Due to the scarcity of rock samples, the Hadean Era predating 4 billion years ago (Ga) poses challenges in understanding geological processes like subaerial weathering and plate tectonics that are critical for the evolution of life. The Jack Hills zircon from Western Australia, the primary Hadean samples available, offer valuable insights into magma sources and tectonic genesis through trace element signatures. However, a consensus on these signatures has not been reached. To address this, we developed a machine learning classifier capable of deciphering the geochemical fingerprints of zircon. This allowed us to identify the oldest detrital zircon originating from sedimentary-derived S-type granites. Our results indicate the presence of S-type granites as early as 4.24 Ga, persisting throughout the Hadean into the Archean. Examining global detrital zircon across Earths history reveals consistent supercontinent-like cycles from the present back to the Hadean. These findings suggest that a significant amount of Hadean continental crust was exposed, weathered into sediments, and incorporated into the magma sources of Jack Hills zircon. Only the early operation of both subaerial weathering and plate subduction can account for the prevalence of S-type granites we observe. Additionally, the periodic evolution of S-type granite proportions implies that subduction-driven tectonic cycles were active during the Hadean, at least around 4.2 Ga. The evidence thus points toward an early Earth resembling the modern Earth in terms of active tectonics and habitable surface conditions. This suggests the potential for life to originate in environments like warm ponds rather than extreme hydrothermal settings.

The rise of complex macroscopic life occurred during the Ediacaran Period, an interval that witnessed large-scale disturbances to biogeochemical systems. The current Ediacaran chronostratigraphic framework is of insufficient resolution to provide robust global correlation schemes or test hypotheses for the role of biogeochemical cycling in the evolution of complex life. Here, we present new radio-isotopic dates from Ediacaran strata that directly constrain key fossil assemblages and large-magnitude carbon cycle perturbations. These new dates and integrated global correlations demonstrate that late Ediacaran strata of South China are time transgressive and that the 575- to 550-Ma interval is marked by two large negative carbon isotope excursions: the Shuram and a younger one that ended ca. 550 Ma ago. These data calibrate the tempo of Ediacaran evolution characterized by intervals of tens of millions of years of increasing ecosystem complexity, interrupted by biological turnovers that coincide with large perturbations to the carbon cycle.

It has been proposed that all L chondrites resulted from an ongoing collisional cascade of fragments that originated from the formation of the ~500 Ma old asteroid family Gefion, located near the 5:2 mean-motion resonance with Jupiter in the middle Main Belt. If so, L chondrite pre-atmospheric orbits should be distributed as expected for that source region. Here, we present contradictory results from the orbit and collisional history of the October 24, 2015, L6 ordinary chondrite fall at Creston, CA (here reclassified to L5/6). Creston's short 1.30 ± 0.02 AU semimajor axis orbit would imply a long dynamical evolution if it originated from the middle Main Belt. Indeed, Creston has a high cosmic ray exposure age of 40–50 Ma. However, Creston's small meteoroid size and low 4.23 ± 0.07° inclination indicate a short dynamical lifetime against collisions. This suggests, instead, that Creston originated most likely in the inner asteroid belt and was delivered via the ν 6 resonance. The U-Pb systematics of Creston apatite reveals a Pb-Pb age of 4,497.1 ± 3.7 Ma, and an upper intercept U-Pb age of 4,496.7 ± 5.8 Ma (2σ), circa 70 Ma after formation of CAI, as found for other L chondrites. The K-Ar (age ~4.3 Ga) and U,Th-He (age ~1 Ga) chronometers were not reset at ~500 Ma, while the lower intercept U-Pb age is poorly defined as 770 ± 320 Ma. So far, the three known L chondrites that impacted on orbits with semimajor axes a 3 Ga) K-Ar ages. This argues for a source of some of our L chondrites in the inner Main Belt. Not all L chondrites originate in a continuous population of Gefion family debris stretching across the 3:1 mean-motion resonance.

Accurately determining the timing of hydrothermal mineralization for sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits is difficult because of a lack of both suitable chronometers and in situ techniques with the required spatial resolution and precision. The lack of precise age determinations on gold deposits has hindered understanding of their genesis and relation to the geodynamic setting. The Qiuling-Jinlongshan deposit is a typical SHDG deposit located in the eastern South Qinling Orogen (SQO), with 109 t Au at an average grade of 6.17 g/t. Devonian and Carboniferous metasedimentary rocks host structurally controlled gold mineralization, which is associated with silica-carbonate alteration. Pyrite, arsenopyrite, and arsenian pyrite are major gold carriers, and gold also occurs as native gold grains and invisible gold in the sulfides. In this study, the well-defined hydrothermal overgrowth rims (~2 μm) of single monazite grains, associated with disseminated auriferous arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite in low-grade metasedimentary rocks, yield U-Pb ages of239 ± 13 Ma (2σ) by high spatial resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The hydrothermal monazites are cogenetic to the primary gold mineralization where they are closely associated with gold-bearing sulfides. This new age implies that the early to middle Triassic mineralization event in the eastern SQO was related to the Triassic tectonic transition from compression to transpression in the Qinling Orogen after the closure of the Mianlue Ocean. This study highlights the 2-μm high spatial resolution SIMS monazite U-Th-Pb dating method as a powerful tool for determining the timing of SHDG deposits worldwide. With the development of the steel industry, China's demand for niobium is increasing. However, domestic niobium resources are not yet stably supplied and are heavily dependent on imports from abroad (nearly 100%). It is urgent to develop domestic niobium resources. The Bayan Obo deposit is the largest rare earth element deposit in the world and contains a huge amount of niobium resources. However, the niobium resource has not been exploited due to the fine-grained size and heterogeneous and scattered occurrences of Nb minerals. To promote the utilization of niobium resources in the Bayan Obo deposit, we focused on the mineralogical and geochemical characterization of six types of ores and mineral processing samples from the Bayan Obo deposit, using optical microscopes, EPMA, TIMA, and LA–ICP–MS. Our results show that: (1) the niobium mineral compositions are complex, with the main Nb minerals including aeschynite group minerals, columbite–(Fe), fluorcalciopyrochlore, Nb–bearing rutile, baotite, fergusonite–(Y), fersmite, and a small amount of samarskite–(Y). Aeschynite group minerals, columbite–(Fe), and fluorcalciopyrochlore are the main niobium-carrying minerals and should be the primary focus of industrial recycling and utilization. Based on mineralogical and geochemical investigation, the size of the aeschynite group minerals is large enough for mineral processing. Aeschynite group minerals are thus a significant potential recovery target for niobium, as well as for medium–heavy REE resources. The Nb–rich aegirine-type ores with aeschynite group mineral megacrysts are suggested to be the most significant niobium resource for mineral processing and prospecting. Combined with geological features, mining, and mineral processing, niobium beneficiation efforts of aeschynite group minerals are crucial for making breakthroughs in the utilization of niobium resources at the Bayan Obo.
