7. Experimental Study on the Horizontal Bearing Characteristic of a Strip-Walled Underground Diaphragm Wall.

Abstract

Researching and developing a new type of diaphragm wall foundation can solve the probl em that the traditional diaphragm wall structure may not meet the high standards of safety and stability of underground structures in some specific engineering environments. This paper focuses on the horizontal bearing characteristic of a new form of foundation, a strip-walled underground diaphragm wall, through a series of model tests. In the tests, nine plexiglass models with different section sizes, wall spacings and wall heights, as well as loading strategies (horizontal loads along and against the wall in the model), were conducted. The influence of the above factors on the horizontal bearing performance of the foundation and the soil resistance distribution around the wall was studied. The results show that when the horizontal load applied along the wall is greater than 50 N, the growth rate of total displacement at the top of the wall gradually decreases; when a horizontal load is applied against the wall, with a uniform change in wall height, the optimal wall spacing is 11 cm. When the same displacement occurs, the bearing performance of the model under the former loading strategy is generally 10% higher than that under the later loading strategy. In addition, the depth where the maximum bending moment along the wall occurred gradually moves downward with the increase in horizontal load, and the increase in wall spacing and wall height has a positive effect on the horizontal bearing characteristic. With the application of load, the maximum bending moment of the wall will gradually decrease along the depth. The increase in wall spacing and wall height can improve the overall flexural stiffness and horizontal bearing performance of the foundation. Lastly, the group wall effect coefficient, β, is put forward, and a simplified formula for calculating the horizontal bearing capacity of a strip wall foundation is proposed. In the formula, β is negatively correlated with the buried depth of the wall and positively correlated with the distance between the walls, and its coefficient is greater than 1. Abstract

Esophageal cancer (EC) is a prevalent malignancy associated with therapeutic resistance and poor prognosis. This study investigates the role of programmed death‐ligand 1 (PD‐L1) in esophageal cancer stem cell (ECSC) formation. ECSCs were enriched and characterized using various assays. We found that both PD‐L1 and bromodomain‐containing protein 4 (BRD4) were upregulated in ECSCs, promoting their stemness. Inhibiting BRD4 suppressed ECSC markers expression and sphere formation. Furthermore, BRD4 inhibitors downregulated membrane and nuclear PD‐L1 levels, with knockdown of PD‐L1 inhibiting ECSC formation. PD‐L1 degraders also affected PD‐L1 and its downstream effector RelB expression. Moreover, inhibiting RelB influenced sphere formation through interleukin‐6 expression. This study reveals the critical role of the BRD4/nuclear PD‐L1/RelB axis in ECSC formation, highlighting nuclear PD‐L1 as a potential immunotherapeutic target for refractory EC. Abstract

Purpose: Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizers in croplands induces serious N pollution and environmental consequences. Nitrification is the primary driver of soil acidification, leading to the consumption of soil inorganic carbon (C) and massive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from calcareous soils. Previous studies have shown that N fertilizer with nitrification inhibitors (NIs) can reduce CO2 emissions; however, the underlying mechanisms and factors influencing these reductions remain unclear. Materials and methods: We conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis under different experimental types (incubation and field experiments). The effect of NI amendment on soil CO2 emissions was investigated using data from 57 peer-reviewed scientific articles (172 paired observations), and a machine learning model was used to identify the primary factors influencing this process. Results and discussion: The addition of NIs significantly reduced the CO2 emissions by 19.19% and 7.97% under the incubation and field experimental scenarios, respectively. NIs applied to soils with high pH, low soil organic carbon and total nitrogen content, and coarse texture could mitigate soil CO2 emissions under both the experimental types. CO2 emissions can be considerably reduced by using 3,4-dimethyl pyrazole phosphate (DMPP) or NIs amended with urea or by adopting an N subsurface or single-dose application method. Conclusions: NI amendment has a high potential to reduce the CO2 emissions during N fertilization, and a suitable NI product, soil conditions, and fertilization regimes should be considered to further improve its efficacy. 15. A Meta-Analysis Study on the Use of Biochar to Simultaneously Mitigate Emissions of Reactive Nitrogen Gases (N 2 O and NO) from Soils.

Abstract

Nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO) are detrimental reactive gaseous oxides of nitrogen. Excessive application of nitrogen fertilizers in cropping systems has significantly increased the emissions of these gases, causing adverse environmental consequences. Previous studies have demonstrated that biochar amendment can regulate soil-N dynamics and mitigate N losses, but they lacked simultaneous assessments of soil N2O and NO emissions. Thus, the factors influencing the emissions of nitrogen oxides are still unclear. Therefore, this study examined the impact of biochar application on simultaneous N2O and NO emissions based on 18 peer-reviewed papers (119 paired observations). A machine learning model (boosted regression tree model) was adopted to assess the potential influencing factors, such as soil properties, biochar characteristics, and field management conditions. The addition of biochar reduced N2O and NO emissions by 16.2% and 14.7%, respectively. Biochar with a high total carbon content and pH, from woody or herbaceous feedstock, pyrolyzed at a high temperature, applied at a moderate rate and to soil with a high-silt content, a moderate pH, and coarse texture, could simultaneously reduce soil N2O and NO emissions. Biochar amendment, thus, has the potential to lower the environmental impact of crop production.
