Nonlinearities in lattices with topological band structures can induce topological interfaces in the bulk of structures and give rise to bulk solitons in the topological bandgaps. Here we study a photonic Chern insulator with saturable nonlinearity and show the existence of topological bulk solitons. The fundamental bulk solitons exhibit as semi-vortex solitons, where only one pseudospin component has a nonzero vorticity. The bulk solitons have equal angular momentum at different valleys. This phenomenon is a direct outcome of the topology of the linear host lattice and the angular momentum can be changed by switching the sign of the nonlinearity. The bulk solitons bifurcate from the linear bulk band edge and terminate when their powers saturate. We find that these bulk solitons are stable within the whole spectrum range. Moreover, these bulk solitons are robust against lattice disorders both from on-site energies and hopping amplitudes. Our work extends the study of Chern insulators into the nonlinear regime and highlights the interplay between topology and nonlinearity.

Three-dimensional (3D) topological materials exhibit much richer phenomena than their lower-dimensional counterparts. Here, we propose self-localized topological states (i.e., topological solitons) in a 3D nonlinear photonic Chern insulator. Despite being in the bulk and self-localized in all 3D, the topological solitons at high-symmetry points K and K' rotate in the same direction, due to the underlying topology. Specifically, under the saturable nonlinearity the solitons are stable over a broad frequency range. Our results highlight how topology and nonlinearity interact with each other and can be extended to other 3D topological systems.

Quadrupole topological insulators are a new class of topological insulators with quantized quadrupole moments, which support protected gapless corner states. The experimental demonstrations of quadrupole-topological insulators were reported in a series of artificial materials, such as photonic crystals, acoustic crystals, and electrical circuits. In all these cases, the underlying structures have discrete translational symmetry and thus are periodic. Here we experimentally realize two-dimensional aperiodic-quasicrystalline quadrupole-topological insulators by constructing them in electrical circuits, and observe the spectrally and spatially localized corner modes. In measurement, the modes appear as topological boundary resonances in the corner impedance spectra. Additionally, we demonstrate the robustness of corner modes on the circuit. Our circuit design may be extended to study topological phases in higher-dimensional aperiodic structures.

The phenomenon of negative refraction generally requires negative refractive indices or phase discontinuities, which can be realized using metamaterials or metasurfaces. Recent theories have proposed a novel mechanism for negative refraction based on synthetic gauge fields, which affect classical waves as if they were charged particles in electromagnetic fields, but this has not hitherto been demonstrated in experiment. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of gauge-field-induced negative refraction in a twisted bilayer acoustic metamaterial. The bilayer twisting produces a synthetic gauge field for sound waves propagating within a projected two-dimensional geometry, with the magnitude of the gauge field parameterized by the choice of wavenumber along the third dimension. Waveguiding with backward propagating modes is also demonstrated in a trilayer configuration that implements strong gauge fields. These results provide an alternative route to achieving negative refraction in synthetic materials.

The in-plane negative refraction of high-momentum (i.e., high-k) photonic modes could enable many applications such as imaging and hyperlensing in a planar platform at deep-subwavelength scales. However, its practical implementation in experiments remains elusive so far. Here we propose a class of hyperbolic metasurfaces, which is characterized by an anisotropic magnetic sheet conductivity and can support the in-plane ultrahigh-k magnetic designer polaritons. Based on such metasurfaces, we report the first experimental observation of the all-angle negative refraction of designer polaritons at extremely deep-subwavelength scales. Moreover, we directly visualize the designer polaritons with hyperbolic dispersions. Importantly, for these hyperbolic polaritons, we find that their squeezing factor is ultra-large and, to be specific, it can be up to 129 in the experiments, a record-breaking value exceeding those in naturally hyperbolic materials. The present scheme for the achievement of negative refraction is also applicable to other natural materials and may enable intriguing applications in nanophotonics. Besides, the proposed metasurfaces are readily tailorable in space and frequency, which could serve as a versatile platform to explore the extremely high confinement and unusual propagation of hyperbolic polaritons., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Weyl points (WPs), as nodal degenerate points in three-dimensional (3D) momentum space, are ideal if they are symmetry-related, well-separated, residing at the same energy and far from the nontopological bands. Although type-II WPs show some unique features compared with type-I counterparts, ideal type-II WPs have not yet been reported due to the lack of an ideal Weyl system with enough flexibility to tilt the dispersion bands. By stacking two-dimensional (2D) layers of inductor-capacitor (LC) resonator dimers with the breaking of parity inversion symmetry, here we experimentally realize the topological circuits with only the topological bands and observe a minimal number of four ideal type-II WPs. Two hallmark features of type-II WPs: a strongly tilted band structure with two group velocities having the same sign near type-II WPs and the topological surface states in an incomplete bandgap have been demonstrated. Our results establish an ideal system to the further study of Weyl physics and provide a new perspective to the access of topological matters.

In nonlinear plasmonics, the switching threshold of optical bistability is limited by the weak nonlinear responses from the conventional Kerr dielectric media. Considering the giant nonlinear susceptibility of graphene, here we develop a nonlinear scattering model under the mean field approximation and study the bistable scattering in graphene-coated dielectric nanowires based on the semi-analytical solutions. We find that the switching intensities of bistable scattering can be smaller than 1MW/cm2 at the working frequency. To further decrease the switching intensities, we show that the most important factor that restricts the bistable scattering is the relaxation time of graphene, rather than the chemical potential and the permittivity of the dielectric nanowire. Our work not only reveals some general characteristics of graphene-based bistable scattering, but also provides a guidance to further applications of optical bistability in the high speed all-optical signal processing.

With the intriguing properties of diffraction-free, self-accelerating, and self-healing, Airy plasmons are promising to be used in the trapping, transporting, and sorting of micro-objects, imaging, and chip scale signal processing. However, the high dissipative loss and the lack of dynamical steerability restrict the implementation of Airy plasmons in these applications. Here we reveal the hybrid Airy plasmons for the first time by taking a hybrid graphene-based plasmonic waveguide in the terahertz (THz) domain as an example. Due to the coupling between an optical mode and a plasmonic mode, the hybrid Airy plasmons can have large propagation lengths and effective transverse deflections, where the transverse waveguide confinements are governed by the hybrid modes with moderate quality factors. Meanwhile, the propagation trajectories of hybrid Airy plasmons are dynamically steerable by changing the chemical potential of graphene. In this paper, we propose that both the quasi-transverse-magnetic (TM) and quasi-transverseelectric (TE) Airy plasmons can be supported in graphene-based waveguides. The solution of Airy plasmons is calculated analytically and the existence of Airy plasmons is studied under the paraxial approximation. Due to the tunability of the chemical potential of graphene, the self-accelerating behavior of quasi-TM Airy plasmons can be steered effectively, especially in multilayer graphene based waveguides. Besides the metals, graphene provides an additional platform to investigate the propagation of Airy plasmons and to design various plasmonic devices.

The energy-momentum dispersion relation is a fundamental property of plasmonic systems. In this paper, we show that the method of dispersion engineering can be used for the design of ultra-compact graphene-based superscatterers. Based on the Bohr model, the dispersion relation of the equivalent planar waveguide is engineered to enhance the scattering cross section of a dielectric cylinder. Bohr conditions with different orders are fulfilled in multiple dispersion curves at the same resonant frequency. Thus the resonance peaks from the first and second order scattering terms are overlapped in the deepsubwavelength scale by delicately tuning the gap thickness between two graphene layers. Graphene monolayers can be used for atomically thin three-dimensional shell-shaped superscatterer designs. Due to the excitation of the first-order resonance of transverse magnetic (TM) graphene plasmons, the scattering cross section of the bare subwavelength dielectric particle is enhanced significantly by five orders of magnitude. The superscattering phenomenon can be intuitively understood and interpreted with Bohr model. Besides, based on the analysis of Bohr model, it is shown that contrary to the TM case, superscattering is hard to occur by exciting the resonance of transverse electric (TE) graphene plasmons due to their poor field confinements., Comment: This paper has been accepted for publication in Nanotechnology

We study analytically the plasmonic modes in the graphene-coated dielectric nanowire, based on the explicit form of nonlinear surface conductivity of graphene. The propagation constants of different plasmonic modes can be tuned by the input power at the order of a few tenths of mW. The lower and upper mode bifurcation branches are connected at the limitation value of the input power. Moreover, due to the nonlinearity of graphene, the dispersion curves of plasmonic modes at different input powers form an energy band, which is in sharp contrast with the single dispersion curve in the limit of zero input power.

We design and optimize a waveguide structure consisted of three segments of PT-symmetric coupler. It can amplify the difference mode with the attenuation of the sum mode, so performs an asymmetric optical amplifier. A double-channel waveguide with gain and loss is addressed and the corresponding coupled-mode equations are established by employing the coupled mode approach. Based on the coupled-mode equations, the beam dynamics in the double-channel waveguide with gain and loss is investigated, and the results show that there exist three distinct dynamical behaviors, which are amplification, attenuation to zero and tending to a steady value (or equilibrium state), respectively. We investigate the unique properties of various analytical optical modes, including the fundamental modes and the excited modes, in a double-channel waveguide with parity-time (PT) symmetry. Based on these optical modes, the dependence of the threshold values for the gain/loss parameter, i.e., PT symmetry breaking points, on the structure parameters is discussed. We find that the threshold value for the excited modes is larger than that of the fundamental mode. We study light-beam propagation in a nonlinear coupler with an asymmetric double-channel waveguide and derive various analytical forms of optical modes. The results show that the symmetry-preserving modes in a symmetric double-channel waveguide are deformed due to the asymmetry of the two-channel waveguide, yet such a coupler supports the symmetry-breaking modes. The dispersion relations reveal that the system with self-focusing nonlinear response supports the degenerate modes, while for self-defocusingmedium the degenerate modes do not exist.
