We present precise photometric estimates of stellar parameters, including effective temperature, metallicity, luminosity classification, distance, and stellar age, for nearly 26 million stars using the methodology developed in the first paper of this series, based on the stellar colors from the Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) DR1 and Gaia EDR3. The optimal design of stellar-parameter sensitive $uv$ filters by SAGES has enabled us to determine photometric-metallicity estimates down to $-3.5$, similar to our previous results with the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS), yielding a large sample of over five million metal-poor (MP; [Fe/H]$\le -1.0$) stars and nearly one million very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H]$\le -2.0$) stars. The typical precision is around $0.1$ dex for both dwarf and giant stars with [Fe/H]$>-1.0$, and 0.15-0.25/0.3-0.4 dex for dwarf/giant stars with [Fe/H]$<-1.0$. Using the precise parallax measurements and stellar colors from Gaia, effective temperature, luminosity classification, distance and stellar age are further derived for our sample stars. The abundance patterns of $r$-process-enhanced stars contain key information required to constrain the astrophysical site(s) of $r$-process nucleosynthesis, and to deepen our understanding of the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. In order to expand the sample of known $r$-process-enhanced stars, we have developed a method to search for candidates in the LAMOST medium-resolution ($R \sim 7500$) spectroscopic survey by matching the observed spectra to synthetic templates around the Eu II line at 6645.1 AA. We obtain a sample of 13 metal-poor ($-2.35<{\rm [Fe/H]}<-0.91$) candidates from 12,209 unique stars with 32,774 medium-resolution spectra. These candidates will be further studied by high-resolution follow-up observations in the near future. Small stellar systems like dwarf galaxies are suggested to be the main building blocks of our Galaxy by numerical simulations in Lambda CDM models. The existence of star streams like Sagittarius tidal stream indicates that dwarf galaxies play a role in the formation of the Milky Way. However, it is unclear how many and what kind of stars in our Galaxy are originated from satellite dwarf galaxies, which could be constrained by chemical abundances of metal-poor stars. Here we report on the discovery of a metal-poor star with an extreme r-process enhancement and alpha-element deficiency. In this star, the abundance ratio of the r-process element Eu with respect to Fe is more than one order of magnitude higher than the Sun and the metallicity is 1/20 of the solar one. Such kind of stars have been found in present-day dwarf galaxies, providing the clearest chemical signature of past accretion events. The long timescale of chemical evolution of the host dwarf galaxy expected from the abundance of alpha element with respect to Fe suggests that the accretion occurred in a relatively late phase compared to most of the accretions that formed the bulk of the Milky Way halo., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature Astronomy

About one percent of giants\upcite{Brown1989} are detected to have anomalously high lithium (Li) abundances in their atmospheres, conflicting directly with the prediction of the standard stellar evolution models\upcite{Iben1967}, and making the production and evolution of Li more intriguing, not only in the sense of the Big Bang nucleosynthesis\upcite{Cyburt2016,Spite1982} or the Galactic medium\upcite{Tajitsu2015}, but also the evolution of stars. Decades of efforts have been put into explaining why such outliers exist\upcite{Sackmann1999, Denissenkov2004, Charbonnel2010}, yet the origins of Li-rich giants are still being debated. Here we report the discovery of the most Li-rich giant known to date, with a super-high Li abundance of 4.51. This rare phenomenon was snapshotted together with another short-term event that the star is experiencing its luminosity bump on the red giant branch. Such high Li abundance indicates that the star might be at the very beginning of its Li-rich phase, which provides a great opportunity to investigate the origin and evolution of Li in the Galaxy. A detailed nuclear simulation is presented with up-to-date reaction rates to recreate the Li enriching process in this star. Our results provide tight constraints on both observational and theoretical points of view, suggesting that low-mass giants can produce Li inside themselves to a super high level via $^{7}$Be transportation during the red giant phase., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We report on early results from a pilot program searching for metal-poor stars with LAMOST and follow-up high-resolution observation acquired with the MIKE spectrograph attached to the Magellan~II telescope. We performed detailed abundance analysis for eight objects with iron abundances [Fe/H] < -2.0, including five extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) stars with two having [Fe/H] < -3.5. Among these objects, three are newly discovered EMP stars, one of which is confirmed for the first time with high-resolution spectral observations. Three program stars are regarded as carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, including two stars with no enhancement in their neutron-capture elements, which thus possibly belong to the class of CEMP-no stars; one of these objects also exhibits significant enhancement in nitrogen, and is thus a potential carbon and nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor star. The [X/Fe] ratios of the sample stars generally agree with those reported in the literature for other metal-poor stars in the same [Fe/H] range. We also compared the abundance patterns of individual program stars with the average abundance pattern of metal-poor stars, and find only one chemically peculiar object with abundances of at least two elements (other than C and N) showing deviations larger than 0.5dex. The distribution of [Sr/Ba] versus [Ba/H] agrees that an additional nucleosynthesis mechanism is needed aside from a single r-process. Two program stars with extremely low abundances of Sr and Ba support the prospect that both main and weak r-process may have operated during the early phase of Galactic chemical evolution. The distribution of [C/N] shows that there are two groups of carbon-normal giants with different degrees of mixing. Strongly Mg-enhanced stars with [Mg/Fe] $>$ 1.0 show peculiar abundance patterns and hence are of great interest for our understanding of stellar formation and chemical evolution of the Galaxy. A systematical search for strongly Mg-enhanced stars based on the low-resolution $(R\simeq2000)$ spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is carried out by finding the best matched synthetic spectrum to the observed one in the region of Mg I b lines around $\lambda$5170\AA$~$via a profile matching method. The advantage of our method is that fitting parameters are refined by reproducing the [Mg/Fe] ratios of 47 stars from very precise high-resolution spectroscopic (HRS) analysis by Nissen and Schuster (2010); and these parameters are crucial to the precision and validity of the derived Mg abundances. As a further check of our method, Mg abundances are estimated with our method for member stars in four Galactic globular clusters (M92, M13, M3, M71) which cover the same metallicity range as our sample, and the results are in good agreement with those of HRS analysis in the literature. The validation of our method is also proved by the agreement of [Mg/Fe] between our values and those of HRS analysis by Aoki et al.(2013). Finally, 33 candidates of strongly Mg-enhanced stars with [Mg/Fe]$>$1.0 are selected from 14850 F and G stars. Follow-up observations will be carried out on these candidates with high-resolution spectroscopy by large telescopes in the near future, so as to check our selection procedure and to perform a precise and detailed abundance analysis and to explore the origins of these stars.

We analyze the feasibility to estimate the stellar mass of galaxies by mid-infrared luminosities based on a large sample of galaxies cross-identified from $Spitzer$ SWIRE fields and SDSS spectrographic survey. We derived the formulae to calculate the stellar mass by using IRAC 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m luminosities. The mass-to-luminosity ratios of IRAC 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m luminosities are more sensitive to star formation history of galaxies than other factors, such as the intrinsic extinction, metallicity and star formation rate. To remove the affection from star formation history, we used g-r color to recalibrate the formulae and obtain a better result. It must be more careful to estimate the stellar mass of low metallicity galaxies using our formulae. Due to the emission from dust heated by hottest young stars, luminous infrared galaxies present higher IRAC 4.5 $\mu$m luminosity compared to IRAC 3.6 $\mu$m luminosity. For most of type-II AGNs, the nuclear activity can not enhance 3.6$\mu$m and 4.5$\mu$m luminosities compared with normal galaxies. e present and analyze the correlations between mid-infrared (MIR), far-infrared (FIR), total-infrared (TIR), H$\alpha$, and FUV luminosities for star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies and AGNs, based on a large sample of galaxies selected from the $Spitzer$ SWIRE fields. The MIR luminosities of star-forming galaxies are well correlated with their H$\alpha$, TIR and FUV luminosities, and we re-scaled the MIR-derived SFR formulae according to the above correlations with differences less than 15%. We confirm the recent result by calzetti et al. (2007) that the combined observed H$\alpha$ + 24$\mu$m luminosities L(H$\alpha$$_{\rm obs}$+ 24$\mu$m) possess very tight correlation with the extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ luminosities L(H$\alpha$$\_$corr) for star-forming and even for dwarf galaxies, and show that the combined L(H$\alpha$$_{\rm obs}$+ 8$\mu$m[dust]) are also tightly correlated with L(H$\alpha$$\_$corr) for the above sample galaxies. Among all the L(MIR)-L(FIR) correlations for star-forming galaxies, the L(24$\mu$m) vs. L(70$\mu$m) and L(8$\mu$m[dust]) vs. L(160$\mu$m) are the tightest and also nearly linear. The former could be related to young massive star formation, while the latter might be relevant to diffuse dust emissions heated by old stellar populations. Composite galaxies and AGNs have higher MIR-to-H$\alpha$/MIR-to-FUV luminosity ratios than star-forming galaxies, nevertheless their correlations among MIR, FIR and TIR luminosities are completely following those of star-forming galaxies., Comment: 44 pages, 14 figures; accepted publication in ApJ
