5. Hazardous lending: The impact of natural disasters on bank asset portfolio

Abstract

This paper examines how banks adjust their asset structure in response to changes in loan demand following natural disasters. We demonstrate how banks' asset diversification strategy helps clients smooth consumption and supports local recovery. In the empirical section, we apply the difference-in-differences method and determine that U.S. commercial banks increase real estate lending after disasters and sell government bonds to finance this disaster-driven credit surge. The theoretical section presents a novel multiple-asset dynamic credit allocation model that explains our empirical findings. We use model simulations to predict and quantify the potential impact of climate change on the asset structure and profitability of banks given different scenarios.

Abstract

Pure amorphous carbon (a-C) film and that with a small amount of Ti are deposited on high speed steel substrates by using dc closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The studies have shown that Ti contained a-C film has the low wear rate and friction coefficient in humid air.

Abstract

Abstract: CrN/W2N multilayer films with various bilayer periods of 15–85nm were deposited on high speed steel (W18Cr4V) substrates by means of DC closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The morphology and microstructure of the multilayer films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The mechanical and tribological properties were evaluated using a nanoindentor, Rockwell and scratch tests and a conventional ball-on-disk tribometer, respectively. There were some transverse grains at the layer interface and the interface between the CrN and W2N layers was not so sharp owing to atom diffusion through the interface. In the bilayer period range, the microhardness, elastic modulus and adhesive strength of the CrN/W2N multilayer films increased with the decrease of bilayer period. The CrN/W2N multilayer film with a bilayer period of 15nm showed the highest hardness (29.2GPa), elastic modulus (376GPa) and best adhesion strength, it also had the highest wear resistance and lowest friction coefficient.
