Abstract

The topological spin structures, such as skyrmions and merons, have increasingly been proposed as information carriers due to their topological characteristics and electrical maneuverability. Nevertheless, the difficulties in growing stable (especially stable under room temperature and zero magnetic fields) and large-scale topological lattices still restrict practical applications. This paper reviews the scientific efforts in facing this challenge comprehensively and simultaneously sums up the interaction between topological spin structures and current or light. The possibility of manipulating electron spin and photon chirality by the topological quasiparticles is emphatically discussed. This review paper aims to demonstrate scientific exploration for physical connotations on the interaction among topological quasiparticles and electrons and photons and to show the bridge built by researchers for the gap between scientific exploration and real-world application for topological spin structures. Abstract

An Al2O3/YAG: Ce3+ ceramic phosphor was fabricated for high-flux laser lighting using the digital lighting process (DLP)-based 3D printing method for the first time. The photocurable ceramic suspension for 3D printing was prepared by blending well-treated Al2O3/YAG: Ce3+ composite powders with photosensitive resin monomers and photo-initiators. The printing parameters, debinding and sintering processes were designed delicately to fabricated the dense sub-millimeter-sized cylinder ceramic with high dimensional accuracy. The ceramic showed excellent luminescence property under blue laser excitation with a threshold of 20.7 W/mm2, higher than that prepared via dry-pressing followed by vacuum sintering. The luminescence properties and the microstructures of both ceramics were further comparatively investigated to find the possible interpretations for improvement of laser flux for the 3D-printed ceramic. The present work indicated that the new developed 3D printing method was promising for preparing luminescent ceramics for high-flux laser lighting in a rapid, effective, low-cost and precision-controlled manner.

Abstract

The influence of the thulium ion concentration on the 1.94-μm laser performance of c-cut Tm:YAP crystal was investigated in this paper. Three crystals with 3, 4, and 5% Tm3+ (atom concentration) were examined at 18°C. Our experimental results showed that, the best power performance was obtained with the 4% Tm:YAP crystal. By using 24.8 W of incident pump power at 795 nm, a maximum of 7.5 W of output power was obtained. The slope efficiency was 48.8%, corresponding to diode-to-Tm conversion efficiency of 30.2%.

Abstract

Using by different output transmittances of 2%, 5%, and 10%, we have investigated the continuously tunable laser performance of c-cut Tm:YAP crystal. The 5-mm long c-cut crystal with 4 at.% thulium ion was used. Without a tuning element, the slope efficiency respect to the absorbed pump power reached 44.1% with transmittance of 5%, corresponding to the conversion efficiency of 35.3%. The laser operated at TEM00 mode with a beam quality factor of M2 ∼ 1.3, which was demonstrated by a 90/10 knife-edge method. A 3-mm thick birefringent plate was used as a tuning element. At transmittance of 5%, the widest tunable range of 159 nm extended from 1899 to 2058 nm. For transmittances of 2% and 10%, the tunable ranges of 150 and 68 nm were achieved, respectively.
