13. Phase Resolved Observations of Temporal Soliton Pulse Propagation in Silicon Nanowires

Abstract

An effort was conducted to study temporal soliton pulse propagation in silicon nano-waveguides. These nonlinear phenomenas were studied both numerically and experimentally with phase-resolved Frequency Resolved Optical Gating. Soliton pulse broadening, as well as pulse splitting from two-photon absorption, was observed experimentally, and the simulations matched all of the experimental results. Further simulations with the validated model have demonstrated that compression can be observed in centimeter-length waveguides. This study has demonstrated the feasibility of self-sustaining soliton pulse propagation at substantially shorter length scales than optical fibers, which offers much potential applications with regards to all-optical data transfer and computing.

14. Soliton Propagation with Cross Phase Modulation in Silicon Photonic Crystal Waveguides

Abstract

An effort was conducted to numerically determine, using the Nonlinear Schrodinger Split-Step Fourier method, if using cross phase modulation could cause temporal soliton pulse propagation in a silicon slow-light photonic crystal waveguide shorter than a millimeter. The simulations demonstrated that due to the higher powers and shorter scales of photonic crystals, two-photon absorption would cause an optical soliton pulse to be extremely dissipative. The model demonstrated, however, that by utilizing cross-phase modulation, it is possible to sustain a compressed soliton pulse within a silicon photonic crystal waveguide subjected to two-photon absorption over longer relative distances.

Abstract

Optical soliton pulses offer many applications within optical communication systems, but by definition a soliton is only subjected to second-order anomalous group-velocity-dispersion; an understanding of higher-order dispersion is necessary for practical implementation of soliton pulses. A numerical model of a waveguide was developed using the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation, with parameters set to ensure the input pulse energy would be equal to the fundamental soliton energy. Higher-order group-velocity-dispersion was gradually increased, for various temporal widths and waveguide dispersions. A minimum pulse duration of 100-fs was determined to be necessary for fundamental soliton pulse propagation in practical photonic crystal waveguides.

40. Ultra-compact titanium dioxide micro-ring resonators with sub-10-μm radius for on-chip photonics

Abstract

Microring resonators (MRRs) with ultracompact footprints are preferred for enhancing the light-matter interactions to benefit various applications. Here, ultracompact titanium dioxide (TiO2) MRRs with sub-10-μm radii are experimentally demonstrated. Thanks to the large refractive index of TiO2, the quality factors up to ∼7.9 × 104 and ∼4.4 × 104 are achieved for TiO2 MRRs with radii of 10 μm and 6 μm, respectively, which result in large nonlinear power enhancement factors (>113) and large Purcell factors (>56). The four-wave mixing (FWM) measurements indicate that, compared to the large MRR, the FWM conversion efficiency of the ultracompact TiO2 MRRs can be greatly improved (e.g., -25 dB versus -31 dB), a harbinger of significant superiorities. Demonstrations in this work provide more arguments for the TiO2 waveguides as a promising platform for various on-chip photonic devices.

41. Slot Waveguides with Silicon-Rich Materials for Nonlinear Applications

Abstract

Slot waveguides based on silicon-rich materials are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which consist of a silicon-rich oxide (SRO) slot layer sandwiched by two silicon-rich nitride (SRN) layers. Measurements show the waveguides have a low propagation loss of ∼2.2 dB/cm and a 50-μ m-radius micro-ring resonator can achieve a loaded quality factor (Q) of ∼ 105. Four-wave mixing experiments in the slot waveguides reveal a high nonlinearity γ of 16 W-1 m-1 of the waveguide and an averaged nonlinear index n2 of 2.5 x 10-18 m 2/W of the silicon-rich materials, 10 times larger than that of stoichiometric silicon nitride (Si3N4). Supercontinuum generation (SCG) experiments have shown a large fabrication tolerance of such slot waveguides that 1.2 octave spectral broadening in a 1510-nm-wide slot waveguide can be achieved while that is 0.9 octave in a slot waveguide with a width shrinking as large as 220 nm.

Abstract

Unexpected irreversible damage occurred repeatedly in the asymmetric bismuth silicate (BSO) photorefractive spatial light modulator under some operation modes, even though the power of the write-light beam does not exceed the optical damage threshold. According to the microscopic surface images and the Raman spectra of the BSO film, sudden rising of temperature in local areas caused by the drift of the photon-induced electrons is responsible for the damage; the damage exists not only on the surface but also inside the BSO crystal. The damage is relative to the structure of the spatial light modulator, the operation mode, and the growth of the BSO crystal. The information provided by the damage is useful for optimizing the structure, the operation modes, and the performance of the photorefractive spatial light modulators.
