Abstract

Stellar-mass and supermassive black holes abound in the Universe, whereas intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) of ~10^2-10^5 solar masses in between are largely missing observationally, with few cases found only. Here we report the real-time discovery of a long-duration X-ray transient, EP240222a, accompanied by an optical flare with prominent H and He emission lines revealed by prompt follow-up observations. Its observed properties evidence an IMBH located unambiguously in the halo of a nearby galaxy and flaring by tidally disrupting a star -- the only confirmed off-nucleus IMBH-tidal disruption event so far. This work demonstrates the potential of sensitive time-domain X-ray surveys, complemented by timely multi-wavelength follow-ups, in probing IMBHs, their environments, demographics, origins and connections to stellar-mass and supermassive black holes., Comment: 64 pages, 15 figures, submitted

Abstract

Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. Abstract

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to originate from core collapse of massive stars. High-redshift GRBs can probe the star formation and reionization history of the early universe, but their detection remains rare. Here we report the detection of a GRB triggered in the 0.5--4 keV band by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, designated as EP240315a, whose bright peak was also detected by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope and Konus-Wind through off-line analyses. At a redshift of $z=4.859$, EP240315a showed a much longer and more complicated light curve in the soft X-ray band than in gamma-rays. Benefiting from a large field-of-view ($\sim$3600 deg$^2$) and a high sensitivity, EP-WXT captured the earlier engine activation and extended late engine activity through a continuous detection. With a peak X-ray flux at the faint end of previously known high-$z$ GRBs, the detection of EP240315a demonstrates the great potential for EP to study the early universe via GRBs., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

The Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy (LEIA), a pathfinder of the Wide-field X-ray Telescope of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, was successfully launched onboard the SATech-01 satellite of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 27 July 2022. In this paper, we introduce the design and on-ground test results of the LEIA instrument. Using state-of-the-art Micro-Pore Optics (MPO), a wide field-of-view (FoV) of 346 square degrees (18.6 degrees * 18.6 degrees) of the X-ray imager is realized. An optical assembly composed of 36 MPO chips is used to focus incident X-ray photons, and four large-format complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, each of 6 cm * 6 cm, are used as the focal plane detectors. The instrument has an angular resolution of 4 - 8 arcmin (in FWHM) for the central focal spot of the point spread function, and an effective area of 2 - 3 cm2 at 1 keV in essentially all the directions within the field of view. The detection passband is 0.5 - 4 keV in the soft X-rays and the sensitivity is 2 - 3 * 10-11 erg s-1 cm-2 (about 1 mini-Crab) at 1,000 second observation. The total weight of LEIA is 56 kg and the power is 85 W. The satellite, with a design lifetime of 2 years, operates in a Sun-synchronous orbit of 500 km with an orbital period of 95 minutes. LEIA is paving the way for future missions by verifying in flight the technologies of both novel focusing imaging optics and CMOS sensors for X-ray observation, and by optimizing the working setups of the instrumental parameters. In addition, LEIA is able to carry out scientific observations to find new transients and to monitor known sources in the soft X-ray band, albeit limited useful observing time available., Comment: Accepted by RAA

Abstract

As a novel X-ray focusing technology, lobster eye micro-pore optics (MPO) feature both a wide observing field of view and true imaging capability, promising sky monitoring with significantly improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in soft X-rays. Since first proposed by Angel (1979), the optics have been extensively studied, developed and trialed over the past decades. In this Letter, we report on the first-light results from a flight experiment of the Lobster Eye Imager for Astronomy ($LEIA$), a pathfinder of the wide-field X-ray telescope of the Einstein Probe mission. The piggyback imager, launched in July 2022, has a mostly un-vignetted field of view of $18.6^\circ \times 18.6^\circ $. Its spatial resolution is in the range of 4$-$7 arcmin in FWHM and the focal spot effective area is 2$-$3 cm$^2$, both showing only mild fluctuations across the field of view. We present images of the Galactic center region, Sco X-1 and the diffuse Cygnus Loop nebular taken in snapshot observations over 0.5$-$4 keV. These are truly wide-field X-ray images of celestial bodies observed, for the first time, by a focusing imaging telescope. Initial analyses of the in-flight data show excellent agreement between the observed images and the on-ground calibration and simulations. The instrument and its characterization are briefly described, as well as the flight experiment. The results provide a solid basis for the development of the present and proposed wide-field X-ray missions using lobster eye MPO., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

The relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ (PMN) has received attention due to its potential applications as a piezoelectric when doped with PbTiO$_{3}$ (PT). Previous results have found that there are two phases existing in the system, one linked to the near-surface regions of the sample, the other in the bulk. However, the exact origin of these two phases is unclear. In this paper, depth dependant analysis results from negative muon implantation experiments are presented. It is shown that the Pb content is constant throughout all depths probed in the sample, but the Mg and Nb content changes in the near-surface region below 100$\mu$m. At a implantation depth of 60$\mu$m, it is found that there is a 25% increase in Mg content, with a simultaneous 5% decrease in Nb content in order to maintain charge neutrality. Abstract

To overcome the challenges posed by the high parasitic resistance and poor driving performance induced by serious epitaxy defects in gate-all-around field-effect transistors (GAA FETs), a quasi-self-aligned landing pads (QSA LPs) technique is proposed, and defect-free connections among the multilayer stacked channels and single-crystal SiGe/Si superlattice source/drain (SD) structures are demonstrated in GAA FETs. When compared with devices with widely spaced LPs, reductions of 98.8% and 96.3% in the parasitic SD resistance ( ${R}_{\textit {SD}}$ ) are observed for N/PFETs when using the QSA LPs technique, respectively. Therefore, the corresponding on-state current ( ${I}_{\textit {on}}$ ) values are raised to $965~\mu $ A/ $\mu $ m and $669~\mu $ A/ $\mu $ m for 180 nm gate length N/PFETs, respectively. In addition, no significant changes are observed in the device subthreshold characteristics, including both the subthreshold swing and the on/off current ratios. The proposed scheme offers a new and promising approach to reduce the ${R}_{\textit {SD}}$ values and enhance the performance of these advanced GAA devices.

16. Evidence for anisotropic polar nanoregions in relaxor PMN: A neutron study of the elastic constants and anomalous TA phonon damping

Abstract

We use neutron scattering to characterize the acoustic phonons in the relaxor PMN and demonstrate the presence of an anisotropic damping mechanism directly related to short-range, polar correlations. For a large range of temperatures above Tc ~ 210, K, where dynamic polar correlations exist, acoustic phonons propagating along [1\bar{1}0] and polarized along [110] (TA2 phonons) are overdamped and softened across most of the Brillouin zone. By contrast, acoustic phonons propagating along [100] and polarized along [001] (TA1 phonons) are overdamped and softened for only a limited range of wavevectors. The anisotropy and temperature dependence of the acoustic phonon energy linewidth are directly correlated with the elastic diffuse scattering, indicating that polar nanoregions are the cause of the anomalous behavior. The damping and softening vanish for q -> 0, i.e. for long-wavelength acoustic phonons, which supports the notion that the anomalous damping is a result of the coupling between the relaxational component of the diffuse scattering and the harmonic TA phonons. Therefore, these effects are not due to large changes in the elastic constants with temperature because the elastic constants correspond to the long-wavelength limit. We compare the elastic constants we measure to those from Brillouin scattering and to values reported for pure PT. We show that while the values of C44 are quite similar, those for C11 and C12 are significantly less in PMN and result in a softening of (C11-C12) over PT. There is also an increased elastic anisotropy (2C44/(C11-C12)) versus that in PT. These results suggest an instability to TA2 acoustic fluctuations in relaxors. We discuss our results in the context of the debate over the "waterfall" effect and show that they are inconsistent with TA-TO phonon coupling or other models that invoke the presence of a second optic mode., Comment: (21 pages, 16 figures, to be published in Physical Review B)

Abstract

Structural behavior and equation of state of atomic and molecular crystal phases of dense hydrogen at pressures up to 3.5 TPa are systematically investigated with density functional theory. The results indicate that the Vinet EOS model that fitted to low-pressure experimental data overestimates the compressibility of dense hydrogen drastically when beyond 500 GPa. Metastable multi-atomic molecular phases with weak covalent bonds are observed. When compressed beyond about 2.8 TPa, these exotic low-coordinated phases become competitive with the groundstate and other high-symmetry atomic phases. Using nudged elastic band method, the transition path and the associated energy barrier between these high-pressure phases are evaluated. In particular for the case of dissociation of diatomic molecular phase into the atomic metallic Cs-IV phase, the existent barrier might raise the transition pressure about 200 GPa at low temperatures. Plenty of flat and broad basins on the energy surface of dense hydrogen have been discovered, which should take a major responsibility for the highly anharmonic zero point vibrations of the lattice, as well as the quantum structure fluctuations in some extreme cases. At zero pressure, our analysis demonstrates that all of these atomic phases of dense hydrogen known so far are unquenchable. NOTE: In the previous version of this paper (1010.3392v1) we made a mistake when evaluating the enthalpy of Cs-IV phase, which misled us to a conclusion that taking the multi-atomic molecular phases as the ground-state. After corrected this error, however, the atomic phase of Cs-IV becomes the static structure with the lowest enthalpy. Abstract

We have characterized the dynamics of the polar nanoregions in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) through high-resolution neutron backscattering and spin-echo measurements of the diffuse scattering cross section. We find that the diffuse scattering intensity consists of \emph{both} static and dynamic components. The static component first appears at the Curie temperature $\Theta \sim 400$ K, while the dynamic component freezes completely at the temperature T$_{f} \sim 200$ K; together, these components account for all of the observed spectral weight contributing to the diffuse scattering cross section. The integrated intensity of the dynamic component peaks near the temperature at which the frequency-dependent dielectric constant reaches a maximum (T$_{max}$) when measured at 1 GHz, i. e. on a timescale of $\sim 1$ ns. Our neutron scattering results can thus be directly related to dielectric and infra-red measurements of the polar nanoregions. Finally, the global temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering can be understood in terms of just two temperature scales, which is consistent with random field models., Comment: (8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

We report lattice dynamical measurements, made using neutron inelastic scattering methods, of the relaxor perovskite PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) at momentum transfers near the edge of the Brillouin zone. Unusual"columns" of phonon scattering that are localized in momentum, but extended in energy, are seen at both high-symmetry points along the zone edge: \vec{Q}_R={1/2, 1/2, 1/2} and \vec{Q}_M={1/2,1/2,0}. These columns soften at ~400 K which is similar to the onset temperature of the zone-center diffuse scattering, indicating a competition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric distortions. We propose a model for the atomic displacements associated with these phonon modes that is based on a combination of structure factors and group theoretical analysis. This analysis suggests that the scattering is not from tilt modes (rotational modes of oxygen octahedra), but from zone-boundary optic modes that are associated with the displacement of Pb^{2+} and O^{2-} ions. Whereas similar columns of scattering have been reported in metallic and (less commonly) molecular systems, they are unusual in insulating materials, particularly in ferroelectrics; therefore, the physical origin of this inelastic feature in PMN is unknown. Abstract

Neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques have been used to study the competing long and short-range polar order in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) under a [111] applied electric field. Despite reports of a structural transition from a cubic phase to a rhombohedral phase for fields E $>$ 1.7 kV/cm, we find that the bulk unit cell remains cubic (within a sensitivity of 90$^{\circ}$-$\alpha$ =0.03$^{\circ}$)for fields up to 8 kV/cm. Furthermore, we observe a structural transition confined to the near surface volume or `skin' of the crystal where the cubic cell is transformed to a rhombohedral unit cell at T$_{c}$=210 K for E $>$ 4 kV/cm, for which 90$^{\circ}$-$\alpha$=0.08 $\pm$ 0.03$^{\circ}$ below 50 K. While the bulk unit cell remains cubic, a suppression of the diffuse scattering and concomitant enhancement of the Bragg peak intensity is observed below T$_{c}$=210 K, indicating a more ordered structure with increasing electric field yet an absence of a long-range ferroelectric ground state in the bulk. The electric field strength has little effect on the diffuse scattering above T$_{c}$, however below T$_{c}$ the diffuse scattering is reduced in intensity and adopts an asymmetric lineshape in reciprocal space. The absence of hysteresis in our neutron measurements (on the bulk) and the presence of two distinct temperature scales suggests that the ground state of PMN is not a frozen glassy phase as suggested by some theories but is better understood in terms of random fields introduced through the presence of structural disorder. Based on these results, we also suggest that PMN represents an extreme example of the two-length scale problem, and that the presence of a distinct skin maybe necessary for a relaxor ground state., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (100)substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique, and were studied by measuring the Ti 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectra in the valence-band region as a function of film thickness, both at room temperature and low temperature. Our results demonstrated an abrupt variation in the spectral structures between 2.8 nm (~7 monolayers) and 2.0 nm (~5 monolayers) Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, suggesting that there exists a critical thickness for phase change in the range of 2.0 nm to 2.8 nm. Abstract

Spatially resolved neutron diffraction as a function of crystal depth in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ reveals the presence of a distinct near-surface region. A dramatic change in both the lattice constant and the Bragg peak intensity as a function of crystal depth is observed to occur in this region over a length scale $\sim$ 100 $\mu$m. This confirms a previous assertion, based on a comparison between high-energy x-rays and neutrons, that such a near surface region exists in the relaxors. Abstract

The temperature and zone dependence of the lattice dynamics in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is characterized using neutron inelastic scattering. A strong correlation between the diffuse and phonon scattering is measured. The lattice dynamics in Brillouin zones where the diffuse scattering is strong is observed to display qualitatively different behavior than those zones where the diffuse scattering is weak. In the (220) and (200) zones, where there is a weak diffuse component, the dynamics are well described by coupled harmonic oscillators. Compared with SrTiO$_{3}$, the coupling is weak and isotropic, resulting in only a small transfer of spectral weight from one mode to another. A comparison of the scattering in these zones to the (110) zone, where a strong diffuse component is present, reveals a strong coupling of the diffuse (or central) component to the acoustic mode. We speculate that the coupling to the central peak is the reason for several recent conflicting interpretations of the lattice dynamics based on data from zones with a strong diffuse component., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We report high $q$-resolution neutron scattering data on PMN-$x$PT single crystals with $x=20%$ and 27%. No rhombohedral distortion occurs in the 20PT sample for temperatures as low as 50 K. On the other hand, the 27PT sample transforms into a rhombohedral phase below T$_C \sim 375$ K. Our data provide conclusive evidence that a new phase with an average cubic lattice is present in the bulk of this relaxor system at low PT concentration, in which the ferroelectric polarization and lattice distortion are decoupled. 27. Development of Internal Tin Nb3Sn Strand for CRAFT in WST

Abstract

Western Superconducting Technologies Co. Ltd. (WST) has developed several types of internal tin (IT) process Nb3Sn strands for the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) project. By increasing the number of niobium filaments and the tin content, the Nb3Sn phase was more effectively formed after heat treatment, thereby enhancing the critical current of the strands. The distribution of the niobium filaments was also optimized to minimize hysteresis loss. To date, WST has prepared over twenty tons of strands with a diameter of 0.99 mm for toroidal field (TF) coils. The critical current ranges from 370 A to 450 A at 12 T and 4.2 K. Additionally, the hysteresis loss ranges from 272 mJ/cm3 to 567 mJ/cm3 at ± 3 T and 4.2 K. Compared to ITER strands, the average hysteresis loss of 432 mJ/cm3 was reduced by 10%. Furthermore, approximately eight tons of strands with a diameter of 0.82 mm have been produced for Superconducting Conductor Testing Facility. The critical current ranges from 293 A to 359 A at 12 T and 4.2 K, which is 20% higher on average than that of ITER strands. All the performances of the strands fabricated by WST meet the requirements of CRAFT project.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy and safety of second-line immunotherapy and targeted treatment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2000 to January 2023, ProQuest, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using immunotherapy or targeted therapy as second-line therapy for mid-toadvanced stages of HCC. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and adverse events (AEs) are all examples of measures of success. RESULTS: This analysis included twenty Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) from phases II and III. Collective data revealed better OS with immunotherapy (HR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.93 vs. 0.85; 95% CI: 0.78, 0.92), while the targeted therapy played a more effective role in PFS (0.67; 95% CI: 0.56, 0.81). Also, the second-line immunotherapy had a lower odds ratio of AEs of grades 3-5 than the targeted therapy did (OR = 1.75; 95% CI = 0.89, 3.46). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, it appears that targeted medication and immunotherapy as a second-line treatment strategy have generally improved substantially, as well as progression-free survival for patients with mid-to-advanced HCC. Although it is difficult to judge their efficiency, the occurrences of AEs were greater in targeted therapy compared to immunotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
