18. Study on indium leaching from mechanically activated hard zinc residue

Abstract

In this study, changes in physicochemical properties and leachability of indium from mechanically activated hard zinc residue by planetary mill were investigated. The results showed that mechanical activation increased specific surface area, reaction activity of hard zinc residue, and decreased its particle size, which had a positive effect on indium extraction from hard zinc residue in hydrochloric acid solution. Kinetics of indium leaching from unmilled and activated hard zinc residue were also investigated, respectively. It was found that temperature had an obvious effect on indium leaching rate. Two different kinetic models corresponding to reactions which are diffusion controlled, [1-(1- x)1/3]2=kt and (1-2x/3)-(1-x)2/3=kt were used to describe the kinetics of indium leaching from unmilled sample and activated sample, respectively. Their activation energies were determined to be 17.89 kJ/mol (umilled) and 11.65 kJ/mol (activated) within the temperature range of 30°C to 90°C, which is characteristic for a diffusion controlled process. The values of activation energy demonstrated that the leaching reaction of indium became less sensitive to temperature after hard zinc residue mechanically activated by planetary mill.

28. Co-existence of lung carcinoma metastasis and enchondroma in the femur of a patient with Ollier disease

Abstract

Tumour-to-tumour metastasis is very unusual and has been defined as a tumour metastasis into another histologically different tumour. It is extremely rare in bone. We report a case of lung squamous cell carcinoma metastasized to an enchondroma in the femur of a patient with Ollier disease. A 60-year-old female had a history of a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. She underwent a video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy, and a follow-up MRI scan showed three lesions in the left distal femur and proximal tibia, which were initially interpreted as metastasis on radiology. Resection of the left proximal tibial lesion was performed, and the pathological findings were consistent with enchondroma with no evidence of metastasis. Subsequent curettage of lesions in the distal left femur revealed metastatic poorly differentiated carcinoma with foci of hyaline cartilage, which was most consistent with metastatic carcinoma in a pre-existing enchondroma. The MRI films were re-reviewed. Characteristic MRI features of enchondroma were found in the lesion in the left proximal tibia and one of the lesions in the left distal femur, while the features of the other lesion in the left distal femur included cortical destruction and extensive oedema in surrounding soft tissue, which were consistent with a malignant tumour. In addition, the enchondroma in the lateral condyle showed blurring and irregular inner margin and adjacent bone oedema, which likely represents a co-existing metastatic tumour and enchondroma. The difference in lineage was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The final diagnosis was metastatic poorly differentiated carcinoma of the lung into a co-existent enchondroma. The diagnosis can be challenging and could be easily overlooked both radiologically and histologically. Thorough clinical and radiological information is critical for the diagnosis, and despite a very unusual event, awareness of the tumour-to-tumour metastasis phenomenon can avoid an inaccurate diagnosis by the pathologist, therefore preventing inappropriate clinical intervention.

Abstract

An analysis of the addition reaction of (i-Pr2NP)2Fe2(CO)6 unit to C double bond O, C triple bond N, and C double bond C multiple bonds reveals that the multiple bond reactivity pattern to the carbonyl unit is in the order C double bond O is greater than C double bond C is greater than C triple bond N. The unit's preference for the C double bond O bond over the C double bond C multiple bond during reaction in maleic anhydride validates the reactivity sequence. The complexed ((i-Pr2NP)2NHC double bond CHCO2-Et)-Fe2(CO)6 imine derivative modifies organic system tautomeric equilibria by complexation with an (i-Pr2NP)2-Fe2(CO)6 unit.

Abstract

Fe(CO)5 in boiling toluene and Fe3(CO)12 in boiling benzene promoted the ring cleavage of tri-tert-butylcyclotriphosphine forming t-Bu3P3Fe2(CO)6. The product featured sterically hindered tert-butyl groups which reduced the chemical reactivity of the compound. The introduction of a chlorine atom at the center of the cyclotriphosphine intermediate replacing the diisopropylamino unit increased the accessibility of the compound to metal carbonyl intrusion.

Item does not contain fulltext, AIMS: To investigate the feasibility of restoring bladder function and prevention of renal deterioration by neurorrhaphy in rats with neurogenic bladder (NB). METHODS: Forty-two rats were assigned to the end-to-side nerve coaptation group (ECG, n = 16), no nerve coaptation group (NCG, n = 16), and control group (CG, n = 10). In the ECG, the left ventral root (VR) and dorsal root (DR) of L6 and S1 were transected, and the distal stump of L6VR was sutured to the lateral face of L4VR. In the NCG, the left VR and DR of L6 and S1 were transected, but coaptation was not performed. In the CG, no operation was performed. Nerve regeneration, bladder function, and renal function were evaluated by FluoroGold (FG) retrograde tract tracing, cystometry, electrical stimulation, MRI, histology and biochemical assays. RESULTS: In the ECG, FG-labeled neurons were observed in the left ventral horn of L4 spinal cord. There was a significant increase in intravesical pressure upon stimulation of the left L4VR proximal to the coaptation. Maximum cystometric capacity, post-void residual urine, bladder compliance and weight, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and fibrotic area of bladder and kidney were lower in the ECG than in the NCG, but higher than the CG. Hydronephrosis was noticed in ECG and NCG rats. Maximum detrusor voiding pressure was higher in the ECG and CG than in the NCG. CONCLUSIONS: End-to-side neurorrhaphy is a useful method for restoring bladder function and preventing renal injury in rats with NB.

Domain switching in ferroelectric ceramics near the morphotrophic phase boundary (MPB), where tetragonal phase and rhombohedral phase coexist, is studied by a micromechanical model by using an inverse-pole-figure (IPF) method. The IPF method is used for obtaining the domain switching induced polarization and strain by using integrations over the unit spherical surface.
