Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. We report the creation of dual-species Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of $^{7}$Li and $^{133}$Cs. These BECs are formed in a bichromatic optical dipole trap created with 1550-nm and 780-nm laser beams. During the production process, an external magnetic field of 886~G is applied to adjust the scattering lengths to $a_{\rm{Cs}} = 123a_0$, $a_{\rm{Li}} = 484a_0$, and $a_{\rm{LiCs}} = 248a_0$. These scattering lengths allow for efficient evaporation and sympathetic cooling. The dual-species BECs are typically produced with $1.5\times 10^4$ Cs atoms and $6.0\times 10^3$ Li atoms. This quantum degenerate mixture of Li and Cs provides an ideal platform for exploring phenomena such as polarons and Efimov trimers, as well as for creating ground-state LiCs molecules., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We present a study of interspecies Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{7}$Li-$^{133}$Cs Bose-Bose mixtures. We locate ten interspecies resonances in three different spin-state combinations. By comparing to coupled-channel calculations, we assign six of the resonances to $s$-wave channels and the rest to $p$-wave channels. We use the $s$-wave resonances to refine the ground-state potentials of LiCs in the coupled-channel calculations and then obtain an accurate characterization of the scattering and bound-state properties of the mixtures. We present the creation of a lithium-cesium slow beam using a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap. The two-species atomic beam is directed to load a three-dimensional magneto-optical trap in ultrahigh vacuum. We achieve a loading rate of 1.3$\times$10$^{7}$ lithium atoms/s with the lithium oven temperature at 370~$^{\circ}$C and 2.2$\times$10$^{7}$ cesium atoms/s with the Cs oven temperature at 20~$^{\circ}$C. The maximum numbers of lithium and cesium atoms in the trap are 1.0$\times$10$^{9}$ and 1.4$\times$10$^{8}$, respectively. Our results show that the simple and compact two-dimensional magneto-optical trap is suitable for producing an atomic beam of two species that have a large mass ratio and very different volatilities., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

GRANDMA is an international project that coordinates telescope observations of transient sources with large localization uncertainties. Such sources include gravitational wave events, gamma-ray bursts and neutrino events. GRANDMA currently coordinates 25 telescopes (70 scientists), with the aim of optimizing the imaging strategy to maximize the probability of identifying an optical counterpart of a transient source. SN 2018hti is a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN~I) with an absolute $g$-band magnitude of $-22.2$ at maximum brightness, discovered in a metal-poor galaxy at a redshift of 0.0612. We present extensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of this supernova, covering the phases from $\sim -35$ days to more than +340 days from the $r$-band maximum. Combining our $BVgri$-band photometry with {\it Swift} UVOT optical/ultraviolet photometry, we calculated the peak luminosity as $\sim 3.5\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Modeling the observed light curve reveals that the luminosity evolution of SN 2018hti can be produced by an ejecta mass of 5.8 $M_\odot$ and a magnetar with a magnetic field of $B=1.8\times10^{13}$~G having an initial spin period of $P_0=1.8$ ms. Based on such a magnetar-powered scenario and a larger sample, a correlation between the spin of the magnetar and the kinetic energy of the ejecta can be inferred for most SLSNe~I, suggesting a self-consistent scenario. Like for other SLSNe~I, the host galaxy of SN 2018hti is found to be relatively faint ($M_{g} = -17.75$ mag) and of low metallicity ($Z=0.3~Z_\odot$), with a star-formation rate of 0.3 $M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. According to simulation results of single-star evolution, SN 2018hti could originate from a massive, metal-poor star with a zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) mass of 25--40 $M_\odot$, or from a less massive rotating star with $M_\mathrm{ZAMS} \approx 16$--25 $M_\odot$. GRANDMA is a network of 25 telescopes of different sizes, including both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. The network aims to coordinate follow-up observations of gravitational-wave candidate alerts, especially those with large localisation uncertainties, to reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. In this paper, we detail GRANDMA's observational performance during Advanced LIGO/Advanced Virgo Observing Run 3 (O3), focusing on the second part of O3; this includes summary statistics pertaining to coverage and possible astrophysical origin of the candidates. To do so, we quantify our observation efficiency in terms of delay between gravitational-wave candidate trigger time, observations, and the total coverage. Using an optimised and robust coordination system, GRANDMA followed-up about 90 % of the gravitational-wave candidate alerts, i.e. 49 out of 56 candidates. This led to coverage of over 9000 deg2 during O3. The delay between the gravitational-wave candidate trigger and the first observation was below 1.5 hour for 50 % of the alerts. We did not detect any electromagnetic counterparts to the gravitational-wave candidates during O3, likely due to the very large localisation areas (on average thousands of degrees squares) and relatively large distance of the candidates (above 200 Mpc for 60 % of BNS candidates). We derive constraints on potential kilonova properties for two potential binary neutron star coalescences (GW190425 and S200213t), assuming that the events' locations were imaged., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures

The combination of microstructures and mixed wettability for enhancing nucleate boiling has attracted much attention in recent years. However, in the existing experimental and numerical studies, the tops of microstructures are entirely subjected to wettability modification, which makes the influences of mixed wettability dependant on the characteristic length of microstructures. In order to disclose the joint effects of surface structure and mixed wettability on nucleate boiling, in this work we propose an improved type of pillar-textured surface with mixed wettability, in which the tops of square pillars are partially subjected to wettability modification. Numerical investigation of the boiling heat transfer performance on the improved mixed-wettability surface is carried out using a three-dimensional thermal multiphase lattice Boltzmann model. The numerical results show that the width of the wettability-modified region plays an important role in the boiling performance of the improved mixed-wettability surface and the best boiling performance is achieved in the situation that the width of the wettability-modified region is sufficiently large but the bubble nucleated on the pillar top still does not interfere with the coalescence-departure mechanism of the bubbles nucleated around the pillar, which optimizes the joint effects of surface structure and mixed wettability for enhancing nucleate boiling. We present the Global Rapid Advanced Network Devoted to the Multi-messenger Addicts (GRANDMA). The network consists of 21 telescopes with both photometric and spectroscopic facilities. They are connected together thanks to a dedicated infrastructure. The network aims at coordinating the observations of large sky position estimates of transient events to enhance their follow-up and reduce the delay between the initial detection and the optical confirmation. The GRANDMA program mainly focuses on follow-up of gravitational-wave alerts to find and characterise the electromagnetic counterpart during the third observational campaign of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. But it allows for any follow-up of transient alerts involving neutrinos or gamma-ray bursts, even with poor spatial localisation. We present the different facilities, tools, and methods we developed for this network, and show its efficiency using observations of LIGO/Virgo S190425z, a binary neutron star merger candidate. We furthermore report on all GRANDMA follow-up observations performed during the first six months of the LIGO-Virgo observational campaign, and we derive constraints on the kilonova properties assuming that the events' locations were imaged by our telescopes., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

We present extensive ultraviolet (UV) and optical photometry, as well as dense optical spectroscopy for type II Plateau (IIP) supernova SN 2016X that exploded in the nearby ($\sim$ 15 Mpc) spiral galaxy UGC 08041. The observations span the period from 2 to 180 days after the explosion; in particular, the Swift UV data probably captured the signature of shock breakout associated with the explosion of SN 2016X. It shows very strong UV emission during the first week after explosion, with contribution of $\sim$ 20 -- 30% to the bolometric luminosity (versus $\lesssim$ 15% for normal SNe IIP). Moreover, we found that this supernova has an unusually long rise time of about 12.6 $\pm$ 0.5 days in the $R$ band (versus $\sim$ 7.0 days for typical SNe IIP). The optical light curves and spectral evolution are quite similar to the fast-declining type IIP object SN 2013ej, except that SN 2016X has a relatively brighter tail. Based on the evolution of photospheric temperature as inferred from the $Swift$ data in the early phase, we derive that the progenitor of SN 2016X has a radius of about 930 $\pm$ 70 R$_{\odot}$. This large-size star is expected to be a red supergiant star with an initial mass of $\gtrsim$ 19 -- 20 M$_{\odot}$ based on the mass $--$ radius relation of the Galactic red supergiants, and it represents one of the most largest and massive progenitors found for SNe IIP., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS accepted

Ott et al. (Science (340, 716 (2013)) successfully transferred Fano profile into Lorentzian lineshape using an intense infrared laser, after excitation of autoionizing states in helium by attosecond XUV pulse. This is a very important step forward of quantum phase control. However, here we show experimentally that an autoionizing state can have both Fano and Lorentzian behavior naturally, depending on the process involved. This study utilized the inverse process of photon absorption ionization, i.e. electron ion recombination with photon emission, making sure the resonant autoionizing state is not perturbed by the laser fields. Our result implies that excitation of the state through different paths can lead to different Fano profiles for the same resonant state. This allows more options for the combination of laser fields and lead to more opportunities for quantum phase control. Due to their graphene-like properties after oxygen reduction, incorporation of graphene oxide (GO) sheets into correlated-electron materials offers a new pathway for tailoring their properties. Fabricating GO nanocomposites with polycrystalline MgB2 superconductors leads to an order of magnitude enhancement of the supercurrent at 5 K/8 T and 20 K/4 T. Herein, we introduce a novel experimental approach to overcome the formidable challenge of performing quantitative microscopy and microanalysis of such composites, so as to unveil how GO doping influences the structure and hence the material properties. Atom probe microscopy and electron microscopy were used to directly image the GO within the MgB2, and we combined these data with computational simulations to derive the property-enhancing mechanisms. Our results reveal synergetic effects of GO, namely, via localized atomic (carbon and oxygen) doping as well as texturing of the crystals, which provide both inter and intra granular flux pinning. This study opens up new insights into how low-dimensional nanostructures can be integrated into composites to modify the overall properties, using a methodology amenable to a wide range of applications.

A first-principles study has been carried out to evaluate the electronic and optical properties of rutile Ti1-xCdxO2 as a possible photocatalytic material. It was found that Cd incorporation lead to the enhancement of p states in the top of valence band and the decrease of band gap. The optical transition between Cd p and O p enhances gradually and shifts to high energy range with increasing Cd concentration. A first-principles study has been performed to evaluate the electronic and optical properties of wurtzite Zn1-xCdxO up to x=0.25. We have employed the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) form of generalized gradient approximation within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). Calculations have been carried out in different configurations. With the increasing Cd concentrations, the band gap of Zn1-xCdxO is decreased due to the increase of s states in conduction band. The results of imaginary part of dielectric function indicate that the optical transition between O 2p states in the highest valence band and Zn 4s states in the lowest conduction band has shifted to low energy range as the Cd concentrations increase. Besides, the optical band gap decreases from 3.2 to 2.84 eV with increasing Cd concentrations from 0 to 0.25. Meanwhile, the bowing parameter b, which has been obtained by fitting the results of optical band gap, is about 1.21 eV. Systematic magnetic measurements have been performed in unique$\alpha - MnO_2$ square nanotubes synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with microwave-assisted procedures. Unusual magnetic phenomena (abnormal magnetization verse temperature (M - T) behaviour, large and abnormal magnetization hysteresis loop horizontal shift (HHS) verse cooling field (HFC) behaviours (HHS - HFC) has been observed in these square nanotubes. These suggest the observation of large unfrozen orbital moment which also is the micro -original of observed large and abnormal horizontal shift (HHS). The findings demonstrated that engineering layered structures in nanoscale would create many unique nanostructures and unusual physicochemical behaviours., Comment: 23 Pgs, 10 Figs

A series of MnO2 unique nanostructures were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method with microwave-assisted procedures. A novel nanostructure formation mechanism has been proposed, that MnO6 octahedral nuclei and molecular layers can be rearranged into different nanostructured morphologies by restacking and splitting, and then clasping, which is associated with tunnel structure phase transformation. Systematic macrostructure observations and magnetic property measurements have been conducted on these nanostructures, which demonstrate that engineering layered structures has the potential to create many unique nanostructures and unusual physicochemical behaviours., Comment: 15 Pgs, 7 Figs

This paper presents synthesis methods and multifunctional properties of porous Co3O4 nanoplatelets and nanowires. Surprisingly, significantly superior Li-ion battery performance compared to other cathode materials is exhibited in the same samples as room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM). Microstructure observations, and properties measurements and analysis indicate that the as-prepared Co3O4 nanostructures exhibit a spontaneous transformation of their morphology, showing a predominantly {110} plane orientation and preferentially presenting the Co3+ species at the surface at appreciate preparation condition. More Co3+ in an octahedral (O) position exposed on the surface is associated with more Co3+ being Co3+|\cdot (Co3+ with trapped charge carriers) or reduced to Co2+ in the O position due to surface defects or oxygen vacancies, which is possibly the mechanism of excellent electric transport properties then high Li-battery performance; at the same time, reduced to Co2+ or free charge carriers trapped by Co3+|\cdot in the O position are the role of charge carries- mediate ferromagnetism, may be the origin of RTFM as well. Local fluctuations in the distribution of dopant atoms are a suspected cause of nanoscale electronic disorder or phase separation observed within the pnictide superconductors. Atom probe tomography results present the first direct observations of dopant nano-clustering in a K-doped 122-phase pnictides. First-principles calculations suggest the coexistence of static magnetism and superconductivity on a lattice parameter length scale over a large range of doping concentrations. Three first order magnetic phase transitions (FOMT) have been detected at TCPr, TNinter and TCinter over the temperature range from 5 K to 340 K at fields up to 9 T in PrMn1.4Fe0.6Ge2, and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) around these transitions evaluated. The MCE of two FOMT from planar antiferromagnetism (AFl) to c-axis ferromagnetism (Fmc) around 168 K, and from the Fmc state to the c-axis AFmc state around 157 K have acceptable values compared with those of existing MCE systems. A giant magnetocaloric effect (GMCE) has been observed around 25.5 K associated with the field-induced FOMT from the AFmc to the Fmc+F(Pr) state with an additional Pr magnetic contribution. The MCE value 29.1 J/kg K with field change 7 T is comparable to and even larger than reported values for the best-performed MCE materials. In particular, the giant MCE value of 12.3 J/kg K obtained for the relatively small field change from 0 to 1 T is very beneficial for applications, and this, together with the small magnetic and thermal hysteresis, suggests that PrMn1.4Fe0.6Ge2 may be a promising candidate for magnetic refrigeration applications in the hydrogen liquefication temperature range.

Strain engineering has been used to modify materials properties in ferroelectric, superconducting, and ferromagnetic thin films. The advantage of strain engineering is that it can achieve unexpected enhancement in certain properties, such as an increase in ferroelectric critical temperature, Tc, by 300 to 500K, with a minimum detrimental effect on the intrinsic properties of the material. The strain engineering has been largely applied to the materials in thin film form, where the strain is generated as a result of lattice mismatch between the substrate and component film or between layers in multilayer structures. Here, we report the observation of residual thermal stress/strain in dense SiC-MgB2 superconductor composites prepared by a diffusion method. We demonstrate that the thermal strain caused by the different thermal expansion coefficients between the MgB2 and SiC phases is responsible for the significant improvement in the critical current density, Jc, the irreversibility field, Hirr, and the upper critical field, Hc2, in the SiC-MgB2 composite where the carbon substitution level is low. In contrast to the common practice of improving the Jc and Hc2 of MgB2 through chemical substitution, by taking advantage of residual thermal strains we are able to design a composite, which shows only a small drop in Tc and little increase in resistivity, but a significant improvement over the Jc and Hc2 of MgB2. The present findings open up a new direction for manipulation of materials properties through strain engineering for materials in various forms.
