The contribution of a hollow structure on the rheological behavior of granular suspensions remains un‐investigated due to the challenge of water impermeability. Here starch is used to fabricate water‐permeable hollow particles, as a model for granular suspensions and investigated the resulting microstructures and rheological behavior. The hollow structure is fabricated based on a bottom‐up method by assembling micron‐sized building blocks into a superstructure. A Pickering emulsion is heated to fuse the starch interface, then, upon antisolvent precipitation, the polymer strands interlock to form a rigid shell around the oil template. When the template is removed a hollow particle remained. These particles exhibited a specific volume >5‐times higher than unmodified starch and consequently a higher viscosity. Larger particles showed higher viscosity but are also more fragile. The template structure can be manipulated to fine‐tune their functionality. These micro‐sized building blocks made from edible materials can be used as the next generation of texturizers. Additionally, these water‐permeable colloidosomes present an innovative approach to understanding how micro‐architectures impact the rheological behavior of granular suspensions. Abstract Natural animal-based flavors have great appeal to consumers and have broad applications in the food industry. In this review, we summarized findings related to bacon and Cheddar cheese flavors’ components and their precursors, reaction mechanisms, influential factors, and characterization methods. The results show that free sugars, free amino acids, peptides, vitamins, lipids, and nitrites are precursors to bacon flavor. The conditions governing the formation of bacon flavor are thermally dependent, which facilitates the use of thermal food processing to generate such a flavor. For Cheddar cheese flavor, milk ingredients such as lactose, citrate, fat, and casein are reported as precursors. The optimum conditions to generate Cheddar cheese flavor from precursors are quite strict, which limits its application in food processing. As an alternative, it is more practical to generate Cheddar cheese flavor by combining key aroma compounds using thermal food processing. There is an enormous demand in the food industry to shift toward natural flavors. However, most flavor molecules are significantly unstable outside their original sources. Moreover, limited studies are focused on the flavor formation mechanisms, regeneration methods, and stability, which could help facilitate this replacement by establishing a link between food processing conditions and flavor generation. This scoping review summarizes major findings related to the identification of garlic, onion, and chili pepper flavors and their precursor molecules, formation mechanisms, generation of flavors and precursors, characterization methods, and precursor stability under thermal food processing conditions. The findings confirmed that the allium flavors could be generated by alliin and isoalliin precursors through thermal processing. Also, the literature lacks detailed knowledge about chili pepper flavor's precursors, and only capsaicinoids have been reported as a thermally stable chili pepper flavor. Although numerous studies have focused on this area, there is still a lack of detailed applicable knowledge. Future investigations can be framed into (1) Development of efficient methods to generate flavors during food processing; (2) Improvement of flavors' stability; (3) Understanding the interactions of flavors and their precursors with other food ingredients and additives; and (4) Characterization of the organoleptic properties of flavors. Background. Although pembrolizumab is recommended as a first-line treatment for advanced recurrent/unresectable/metastatic (R/U/M) head and neck squamous carcinoma, the differences in its efficacy among different populations need to be investigated. Methods. We reviewed 15 consecutive patients with R/U/M oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treated with pembrolizumab monotherapy at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University between February 2021 and May 2022. All the 15 patients had known programmed death-ligand 1 expression and received multiple cycles of pembrolizumab monotherapy as first-line treatment. We evaluated and analyzed patients' basic characteristics, time to first remission, the clinical efficacy of pembrolizumab monotherapy, and treatment-related adverse reactions. Results. The objective response rate of the 15 patients was 60%. Six patients (40.0%) achieved partial response, while three patients (20.0%) achieved complete response. In our study, the objective response status of the patients was observed in two to five cycles (mean, 3.6 cycles). For patients who responded well to immunotherapy, the mean Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score after treatment was significantly higher than that before treatment (P < 0.001). The progression-free survival rates were 66.9% and 50.1% at 6 months and 1 year, respectively. Eight adverse events were observed, comprising four cases of rash and one case each of hypothyroidism, interstitial pneumonia, cheilitis, and cerebral thrombosis. Conclusion. Our study suggests that pembrolizumab is beneficial to the most responsive patients with R/U/M OSCC in our single-center study and may shed light on the management of OSCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) represent a novel class of non-coding RNAs that play significant roles in tumorigenesis and tumor progression. High-throughput sequencing of gastric cancer (GC) tissues has identified circRNA BIRC6 (circBIRC6) as a potential circRNA derived from the BIRC6 gene, exhibiting significant upregulation in GC tissues. The expression of circBIRC6 is notably elevated in GC patients. Functionally, it acts as a molecular sponge for miR-488, consequently upregulating GRIN2D expression and promoting GC proliferation, migration, and invasion. Moreover, overexpression of circBIRC6 leads to increased GRIN2D expression, which in turn enhances caveolin-1 (CAV1) expression, resulting in autophagy deficiency due to miR-488 sequestration. This cascade of events significantly influences tumorigenesis in vivo. Our findings collectively illustrate that the CircBIRC6-miR-488-GRIN2D axis fosters CAV1 expression in GC cells, thereby reducing autophagy levels. Background: Inappropriate pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) are both linked to preterm birth (PTB); however, which one plays a dominant role in PTB risk is not yet sure. We aimed to evaluate the combined effect of pre-pregnancy BMI and GWG on the risk of PTB in singleton pregnancies conceived both spontaneously and through assisted reproductive technology (ART). Methods: The data included all mothers (n = 17,540,977) who had a live singleton birth from the US National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) 2015–2019. Logistic regression models, quantile-g-computation, and generalized additive model were used to analyze the combined association of pre-pregnancy BMI and GWG with PTB. Results: The singleton PTB rate was significantly higher in ART pregnancies (11.5%) than in non-ART pregnancies (7.9%). When compared to those women with pre-pregnancy normal weight and GWG within Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines, the highest PTB risk was observed in non-ART women with pre-pregnancy underweight and GWG below IOM guidelines (aOR 2.56; 95% CI 2.53–2.60) and in ART women with pre-pregnancy obese and GWG below IOM guidelines (aOR 2.56; 95%CI 2.36–2.78). GWG dominated the combined effect with its joint effect coefficient of − 0.281 (P < 0.05) in non-ART women and − 0.108 (P < 0.05) in ART women. Conclusions: Inappropriate GWG played a dominant role in increasing the risk of PTB in both non-ART and ART populations. Counseling regarding pre-pregnancy BMI and especially GWG appears to be even more crucial for pregnancies conceived via ART, given their impact on PTB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The color changes of Chinese bayberry wines during storage is a wide and urgent problem and its mechanism is still not clear. The changes of composition and color parameters of Chinese bayberry wines were studied during 70 days of storage in the dark at three different temperatures (4, 25 and 37 °C). The L ∗, a ∗, b ∗, anthocyanins, total phenols, and total flavonoids decreased along with the increase of polymeric pigments at all temperatures while 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and browning index increased only at 37 °C. The degradation of anthocyanins followed a first-order kinetic model. No furfurals and ascorbic acid were detected at all temperatures during storage. Wines stored at higher temperature showed higher polymeric pigments. The result probably indicated phenols especially anthocyanins and polymeric pigments seem to be main factors than Maillard reaction in the color changes of Chinese bayberry wines during storage. Introduction: The composition and co-occurrence network of the airway microbiome might influence the asthma inflammatory phenotype. Airway microbiota change with asthma phenotypes, and the structure of the bacterial community in the airway might differ between different asthma inflammatory phenotypes and may also influence therapy results. Identifying airway microbiota can help to investigate the role that microbiota play in the asthma inflammatory process. Methods: Induced sputum from 55 subjects and 12 healthy subjects from Beijing, China, was collected and analyzed for bacterial microbiota. Microbiome diversity, composition, co-occurrence networks, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways were predicted and compared between the study groups. Results: Significant differences in the sputum microbiome composition, co-occurrence network, and predicted functional pathways were observed between the two inflammatory phenotypes. Asthmatics in the low FeNO group exhibited lower α-diversity in the sputum microbiota and had higher abundance of the phylum Proteobacteria compared with that of the high FeNO group. The network in the high FeNO group was more "closed" and "connected" compared with that of the low FeNO group, and an alteration in the abundance of keystone species T. socranskii was found. Significantly different predicted metabolic subfunctions including nucleotide metabolism, lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, replication and repair, and drug resistance antimicrobial and carbohydrate metabolism between the two studied phenotypes were also observed. Conclusion: Our findings confirm that the airway microbiota is associated with the asthma inflammation process. The differences in the airway microbiome composition and co-occurrence network may affect distinct asthma inflammatory phenotypes, suggesting the possibility that more targeted therapies could be applied based on the airway bacterial genera. Medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent feedback is suggested to protect the ear from acoustic injury and to increase its ability to discriminate sounds against a noisy background. We investigated whether type II spiral ganglion neurons participate in the contralateral suppression of the MOC reflex. The application of ouabain to the round window of the mouse cochlea selectively induced the apoptosis of the type I spiral ganglion neurons, left the peripherin-immunopositive type II spiral ganglion neurons intact, and did not affect outer hairs, as evidenced by the maintenance of the distorted product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). With the ouabain treatment, the threshold of the auditory brainstem response increased significantly and the amplitude of wave I decreased significantly in the ouabain-treated ears, consistent with the loss of type I neurons. Contralateral suppression was measured as reduction in the amplitude of the 2f1−f2 DPOAEs when noise was presented to the opposite ear. Despite the loss of all the type I spiral ganglion neurons, virtually, the amplitude of the contralateral suppression was not significantly different from the control when the suppressor noise was delivered to the treated cochlea. Objectives Our aims were to measure and compare anatomical parameters of the ossicles in normal, congenital aural stenosis (CAS), and congenital aural atresia (CAA) ears. Methods This retrospective study was performed using three-dimensional reconstructed images derived from computed tomography scans of 20 normal subjects, 20 CAS patients, and 20 CAA patients. Results The lengths of the malleus handle and long process of the incus were greater in normal ears than in CAS and CAA ears (all P < 0.05). The angles of the incudostapedial joint and between the short and long processes of the incus were smaller in normal ears than in CAS and CAA ears (all P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the positions of the malleus head and incudomalleolar joint, the size of the malleus head, the length of the short process of the incus, or the angle of the incudomalleolar joint (P > 0.05). Conclusions Anatomical parameters of the lower part, but not of the upper part, of the ossicular chain in CAS and CAA ears differed from those in normal ears. Different branchial arch origins of the upper and lower parts of the ossicular chain may explain these findings. Dysplasia of the second arch, which develops into the lower part of the ossicular chain, may contribute to ossicular malformation in CAA and CAS. Accurate radiographic measurement of malformed ossicles may be useful for reconstructive surgery of CAA and CAS using the patient's native ossicular chain and for choosing an appropriate place for active middle ear implants. • PEF intensity has significant positive effect on alliin infusion efficiency. • At lower PEF intensity, assisted infusion could improve alliin infusion efficiency. • When PEF intensity is 1.875 kJ/kg, PEF becomes dominant factor for alliin content. • Sensory tests confirm garlic flavor was generated from infused alliin after frying. A new method of alliin infusion into potato strips to generate garlic flavor upon frying was investigated. Potato strips were treated using pulsed electric field (PEF) and then allin was infused into the treated strips using immersion, ultrasound, or vacuum assisted infusion. Results showed that under lower PEF intensities (0.250, 0.650 and 1.250 kJ/kg), assisted infusion methods significantly improve alliin infusion efficiency (p < 0.05). The kinetics for alliin infusion showed that 1.250 kJ/kg PEF treatment and 35 kHz ultrasound assisted infusion have the highest a values of 94.69 and 94.80 (mg/mL . h), respectively. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) highlighted different cell structural changes before and after being treated with different PEF intensities and infusion methods. Background: Characteristics of airway microbiota might influence asthma status or asthma phenotype. Identifying the airway microbiome can help to investigate its role in the development of asthma phenotypes or small airway function. Methods: Bacterial microbiota profiles were analyzed in induced sputum from 31 asthma patients and 12 healthy individuals from Beijing, China. Associations between small airway function and airway microbiomes were examined. Results: Composition of sputum microbiota significantly changed with small airway function in asthma patients. Two microbiome-driven clusters were identified and characterized by small airway function and taxa that had linear relationship with small airway functions were identified. Background: Type II antifreeze protein (AFP) from the rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, is a calcium-dependent C-type lectin homolog, similar to the AFPs from herring and sea raven. While C-type lectins are ubiquitous, type II AFPs are only found in a few species in three widely separated branches of teleost fishes. Furthermore, several other non-homologous AFPs are found in intervening species. We have previously postulated that this sporadic distribution has resulted from lateral gene transfer. The alternative hypothesis, that the AFP evolved from a lectin present in a shared ancestor and that this gene was lost in most species, is not favored because both the exon and intron sequences are highly conserved. Results: Here we have sequenced and annotated a 160 kb smelt BAC clone containing a centrally-located AFP gene along with 14 other genes. Quantitative PCR indicates that there is but a single copy of this gene within the smelt genome, which is atypical for fish AFP genes. The corresponding syntenic region has been identified and searched in a number of other species and found to be devoid of lectin or AFP sequences. Unlike the introns of the AFP gene, the intronic sequences of the flanking genes are not conserved between species. As well, the rate and pattern of mutation in the AFP gene are radically different from those seen in other smelt and herring genes. Conclusions: These results provide stand-alone support for an example of lateral gene transfer between vertebrate species. They should further inform the debate about genetically modified organisms by showing that gene transfer between ‘higher’ eukaryotes can occur naturally. • Effect of organic acid on cyanidin-3-O-glucoside oxidation by iron was investigated. • The protective effect varied as: citric > oxalic > succinic > malic > tartaric acid. • Iron-chelating ability could not fully explain the protective effect. • Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside oxidation by Fe(III) was faster than that by Fe(II). • Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside oxidation by iron is inhibited in Chinese bayberry wine. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) is principal anthocyanin in Chinese bayberry wine and its degradation is main problem with respect to wine color. Effect of five organic acids existing in bayberry wine on C3G oxidation mediated by iron was investigated in model wine. Fe(II) oxidation was found to follow a decreasing order in oxalate > citrate > tartrate > malate model wine whereas it hardly occurred in succinate model wine. The C3G oxidation mediated by iron followed an increasing order in citrate > oxalate > succinate > malate > tartrate model wine. More degradation products were observed in succinate, malate and tartrate model wine than in citrate and oxalate model wine. C3G degradation mediated by Fe(III) was faster than that mediated by Fe(II) in oxalate, succinate, malate, and tartrate model wine, but not in citrate model wine. Purpose: To explore the relationship between symptomless multi-Variable apnea prediction (sMVAP) index and adverse outcomes of patients with Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).Methods: According to the sMVAP quartiles, we divided all patients into four groups. The clinical electronic medical records, nursing records, laboratory findings, and radiological examinations for all patients with laboratory confirmed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection were reviewed. Cox proportional hazard ratio (HR) models were used to determine the risk factors associated with in hospital death.Results: A total of 97 patients were included in this study. The "Quartile 4" group 's ICU transfer rate was significantly higher than the "Quartile 1" group. Coronary heart disease, high d-dimer and sMVAP at admission were associated with increased odds of death.Conclusions: Using the sMVAP index for obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) risk assessment, and then predicting the adverse outcomes of COVID-19 patients, is an effective method. Therefore, the use of sMVAP index for OSAHS screening for inpatients with COVID-19 should be vigorously promoted, and high-risk patients should be effectively managed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the effects of long-term moderate noise on hearing functions, MOCR, and MEMR.Methods: Mice were exposed to the moderate noise (11.2 - 22.4 kHz, 80 dB SPL, 6 h/day, 4 weeks). Subsequently, the hearing functions, including threshold and input-output roles of ABR (auditory brainstem response) and cubic (2f1-f2) DPOAEs (distortion product otoacoustic emissions) were evaluated. Also, MEMR and MOCR were assessed shortly after or at four weeks following the termination of exposure to the noise.Results: The mice's acoustic suppression reflex was strengthened, hearing functions and MEMR were unaffected four weeks after the moderate noise. For primary tones of 16, 20 and 24 kHz, the strengths of contralateral and ipsilateral suppression in the noise group were about double those recorded in the control group. In order to further determine whether the functional changes of the afferent or efferent nerves increased the strengths of acoustic suppression, the mouse's left ear was inserted the earplug, and then exposed the moderate noise for four weeks. The strengths of contralateral suppression at 16, 20 and 24 kHz were increased for the noise + earplug than for the control group and were indistinguishable between the noise + earplug and the noise group. While no significant changes were found in the strengths of ipsilateral suppression at all frequencies for the noise + earplug group compared with the control group. Under ketamine/xylazine anesthesia, the broadband suppressor noise did not stimulate the MEMR by 20 min post-induction at all frequencies in three groups.Conclusion: Our data demonstrated that the long-term moderate noise-exposure strengthened mice's MOCR by changing its afferent nerves, and unaffected cochlear hair cells and type I spiral ganglion neurons. Background: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a group of clinical syndromes characterized by visuospatial and visuoperceptual impairment, with memory relatively preserved. Although PCA is pathologically almost identical to Alzheimer's disease (AD), they have different cognitive features. Those differences have only rarely been reported in any Chinese population. The purpose of the study is to establish neuropsychological tests that distinguish the clinical features of PCA from early onset AD (EOAD).Methods: Twenty-one PCA patients, 20 EOAD patients, and 20 healthy controls participated in this study. Patients had disease duration of ≤4 years. All participants completed a series of neuropsychological tests to evaluate their visuospatial, visuoperceptual, visuo-constructive, language, executive function, memory, calculation, writing, and reading abilities. The cognitive features of PCA and EOAD were compared.Results: All the neuropsychological test scores showed that both the PCA and EOAD patients were significantly more impaired than people in the control group. However, PCA patients were significantly more impaired than EOAD patients in visuospatial, visuoperceptual, and visuo-constructive function, as well as in handwriting, and reading Chinese characters.Conclusions: The profile of neuropsychological test results highlights cognitive features that differ between PCA and EOAD. One surprising result is that the two syndromes could be distinguished by patients' ability to read and write Chinese characters. We present noncompetitive adsorption as "particles in a box with one sticky wall." We start with a general model that can be modeled as a simple ordinary differential equation (ODE). To verify the ODE students run a computer simulation. The ODE's solution imperfectly fits the simulation's data. This leads to the diffusion partial differential equation. We show how to determine the diffusion constant from theory; how to determine how many terms in the Fourier series solution need to be summed; and the use of nonlinear regression. Studies focusing on octapeptide repeat alteration mutations in PRNP in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) cohorts have been rare. We aim to screen sporadic AD and FTD patients with unknown etiology for the octapeptide repeat insertions and deletions in PRNP. Two hundred and six individuals were screened for alterations to the repeat region in the PRNP gene, including 146 sporadic AD and 60 sporadic FTD patients. Our study showed a 1.5% (3/206) occurrence of the octapeptide repeat alteration mutations in PRNP in a Chinese cohort of sporadic dementia. One late‐onset FTD patient and one early‐onset AD patient each had a two‐octapeptide repeat deletion in PRNP, while one early‐onset AD patient had a five‐octapeptide repeat insertion mutation. PRNP octapeptide repeat alteration mutations are present in sporadic AD and FTD patients. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of management of sialocele formation and to evaluate the quality of life of patients under elective management post‐parotidectomy. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was performed including patients who underwent postoperative management with either compression therapy or observation. The self‐filled questionnaire method was used to assess the quality of life of participants who changed from compression therapy to observation. Demographic and operative data, variables regarding wound complications and scores for quality of life were documented and analysed. Results: A total of 86 patients met the eligibility criteria. The respective rates of sialocele formation within 1 month were 5.3% in the compression therapy group (2/38) and 16.0% in the observation group (4/25), but no significant difference was observed (p = 0.204). Meanwhile, both groups displayed comparable times of needle aspiration and time for sialocele resolution (p > 0.05). Based on 23 valid paired questionnaires, scores for physical and social‐emotional function before changing from compression therapy to observation were significantly lower than scores after the change (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The application of observation after partial superficial parotidectomy appears to have acceptable clinical outcomes and considerable improvements in quality of life. • Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 was positively associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. • Long-term exposure to PM 2.5 may promote the development of arthritis in type 2 diabetes patients. • Quantitatively, 13.54% of type 2 diabetes and 18.54% of arthritis (in type 2 diabetes patients) were attributable to long-term exposure to PM 2.5 in China. • Women, older people, rural residents, and southern residents may be more susceptible to PM 2.5 for developing type 2 diabetes as well as complication of arthritis. It remains unclear whether type 2 diabetes and the complication of arthritis are causally related to the PM 2.5 pollutant. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations of long-term PM 2.5 exposure with type 2 diabetes and with arthritis in type 2 diabetes patients. This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) implemented during 2011–2018. The associations were analyzed by Cox proportional hazards regression models, and the population-attributable fraction (PAF) was calculated to assess the burden of type 2 diabetes and arthritis-attributable to PM 2.5. A total of 21,075 participants were finally included, with 19,121 analyzed for PM 2.5 and type 2 diabetes risk and 12,427 analyzed for PM 2.5 and arthritis risk, of which 1,382 with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes and 1,328 with arthritis during the follow-up. Overall, each 10 μg/m3 increment in PM 2.5 concentration was significantly associated with an increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes (HR = 1.26, 95 %CI1.22 to 1.31), and the PAF of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM 2.5 was 13.54 %. In type 2 diabetes patients, each 10 μg/m3 increment in PM 2.5 exposure was associated with an increase in arthritis (HR = 1.42, 95 %CI: 1.28 to 1.57), and the association was significantly greater than that (H = 1.23, 95 %CI: 1.19 to 1.28) in adults without type 2 diabetes. The PAFs of arthritis-attributable to PM 2.5 in participants with and without type 2 diabetes were 18.54 % and 10.69 %, respectively. Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea is a common sleep breathing disorder related to autonomic nervous function disturbances. Heart rate variability is an important non‐invasive indicator of autonomic nervous system function. The PubMed, Embase, Medline and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for English literature comparing patients with obstructive sleep apnea with controls up to May 2021. Heart rate variability outcomes, including integrated indices (parasympathetic function and total variability), time domain indices (the standard deviation of NN intervals and the root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats) and frequency domain indices (high‐frequency, low‐frequency, very‐low‐frequency and the ratio of low‐frequency to high‐frequency) were derived from the studies. Twenty‐two studies that included 2565 patients with obstructive sleep apnea and 1089 healthy controls were included. Compared with controls, patients with obstructive sleep apnea exhibited significantly reduced parasympathetic function. For the obstructive sleep apnea severity subgroup meta‐analysis, patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea had significantly lower parasympathetic function, high‐frequency, root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats and standard deviation of NN intervals, and higher low‐frequency and ratios of low‐frequency to high‐frequency. However, only the ratio of low‐frequency to high‐frequency was significantly higher in patients with moderate obstructive sleep apnea than in controls. Finally, for the collection time analysis, patients with obstructive sleep apnea had significantly higher low‐frequency and ratio of low‐frequency to high‐frequency at night, significantly lower parasympathetic function, high‐frequency, root mean square of the successive differences between normal heartbeats and standard deviation of NN intervals, and a higher ratio of low‐frequency to high‐frequency during the day than controls. Autonomic function impairment was more serious in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea. During sleep, low‐frequency can well reflect the impairment of autonomic function in obstructive sleep apnea, and the ratio of low‐frequency to high‐frequency may play an important role in obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis. Sepsis-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a major complication of death from bacterial infection. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) are important regulators in addressing lung injury. Considering the extensive research of circular RNAs (circRNAs), the role of circRNA in Treg modulation during ARDS remains unclear. In this study, patients with sepsis-induced ARDS along with non-ARDS controls were obtained, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected as clinical samples. Additionally, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) was performed to construct a septic ARDS model, and lung tissues as well as peripheral blood were collected. mRNA expressions were measured by RT-qPCR. ELISA was carried out to measure the concentration of inflammatory factors. A combination of online bioinformatics, dual-luciferase reporter, and RND pull-down assays was performed to verify interactions between microRNA (miRNA) and circRNA/mRNA. Tregs were measured by flow cytometry. Our data suggested that circFLNA was aberrantly elevated in ARDS, and depletion of circFLNA upregulated CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tregs and decreased inflammatory response. Additionally, miR-214-5p which binds with circFLNA, reversed circFLNA-induced effects in ARDS. Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) is a downstream target gene of miR-214-5p, and abrogated the effects of miR-214-5p on regulating CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tregs and inflammatory response. Eg5 (kinesin spindle protein) plays an essential role in mitosis. Inhibition of Eg5 function results in cell cycle arrest at mitosis, which leads to cell death. To date, Eg5 expression and its prognostic significance have not been studied in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, 26 freshly frozen HCC tissue samples and matched peritumoral tissue samples were evaluated with a one-step qPCR test and immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis was conducted on 156 HCC samples to investigate the relationships among Eg5 expression, clinicopathological factors, and prognosis. Eg5 mRNA and protein expression levels were significantly higher in HCC tissues relative to matched noncancerous tissues (p<0.05). High Eg5 protein expression was significantly related to liver cirrhosis (p=0.038) and TNM stage (p=0.008). Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression analyses revealed that Eg5 overexpression (p=0.001), liver cirrhosis (p=0.009), and TNM stage (p=0.025) were independent prognostic factors for overall survival. Actual high saline wastewater containing concentrated organics and sodium chloride is a bioenergy and renewable resource. This study compared two different bipolar membrane electrodialysis membranes from two companies' stacks to recover HCl and NaOH from sodium chloride solution and actual chemical wastewater. The results demonstrated that the electrolysis rates were around 1.5 kg/m2h, the HCl and NaOH production rates were about 0.9 kg/m2h, energy consumption was in the range of 1.05–1.27 kWh/kg, and the economic benefits were above 1 yuan/h in BMED systems. From analyzing the performance of seven different BMED membrane stacks, the B2 stack was chosen for electrolyzing actual high salt wastewater to observe the effect of chemical oxygen demand on BMED systems, where electrolytic salt performance, HCl-NaOH alkali production rates, and energy consumption show linear dependence on time for 5000 mg/L chemical oxygen demand wastewater. It illustrated chemical oxygen demand can enhance energy consumption and reduce electrolytic salt performance and the acid and alkali production rates, due to improving the membrane area resistance. In this study, the effect of high COD saline wastewater on the performance of a BMED membrane stack was clarified and the mechanism was analyzed for its practical application in treating chemical high salt wastewater. Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been a continuous global threat since the first identification of the disease in December 2019. COVID-19 vaccination is a crucial preventive approach that can halt this pandemic. However, many factors affect the willingness of the public to be vaccinated against COVID-19 at the early stage of the vaccination programme. We used network analysis to investigate the interrelation of vaccination willingness and its associated factors.Methods: A population-representative sample of 539 Chinese adults completed a battery of online self-assessments, including those on vaccination willingness, health status, attitude towards vaccines, COVID-19-related psychological elements and other variables. Network analysis was performed using the R qgraph package.Results: In total, 445 (82.6%) participants scored high on their willingness to vaccinate. Attitude towards vaccines, the influence of people around an individual and health status were directly significantly related to vaccination willingness. The betweenness of age was the highest and, the emotional states had the strongest centrality.Limitations: Network analysis is not sufficient to determine the causal relationships of the links between nodes. In addition, there are other latent essential elements that were not evaluated. Finally, the sample size was relatively small.Conclusion: Network analysis showed that attitude toward vaccines and emotional states are the most critical factors affecting vaccination willingness, which indicates that we should pay attention to the impact of the dissemination of Internet information on vaccination willingness and public emotional states during a pandemic which is very important for promoting vaccination programs. A combined treatment of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) and pH-shifting on the mixture of α-lactalbumin (α-LA) and tryptophan (Trp) was used to fabricate nanoparticles (α-LA-Trp-NP). The optimal α-LA/Trp ratio (5:1), HPH pressure (206.8 MPa), and recirculation time (40 min) was found to produce small α-LA-Trp-NP (243.0 ± 7.2 nm) with a narrow particle size distribution. Comparing the size and morphology of α-LA-NPs with α-LA-Trp-NPs indicated that the presence of Trp significantly affected the size and morphology of the NPs in the dry form. The stability of the α-LA-Trp-NPs was improved by using the combination of HPH and pH-shifting. The α-LA-Trp-NPs showed better freeze–thaw stability and retained the particle characteristics with heat treatment at 63 °C, 30 min after the freeze–thaw cycle. α-LA-Trp-NPs were also observed to have remarkable stability against pH changes and thermal treatments at 63 °C, 30 min, and 90 °C, 2 min. Aberrant DNA methylation is often related to the diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic response of acute myeloid leukemia (AML); however, relevant studies on the relationship between bone marrow myeloblast percentage and the DNA methylation level in AML have not been reported. We evaluated the effects of AML blast percentage on DNA methylation level using the MethylC-capture sequencing (MCC-Seq) approach based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) and found that the methylation level of both genome-wide and promoter regions significantly increased when the percentage of AML blasts reached ≥ 40%, indicating that an accurate DNA methylation level in cancer cells can be obtained when the bone marrow samples of AML patients have more than 40% myeloblasts. Background: During the past few years, there has been a surge in the use of ultrasound‐assisted catheter‐directed thrombolysis (UACDT) for submassive pulmonary embolism (SPE). However, few studies evaluated the feasibility of UACDT for SPE. Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of UACDT in treating SPE. Methods: A comprehensive search of online databases was performed. Search terms UACDT in SPE were entered into PubMed, Embase, Scopus and the Cochrane Library to identify related articles published until October 2018. A quality assessment and data extraction were performed by two researchers. Meta‐analysis was performed using R statistical software. Results: Twelve studies with 485 patients were included in this meta‐analysis. The pooled right ventricular/left ventricular ratio decrease and pulmonary artery systolic pressure drop after treatment was −0.34 (95% CI: −0.43, −0.25) and −15.05 (95% CI: −18.10, −12.00) mm Hg, respectively. The pooled major bleeding rate was 1.0% (95% CI: 0.0%, 3.0%), and the in‐hospital mortality was 0.0% (95% CI: 0.0%, 1.0%). Cochlear inner hair cell (IHC) ribbon synapses play an important role in sound encoding and neurotransmitter release. Previous reports show that both noise and aminoglycoside exposures lead to reduced numbers and morphologic changes of synaptic ribbons. In this work, we determined the distribution of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) and their role in the gentamicin-induced pathological changes of cochlear IHC ribbon synaptic elements. In normal mature mouse cochleae, the majority of NMDARs were distributed on the modiolar side of IHCs and close to the IHC nuclei region, while most of synaptic ribbons and α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) were located on neural terminals closer to the IHC basal poles. After gentamicin exposure, the NMDARs increased and moved towards the IHC basal poles. At the same time, synaptic ribbons and AMPARs moved toward the IHC bundle poles on the afferent dendrites. The number of ribbon synapse decreased, and this was accompanied by increased auditory brainstem response thresholds and reduced wave I amplitudes. NMDAR antagonist MK801 treatment reduced the gentamicin-induced hearing loss and the pathological changes of IHC ribbon synapse, suggesting that NMDARs were involved in gentamicin-induced ototoxicity by regulating the number and distribution of IHC ribbon synapses. Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids (HDLS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease, featured by cerebral white matter degeneration with demyelination and axonal spheroids. We collected three gene-confirmed HDLS cases in our neurodegenerative clinic. Two HDLS cases were sporadic with novel mutations, while another case had a family history with previously described mutations. All three cases suffered memory problems with white matter lesions and pyramid signs. No obvious clinical differences were observed between sporadic and familial HDLS cases. Distinct features, such as subcortical calcification in brain computed tomography and asymmetric abnormal MRI signal along the pyramid tracts throughout brainstem and spinal cord (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar segments), were observed in one sporadic case with novel mutation. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a devastating disease with dismal outcome. Both novel prognostic markers and therapeutic targets are needed to improve the overall outcome of patients. Although single or double VEGFRs have been studied in PDAC, little is known about the role of triple combination of VEGFRs (VEGFR1, 2, and 3) in prognosis and therapy. We determined VEGFRs protein expression in 241 pancreatic tissues by tissue microarray immunohistochemistry (TMA-IHC), and correlated with patients' clinical characteristics and overall survival. Subsequently, we inactivated VEGFRs expression using artificial microRNAs (amiRNAs) in vitro. Triple combination of amiRNAs to VEGFRs reduced cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, and reduced cell migration and invasion in pancreatic cancer cell lines. In the mouse xenograft pancreatic cancer model, triple VEGFRs silencing significantly reduced tumor growth, had synergistic effect with standard chemotherapy, and was associated with inhibition of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT). We conclude that triple combination of VEGFRs is a prognostic marker for PDAC, and inhibition of VEGFRs expression via amiRNA represents a novel targeted therapy in PDAC through regulating EMT. Colour and flavour are both important challenges for bayberry wine production because of a shortage of selected strains. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain YF152, separated from a natural Chinese bayberry fermentation mash [alcohol tolerance capacity (18.0%), SO2 (200 mg/L), sugar content (40%) and pH (2.50)] was employed to brew Chinese bayberry wine. Response surface methodology was used to simultaneously analyse the effects of the fermentation conditions on Chinese bayberry wine. The optimum conditions were found to be a temperature of 26.5 °C, an initial sugar content of 22.0°Brix, an inoculum size of 4.0% and an initial pH of 2.90. Under these conditions, the final alcohol content of the bayberry wine was 13.4%, the anthocyanin content was 77 mg/L and the residual sugar content was 1 g/L. These numbers agreed well with the predicted values. The major characteristic flavour components of the wine were 3-methyl-1-butanol, 2-phenylethanol, ethyl acetate, 2-methylbutyl acetate and acetic acid. • GYP stability was improved by adding phenols under light and high temperatures. • FTIR and NMR confirmed that phenols interacted with GYP through hydrogen bonds. • GYP mixed with phenols possessed high stability under different cooking methods. Gardenia yellow pigment (GYP) may undergo chemical degradation under different conditions resulting in color fading. This study investigated the effects of different phenolic compounds (caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, tannic acid, epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate) on the physical and chemical stability of GYP under light and different temperatures. Furthermore, food models with GYP/phenolic compounds were simulated to evaluate the GYP stability under different cooking methods. The addition of phenolic compounds, especially tannic acid, epigallocatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and rosmarinic acid, significantly improved the GYP stability during light and thermal treatments. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy confirmed that the formation of hydrogen bonds between GYP and selected phenolic compounds (tannic acid, epigallocatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and rosmarinic acid), which may lead to the enhancement of GYP stability. Increasing evidences suggest that inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of stroke, a devastating disease second only to cardiac ischemia as a cause of death worldwide. Microglia are the first non-neuronal cells on the scene during the innate immune response to acute ischemic stroke. Microglia respond to acute brain injury by activating and developing classic M1-like (pro-inflammatory) or alternative M2-like (anti-inflammatory) phenotypes. M1 microglia produce pro-inflammatory cytokines to exacerbate neural death, astrocyte apoptosis, and blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption, while M2 microglia play the opposite role. NF-κB, a central regulator of the inflammatory response, was responsible for microglia M1 and M2 polarization. NF-κB p65 and p50 form a heterodimer to initiate a pro-inflammatory cytokine response, which enhances M1 activation and impair M2 response of microglia. TLR4, expressed on the surface of microglia, plays an important role in activating NF-κB, ultimately causing the M1 response of microglia. Therefore, modulation of microglial phenotypes via TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway may be a promising therapeutic approach for ischemic stroke. Dietary (poly)phenols are present in various foods, which have shown promising protective effects on ischemic stroke. In vivo studies strongly suggest that many (poly)phenols have a pronounced impact on ischemic stroke, as demonstrated by lower neuroinflammation. Thus, this review focuses on the anti-inflammatory properties of dietary (poly)phenols and discusses their effects on the polarization of microglia through modulating TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway in the ischemic stroke.
