12. Numerical Analysis on Critical Current of Multi-Stage HTS Twisted Cable Consisting of Narrowed Soldered-Stacked-Square (3S) Wires

Abstract

The critical current of a multi-stage high-temperature superconducting (HTS) twisted cable using cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) is vital for its performance, since it determines the maximum current that the superconductor can carry in a superconducting state. This cable has a composite conductor structure with high current-carrying capacity, cooling efficiency, and stability, and can be used in high-field magnets. In this paper, based on a structure of a first-stage cable with HTS stacked-squared wires, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model is established by the homogenization method to make analytical calculations of the current density distribution and critical current values of the multi-stage twisted cable. The simulation results show that the critical current at 77 K of the multi-stage high-temperature superconducting twisted cable is 5.9 kA. Besides, the skin effect causes a higher current density near the outer side in comparison to the inner side. This work could be as a reference for designing a high field magnet using HTS square wires, and substantially reduces the computational complexity of simulating cables with complex structure.

13. A Low-Cost Voltage Acquisition System for High Temperature Superconductor Measurement in 77 K

Abstract

Currently, for quench detection, one of the most common methods is voltage measurement by using nanovoltmeters. Although the nanovoltmeter measurement accuracy is very high, there are only two measurement channels which cannot meet the requirement of multi-channels measurement. If multiple nanovoltmeters are applied together to monitor superconductors, the use-cost will be hard to accept. To reduce the costs of multi-channels voltage measurement for superconductors, a low-cost voltage acquisition system is designed in this paper. The core equipment of the system is a voltage acquisition board with multiple channels. To test the performances of the voltage acquisition system, a copper block immersed in liquid nitrogen, as a test sample, is measured by the voltage acquisition board. The results show the multi-channels voltage acquisition can be applied to interrogate weak voltage signals at low temperature. Furthermore, the voltage acquisition system is used to measure voltage changes of a high temperature superconducting (HTS) tape. The results coincide well with the HTS tape voltages measured by nanovoltmeters, which suggests that there is great potential of the voltage acquisition board for superconductor multi-channels voltage measurement applications.

14. Experimental Study of Relationship Between MQE and NZPV With Different Currents on HTS Tapes in a New Simplified Cooling Equipment

Abstract

Quench is a significant challenge to the operation of high temperature superconducting (HTS) conductors. As an HTS conductor operates at different currents, its quench behaviors may be different. In order to study the quench behaviors of the HTS conductor at different operating currents, in this paper, hot spot-induced quench experiments are performed. In the experiments, to cool the HTS conductor, a simplified cooling device in which the conductor above the liquid nitrogen is able to keep temperature near the temperature of liquid nitrogen is designed. By applying different heat pulses to the conductor to induce quenches, its minimum quench energy (MQE) and normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV) at different operating currents are obtained. The quenches are monitored via voltage changes measured by voltage taps combined with a voltage acquisition system and temperature changes measured by thermocouples combined with a temperature acquisition system. The results show that as current increases from 0.3 Ic to 0.7 Ic, the MQE decreases from 218 J to74 J, but the NZPV increases from 1.85 mm/s to 3.10 mm/s, the changes of these two parameters are nonlinear.

15. Optimization on Critical Current and Transport Loss of Canted Stack by Copper Interleaving Method

Abstract

Recent HTS applications are generally based on REBCO tapes, and REBCO stack is a common intermediate in these applications. Therefore, improving the REBCO stack is of economic and practical significance. A novel stack, canted stack, is proposed to release the limitation of stacking number. Copper interleaving is a method to improve electromagnetic performance. Namely, any two adjacent REBCO tapes can be interleaved by one copper tape. However, copper interleaving in the middle part and the marginal part may bring different effects on canted stack. In this study, we discuss the difference of marginal interleaving and middle interleaving comprehensively. Based on the experimental verification, this study confirms that the middle interleaving has a better performance in critical current and transport loss of canted stack.

16. Experimental Investigation of a Quench Detection Method Utilizing Current Redistribution With the Hall Probe in HTS Cables

Abstract

The complexity of the Cable-in-Conduit Conductor (CICC) structure made with second-generation high-temperature superconducting materials presents challenges for quench detection, which is different from low-temperature superconductors due to their relatively low propagation velocity. This study builds upon simulation results from a quench detection method that focuses on current redistribution effects. The objective is to further investigate the relationship between the level of current redistribution, hot spot power, operating current, and the size of the detection signal. Parameters under examination include the height of the Hall probe, the distance between the Hall probe and the hot spot, and the square wire identification where the Hall probe is positioned. The findings of this study demonstrate that the quench detection method, based on current redistribution effects, is effective in detecting hot spots in twisted HTS cables. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis is conducted to evaluate the impact of the operating current on the level of current redistribution and the influence of the Hall probe height on the detection signal.

Abstract

In a high temperature superconducting (HTS) DC induction heater, an HTS coil and an iron core are essential to generate DC magnetic field and form the magnetic circuit. To understand effect of the iron core on the critical current and the inductance of the HTS coil, we prepared a double pancake coil (DPC) and an iron core in this study, and measured the critical current and inductance of the DPC. The experimental results were compared with the numerically calculated ones as well. The measured critical currents of the DPC without and with the iron core are 89 A and 84 A, respectively. Thus, the iron core does affect the critical current. Moreover, the measured inductances are 6.94 mH and 45 mH. The measured data of the critical currents and the inductances are in good agreement with the calculated results

Abstract

During the past decade, a number of high temperature superconducting (HTS) transformer prototypes have been designed, and the majority of them are full-core transformers and air-core transformers. However, in this study, we proposed a new type of HTS transformer, where the iron core is different in that the limbs and connecting yokes are absent. To investigate the performance of this type of HTS transformer, we design and fabricate a single-phase HTS partial core transformer prototype using the secondary generation (2G) HTS GdBCO wires. The iron core is at room temperature, and the windings are immersed in liquid Nitrogen. The structures of primary and secondary windings are three layers connected in series and nine double pancakes connected in parallel, respectively. Fundamental characteristics are obtained by standard short-circuit, no-load and load tests in liquid Nitrogen temperature of 77 K. In addition, an equivalent circuit of the HTS transformer is proposed to analyze the characteristic of the transformer. The calculated values based on the equivalent circuit are consistent with that of experiment. The detailed results about the design of the HTS partial-core transformer, the experiment, and the equivalent circuit are presented and discussed in this study.
