11. The Effect of Low-Processing Temperature on the Physicochemical and Mechanical Properties of Bovine Hydroxyapatite Bone Substitutes

Abstract

Bovine bone grafts (BBX) require protein removal as part of the manufacturing process to reduce antigenicity and, in consequence, to be safely used in humans. Deproteinisation may have direct effects on the characteristics of the bone material and on in vivo material performance. This research aimed to comprehensively study the physicochemical and mechanical properties of BBX processed at low deproteinisation processing temperatures. Cubes of bovine bone (8 mm3) were treated with temperatures between 100 °C and 220 °C at 30 °C intervals and with pressures ranging from 1.01 to 24.58 Bar. The samples were characterised topographically and mechanically using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and uniaxial bending tests. The organic content and the chemical composition were determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR were also used to quantitatively determine the specimen crystallinity. Increasing temperature/pressure was associated with decreasing protein levels and compressive strength and increasing surface irregularities and crystallinity. The findings suggest that low-temperature processed bone is likely to exhibit a rapid in vivo degradation rate. The deproteinisation temperature can be adjusted to tailor the graft properties for specific applications.

22. Subchondral bone strength of the sacroiliac joint-a combined approach using computed tomography osteoabsorptiometry (CT-OAM) imaging and biomechanical validation

Abstract

Bone mineral density distribution patterns at the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) may reflect long-term adaptation patterns to the loading the joint endures. This study aims to display bone mineralisation patterns of the articular SIJ subchondral lamella using computed tomography (CT) osteoabsorptiometry and mechanical indenting, to determine whether a relationship exists between mineralisation and mechanical strength. Twenty hemipelves were CT-scanned before osteoabsorptiometry densitograms were derived. Each articular side of eleven SIJs was mechanically indented following a 10-mm grid scheme. The sacral surface displayed lower Hounsfield unit (HU) values (< 700 HU) than the iliac side (> 700 HU). The apex, superior corner and borders yielded the highest HU scores (> 700 HU). Penetration strength was significantly higher on the iliac side (p < 0.04). Mineral density correlated positively with penetration strength of the subchondral bone layer (p < 0.05). No correlations were found between the HU values, nor between penetration strength of corresponding sides of the same SIJ in the majority of cases (p > 0.05). The iliac subchondral lamella is mechanically denser than the sacral aspect. The non-correlation between density and bone strength of articulating sides indicates biomechanical non-conformity. Loading throughout the SIJ may follow a complex distribution pattern involving the surrounding soft tissues, suspending the sacrum between the ilia.

Abstract

Recently, a novel optical modulator heterostructure has been introduced based on voltage controlled electron transfer from a reservoir to a closely spaced quantum well. It has proven to exhibit large absorptive and refractive modulation at high speed and low power dissipation. In order to achieve monolithic integration with the existing high quality InGaAsP/InP lasers for high bit-rate systems, it is crucial to implement such devices within the same material system. In this letter, the authors demonstrate for the first time, InGaAsP/InP electron-transfer modulators grown using metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy.
