 2 sites along the rivers (including RS7). Redundancy analysis showed that androgens in the water samples were closely related with male-to-female ratio in the mosquitofish populations and the masculinized hemal spines of females. The findings from this study demonstrated that discharge of SFWs could result in occurrence of both masculinized females and feminized males in mosquitofish population. Wide use of various chemicals has resulted in water pollution, which has become a global environmental concern. So far limited information is available on what chemicals in our water. Here we investigated the occurrence and profiles of organic chemicals in the North River, South China by applying non-target screening analysis with high resolution mass spectrometry. A total of 402 organic chemicals belonging to eleven categories were identified in the North River, with notable presence of industrial chemicals, pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Among these detected chemicals, over half of the tentatively identified compounds were rarely reported in the surface water, with a few compounds, e.g., sisomicin, simeton, 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol, xanthurenic acid and indole-3-carboxylic acid that have never been documented in the North River before, while the metabolites like 4-acetamidoantipyrine were also observed. The maximum concentration of the identified chemicals in the North River was above 300 ng/L (Sulfamonomethoxine). Principle component analysis results of the obtained dataset showed significant seasonal distribution, which could be linked to variations in wastewater discharge, river dilution and anthropogenic activities such as pesticide spray. Agricultural activities in the upper reaches led to detection of various pesticides in the river basin, especially in the wet season. The findings from this study demonstrated the widespread presence of chemicals in our waterway, and further retrospective analysis would reveal more information about chemicals of emerging concern.

Drinking water quality and safety are very important in protecting human health. Chemical contaminants in drinking water system have become an increasing concern. Our knowledge about what chemicals are present in drinking water is still limited. Here we screened chemicals of emerging concern in a conventional drinking water system based on suspect, non-target screening and target analysis, and assessed their variations in different seasons and different treatment units. Overall, 720 chemicals were identified with HRMS databases from the suspect and non-target screening and 48 chemicals in five categories were further confirmed with the high confidence level, with predominance of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and pesticides. Four compounds are newly found in aquatic environment with no literature or chemical occurrence data record. Temporal variations and variable removals were observed for these chemicals in the system. Target analysis of 110 PPCPs showed detection of 21, 19 and 22 compounds in the drinking water treatment plant with a concentration range of 0.11–844 ng/L in the three seasons, but only 8, 9 and 15 compounds detected in tap water (0.16–32.5 ng/L). The variations of the detected chemicals were less obvious in tap water, with most having concentrations below 2 ng/L. The results indicated efficient removal for most PPCPs in the drinking water system. The findings from this study demonstrated the strong capability of combined non-target screening and target analysis in identifying and assessing various organic chemicals in drinking water system.

Anthropogenic activities have inevitably impacted riverine ecosystems, yet their overall contribution to the assemblage of bacterial communities at a large river basin scale remains unclear. In this study, 16S amplicon sequencing was implemented to investigate the bacterial ecosystems in paired water and sediment of North River and West River basins in South China., which contains various anthropogenic environments (e.g., rural/urban area, mining area and livestock area). Subsequently, the links between bacterial community and various types of emerging pollutants in river water were analyzed. The results show that the bacterial assemblage of water and sediment had their own properties that the bacterial community of sediment were mainly affected by seasonal properties, while the bacterial community of water were affected by both seasons and anthropogenic activities. Therein, the aquatic bacterial compositions and abundances were driven by changes in temperature, dissolved oxygen and the emerging pollutants. The dominant phyla Proteobacteria and Firmicutes exhibited adaptability to the mining-affected regions, therein many clades (e.g., Beijerinckiaceae, Acetobacteraceae and Mycobacteriaceae) were also prevalent in the livestock-affected and densely-populated regions. In addition, these two phyla presented associations to the antibiotic resistance in water. The levels of antibiotics, relative antibiotic resistance gens (ARGs) and non-antibiotic pharmaceuticals (NAPs) were closely related to bacterial community composition, diversity and functional diversity, indicating their drive in shifting bacterial communities. Collectively, this work provides a basis for understanding the contribution of anthropogenic activities in shifting bacterial community at a large river basin scale. Further, the results provide new insights for expansion of ecological assessment.

We systematically investigated the occurrence and distribution of 93 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and 5 artificial sweeteners (ASs) in surface water and groundwater of Dongjiang River basin in south China. In surface water, 52 compounds were detected with median concentrations ranging from 0.06ng/L to 504ng/L, while in groundwater, 33 compounds were detected with concentrations up to 4580ng/L for acesulfame. PPCPs and ASs were widely detected in the surface water and groundwater samples, which indicated contamination by domestic wastewater in the surface water and groundwater of Dongjiang River basin. Temporal and spatial variations of the detected chemicals were observed in surface water. Acesulfame, sucralose and cyclamate can be used as wastewater indicators to imply contamination in groundwater caused by domestic wastewater due to their hydrophilicity, anthropogenic sources and ubiquity in groundwater. Moreover, the detection of the readily degradable ASs, cyclamate, was a strong indication of untreated wastewater in groundwater. Sucralose was found to be a suitable wastewater indicator to reflect domestic wastewater contamination in surface water and groundwater qualitatively and quantitatively, and it can be used to evaluate wastewater burden in surface water and groundwater of Dongjiang River basin. The wastewater burden data from this survey implied serious contamination in surface water and groundwater by domestic wastewater at Shima River, a tributary of the Dongjiang River. The findings from this study suggest that the selected labile and conservative chemicals can be used as indication of wastewater contamination for aquatic environments qualitatively and quantitatively.
