Characterization of the structural and electron transport properties of single chiral molecules provides critical insights into the interplay between their electronic structure and electrochemical environments, providing broader implications given the significance of molecular chirality in chiroptical applications and pharmaceutical sciences. Here, we examined the topographic and electronic features of a recently developed chiral molecule, B,N-embedded double hetero[7]helicene, at the edge of Cu(100) supported NaCl thin film with scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. An electron transport energy gap of 3.2 eV is measured, which is significantly larger than the energy difference between the highest occupied and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals given by theoretical calculations or optical measurements. Through first principles calculations, we demonstrated that this energy discrepancy results from the Coulomb interaction between the tunneling electron and the molecule's electrons. This occurs in electron transport processes when the molecule is well decoupled from the electrodes by the insulating decoupling layers, leading to a temporary ionization of the molecule during electron tunneling. Beyond revealing properties concerning a specific molecule, our findings underscore the key role of Coulomb interactions in modulating electron transport in molecular junctions, providing insights into the interpretation of scanning tunneling spectroscopy features of molecules decoupled by insulating layers.

Controlling the state of molecules on surfaces is crucial for the advancement of molecular electronics. While reversible control of bistable molecule switches has been demonstrated, achieving controllable multi-state switching at the molecular scale remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we introduce a simple and effective strategy for the on-demand control of a multi-level molecular switch by creating a molecular dimer. We explore the transition behavior of a pyrrolidine dimer system on the Cu(100) surface using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. By fine-tuning the voltage and tip-molecule distance, we can selectively determine the dominant state of the dimer system. Both intermolecular and tip-molecule interactions play a role in modifying the transition pathways, enabling precise multi-state control.

On-demand control of molecular actions is a crucial step toward the realization of single-molecule functional devices. Such a control can be achieved by manipulating interactions between individual molecules and their nanoscale environment. In this study, we induce and manipulate the conformational transition of a single molecular adsorbate by exciting its vibrations with tunneling electrons using scanning tunneling microscopy. Several transition pathways between two structural states of a pyrrolidine molecule on a Cu(100) surface have been identified as being driven by different molecular vibrations. Density functional theory simulations further determine the nuclear motions of these vibrational modes. The introduction of tip-induced van der Waals forces and intermolecular interactions allows for precise manipulation of the molecule-environment interaction, which shifts the vibrational energies and alters the transition probability through different channels between the two structural states. This work reveals how molecular conformational transitions can be modulated by external force fields in a tunable nano-cavity, highlighting the potential to deliberately engineer molecule-environment interactions for specific molecular functions.

The structural and chemical properties of metal nanoparticles are often dictated by their interactions with molecular ligand shells. These interactions are highly material-specific and can vary significantly even among elements within the same group or materials with similar crystal structure. Precise characterization of ligand-metal interactions is crucial for the rational design of ligands and the functionalization of nanoparticles. In this study, we found that the ligation behavior with m-terphenyl isocyanide molecule differs significantly between Au and Ag nanoparticles, with distinct ligand extraction efficiencies and size dependencies. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed unique enhancement factors for two molecular vibrational modes between two metal surfaces, indicating different ligand binding geometries. Molecular-level characterization using scanning tunneling microscopy allowed us to directly visualize these variations between Ag and Au surfaces, which we assign as two distinct binding mechanisms. This molecular-scale visualization provides clear insights into the different ligand-metal interactions, as well as the chemical behavior and spectroscopic characteristics of isocyanide-functionalized nanoparticles.

Frequency tunable qubit plays a significant role for scalable superconducting quantum processors. The state-of-the-art room-temperature electronics for tuning qubit frequency suffers from unscalable limit, such as heating problem, linear growth of control cables, etc. Here we propose a scalable scheme to tune the qubit frequency by using in situ superconducting circuit, which is based on radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device (rf-SQUID). We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the qubit frequency could be modulated by inputting several single pulses into rf-SQUID. Compared with the traditional scheme, our scheme not only solves the heating problem, but also provides the potential to exponentially reduce the number of cables inside the dilute refrigerator and the room-temperature electronics resource for tuning qubit frequency, which is achieved by a time-division-multiplex (TDM) scheme combining rf-SQUID with switch arrays. With such TDM scheme, the number of cables could be reduced from the usual $\sim 3n$ to $\sim \log_2{(3n)} + 1$ for two-dimensional quantum processors comprising $n$ qubits and $\sim 2n$ couplers. Chinese landscape painting is a gem of Chinese cultural and artistic heritage that showcases the splendor of nature through the deep observations and imaginations of its painters. Limited by traditional techniques, these artworks were confined to static imagery in ancient times, leaving the dynamism of landscapes and the subtleties of artistic sentiment to the viewer's imagination. Recently, emerging text-to-video (T2V) diffusion methods have shown significant promise in video generation, providing hope for the creation of dynamic Chinese landscape paintings. However, challenges such as the lack of specific datasets, the intricacy of artistic styles, and the creation of extensive, high-quality videos pose difficulties for these models in generating Chinese landscape painting videos. In this paper, we propose CLV-HD (Chinese Landscape Video-High Definition), a novel T2V dataset for Chinese landscape painting videos, and ConCLVD (Controllable Chinese Landscape Video Diffusion), a T2V model that utilizes Stable Diffusion. Specifically, we present a motion module featuring a dual attention mechanism to capture the dynamic transformations of landscape imageries, alongside a noise adapter to leverage unsupervised contrastive learning in the latent space. Following the generation of keyframes, we employ optical flow for frame interpolation to enhance video smoothness. Our method not only retains the essence of the landscape painting imageries but also achieves dynamic transitions, significantly advancing the field of artistic video generation. We present the design of a helium liquefaction system tailored to efficiently recover helium vapor from individual or small clusters of vibration-sensitive cryogenic instruments. This design prioritizes a compact footprint, mitigating potential contamination sources such as gas bags and oil-lubricated compressors while maximizing the recovery rate by capturing both the boil-offs during normal operation and the refilling process of the cryostat. We demonstrated its performance by applying it to a commercial low-temperature scanning probe microscope. It features a > 94% recovery rate and induces negligible vibrational noise to the microscope. Due to its adaptability, affordability, compact size, and suitability for homemade setups, we foresee that our design can be utilized across a wide range of experimental measurements where liquid helium is used as the cryogen.

Sterically encumbering m-terphenyl isocyanides are a class of metal-binding group that foster low-coordinate metal-center environments in coordination chemistry by exerting considerable intermolecular steric pressures between neighboring ligands. In the context of metal surfaces, the encumbering steric properties of the m-terphenyl isocyanides are shown to weaken the interaction between the metal-binding group and a planar substrate, leading to a preference for molecular adsorption at sites with convex curvature, such as the step edges and herringbone elbow sites on Au(111). Here, we investigate the site-selective binding of individual m-terphenyl isocyanide ligands on a Au(111) surface through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS). The site-dependent steric pressure alters the vibrational fingerprint of the m-terphenyl isocyanides, which is characterized with single-molecule precision through joint experimental and theoretical approaches. This study for the first time provides molecular-level insights into the steric-pressure-enabled surface binding selectivity as well as its effect on the chemical properties of individual m-terphenyl isocyanide ligands, thereby highlighting the potential to control the physical and chemical properties of metal surfaces through tailored ligand design.

Fault-tolerant quantum computing based on surface code has emerged as an attractive candidate for practical large-scale quantum computers to achieve robust noise resistance. To achieve universality, magic states preparation is a commonly approach for introducing non-Clifford gates. Here, we present a hardware-efficient and scalable protocol for arbitrary logical state preparation for the rotated surface code, and further experimentally implement it on the \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 superconducting quantum processor. An average of \hhl{$0.8983 \pm 0.0002$} logical fidelity at different logical states with distance-three is achieved, \hhl{taking into account both state preparation and measurement errors.} In particular, \hhl{the magic states $|A^{\pi/4}\rangle_L$, $|H\rangle_L$, and $|T\rangle_L$ are prepared non-destructively with logical fidelities of $0.8771 \pm 0.0009 $, $0.9090 \pm 0.0009 $, and $0.8890 \pm 0.0010$, respectively, which are higher than the state distillation protocol threshold, 0.859 (for H-type magic state) and 0.827 (for T -type magic state).} Our work provides a viable and efficient avenue for generating high-fidelity raw logical magic states, which is essential for realizing non-Clifford logical gates in the surface code., Comment: In this version, we do not employ readout error mitigation strategies (in the previous version, we use readout transition matrix to mitigate the measurement error) to remove measurement errors because we believe it provides a more predictive assessment of the actual fidelity when generating and consuming magic states for a non-Clifford gate, as consuming the state involves measurement

Quantum computational chemistry has emerged as an important application of quantum computing. Hybrid quantum-classical computing methods, such as variational quantum eigensolvers (VQE), have been designed as promising solutions to quantum chemistry problems, yet challenges due to theoretical complexity and experimental imperfections hinder progress in achieving reliable and accurate results. Experimental works for solving electronic structures are consequently still restricted to nonscalable (hardware efficient) or classically simulable (Hartree-Fock) ansatz, or limited to a few qubits with large errors. The experimental realisation of scalable and high-precision quantum chemistry simulation remains elusive. Here, we address the critical challenges {associated with} solving molecular electronic structures using noisy quantum processors. Our protocol presents significant improvements in the circuit depth and running time, key metrics for chemistry simulation. Through systematic hardware enhancements and the integration of error mitigation techniques, we push forward the limit of experimental quantum computational chemistry and successfully scale up the implementation of VQE with an optimised unitary coupled-cluster ansatz to 12 qubits. We produce high-precision results of the ground-state energy for molecules with error suppression by around two orders of magnitude. We achieve chemical accuracy for H$_2$ at all bond distances and LiH at small bond distances in the experiment, even beyond the two recent concurrent works. The development of high-fidelity two-qubit quantum gates is essential for digital quantum computing. Here, we propose and realize an all-microwave parametric Controlled-Z (CZ) gates by coupling strength modulation in a superconducting Transmon qubit system with tunable couplers. After optimizing the design of the tunable coupler together with the control pulse numerically, we experimentally realized a 100 ns CZ gate with high fidelity of 99.38%$ \pm$0.34% and the control error being 0.1%. We note that our CZ gates are not affected by pulse distortion and do not need pulse correction, {providing a solution for the real-time pulse generation in a dynamic quantum feedback circuit}. With the expectation of utilizing our all-microwave control scheme to reduce the number of control lines through frequency multiplexing in the future, our scheme draws a blueprint for the high-integrable quantum hardware design.

Classifying many-body quantum states with distinct properties and phases of matter is one of the most fundamental tasks in quantum many-body physics. However, due to the exponential complexity that emerges from the enormous numbers of interacting particles, classifying large-scale quantum states has been extremely challenging for classical approaches. Here, we propose a new approach called quantum neuronal sensing. Utilizing a 61 qubit superconducting quantum processor, we show that our scheme can efficiently classify two different types of many-body phenomena: namely the ergodic and localized phases of matter. Our quantum neuronal sensing process allows us to extract the necessary information coming from the statistical characteristics of the eigenspectrum to distinguish these phases of matter by measuring only one qubit. Quantum error correction is a critical technique for transitioning from noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices to fully fledged quantum computers. The surface code, which has a high threshold error rate, is the leading quantum error correction code for two-dimensional grid architecture. So far, the repeated error correction capability of the surface code has not been realized experimentally. Here, we experimentally implement an error-correcting surface code, the distance-3 surface code which consists of 17 qubits, on the \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 superconducting quantum processor. By executing several consecutive error correction cycles, the logical error can be significantly reduced after applying corrections, achieving the repeated error correction of surface code for the first time. This experiment represents a fully functional instance of an error-correcting surface code, providing a key step on the path towards scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing.

High-fidelity two-qubits gates are essential for the realization of large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Tunable coupler design is used to reduce the problem of parasitic coupling and frequency crowding in many-qubit systems and thus thought to be advantageous. Here we design a extensible 5-qubit system in which center transmon qubit can couple to every four near-neighbor qubit via a capacitive tunable coupler and experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity controlled-phase (CZ) gate by manipulating center qubit and one near-neighbor qubit. Speckle purity benchmarking (SPB) and cross entrophy benchmarking (XEB) are used to assess the purity fidelity and the fidelity of the CZ gate. The average purity fidelity of the CZ gate is 99.69$\pm$0.04\% and the average fidelity of the CZ gate is 99.65$\pm$0.04\% which means the control error is about 0.04\%. To ensure a long-term quantum computational advantage, the quantum hardware should be upgraded to withstand the competition of continuously improved classical algorithms and hardwares. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting quantum computing systems \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1, which has 66 qubits in a two-dimensional array in a tunable coupler architecture. The readout fidelity of \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 is considerably improved to an average of 97.74\%. The more powerful quantum processor enables us to achieve larger-scale random quantum circuit sampling, with a system scale of up to 60 qubits and 24 cycles. The achieved sampling task is about 6 orders of magnitude more difficult than that of Sycamore [Nature \textbf{574}, 505 (2019)] in the classic simulation, and 3 orders of magnitude more difficult than the sampling task on \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.0 [arXiv:2106.14734 (2021)]. The time consumption of classically simulating random circuit sampling experiment using state-of-the-art classical algorithm and supercomputer is extended to tens of thousands of years (about $4.8\times 10^4$ years), while \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 only takes about 4.2 hours, thereby significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.

Periodically driven systems, or Floquet systems, exhibit many novel dynamics and interesting out-of-equilibrium phases of matter. Those phases arising with the quantum systems' symmetries, such as global $U(1)$ symmetry, can even show dynamical stability with symmetry-protection. Here we experimentally demonstrate a $U(1)$ symmetry-protected prethermal phase, via performing a digital-analog quantum simulation on a superconducting quantum processor. The dynamical stability of this phase is revealed by its robustness against external perturbations. We also find that the spin glass order parameter in this phase is stabilized by the interaction between the spins. Scaling up to a large number of qubits with high-precision control is essential in the demonstrations of quantum computational advantage to exponentially outpace the classical hardware and algorithmic improvements. Here, we develop a two-dimensional programmable superconducting quantum processor, \textit{Zuchongzhi}, which is composed of 66 functional qubits in a tunable coupling architecture. To characterize the performance of the whole system, we perform random quantum circuits sampling for benchmarking, up to a system size of 56 qubits and 20 cycles. The computational cost of the classical simulation of this task is estimated to be 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than the previous work on 53-qubit Sycamore processor [Nature \textbf{574}, 505 (2019)]. We estimate that the sampling task finished by \textit{Zuchongzhi} in about 1.2 hours will take the most powerful supercomputer at least 8 years. Our work establishes an unambiguous quantum computational advantage that is infeasible for classical computation in a reasonable amount of time. The high-precision and programmable quantum computing platform opens a new door to explore novel many-body phenomena and implement complex quantum algorithms.

The Wigner crystal state, first predicted by Eugene Wigner in 1934, has fascinated condensed matter physicists for nearly 90 years2-14. Studies of two-dimensional (2D) electron gases first revealed signatures of the Wigner crystal in electrical transport measurements at high magnetic fields2-4. More recently optical spectroscopy has provided evidence of generalized Wigner crystal states in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) moir\'e superlattices. Direct observation of the 2D Wigner crystal lattice in real space, however, has remained an outstanding challenge. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in principle has sufficient spatial resolution to image a Wigner crystal, but conventional STM measurements can potentially alter fragile Wigner crystal states in the process of measurement. Here we demonstrate real-space imaging of 2D Wigner crystals in WSe2/WS2 moir\'e heterostructures using a novel non-invasive STM spectroscopy technique. We employ a graphene sensing layer in close proximity to the WSe2/WS2 moir\'e superlattice for Wigner crystal imaging, where local STM tunneling current into the graphene sensing layer is modulated by the underlying electron lattice of the Wigner crystal in the WSe2/WS2 heterostructure. Our measurement directly visualizes different lattice configurations associated with Wigner crystal states at fractional electron fillings of n = 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3, where n is the electron number per site. The n=1/3 and n=2/3 Wigner crystals are observed to exhibit a triangle and a honeycomb lattice, respectively, in order to minimize nearest-neighbor occupations. The n = 1/2 state, on the other hand, spontaneously breaks the original C3 symmetry and forms a stripe structure in real space. Our study lays a solid foundation toward the fundamental understanding of rich Wigner crystal states in WSe2/WS2 moir\'e heterostructures.
