Brain-inspired computing architectures attempt to emulate the computations performed in the neurons and the synapses in human brain. Memristors with continuously tunable resistances are ideal building blocks for artificial synapses. Through investigating the memristor behaviors in a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/BaTiO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 multiferroic tunnel junction, it was found that the ferroelectric domain dynamics characteristics are influenced by the relative magnetization alignment of the electrodes, and the interfacial spin polarization is manipulated continuously by ferroelectric domain reversal, enriching our understanding of the magnetoelectric coupling fundamentally. This creates a functionality that not only the resistance of the memristor but also the synaptic plasticity form can be further manipulated, as demonstrated by the spike-timing-dependent plasticity investigations. Density functional theory calculations are carried out to describe the obtained magnetoelectric coupling, which is probably related to the Mn-Ti intermixing at the interfaces. As large language models (LLMs) process increasing context windows, the memory usage of KV cache has become a critical bottleneck during inference. The mainstream KV compression methods, including KV pruning and KV quantization, primarily focus on either token or precision dimension and seldom explore the efficiency of their combination. In this paper, we comprehensively investigate the token-precision trade-off in KV cache compression. Experiments demonstrate that storing more tokens in the KV cache with lower precision, i.e., quantized pruning, can significantly enhance the long-context performance of LLMs. Furthermore, in-depth analysis regarding token-precision trade-off from a series of key aspects exhibit that, quantized pruning achieves substantial improvements in retrieval-related tasks and consistently performs well across varying input lengths. Moreover, quantized pruning demonstrates notable stability across different KV pruning methods, quantization strategies, and model scales. The evolution of the lunar magnetic field can reveal the Moon's interior structure, thermal history, and surface environment. The mid-to-late stage evolution of the lunar magnetic field is poorly constrained, and thus the existence of a long-lived lunar dynamo remains controversial. The Chang'e-5 mission returned the heretofore youngest mare basalts from Oceanus Procellarum uniquely positioned at mid-latitude. We recovered weak paleointensities of 2-4 uT from the Chang'e-5 basalt clasts at 2 billion years ago, attestting to the longevity of a lunar dynamo until at least the Moon's midlife. This paleomagnetic result implies the existence of thermal convection in the lunar deep interior at the lunar mid-stage which may have supplied mantle heat flux for the young volcanism.

Channel estimation and extrapolation are fundamental issues in MIMO communication systems. In this paper, we proposed the quasi-Newton orthogonal matching pursuit (QNOMP) approach to overcome these issues with high efficiency while maintaining accuracy. The algorithm consists of two stages on the super-resolution recovery: we first performed a cheap on-grid OMP estimation of channel parameters in the sparsity domain (e.g., delay or angle), then an off-grid optimization to achieve the super-resolution. In the off-grid stage, we employed the BFGS quasi-Newton method to jointly estimate the parameters through a multipath model, which improved the speed and accuracy significantly. Furthermore, we derived the optimal extrapolated solution in the linear minimum mean squared estimator criterion, revealed its connection with Slepian basis, and presented a practical algorithm to realize the extrapolation based on the QNOMP results. Special treatment utilizing the block sparsity nature of the considered channels was also proposed. Numerical experiments on the simulated models and CDL-C channels demonstrated the high performance and low computational complexity of QNOMP.

We proposed a novel dense line spectrum super-resolution algorithm, the DMRA, that leverages dynamical multi-resolution of atoms technique to address the limitation of traditional compressed sensing methods when handling dense point-source signals. The algorithm utilizes a smooth $\tanh$ relaxation function to replace the $\ell_0$ norm, promoting sparsity and jointly estimating the frequency atoms and complex gains. To reduce computational complexity and improve frequency estimation accuracy, a two-stage strategy was further introduced to dynamically adjust the number of the optimized degrees of freedom. The strategy first increases candidate frequencies through local refinement, then applies a sparse selector to eliminate insignificant frequencies, thereby adaptively adjusting the degrees of freedom to improve estimation accuracy. Theoretical analysis were provided to validate the proposed method for multi-parameter estimations. Computational results demonstrated that this algorithm achieves good super-resolution performance in various practical scenarios and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of frequency estimation accuracy and computational efficiency.

Prompt serves as a crucial link in interacting with large language models (LLMs), widely impacting the accuracy and interpretability of model outputs. However, acquiring accurate and high-quality responses necessitates precise prompts, which inevitably pose significant risks of personal identifiable information (PII) leakage. Therefore, this paper proposes DePrompt, a desensitization protection and effectiveness evaluation framework for prompt, enabling users to safely and transparently utilize LLMs. Specifically, by leveraging large model fine-tuning techniques as the underlying privacy protection method, we integrate contextual attributes to define privacy types, achieving high-precision PII entity identification. Additionally, through the analysis of key features in prompt desensitization scenarios, we devise adversarial generative desensitization methods that retain important semantic content while disrupting the link between identifiers and privacy attributes. Furthermore, we present utility evaluation metrics for prompt to better gauge and balance privacy and usability. Our framework is adaptable to prompts and can be extended to text usability-dependent scenarios. Through comparison with benchmarks and other model methods, experimental evaluations demonstrate that our desensitized prompt exhibit superior privacy protection utility and model inference results.

Implicit representation mapping (IRM) can translate image features to any continuous resolution, showcasing its potent capability for ultra-high-resolution image segmentation refinement. Current IRM-based methods for refining ultra-high-resolution image segmentation often rely on CNN-based encoders to extract image features and apply a Shared Implicit Representation Mapping Function (SIRMF) to convert pixel-wise features into segmented results. Hence, these methods exhibit two crucial limitations. Firstly, the CNN-based encoder may not effectively capture long-distance information, resulting in a lack of global semantic information in the pixel-wise features. Secondly, SIRMF is shared across all samples, which limits its ability to generalize and handle diverse inputs. To address these limitations, we propose a novel approach that leverages the newly proposed Adaptive Implicit Representation Mapping (AIRM) for ultra-high-resolution Image Segmentation. Specifically, the proposed method comprises two components: (1) the Affinity Empowered Encoder (AEE), a robust feature extractor that leverages the benefits of the transformer architecture and semantic affinity to model long-distance features effectively, and (2) the Adaptive Implicit Representation Mapping Function (AIRMF), which adaptively translates pixel-wise features without neglecting the global semantic information, allowing for flexible and precise feature translation. We evaluated our method on the commonly used ultra-high-resolution segmentation refinement datasets, i.e., BIG and PASCAL VOC 2012. The extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms competitors by a large margin. The code is provided in supplementary material.

Image inpainting aims to fill missing pixels in damaged images and has achieved significant progress with cut-edging learning techniques. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art inpainting methods are mainly designed for nature images and cannot correctly recover text within scene text images, and training existing models on the scene text images cannot fix the issues. In this work, we identify the visual-text inpainting task to achieve high-quality scene text image restoration and text completion: Given a scene text image with unknown missing regions and the corresponding text with unknown missing characters, we aim to complete the missing information in both images and text by leveraging their complementary information. Intuitively, the input text, even if damaged, contains language priors of the contents within the images and can guide the image inpainting. Meanwhile, the scene text image includes the appearance cues of the characters that could benefit text recovery. To this end, we design the cross-modal predictive interaction (CLII) model containing two branches, i.e., ImgBranch and TxtBranch, for scene text inpainting and text completion, respectively while leveraging their complementary effectively. Moreover, we propose to embed our model into the SOTA scene text spotting method and significantly enhance its robustness against missing pixels, which demonstrates the practicality of the newly developed task. To validate the effectiveness of our method, we construct three real datasets based on existing text-related datasets, containing 1838 images and covering three scenarios with curved, incidental, and styled texts, and conduct extensive experiments to show that our method outperforms baselines significantly.

Numerous renowned algorithms for tackling the compressed sensing problem employ an alternating strategy, which typically involves data matching in one module and denoising in another. Based on an in-depth analysis of the connection between the message passing and operator splitting, we present a novel approach, the Alternating Subspace Method (ASM), which intuitively combines the principles of the greedy methods (e.g., the orthogonal matching pursuit type methods) and the splitting methods (e.g., the approximate message passing type methods). Essentially, ASM modifies the splitting method by achieving fidelity in a subspace-restricted fashion. We reveal that such confining strategy still yields a consistent fixed point iteration and establish its local geometric convergence on the lasso problem. Numerical experiments on both the lasso and channel estimation problems demonstrate its high convergence rate and its capacity to incorporate different prior distributions. Further theoretical analysis also demonstrates the advantage of the motivated message-passing splitting by incorporating quasi-variance degree of freedom even for the classical lasso optimization problem. The emerging citation-based QA systems are gaining more attention especially in generative AI search applications. The importance of extracted knowledge provided to these systems is vital from both accuracy (completeness of information) and efficiency (extracting the information in a timely manner). In this regard, citation-based QA systems are suffering from two shortcomings. First, they usually rely only on web as a source of extracted knowledge and adding other external knowledge sources can hamper the efficiency of the system. Second, web-retrieved contents are usually obtained by some simple heuristics such as fixed length or breakpoints which might lead to splitting information into pieces. To mitigate these issues, we propose our enhanced web and efficient knowledge graph (KG) retrieval solution (EWEK-QA) to enrich the content of the extracted knowledge fed to the system. This has been done through designing an adaptive web retriever and incorporating KGs triples in an efficient manner. We demonstrate the effectiveness of EWEK-QA over the open-source state-of-the-art (SoTA) web-based and KG baseline models using a comprehensive set of quantitative and human evaluation experiments. Our model is able to: first, improve the web-retriever baseline in terms of extracting more relevant passages (>20\%), the coverage of answer span (>25\%) and self containment (>35\%); second, obtain and integrate KG triples into its pipeline very efficiently (by avoiding any LLM calls) to outperform the web-only and KG-only SoTA baselines significantly in 7 quantitative QA tasks and our human evaluation.

Integrating external knowledge into large language models (LLMs) presents a promising solution to overcome the limitations imposed by their antiquated and static parametric memory. Prior studies, however, have tended to over-reliance on external knowledge, underestimating the valuable contributions of an LLMs' intrinsic parametric knowledge. The efficacy of LLMs in blending external and parametric knowledge remains largely unexplored, especially in cases where external knowledge is incomplete and necessitates supplementation by their parametric knowledge. We propose to deconstruct knowledge fusion into four distinct scenarios, offering the first thorough investigation of LLM behavior across each. We develop a systematic pipeline for data construction and knowledge infusion to simulate these fusion scenarios, facilitating a series of controlled experiments. Our investigation reveals that enhancing parametric knowledge within LLMs can significantly bolster their capability for knowledge integration. Nonetheless, we identify persistent challenges in memorizing and eliciting parametric knowledge, and determining parametric knowledge boundaries. Domain wall bimerons (DWBMs) are nanoscale spin textures residing within the magnetic domain walls of in-plane magnets. In this study, we employ both numerical and analytical methods to explore the stabilization of N\'eel-type domain wall bimerons and their dynamics when excited by spin-orbit torque. Our findings reveal two unique and intriguing dynamic mechanisms, which depend on the polarization direction of the spin current: In the first scenario, the magnetic domain wall serves as a track that confines the motion of the bimeron and effectively suppresses the skyrmion Hall effect. In the second scenario, pushing the magnetic domain wall triggers a rapid sliding of the bimeron along the wall. This process significantly enhances the dynamics of the bimeron, resulting in a velocity increase of approximately 40 times compared to skyrmions and bimeron solitons. Recent studies reveal that local differential privacy (LDP) protocols are vulnerable to data poisoning attacks where an attacker can manipulate the final estimate on the server by leveraging the characteristics of LDP and sending carefully crafted data from a small fraction of controlled local clients. This vulnerability raises concerns regarding the robustness and reliability of LDP in hostile environments. In this paper, we conduct a systematic investigation of the robustness of state-of-the-art LDP protocols for numerical attributes, i.e., categorical frequency oracles (CFOs) with binning and consistency, and distribution reconstruction. We evaluate protocol robustness through an attack-driven approach and propose new metrics for cross-protocol attack gain measurement. The results indicate that Square Wave and CFO-based protocols in the Server setting are more robust against the attack compared to the CFO-based protocols in the User setting. Our evaluation also unfolds new relationships between LDP security and its inherent design choices. We found that the hash domain size in local-hashing-based LDP has a profound impact on protocol robustness beyond the well-known effect on utility. Further, we propose a zero-shot attack detection by leveraging the rich reconstructed distribution information. The experiment show that our detection significantly improves the existing methods and effectively identifies data manipulation in challenging scenarios.

First principle DFT simulations are employed to study structural and mechanical properties of orthorhombic B12-based metal carbide-borides. The simulations predict the existence of Ca- and Sr- based phases with the structure similar to that of experimentally observed earlier compound MeC$_2$B$_{12}$. Dynamical stability of both phases is demonstrated, and the phase MeC$_2$B$_{12}$ is found to be thermodynamically stable. According to simulations, Ca- and Sr- based phases have significantly enhanced mechanical characteristics, which suggest their potential application as superhard materials. It presents significant challenges to generate comprehensive and accurate Wikipedia articles for newly emerging events under a real-world scenario. Existing attempts fall short either by focusing only on short snippets or by using metrics that are insufficient to evaluate real-world scenarios. In this paper, we construct WIKIGENBENCH, a new benchmark consisting of 1,320 entries, designed to align with real-world scenarios in both generation and evaluation. For generation, we explore a real-world scenario where structured, full-length Wikipedia articles with citations are generated for new events using input documents from web sources. For evaluation, we integrate systematic metrics and LLM-based metrics to assess the verifiability, organization, and other aspects aligned with real-world scenarios. Based on this benchmark, we conduct extensive experiments using various models within three commonly used frameworks: direct RAG, hierarchical structure-based RAG, and RAG with a fine-tuned generation model. Experimental results show that hierarchical-based methods can generate more comprehensive content, while fine-tuned methods achieve better verifiability. Generative search engines have the potential to transform how people seek information online, but generated responses from existing large language models (LLMs)-backed generative search engines may not always be accurate. Nonetheless, retrieval-augmented generation exacerbates safety concerns, since adversaries may successfully evade the entire system by subtly manipulating the most vulnerable part of a claim. To this end, we propose evaluating the robustness of generative search engines in the realistic and high-risk setting, where adversaries have only black-box system access and seek to deceive the model into returning incorrect responses. Through a comprehensive human evaluation of various generative search engines, such as Bing Chat, PerplexityAI, and YouChat across diverse queries, we demonstrate the effectiveness of adversarial factual questions in inducing incorrect responses. Moreover, retrieval-augmented generation exhibits a higher susceptibility to factual errors compared to LLMs without retrieval. The present study introduces the knowledge-augmented generator, which is specifically designed to produce information that remains grounded in contextual knowledge, regardless of alterations in the context. Previous research has predominantly focused on examining hallucinations stemming from static input, such as in the domains of summarization or machine translation. However, our investigation delves into the faithfulness of generative question answering in the presence of dynamic knowledge. Our objective is to explore the existence of hallucinations arising from parametric memory when contextual knowledge undergoes changes, while also analyzing the underlying causes for their occurrence. In order to efficiently address this issue, we propose a straightforward yet effective measure for detecting such hallucinations. Intriguingly, our investigation uncovers that all models exhibit a tendency to generate previous answers as hallucinations. Large Language Models (LLMs) have succeeded remarkably in understanding long-form contents. However, exploring their capability for generating long-form contents, such as reports and articles, has been relatively unexplored and inadequately assessed by existing benchmarks. The prevalent evaluation methods, which predominantly rely on crowdsourcing, are recognized for their labor-intensive nature and lack of efficiency, whereas automated metrics, such as the ROUGE score, demonstrate discordance with human judgment criteria. In this paper, we propose ProxyQA, an innovative framework dedicated to assessing long-text generation. ProxyQA comprises in-depth human-curated meta-questions spanning various domains, each accompanied by specific proxy-questions with pre-annotated answers. LLMs are tasked to generate extensive content in response to these meta-questions, by engaging an evaluator and incorporating the generated texts as contextual background, ProxyQA assesses the generated content's quality through the evaluator's accuracy in addressing the proxy-questions. We examine multiple LLMs, emphasizing ProxyQA's demanding nature as a high-quality assessment tool. Human evaluation demonstrates that the proxy-question method is notably self-consistent and aligns closely with human evaluative standards. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) grounds Large Language Model (LLM) output by leveraging external knowledge sources to reduce factual hallucinations. However, prior work lacks a comprehensive evaluation of different language families, making it challenging to evaluate LLM robustness against errors in external retrieved knowledge. To overcome this, we establish NoMIRACL, a human-annotated dataset for evaluating LLM robustness in RAG across 18 typologically diverse languages. NoMIRACL includes both a non-relevant and a relevant subset. Queries in the non-relevant subset contain passages judged as non-relevant, whereas queries in the relevant subset include at least a single judged relevant passage. We measure relevance assessment using: (i) hallucination rate, measuring model tendency to hallucinate, when the answer is not present in passages in the non-relevant subset, and (ii) error rate, measuring model inaccuracy to recognize relevant passages in the relevant subset.In our work, we observe that most models struggle to balance the two capacities. Models such as LLAMA-2 and Orca-2 achieve over 88% hallucination rate on the non-relevant subset. Mistral and LLAMA-3 hallucinate less but can achieve up to a 74.9% error rate on the relevant subset. Overall, GPT-4 is observed to provide the best tradeoff on both subsets, highlighting future work necessary to improve LLM robustness. Implicit representation of an image can map arbitrary coordinates in the continuous domain to their corresponding color values, presenting a powerful capability for image reconstruction. Nevertheless, existing implicit representation approaches only focus on building continuous appearance mapping, ignoring the continuities of the semantic information across pixels. As a result, they can hardly achieve desired reconstruction results when the semantic information within input images is corrupted, for example, a large region misses. To address the issue, we propose to learn semantic-aware implicit representation (SAIR), that is, we make the implicit representation of each pixel rely on both its appearance and semantic information (\eg, which object does the pixel belong to). To this end, we propose a framework with two modules: (1) building a semantic implicit representation (SIR) for a corrupted image whose large regions miss. Given an arbitrary coordinate in the continuous domain, we can obtain its respective text-aligned embedding indicating the object the pixel belongs. (2) building an appearance implicit representation (AIR) based on the SIR. Given an arbitrary coordinate in the continuous domain, we can reconstruct its color whether or not the pixel is missed in the input. We validate the novel semantic-aware implicit representation method on the image inpainting task, and the extensive experiments demonstrate that our method surpasses state-of-the-art approaches by a significant margin.

Model poisoning attacks greatly jeopardize the application of federated learning (FL). The effectiveness of existing defenses is susceptible to the latest model poisoning attacks, leading to a decrease in prediction accuracy. Besides, these defenses are intractable to distinguish benign outliers from malicious gradients, which further compromises the model generalization. In this work, we propose a novel proactive defense named RECESS against model poisoning attacks. Different from the passive analysis in previous defenses, RECESS proactively queries each participating client with a delicately constructed aggregation gradient, accompanied by the detection of malicious clients according to their responses with higher accuracy. Furthermore, RECESS uses a new trust scoring mechanism to robustly aggregate gradients. Unlike previous methods that score each iteration, RECESS considers clients' performance correlation across multiple iterations to estimate the trust score, substantially increasing fault tolerance. Finally, we extensively evaluate RECESS on typical model architectures and four datasets under various settings. We also evaluated the defensive effectiveness against other types of poisoning attacks, the sensitivity of hyperparameters, and adaptive adversarial attacks. Experimental results show the superiority of RECESS in terms of reducing accuracy loss caused by the latest model poisoning attacks over five classic and two state-of-the-art defenses.

High temperature polymer-based dielectric capacitors are crucial for application in electronic power systems. However, the storage performance of conventional dielectrics polymer dramatically deteriorates due to the thermal breakdown under concurrent high temperatures and electric fields, and there are hardly reports on the causes of thermal breakdown from the aspects of the high temperature conduction loss and Joule heat dissipation. Herein, a combined strategy of crosslinking and compositing for polyimide-based nanocomposites is proposed, which minimizes the thermal breakdown by significantly inhibiting the high-temperature conduction loss and enhancing the high thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the rationale of the strategy was theoretically and experimentally verified from multiple perspectives. The charge-trapping effect is directly observed and quantitatively probed by Kelvin probe force microscopy with nano level resolution, indicating that the crosslinking network introduces local deep traps and effectively suppresses the charge transport. The thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites inhibits the high temperature thermal breakdown, which is confirmed by phase field simulations. Consequently, the optimized nanocomposites possess an ultra high discharge energy density(Ud) of 5.45 J/cm3 and 3.54 J/cm3 with a charge discharge efficiency, respectively, which outperforms the reported polyimide based dielectric nanocomposites. This work provides a scalable direction for high temperature polymer based capacitors with excellent performance.

This paper presents a CLIP-based unsupervised learning method for annotation-free multi-label image classification, including three stages: initialization, training, and inference. At the initialization stage, we take full advantage of the powerful CLIP model and propose a novel approach to extend CLIP for multi-label predictions based on global-local image-text similarity aggregation. To be more specific, we split each image into snippets and leverage CLIP to generate the similarity vector for the whole image (global) as well as each snippet (local). Then a similarity aggregator is introduced to leverage the global and local similarity vectors. Using the aggregated similarity scores as the initial pseudo labels at the training stage, we propose an optimization framework to train the parameters of the classification network and refine pseudo labels for unobserved labels. During inference, only the classification network is used to predict the labels of the input image. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art unsupervised methods on MS-COCO, PASCAL VOC 2007, PASCAL VOC 2012, and NUS datasets and even achieves comparable results to weakly supervised classification methods., Comment: Accepted in ICCV2023

In this work, we introduce a challenging image restoration task, referred to as SuperInpaint, which aims to reconstruct missing regions in low-resolution images and generate completed images with arbitrarily higher resolutions. We have found that this task cannot be effectively addressed by stacking state-of-the-art super-resolution and image inpainting methods as they amplify each other's flaws, leading to noticeable artifacts. To overcome these limitations, we propose the detail-enhanced attentional implicit representation (DEAR) that can achieve SuperInpaint with a single model, resulting in high-quality completed images with arbitrary resolutions. Specifically, we use a deep convolutional network to extract the latent embedding of an input image and then enhance the high-frequency components of the latent embedding via an adaptive high-pass filter. This leads to detail-enhanced semantic embedding. We further feed the semantic embedding into an unmask-attentional module that suppresses embeddings from ineffective masked pixels. Additionally, we extract a pixel-wise importance map that indicates which pixels should be used for image reconstruction. Given the coordinates of a pixel we want to reconstruct, we first collect its neighboring pixels in the input image and extract their detail-enhanced semantic embeddings, unmask-attentional semantic embeddings, importance values, and spatial distances to the desired pixel. Then, we feed all the above terms into an implicit representation and generate the color of the specified pixel. To evaluate our method, we extend three existing datasets for this new task and build 18 meaningful baselines using SOTA inpainting and super-resolution methods. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms all existing methods by a significant margin on four widely used metrics.

Dendrite core is the center point of the dendrite. The information of dendrite core is very helpful for material scientists to analyze the properties of materials. Therefore, detecting the dendrite core is a very important task in the material science field. Meanwhile, because of some special properties of the dendrites, this task is also very challenging. Different from the typical detection problems in the computer vision field, detecting the dendrite core aims to detect a single point location instead of the bounding-box. As a result, the existing regressing bounding-box based detection methods can not work well on this task because the calculated center point location based on the upper-left and lower-right corners of the bounding-box is usually not precise. In this work, we formulate the dendrite core detection problem as a segmentation task and proposed a novel detection method to detect the dendrite core directly. Our whole pipeline contains three steps: Easy Sample Detection (ESD), Hard Sample Detection(HSD), and Hard Sample Refinement (HSR). Specifically, ESD and HSD focus on the easy samples and hard samples of dendrite cores respectively. Both of them employ the same Central Point Detection Network (CPDN) but do not share parameters. To make HSD only focus on the feature of hard samples of dendrite cores, we destroy the structure of the easy samples of dendrites which are detected by ESD and force HSD to learn the feature of hard samples. HSR is a binary classifier which is used to filter out the false positive prediction of HSD. We evaluate our method on the dendrite dataset. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines on three metrics, i.e., Recall, Precision, and F-score.

Shadow removal is to restore shadow regions to their shadow-free counterparts while leaving non-shadow regions unchanged. State-of-the-art shadow removal methods train deep neural networks on collected shadow & shadow-free image pairs, which are desired to complete two distinct tasks via shared weights, i.e., data restoration for shadow regions and identical mapping for non-shadow regions. We find that these two tasks exhibit poor compatibility, and using shared weights for these two tasks could lead to the model being optimized towards only one task instead of both during the training process. Note that such a key issue is not identified by existing deep learning-based shadow removal methods. To address this problem, we propose to handle these two tasks separately and leverage the identical mapping results to guide the shadow restoration in an iterative manner. Specifically, our method consists of three components: an identical mapping branch (IMB) for non-shadow regions processing, an iterative de-shadow branch (IDB) for shadow regions restoration based on identical results, and a smart aggregation block (SAB). The IMB aims to reconstruct an image that is identical to the input one, which can benefit the restoration of the non-shadow regions without explicitly distinguishing between shadow and non-shadow regions. Utilizing the multi-scale features extracted by the IMB, the IDB can effectively transfer information from non-shadow regions to shadow regions progressively, facilitating the process of shadow removal. The SAB is designed to adaptive integrate features from both IMB and IDB. Moreover, it generates a finely tuned soft shadow mask that guides the process of removing shadows. Extensive experiments demonstrate our method outperforms all the state-of-the-art shadow removal approaches on the widely used shadow removal datasets.
