1. Solving bound-state equations in $\text{QCD}_2$ with bosonic and fermionic quarks

Abstract

We investigate the bound-state equations (BSEs) in two-dimensional QCD in the $N_c\to \infty$ limit, viewed from both the infinite momentum frame (IMF) and the finite momentum frame (FMF). The BSE of a meson in the original 't Hooft model, {\it viz.}, spinor $\text{QCD}_2$ containing only fermionc quarks, has been extensively studied in literature. In this work, we focus on the BSEs pertaining to two types of ``exotic" hadrons, a ``tetraquark" which is composed of a bosonic quark and bosonic antiquark, and a ``baryon" which is composed of a bosonic antiquark and a fermionic quark. Utilizing the Hamiltonian approach, we derive the corresponding BSEs for both types of ``exotic" hadrons, from the perspectives of the light-front and equal-time quantization, and confirm the known results. The recently available BSEs for ``tetraquark" in FMF has also been recovered with the aid of the diagrammatic approach. For the first time we also present the BSEs of a ``baryon" in FMF in the extended 't Hooft model. By solving various BSEs numerically, we obtain the mass spectra pertaining to ``tetraquark" and ``baryon" and the corresponding bound-state wave functions of the lowest-lying states. It is numerically demonstrated that, when a ``tetraquark" or ``baryon" is continuously boosted, the forward-moving component of the bound-state wave function approaches the corresponding light-cone wave function, while the backward-moving component fades away., Comment: 37 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

2. M4: Multi-Proxy Multi-Gate Mixture of Experts Network for Multiple Instance Learning in Histopathology Image Analysis

Abstract

Multiple instance learning (MIL) has been successfully applied for whole slide images (WSIs) analysis in computational pathology, enabling a wide range of prediction tasks from tumor subtyping to inferring genetic mutations and multi-omics biomarkers. However, existing MIL methods predominantly focus on single-task learning, resulting in not only overall low efficiency but also the overlook of inter-task relatedness. To address these issues, we proposed an adapted architecture of Multi-gate Mixture-of-experts with Multi-proxy for Multiple instance learning (M4), and applied this framework for simultaneous prediction of multiple genetic mutations from WSIs. The proposed M4 model has two main innovations: (1) utilizing a mixture of experts with multiple gating strategies for multi-genetic mutation prediction on a single pathological slide; (2) constructing multi-proxy expert network and gate network for comprehensive and effective modeling of pathological image information. Our model achieved significant improvements across five tested TCGA datasets in comparison to current state-of-the-art single-task methods. Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as a transformative power in enhancing natural language comprehension, representing a significant stride toward artificial general intelligence. The application of LLMs extends beyond conventional linguistic boundaries, encompassing specialized linguistic systems developed within various scientific disciplines. This growing interest has led to the advent of scientific LLMs, a novel subclass specifically engineered for facilitating scientific discovery. As a burgeoning area in the community of AI for Science, scientific LLMs warrant comprehensive exploration. However, a systematic and up-to-date survey introducing them is currently lacking. In this paper, we endeavor to methodically delineate the concept of "scientific language", whilst providing a thorough review of the latest advancements in scientific LLMs. Given the expansive realm of scientific disciplines, our analysis adopts a focused lens, concentrating on the biological and chemical domains. This includes an in-depth examination of LLMs for textual knowledge, small molecules, macromolecular proteins, genomic sequences, and their combinations, analyzing them in terms of model architectures, capabilities, datasets, and evaluation. Finally, we critically examine the prevailing challenges and point out promising research directions along with the advances of LLMs. By offering a comprehensive overview of technical developments in this field, this survey aspires to be an invaluable resource for researchers navigating the intricate landscape of scientific LLMs.

Abstract

Protonation of oxide cathodes triggers surface transition metal dissolution and accelerates the performance degradation of Li-ion batteries. While strategies are developed to improve cathode material surface stability, little is known about the effects of protonation on bulk phase transitions in these cathode materials or their sodium-ion battery counterparts. Here, using NaNiO2 in electrolytes with different proton-generating levels as model systems, a holistic picture of the effect of incorporated protons is presented. Protonation of lattice oxygens stimulate transition metal migration to the alkaline layer and accelerates layered-rock-salt phase transition, which leads to bulk structure disintegration and anisotropic surface reconstruction layers formation. A cathode that undergoes severe protonation reactions attains a porous architecture corresponding to its multifold performance fade. This work reveals that interactions between electrolyte and cathode that result in protonation can dominate the structural reversibility/stability of bulk cathodes, and the insight sheds light for the development of future batteries.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract

Rydberg microwave (MW) sensors are superior to conventional antenna-based techniques because of their wide operating frequency range and outstanding potential sensitivity. Here, we demonstrate a Rydberg microwave receiver with a high sensitivity of $62\,\mathrm{nV} \mathrm{cm}^{-1} \mathrm{Hz}^{-1/2}$ and broad instantaneous bandwidth of up to $10.2\,\mathrm{MHz}$. Such excellent performance was achieved by the amplification of one generated sideband wave induced by the strong coupling field in the six-wave mixing process of the Rydberg superheterodyne receiver, which was well predicted by our theory. Our system, which possesses a uniquely enhanced instantaneous bandwidth and high-sensitivity features that can be improved further, will promote the application of Rydberg microwave electrometry in radar and communication.

Abstract

This review summarizes the application of machine learning in research on the numbing substances of Zanthoxylum bungeanum. Different varieties of Z. bungeanum on the market vary in the composition and content of numbing substances. Traditional methods for the detection and analysis of the composition and content of numbing substances in Z. bungeanum have many limitations, so the introduction of machine learning algorithms has brought new possibilities to this field. Applying machine learning for predictive modeling of the quality of Z. bungeanum and modeling of its drying process, the sensory evaluation of Z. bungeanum, and establishing a germplasm bank for Z. bungeanum is of great significance for the genetic breeding of Z. bungeanum. This article systematically reviews the composition and content of numbing substances in different varieties of Z. bungeanum, and analyzes the application of machine learning algorithms in predictive quality modeling and drying modeling of Z. bungeanum and data analysis of its numbing substances. Integration with machine learning technology enables a deeper understanding of the currently established models, which will provide support for the optimization of the yield and quality of Z. bungeanum based on numbing substances.

Abstract

Here, using unique in-situ liquid secondary ion mass spectroscopy on isotope-labelled solid-electrolyte-interphase (SEI), assisted by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy and constrained ab initio molecular dynamics simulation, for the first time we answer the question regarding Li+ transport mechanism across SEI, and quantitatively determine the Li+-mobility therein. We unequivocally unveil that Li+ transport in SEI follows a mechanism of successive displacement, rather than "direct-hopping". We further reveal, in accordance with spatial-dependence of SEI structure across the thickness, the apparent Li+ self-diffusivity varies from 6.7*10-19 m2/s to 1.0*10-20 m2/s, setting a quantitative gauging of ionic transport behavior of SEI layer against the underlining electrode as well as the rate limiting step of battery operation. This direct study on Li+ kinetics in SEI fills part of the decade-long knowledge gap about the most important component in advanced batteries and provides more precise guidelines to the tailoring of interphasial chemistries for future battery chemistries., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

18. Generation and modulation of multiple 2D bulk photovoltaic effects in space-time reversal asymmetric 2H-FeCl2

Abstract

The two-dimensional (2D) bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is a cornerstone for future highly efficient 2D solar cells and optoelectronics. The ferromagnetic semiconductor 2H-FeCl2 is shown to realize a new type of BPVE in which spatial inversion (P), time reversal (T), and space-time reversal (PT) symmetries are broken (PT-broken). Using density functional theory and perturbation theory, we show that 2H-FeCl2 exhibits giant photocurrents, photo-spin-currents, and photo-orbital-currents under illumination by linearly polarized light. The injection-like and shift-like photocurrents coexist and propagate in different directions. The material also demonstrates substantial photoconductance, photo-spin-conductance, and photo-orbital-conductance, with magnitudes up to 4650 (nm{\cdot}{\mu}A/V2), 4620 (nm{\cdot}{\mu}A/V2 {\hbar}/2e), and 6450 (nm{\cdot}{\mu}A/V2 {\hbar}/e), respectively. Furthermore, the injection-currents, shift-spin-currents, and shift-orbital-currents can be readily switched via rotating the magnetizations of 2H-FeCl2. 32. False Geminates as an Effective Transitional Strategy for Cantonese Learners of Japanese

This article revisits Lee and Mok (2018) and examines how the Cantonese learners in the study produced second language (L2) Japanese short vs. long consonants which are absent in their first language (L1). Specifically, our goal is to find out whether these learners were substituting real geminates (i.e. long consonants) with the improvised strategy of an unreleased stop coda + homorganic initial consonant sequence (like in the phrase "cat tail"), which would not have been detectable with the durational ratios in the original study. We analysed the mean intensity of the words "sassa," "sesse," and "sosso," to investigate whether the learners were producing a [t]+/s/ cluster, presumably drawn from their L1. The results showed that the beginner group were indeed using this strategy, whereas the advanced learners were largely producing a genuinely geminated /s/ akin to the native speakers. The use of this transitional strategy was also speech-rate dependent, with more cases of /t/-insertion in slower speech for both learner groups. We conclude that (1) although having L1 false geminates does not enable beginners to readily acquire genuine L2 geminates, the latter can be learned after enough exposure, and (2) during this transition, Cantonese learners can draw on L1 phonotactic knowledge to improvise creative and effective strategies to attain L2 durational targets.

Abstract

The current collector, one of the main components in the manufacture of composite electrodes, is mainly used to enhance the mechanical stability and improve the performance and cycle performance of the electrodes. During the electrochemical reaction, the lithium diffusion can induce compressive stress and affect the mechanical performance, lifespan, and performance of batteries. Therefore, this study analyzed the influence of copper foil on the mechanical response and degradation performance of electrodes. In addition, a mathematical model was developed to analyze the effect of copper foil on the stress–strain behavior of the electrodes. The results indicated that the stress and modulus of the graphite electrodes have a non-linear increase with the lithiation process. Based on those findings, utilizing a thinner and more compliant current collector could effectively mitigate the in-plane strain and the stress within electrodes. Thus, developing a thinner and softer copper foil could simultaneously enhance the mechanical properties and specific density of composite electrodes for the next-generation LiBs. Abstract

Although substantial efforts have been made using graph neural networks (GNNs) for AI-driven drug discovery (AIDD), effective molecular representation learning remains an open challenge, especially in the case of insufficient labeled molecules. Recent studies suggest that big GNN models pre-trained by self-supervised learning on unlabeled datasets enable better transfer performance in downstream molecular property prediction tasks. However, the approaches in these studies require multiple complex self-supervised tasks and large-scale datasets, which are time-consuming, computationally expensive, and difficult to pre-train end-to-end. Here, we design a simple yet effective self-supervised strategy to simultaneously learn local and global information about molecules, and further propose a novel bi-branch masked graph transformer autoencoder (BatmanNet) to learn molecular representations. BatmanNet features two tailored complementary and asymmetric graph autoencoders to reconstruct the missing nodes and edges, respectively, from a masked molecular graph. With this design, BatmanNet can effectively capture the underlying structure and semantic information of molecules, thus improving the performance of molecular representation. 50. Effects of unicondylar and total knee arthroplasty on knee osteoarthritis

Abstract

Objective To compare the therapeutic effects of unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on knee osteoarthritis (KOA) to provide references for the clinical selection of the best surgical approach. Methods A total of 104 KOA patients who underwent knee arthroplasty at Shijiazhuang People's Hospital from February 2020 to February 2021 were selected. Patients were divided into three groups based on the classification and lesion location of KOA: unicompartment lesion group (36 cases, undergoing patellofemoral joint replacement or UKA), two compartments lesion group (35 cases, undergoing simultaneous two compartments knee arthroplasty), and three compartments lesion group (33 cases，undergoing TKA). The postoperative recovery of joint function was followed up for 18 months. The range of motion (ROM), American Knee Society Score clinical score, KSS functional score, Japanese Orthopedic Association Assessment (JOA) score of knee joint, and serum interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-7 levels of patients were compared among three groups before and after surgery. Results After surgery, the ROM score, KSS clinical score, and KSS functional score, and JOA score of knee joint function in the three groups increased compared to preoperative values, with those in unicompartment lesion group and two compartments lesion group being higher than in three compartments lesion group (P＜0.05). After surgery, the excellent and good rate in the unicompartment lesion group, the two compartments lesion group and the three compartments lesion group were 72.22%, 74.29% and 66.67%, respectiuely. There was no statistically significant difference in clinical efficacy among the three groups (χ2=0.510, P=0.774). After surgery, the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-7 in the three groups significantly decreased compared to preoperative levels, with those in unicompartment lesion group and two compartments lesion group being lower than three compartments lesion group (P＜0.05). Conclusion Both UKA and TKA can achieve good therapeutic effects in the treatment of KOA. Choosing the appropriate surgical approach based on the classification and lesion location of knee joint diseases can better promote the recovery of knee joint function and achieve better treatment results in KOA patients.
