Abstract

Background: To systematically evaluate the relationship between the expression level of long noncoding RNA NEAT1 and the clinical characteristics and prognostic value of rectal cancer patients. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library database and case-control studies on the correlation between abnormal expression of lncRNA NEAT1 and prognosis of rectal cancer patients published by the American clinical trials registry before May 1, 2023 were searched. The search time was from the establishment of the database to May 30, 2023. Results: A total of 7 case-control studies were included, including 1063 cancer patients. Abstract

Integration between biology and information science benefits both fields. Many related models have been proposed, such as computational visual cognition models, computational motor control models, integrations of both and so on. In general, the robustness and precision of recognition is one of the key problems for object recognition models. In this paper, inspired by features of human recognition process and their biological mechanisms, a new integrated and dynamic framework is proposed to mimic the semantic extraction, concept formation and feature re-selection in human visual processing. The main contributions of the proposed model are as follows: (1) Semantic feature extraction: Local semantic features are learnt from episodic features that are extracted from raw images through a deep neural network; (2) Integrated concept formation: Concepts are formed with local semantic information and structural information learnt through network. (3) Feature re-selection: When ambiguity is detected during recognition process, distinctive features according to the difference between ambiguous candidates are re-selected for recognition. Experimental results on hand-written digits and facial shape dataset show that, compared with other methods, the new proposed model exhibits higher robustness and precision for visual recognition, especially in the condition when input samples are smantic ambiguous. Meanwhile, the introduced biological mechanisms further strengthen the interaction between neuroscience and information science.

14. Biologically inspired model simulating visual pathways and cerebellum function in human - Achieving visuomotor coordination and high precision movement with learning ability

Abstract

In recent years, the interdisciplinary research between information science and neuroscience has been a hotspot. In this paper, based on recent biological findings, we proposed a new model to mimic visual information processing, motor planning and control in central and peripheral nervous systems of human. Main steps of the model are as follows: 1) Simulating "where" pathway in human: the Selective Search method is applied to simulate the function of human dorsal visual pathway to localize object candidates; 2) Simulating "what" pathway in human: a Convolutional Deep Belief Network is applied to simulate the hierarchical structure and function of human ventral visual pathway for object recognition; 3) Simulating motor planning process in human: habitual motion planning process in human is simulated, and motor commands are generated from the combination of control signals from past experiences; 4) Simulating precise movement control in human: calibrated control signals, which mimic the adjustment for movement from cerebellum in human, are generated and updated from calibration of movement errors in past experiences, and sent to the movement model to achieve high precision. The proposed framework mimics structures and functions of human recognition, visuomotor coordination and precise motor control. Experiments on object localization, recognition and movement control demonstrate that the new proposed model can not only accomplish visuomotor coordination tasks, but also achieve high precision movement with learning ability. Meanwhile, the results also prove the validity of the introduced mechanisms. Furthermore, the proposed model could be generalized and applied to other systems, such as mechanical and electrical systems in robotics, to achieve fast response, high precision movement with learning ability., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Purpose: This study aims to translate and validate the Learned Helplessness Scale (LHS) for use in the educational context and specifically among Chinese law school students. Understanding learned helplessness in the context of Chinese law students can provide unique insights into the interaction of legal education, psychological health, and cultural influences, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of learned helplessness. Methods: A total of 711 Chinese college students from two law schools participated in this study. The Learned Helplessness Scale (LHS) was translated into Chinese using forward and backward translation. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and construct validity were conducted to assess the dimensionality of the Chinese version of the LHS (Chinese LHS). Results: The exploratory factor analysis indicated that the Chinese LHS has a four-factor structure consisting of 14 items, which accounted for 50% of the total variance. The subsequent confirmatory factor analysis further supported this four-factor structure. The internal consistency of the Chinese LHS was found to be medium to high, with Cronbach's α values ranging from 0.63 to 0.87 for the subfactors, and 0.79 for the total scale. In addition, concurrent validity is also confirmed. Conclusion: The 14-item version of the Chinese LHS is a psychometric sound instrument for assessing learned helplessness among Chinese law school students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Fog backscattering is one of the major reasons for false alarming in the laser proximity fuze. However, its influence to the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser fuze has not been well studied. In this paper, a Monte-Carlo simulation model of the FMCW laser transmission in fog based on the laser detection principle and the Mie scattering theory was established. The simulation results showed that the fog backscattering signals spread the beat signals spectrum. Experiments were also performed in a simulated laboratory environment and the results confirmed the findings. Therefore, this study can greatly assist the signal identification between target reflection and fog backscattering and potentially avoid the false alarms.

Abstract

Capacitive coupling intra-body communication (CC-IBC) has become one of the candidates for healthcare sensor networks due to its positive prevailing features of energy efficiency, transmission rate and security. Under the CC-IBC scheme, some of the electric field emitted from signal (SIG) electrode of the transmitter will couple directly to the ground (GND) electrode, acting equivalently as an internal impedance of the signal source and inducing considerable energy losses. However, none of the previous works have fully studied the problem. In this paper, the underlying theory of such energy loss is investigated and quantitatively evaluated using conventional parameters. Accordingly, a method of electric active shielding is proposed to reduce the displacement current across the SIG-GND electrodes, leading to less power loss. In addition, the variation of such loss in regard to frequency range and positions on human body was also considered. The theory was validated by finite element method simulation and experimental measurement. The prototype result shows that the receiving power has been improved by approximate 5.5 dBm while the total power consumption is maximally 9 mW less using the proposed technique, providing an energy efficient option in physical layer for wearable and implantable healthcare sensor networks.

Abstract

In this paper, a novel distributed state estimation scheme with sampled data is proposed for the semi-Markovian jumping neural networks (SMJNNs) with time-varying delays. In particular, mode-dependent distributed state estimators are designed to provide more flexibility. Based on the mode-dependent Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, sufficient criteria are presented for ensuring the existence of the state estimators, based on which the desired mode-dependent estimator gains are further obtained.
