The size of the Hamming distance spectrum of a code has received great attention in recent research. The main objective of this paper is to extend these significant theories to the $b$-symbol distance spectrum. We examine this question for various types of codes, including unrestricted codes, additive codes, linear codes, and cyclic codes, successively. For the first three cases, we determine the maximum size of the $b$-symbol distance spectra of these codes smoothly. For the case of cyclic codes, we introduce three approaches to characterize the upper bound for the cardinality of the $b$-symbol weight spectrum of cyclic codes, namely the period distribution approach, the primitive idempotent approach, and the $b$-symbol weight formula approach. As two by-products of this paper, the maximum number of symplectic weights of linear codes is determined, and a basic inequality among the parameters $[n,k,d_H(\C)]_q$ of cyclic codes is provided.

The existence of $q$-ary linear complementary pairs (LCPs) of codes with $q> 2$ has been completely characterized so far. This paper gives a characterization for the existence of binary LCPs of codes. As a result, we solve an open problem proposed by Carlet $et~al.$ (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 65(3): 1694-1704, 2019) and a conjecture proposed by Choi $et~al.$ (Cryptogr. Commun. 15(2): 469-486, 2023).

Determining the weight distribution of a code is an old and fundamental topic in coding theory that has been thoroughly studied. In 1977, Helleseth, Kl{\o}ve, and Mykkeltveit presented a weight enumerator polynomial of the lifted code over $\mathbb{F}_{q^\ell}$ of a $q$-ary linear code with significant combinatorial properties, which can determine the support weight distribution of this linear code. The Solomon-Stiffler codes are a family of famous Griesmer codes, which were proposed by Solomon and Stiffler in 1965. In this paper, we determine the weight enumerator polynomials of the lifted codes of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes using some combinatorial properties of subspaces. As a result, we determine the support weight distributions of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes. In this work, we propose two criteria for linear codes obtained from the Plotkin sum construction being symplectic self-orthogonal (SO) and linear complementary dual (LCD). As specific constructions, several classes of symplectic SO codes with good parameters including symplectic maximum distance separable codes are derived via $\ell$-intersection pairs of linear codes and generalized Reed-Muller codes. Also symplectic LCD codes are constructed from general linear codes. Furthermore, we obtain some binary symplectic LCD codes, which are equivalent to quaternary trace Hermitian additive complementary dual codes that outperform best-known quaternary Hermitian LCD codes reported in the literature. In addition, we prove that symplectic SO and LCD codes obtained in these ways are asymptotically good.

Few-weight codes over finite chain rings are associated with combinatorial objects such as strongly regular graphs (SRGs), strongly walk-regular graphs (SWRGs) and finite geometries, and are also widely used in data storage systems and secret sharing schemes. The first objective of this paper is to characterize all possible parameters of Plotkin-optimal two-homogeneous weight regular projective codes over finite chain rings, as well as their weight distributions. We show the existence of codes with these parameters by constructing an infinite family of two-homogeneous weight codes. The parameters of their Gray images have the same weight distribution as that of the two-weight codes of type SU1 in the sense of Calderbank and Kantor (Bull Lond Math Soc 18: 97-122, 1986). Further, we also construct three-homogeneous weight regular projective codes over finite chain rings combined with some known results. Finally, we study applications of our constructed codes in secret sharing schemes and graph theory. In particular, infinite families of SRGs and SWRGs with non-trivial parameters are obtained.

The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, we characterize the existence of binary self-orthogonal codes meeting the Griesmer bound by employing Solomon-Stiffler codes and some related residual codes. Second, using such a characterization, we determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,7)$ except for five special cases and the exact value of $d_{so}(n,8)$ except for 41 special cases, where $d_{so}(n,k)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all binary self-orthogonal $[n, k]$ codes. Currently, the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ $(k \le 6)$ was determined by Shi et al. (2022). Linear codes with small hulls over finite fields have been extensively studied due to their practical applications in computational complexity and information protection. In this paper, we develop a general method to determine the exact value of $D_4^H(n,k,1)$ for $n\leq 12$ or $k\in \{1,2,3,n-1,n-2,n-3\}$, where $D_4^H(n,k,1)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all quaternary linear $[n,k]$ codes with one-dimensional Hermitian hull. As a consequence, we solve a conjecture proposed by Mankean and Jitman on the largest minimum distance of a quaternary linear code with one-dimensional Hermitian hull. As an application, we construct some binary entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) from quaternary linear codes with one-dimensional Hermitian hull. The hull of a linear code over finite fields is the intersection of the code and its dual, and linear codes with small hulls have applications in computational complexity and information protection. Linear codes with the smallest hull are LCD codes, which have been widely studied. Recently, several papers were devoted to related LCD codes over finite fields with size greater than 3 to linear codes with one-dimensional or higher dimensional hull. Therefore, an interesting and non-trivial problem is to study binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull with connection to binary LCD codes. The objective of this paper is to study some properties of binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull, and establish their relation with binary LCD codes. Some interesting inequalities are thus obtained. Using such a characterization, we study the largest minimum distance $d_{one}(n,k)$ among all binary linear $[n,k]$ codes with one-dimensional hull. We determine the largest minimum distances $d_{one}(n,n-k)$ for $ k\leq 5$ and $d_{one}(n,k)$ for $k\leq 4$ or $14\leq n\leq 24$. We partially determine the exact value of $d_{one}(n,k)$ for $k=5$ or $25\leq n\leq 30$.

The purpose of this paper is to solve the two conjectures on the largest minimum distance $d_{so}(n,5)$ of a binary self-orthogonal $[n,5]$ code proposed by Kim and Choi (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 2022). The determination of $d_{so}(n,k)$ has been a fundamental and difficult problem in coding theory because there are too many binary self-orthogonal codes as the dimension $k$ increases. Recently, Kim et al. (2021) considered the shortest self-orthogonal embedding of a binary linear code, and many binary optimal self-orthogonal $[n,k]$ codes were constructed for $k=4,5$. Kim and Choi (2022) improved some results of Kim et al. (2021) and made two conjectures on $d_{so}(n,5)$. In this paper, we develop a general method to determine the exact value of $d_{so}(n,k)$ for $k=5,6$ and show that the two conjectures made by Kim and Choi (2022) are true.

Let $q=p^h$ be a prime power and $e$ be an integer with $0\leq e\leq h-1$. $e$-Galois self-orthogonal codes are generalizations of Euclidean self-orthogonal codes ($e=0$) and Hermitian self-orthogonal codes ($e=\frac{h}{2}$ and $h$ is even). In this paper, we propose two general methods to construct $e$-Galois self-orthogonal (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes. As a consequence, eight new classes of $e$-Galois self-orthogonal (extended) GRS codes with odd $q$ and $2e\mid h$ are obtained. Based on the Galois dual of a code, we also study its punctured and shortened codes. As applications, new $e'$-Galois self-orthogonal maximum distance separable (MDS) codes for all possible $e'$ satisfying $0\leq e'\leq h-1$, new $e$-Galois self-orthogonal MDS codes via the shortened codes, and new MDS codes with prescribed dimensional $e$-Galois hull via the punctured codes are derived. Moreover, some new $\sqrt{q}$-ary quantum MDS codes with lengths greater than $\sqrt{q}+1$ and minimum distances greater than $\frac{\sqrt{q}}{2}+1$ are obtained., Comment: 26 pages, 11 tables

Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes which intersect their dual codes trivially, which have been of interest and extensively studied due to their practical applications in computational complexity and information protection. In this paper, we give some methods for constructing LCD codes over small finite fields by modifying some typical methods for constructing linear codes. We show that all odd-like binary LCD codes, ternary LCD codes and quaternary Hermitian LCD codes can be constructed using the modified methods. Our results improve the known lower bounds on the largest minimum distances of LCD codes. Furthermore, we give two counterexamples to disprove the conjecture proposed by Bouyuklieva (Des. Codes Cryptogr. 89(11): 2445-2461, 2021).

In this paper, we give a method for constructing linear codes with small hulls by generalizing the method in \cite{LCD-T-matric}. As a result, we obtain many optimal Euclidean LCD codes and Hermitian LCD codes, which improve the previously known lower bound on the largest minimum distance. We also obtain many optimal codes with one-dimension hull. Furthermore, we give three tables about formally self-dual LCD codes.
